Rather than luck I'll need good memory
Worthless mnemonic exams are the ones I hate the most.
Last time they even checked the back of hands for notes
that's how mnemonic this shit is

I disagree with the concept of revising for the same reason

(normally professors encourage us to bring notes to an exam)
(it's not about memory, it's about grokking.)

What was really fun was multi-part questions in Oracle certification exams. For multi-part questions, if you go back to review the question, it clears all the answer fields and makes you answer the entire thing again.
(oh, and they're mnemonic exams, too)

had to handle that shit too

@RonanForman no server, as it turns out, since I remembered I needed to write an email

2:07 PM
although that class allowed notes so eh.

@badp Yeah, that looks like Brasero (Default Burning software)

I guess that shows how much I burn stuff when I don't play pyro.
You guys totally should bring a brasero hat to TF2.
Promotional hat for running TF2 inside Wine!
or something

@badp Like we need a repeat of the Earbuds thing.

I really don't get economies based on a decreasing amount of currency
or fixed

I've noticed that Valve hasn't been adding new hats to the game lately that can't eventually be crafted, likely due to the Max's Severed Head and Earbuds thing.

2:17 PM
besides apparently as soon as you can just you'll be able to add steam wallet funds to transactions, the value of buds and bill's and heads and whanot will crumble
as they'll become just another hat.
Can you believe some people just want to wear hats?

I don't wear my max's head on some classes, I annoyed @thomas if I recal

Okay Valve's just messing with us now.

Do I have to turn sound on to get it?
or is the thing that the head slowly turns?

yes that is the thing

@Mana NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE

2:23 PM
I keep waiting for Valve to change their mind and make old Promo items craftable.
At the time I ditched my Max's Severed Head, I didn't really care for it. Of course, they made it paintable after that point.
Also, yesterday's TF2 update added crate series 29, which has two new Strange items (and two old strange items): Razorback and Axtinguisher.
I want a Strange Axtinguisher now.
As for Strange Razorback, I imagine it's nearly as useless as Strange Chargin' Targe is.

If anything it'll look bad. Having 0 kills

@RonanForman Not all Strange items measure kills.
Unless you seriously think Strange Medi-gun does.

Strange Jarate doesn't.

Unrelated, I just saw this quote that I thought was funny.

If you get a kill with Strange Jarate though...

2:31 PM
> I never got past the "You must be at least this arrogant to enter" sign at the Apple Store entrance.
4

I think you're doing something wrong.

@Powerlord That's a point. What else can they measure.

@RonanForman Kill Assists / uebers / "sodden enemies"

But the razor back can't do any of those things.
And surely backs saved is a bad thing.

@RonanForman Strange Medi-gun measures number of Ubers and number of assists. Strange Jarate covers number of enemies hit. Strange Wrench and Strange Jag track both enemies killed by the wrench and enemies killed by the Sentry Gun.

2:32 PM
Hey @GnomeSlice!

@RonanForman It tracks "Spies Shocked".

(Speaking of which, I want a Strange Gunslinger that counts kills, 3-hit combo kills, and mini-sentry kills)

Shocking spies just means you're bad at spy checking, so it's bad to have a high number.

@GraceNote o.o Hi.

@GnomeSlice Hey buddy, how's it going?

2:35 PM
﴾͡๏̯͡๏﴿
What's with all of the attention.

stares at @GnomeSlice

I never get this kind of attention when I arrive!

It's just the fraternity of "Members who's names start with 'G' "
We should start our own exclusive group, Ronan.

Yay! I feel included!

2:37 PM
@RonanForman More like you're excluded

@RavenDreamer I can only think of two though.

@GnomeSlice Two what? I've not yet determined the criteria for membership?

@RavenDreamer Members whose names start with 'G'.

Oh, your fraternity.
It's always about you, isn't it?

G?! I thought NomeSlice started with N!

2:39 PM
@Rapida @Resorath @Robb All on the first 2 pages!

Noam Chompslice.

Should I put on a sadface because Raven is mean and is excluding me from his club?

You can be a member if you like, but you'll have to change your name.
Maybe Race Note?

15
Q: Who's that Gnome named after?

GnomeSliceSo, in a bunch of different games by Valve, there's this Garden Gnome, and he's usually associated with an achievement, involving carrying him through an area. Over the course of my internet travels, I've picked up on the fact that his name is "Gnome Chompski". What is the significance of this ...

@GraceNote Actually, my club is "People with a space in their name". So you're invited.

2:42 PM
@RavenDreamer Y U DO DIS. ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

@GnomeSlice To ensure that the "Gnomeslice Exclusion Principle" is in full effect!

@RonanForman I don't get it.

It's an arc

2:45 PM
@RonanForman A what.

Read them backwards!

@GraceNote - are you familiar with Unity?

@RavenDreamer RAPTOR SAFARI.

Which one?

2:47 PM
SUPER SPRING BREAK SPEEDBOAT HERO SD

(My next line is a joke)

@GraceNote The Game Engine?

I was going to try the Diablo 3 Beta, but my Internet connection went out

@Mana is a liar.

@RavenDreamer I'm familiar with it, then.
@GnomeSlice What this time?

2:48 PM
18 hours ago, by Mana
Hurray, beat GnomeSlice's time! Wait, that's actually not an achievement at all. That's like, barely applaudable.

> Why didn't I play longer? That's a good question. You see, the game requires an always-on Internet connection, and the servers seemed to set themselves on fire a few hours after I downloaded the beta, and this dumped me from the game.

@Powerlord The Airmech alpha is the same way.

I can't believe that Blizzard is "hotfixing" raid difficulty now.
Not as in, "This encounter was impossible, so we nerfed it"
but rather, "Okay, the bleeding edge guys have all cleared the bosses. Now we'll make it easier so the rest of you have a hope of beating it"

They've done that before (4.2 nerfed the last tier)
But that wasn't a mid-patch hotfix.
I haven't raided since classic though, so meh.

GnomeSliceGame Suggestion: Super Spring Break SpeedBoat Hero SD To be completely honest (for once!), I actually can't think of a more casual/accessible game than this for Game on! sessions. 2:52 PM
@Brant Yeah, I liked Burning Crusade the best, more than Wrath and Vanilla.

Burning Crusade raids killed my guild.

@RavenDreamer They are constantly doing this... you're just now noticing?

@Powerlord I'm just now remarking on it.
If I were still playing WoW, I'd be frustrated that Blizzard seems to think I want the fights to be less of a challenge, without giving me an option (like the WotLK cancel-able buff).
@Brant Burning Crusraids?

Some people are idiots. I have someone arguing with me that plr_hightower is bugged because mp_maxrounds 2 makes it end after two point captures. On a single stage Payload Race map.

Yeah, we never survived the transition from having a 40-man team to two 15-man teams to a 25-man team. The core players left and the rest scattered.

2:56 PM
@Powerlord People are idiots.

@Brant In Blizzard's defense, 40 people were a lot of people to manage at once. And to align schedules with.

Let me restate that, for emphasis.
People are idiots.

> If I remember correctly, there are 3 locations in plr_hightower and if you win 1st or 2nd you gain an advantage for next location and 3rd is the last one where the game should end. But for some reason it ended after 2nd location.
(he's wrong, btw)

@Powerlord Oh, I know, I'm not bitter or anything. It was a good change. Or so I assume anyway, I haven't raided since then.

Hell, just playing plr_hightower is the easiest way to disprove that.
I do find Blizzard's Cataclysm policy odd, though. Now all raids have 10 and 25 man versions, but the latter has more loot dropped?
More of the same loot as the 10 person version, that is.

2:58 PM
At least it's the same loot.
The old policy was to give the 25-man raids better loot.

Well, it makes me wonder how much more. Because if it's not three or more times the loot, why bother doing 25-man instead of 10-man?
(I don't raid at all, or even play WoW anymore)

I think it's (drops / raidsize) that is higher in 25-mans, not just drops

I disagree with the whole "heroic items are exactly the same as non-heroic items, except a different color, and with a tiny green "heroic" label on the gear itself"

@Brant Shouldn't this be ...

It's not like WoW has a shortage of items with the same name, or anything. >.<

3:06 PM
@RavenDreamer I thought they had better stats, too.

@GraceNote I'm not familiar with Javascript, but I've been tasked to do some scripting anyway. I might badger you for your expertise. Just fair warning.
@Powerlord Oh, they do. But they're basically the same item.

@MartinSojka In reference to the time_to_finish, each raid has different items.

@RavenDreamer Hey, hey, hey, you asked me about familiarity with Unity, not Javascript.

Unity does scripting with Javascript...

Poke @Powerlord if you want Javascript help.

3:07 PM
is also available for poking

@GraceNote Yeeeah, sure.

@Powerlord If economics classes thought me anything, it's that everything can be reduced to one measurement: money.

@RavenDreamer The seminar I attended did things in Python, last I checked.

@MartinSojka Well, the point being that different raids require different amounts of time.

@GraceNote Ah, well maybe you can pick which to use. This tutorial, however, uses javascript.

3:08 PM
@Powerlord That's exactly why I added that term to the formula. :)

@RavenDreamer In that case I cannot assist you and you will have to prod someone like that bespectacled lass with blue highlights in her hair.

@GraceNote I have no idea who you're referring to, but I'm guessing it's not @Mana.

I mean @TimStone, of course.

@RavenDreamer I've only glanced at Unity, but I think you can disable the GameObject's Renderer if you're only interested in hiding it from view.

Easier said than done apparently.
This collision detection is all kinds of wonky.

@Powerlord November 20th I believe

Oh, well. C'est la vie.

4:56 PM
@Brett's comment on the latest grant about upvotes and comments not making any difference does present an interesting idea for the future. What if you had to "apply" for a grant, and the people receiving it would be chosen based on votes from the community. Your "answer" could say what you plan to do with it (I plan to write a game diary for the blog, or I plan to ask at least 5 questions, etc).
This would open it up for "rising stars" that may not have a ton of reputation yet but have shown themselves to create good content in their time here.

I dunno, I don't think it's a good idea to let the community decide, it might turn ugly.

@ArdaXi Yeah, I think it would be more a popularity contest in that case
And if someone doesn't get chosen, they could take it as a real insult

Exactly.

Isn't it a popularity contest now (albeit one of longer duration)?

Not really. There are objective guidelines.

4:59 PM
Seems to me to be along the same lines as the SuperUser MVP contest

Not really. There is some popularity with regards to reputation, since popular users may be up voted just for who they are (like Jeff Atwood for example), but I would say most high-rep users have earned their rep.

@Wipqozn Bad example.

@Wipqozn So being popular means you haven't earned your rep? I agree, bad example.

@ArdaXi I disagree. Jeff Atwood may not be loved by everyone, but since he runs the site many people will up vote him just because of who he is.
@bwarner No, that's not what I mean.

@Wipqozn Fair enough, but he's not a popular user on our site.

5:00 PM
I think high reputation and popular will largely be synonymous, but where they are different I think it will generally be in a good way.

I'm saying that you will have some users who have earned there rep just due to being popular, but the vast majority of users have earned there rep, popular or otherwise.
Saying they earned there rep due to being popular is completely different then saying they are popular.

You can be high reputation from contributing a bunch of stuff a year ago and nothing since. And you can be low reputation despite awesome contributions over the last month.

@bwarner That is a good point
in that case, we should be doing it based on reputation earned in a time period

I'd rather give the grant to the person who is contributing great content now.

sob I AGREE

5:02 PM
@bwarner Can we be certain he will keep making awesome contributions a month later?
High rep is also indicative of loyalty.

@ArdaXi This.

(I mean agreeing to that is basically signing a form saying "I'm screwed for every single future grant")

Look at the election for example, not going to name any names, but certain users had a huge jump in their activity who ran, but the moment the election ended their activity dropped again.
People could easily do the same thing here.

@Wipqozn Don't accuse me like that!!!! It's not nice.

@ArdaXi Certain? No. But it seems more likely than the person who earned all their rep a long time ago.

5:03 PM
@Mana damn! He knew I was talking about him and him alone!

@Wipqozn That might be another way to do it.

@bwarner To me it seems less likely.

Do we have any good examples of high reputation users that haven't been contributing much lately?

If you don't have a lot of rep, the barrier to disappoint or not fulfil the grant might be lower.

I think one important point is to distribute the games pretty evenly among those who qualify, so that not the same people always receive the games. Still, I think some reasonable rep threshold should exist to motivate people to participate, this is part promotion and part reward for the active members.

5:05 PM
@Fabian yeah, I think the restriction that a user can only receive two games should help solve any issues.

@Fabian I think that's why Brett set it up with that new two games restriction
@Fabian Also hi!!!! :D

Didn't know about that one

@Fabian I think the idea is also that we can only select 10 people per game.
So which 10 people?

@Wipqozn Yah, I'm definitely in favor of that.

Though I wouldn't have set a strict limit of games, but just moved the priorities so that someone fulfilling the criteria who hasn't had a game yet is preferred to someone with higher rep who already received a game.

5:08 PM
I almost said "we should make it tag based" so I can get Team Fortress 3 if it's ever offered.
Assuming I'm still the top user for

@Fabian I would agree with that. There is a two-game restriction in place right now, but modifying it so receiving the first game somehow affects your rating would be a good idea.

@Wipqozn Since I'm only really interested in 1 game of the 11 on that list, I think that's a great idea!

@ArdaXi We already have examples of high-rep users that received grants and haven't asked or answered any questions about the game...

@Powerlord I'm in a similar situation. Although part of that is because the only games I would want from the grant are games which can be gifted through steam. I don't want to wait around for two weeks for a game I'm really looking forward to playing to arrive.

@bwarner And that is unfortunate, but unavoidable.

5:11 PM
Zelda is an example. I would love to get that for free, but I would rather play it the day it comes out.

@bwarner And that shoud be taken into account for future games.

Obviously we wouln't prevent it, but once it happens once you'd see a lot less people voting for them.
@Fabian Exactly, I'm just trying to come up with a way to do that.

for , I picture myself asking questions like "How quickly does my shield degrade?"

@bwarner I see no problems in the mods or some other organizers judging past performance for people who already received a game.

@bwarner I agree, but don't turn it into a popularity contest.

5:13 PM
or "how quickly do the different shields degrade" (we know they degrade because of the videos on item upgrading and durability mentioned therein)

I don't know, maybe we could at least try it once and then see how it goes.

Something like the commitment Area 51 requires would do nicely.
You only get to receive a new game once you've provided X content about the previous one, or after Y days.

@ArdaXi Heh, I've heard that a majority of "committers" don't actually meet their commitment
@ArdaXi Oh, I see

Exactly, and they can no longer commit again.

@ArdaXi There are a lot of parallels between many proposed plans for the grant and Area 51

5:14 PM
I don't think we need a vote, I see no problem with the mods/Brett deciding to take people off the list if they didn't meet the commitment. I wouldn't target a specific number of questions/answers, but decide on a case-by-case basis

Robert even made that very comparison to commitments with me back a long time ago.

When did the current convo start?

Yah, I can see that making sense.

19 mins ago, by bwarner
@Brett's comment on the latest grant about upvotes and comments not making any difference does present an interesting idea for the future. What if you had to "apply" for a grant, and the people receiving it would be chosen based on votes from the community. Your "answer" could say what you plan to do with it (I plan to write a game diary for the blog, or I plan to ask at least 5 questions, etc).

I think the previous results of a received game are probably a far better indicator of contributions for future games than rep or anything else.

5:16 PM
@Fabian I can agree with that. I trust our mods enough to make such a decision.

Yeah.

@Fabian To a degree, although sometimes it is just hard to find anything to ask (and thus there are no questions to answer either)

@Fabian That's why I said X content, and not questions/answers/rep.

If we disagreed with the decisions made we can always bring it up anyways.

I'm probably not impartial in that, as I suspect that I still hold the record for the number of questions asked for any promoted game ;-)
@bwarner That's why I don't think there should be a hard number

5:17 PM
@Fabian Fair enough

@bwarner Yeah, that can be a problem. I bought kirby mass attack, and am going to try and push a few questions onto the site, but since it's a kirby game... I don't think I'll have many questions to ask.

SRS BSNS.

This Q needs one more reopen vote.

@Brant Thanks Brant

@bwarner jeez, you never thanked me for my vote.
I think I'm going to go cry now

Rumor has it HP's board may oust HP's CEO at today's board meeting

@Powerlord Didn't they do that a few weeks ago or something?

@Wipqozn I can't see who voted, only who posted the question in chat.

@Brant Surprisingly, no.

I thought there was some company that fired its CEO recently

5:21 PM
The Witcher 2 is now in 3rd place according to views (data.stackexchange.com/gaming/s/822/game-statistics), so the first community promotion worked pretty nicely. Though still half of Minecraft and Starcraft.

I thought is was HP, but I guess not.

@bwarner suuuure, but yeah, just messing with you.

Is there a demo of Rage anywhere
I'd like to apply for this grant (finally!) but I'm kinda afraid my laptop might not beefy enough for id tech 5
If that was the case it'd be a f'cking shame

Starcraft 2 questions have been rarer and rarer of late.

5:24 PM
I don't really care about multiplayer tbh
Those titles' multiplayer tends to not count anyway (cough doom 3 multiplayer cough)

"We decided we don't want players to be able to try our game before buying it," said A. Dumass, Director of Marketing. "After all, they may find out it doesn't work on their PC."
3
(in case it wasn't incredibly obvious, that was a joke)

@Powerlord or that the game is crap

> "Besides, " continued A. Dumass, "we really cannot afford any resources to making demos as piracy continues to erode our revenues. We detected a large number of people illegally downloading the game since day 1, estimating damages for a couple bajillion dollars that will cost us three hundred thousand job positions and the country of Botswana."

Hello everyone! Active discussion I missed!
I read it all and I agree with a lot of the points; I too had the idea for people "applying" to play the games and pitching what they intend to do with it, but then also thought against it. The "popularity contest" comments are dead on, it could get awkward and messy
And I have been tracking the amount of questions being asked by grant recipients (only done it for Deus Ex and Tropico so far, waiting a few days before I do Dead Island). Those first few rounds were disrupted by us dealing with int'l Amazons and faulty Steam, so I don't know how accurate the stats are. As in, some people got the games weeks earlier than others

Well, my proposal would be that I play the game, ask questions and answer them, I don't know what more there would be to write.

5:33 PM
I'll ask questions, answer them, and lower taxes.

@Fabian Exactly. Yeah. Although you could pitch that you would ask at least 3 or so questions. I find it weird to require a number of questions, but maybe in the replies users make their own promise of what they think they can ask and answer. I don't know if that would affect the actual selection process, but I'd feel better about people not meeting a req they set instead of one I set

(void **) <-- I always love casts like these. They definitely don't confuse the heck out of me.

As in, I feel weird about telling people they can't get games because they didn't ask enough questions. Because I feel bad about being the bad guy!!

@BrettWhiteΨ I think the distribution of the games is a critical factor, to be really effective we need the game in the hands of the users the day it is released. The number of people searching declines pretty rapidly after the game is released.

5:36 PM
As I recall, with Amazon, if you pre-order early enough, they offer launch day delivery for some games.

@Fabian That is 100% true. Having it delivered thru internet services has been faulty (although the recent Star Wars grant in the Sci-Fi site, all of them got their blu-rays on the day or day after it was released)

@Powerlord Obviously that doesn't help when the launch day isn't the same

@Fabian So maybe Steam is the best option, or should be the default, as that can be done immediately

@badp How'd your exam go?!

@BrettWhiteΨ Okay, I could say for the last game I asked 29 questions and answered 34, but I can't really predict how much there is for the next game.

5:36 PM
@Mana Who knows!

I think digital distribution is the way to go, if the problems with gifting multiple games are solved.

Hurray, TF2 time.

For me Amazon worked fine, but that seems to vary a lot

@Mana =[
I was gonna get you to race my latest SSBSHSD Track.

I got the game the day it was released, which was very helpful in getting the early questions out.

I have 2xGTX570. :D

See how you guys do against a Shark Attack!

user30
no.

@Fabian Yeah exactly. I think it's problematic to require users to ask X number of questions. It is entirely possible that they will only have 2 questions about a game; I don't like them forcing questions that aren't genuine

5:41 PM
@ThomasMcDonald ಥ_ಥ

Perhaps I'll be able to sign up for a grant for, um, WordHunt 2012 Elite.

I think you can only judge it afterwards, usually multiple people receive the game and you can judge somewhat how much there is to ask about it. I only would exclude people from further games if the number of Q&As is far outside the expectations.

Or Minesweeper Evolution HD, if I turn my graphics settings a bit down.

@badp +1 my brother.
