@RonanForman ok, I give up, it is pointless to have this debate with people who lack a fundamental understanding of economics. It just isn't going to go anywhere
the person wouldn't be a thief (if the bread was taken on the way to being thrown out), but money would be lost, because the physical goods are being thrown out
Unless you're willing to use a digital good parallel, I don't think this is worth continuing.
I think something just needed to be starred.
user15026
@Wipqozn We should share one! :P
They're too different to compare in any sense.
16:00
@Frank I have never heard a good digital parallel
@Chippies But it's being thrown out anyway, the 'thief' didn't have any part in that.
@AJHenderson I understand economics just fine. Just because I don't agree with your interpretation doesn't mean I don't understand it.
@Chippies Yeah, neither have I.
@MBraedley Yeah, my mental picture of NS totally did not include lakes. And I've been there.
@RonanForman on an individual scale, the 'thief' is not costing anyone money, but it is lost money, due to the goods being lost
@Frank the entire point is to demonstrate the lack of understanding of the value that goes in to making a digital good available
any parallel with a digital good is going to have the same issue
16:01
but it's not the thief's fault that the money is lost :P
2
but I agree it isn't going to go anywhere
I really hate it when people with gold badges close a question as a duplicate without stopping to think about it. In this case it was a duplicate, but not to the question the other person who voted to close indicated and didn't actually answer the question the person asked... who then deleted the question.
@Chippies unless they could have paid for the service
@Chippies So you'd be fine with taking a loaf of bread that would be thrown out anyway?
that's the distinction
16:02
@RonanForman I would much rather take the loaf of bread than have it thrown out

Q: Artificial Biomes

MoniqueSo I'm building my artificial biomes so I can farm certain things and have enemies spawn. The question is how big do the biomes need to be? So far I've built a crimson, underground jungle, surface jungle and a desert but none of them are spawning monsters. I've read the Guide on Artificial biomes...

@AJHenderson I understand the value just fine.
if someone needs the bread and couldn't pay, then it isn't greedy because they couldn't help, but if they are allowing someone else to take a loss (or less profit) because they don't feel like paying for the service
that's greed
But the part I disagree with is that people are not automatically entitled to compensation from their work.
@JasonBerkan Do you consider Bras D'Or (in Cape Breton) to be a large lake (relatively) or a very small sea, since it is salt water?
16:03
personally, I don't think the bread parallel is very good anyway
another thing with piracy is that it's free advertising
@Chippies if your intent in pirating is to see if you like it before you buy it, I don't think it is bad
so yeah, I buy the free advertising argument
1
Airsoft

Proposed Q&A site for airsoft Enthusiasts

Currently in definition.

@MBraedley I'd probably call it a lake. We have a few salt / mineral water lakes out here.
@AJHenderson or I could use something for free and then tell all my friends about this thing they would never hear about otherwise and they might buy it
just so long as you follow through and actually do buy it if you do like it
16:05
Okay, so they make 100 loaves, only 95 get sold, so next time they only make 95, now there is no waste. Done.
With the example of a movie, they spend $1m on making a movie, expecting $1.2m back, they only make $.6m so next time they only spend $.5m to expect $.6m back. Because of loads of people not paying, you end up with a worse movie.
Well a worse movie next time.
@RonanForman See, this is economics in a nutshell.
@Frank I know.
But it doesn't matter whether it's digital or not.
@RonanForman It really does.
The cost to produce the item is X.
The cost to distribute, for digital goods, is something like 1% or less of that cost.
and note that I don't think either Ronan or I is saying it is theft, it isn't since there isn't additional loss, but it is greedy to take something that required effort that they should have gotten compensation for if you are using the result of their effort
Digital goods are front-loaded.
16:07
@AJHenderson I agree on the greed part
because you are effectively telling them and everyone else that contributed to the cost that you shouldn't have to also share a portion of the effort involved in the service
@AJHenderson I'm not saying it's ideal. It's not.
But I disagree completely with the point of piracy being a problem.
@AJHenderson No, no, and no some more.
@Frank would you agree that not consuming is a better option?
@AJHenderson Better option for who?
I read a decent article on the costs of piracy.
@Frank It is a problem, but it shouldn't be solved by making it harder to pirate, it should be solved by making it easier/more convenient to pay for it.
user15026
16:09
Guys, can we like...not make this into a "your morals suck" style argument?
It's not just a cost in dollars and cents; there's a cost in convenience, and integrity as well.
@Frank not sure I follow what you mean, though it does intrigue me
For some people, pirating has a zero integrity cost. I am one of those.
@AJHenderson I think pirating is a better option than not consuming for EVERYONE
by pirating something, I can either tell others about it or possibly even consider buying the goods at a later time
16:11
by not consuming, I don't learn anything about the goods, I don't spread the word
@Chippies why would you want to tell others about it if it isn't worth paying for though?
It doesn't make any difference to the producer whether you pirate it or just don't watch it.
if it wasn't a valuable experience to you, then I wouldn't want to tell anyone anything other than stay away from it
@AJHenderson because people have different values
now, that said, it may not be worth what they are asking for it
16:12
what I might think is not worth paying the full price for, someone else might find totally acceptable
I would love to see a movie version of Humble Bundle personally
if the goods are under 5$, I won't pirate it
But that doesn't mean that pirating things isn't bad for the producer, it's still a lost sale.
if it's 10$ or above, I might, depending on what the goods are
and if I think it's worth the costs
user15026
I think a lot of this is a personal valuation judgment of the cost/value of a particular good or service, and I don't think anyone is going to really change anyone's mind.
user15026
16:13
If you don't wanna do the thing, great, but other people will, because they have a differing valuation of the item.
@RonanForman pirating might be less lost sales than not consuming at all
consuming generates buzz about the product
buzz = sales
pirating is worse than buying, for the producer
but not consuming at all is worse than pirating
@Chippies Still lost sales, which is why people saying piracy isn't a problem are annoying, piracy is a problem, but making it hard to pirate things isn't the solution.
Making it easier to pay is.
@RonanForman like @Frank said, piracy is a symptom
@Chippies Sort of.
But yeah.
Doesn't mean it's not bad though.
user15026
@RonanForman Exactly. It comes down to figuring out WHY people pirate (I mean there will always be people who pirate because they can, nature of the beast), instead of making it harder and thus driving more people to want to spend less on your media because you are blocking their access to it.
16:17
@Chippies yeah, and I think that goes towards the whole idea of try before you buy. It is kind of backwards that you can't return a movie if you find it really wasn't worth the cost
that I don't like
because there is no consumed cost, so if you watch the movie and go, that really wasn't worth $20, you should be able to get at least a partial refund I think.
as for the movies, I can easily not consume and not care
I am very impartial about movies
I usually enjoy watching them at home, but it's such a limited experience that I wouldn't pay for it
that being said - I watch maybe one movie every 6 months
Ooooooohhhh, a game refund thing, you buy it, and then you can get like 70% refund that day, 60% the next etc.
@RonanForman if it's digital, a lot of people won't even be able to download the game on the same day
@Chippies Well then time from the day of first play, which would be easy with something like steam.
@RonanForman offline mode takes care of that
16:21
@Chippies Well fuck.
indeed :P
@Chippies could start the timer from the first launch
in that case
@AshleyNunn Well that's just boring. Your morals of trying to get along suck! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! BLOODSHED IS THE ONLY MORAL
@AJHenderson again, offline mode takes care of that
though I'm not a big fan of that setup either, if it was really crappy, I don't think you should have to pay anything
16:22
Make it so it has to be played online first? But the you're making it harder to play legally, which makes the problem harder.
unless it's an always-online game, which is always bad
@Chippies well, unless it is an inherent part of the game
it's ok for WoW to be always online
@AJHenderson You could up the starting refund to like 95% or even 100%, but then you could finish the game in 1 day and return.
user15026
@Wipqozn Shut up turtle.
Also I have no idea whats going on, but I'll assume @KevinvanderVelden is to blame.
16:23
@AJHenderson which is why more and more AAA games are integrating always-online features
@AshleyNunn whoa man. Whoa.
or just bring back demos
I mean, where did they go
@AJHenderson to piratebay :P
user15026
@Wipqozn I saw a girl yesterday with a backpack that looks like a giant turtle shell. It amused me
16:23
@Chippies Not always online, just one time online, which is only slightly better.
well, as previously mentioned, I have no issue at all with pirating to try and then discarding if it isn't worth the value asked
@AshleyNunn Did you get her number? Pretty sure her and I are soul mates.
I wouldn't even argue that you owe them partial value since they are asking too much. Would be nice if there was a good way to give them partial value, but you can't really evaluate the value until you try it
@AJHenderson I think PAR had a story showing that demos reduced sales, as all the people that are unsure about the game play the demo and then decide not to purchase.
@AJHenderson totally off-topic, but my wife just saw your name and asked if you're from Ontario
16:24
@JasonBerkan oh, I'm sure, but that isn't a bad thing in terms of fairness
@Chippies nope, Albany, NY area
My basic take is that, very often, the pirated product offers better service than the legitimate one. That means I spend less of my time and convenience, which is more important to me than my integrity, as I've tried the legal route and found it lacking.
@AJHenderson okay, nevermind then :P
@JasonBerkan consumers aren't the only ones who can engage in practices that aren't fair to the other party
it does go both ways
@Frank Yes, but that isn't to say that piracy is fine, just that the solution isn't restrictive DRM.
@RonanForman Piracy isn't fine. But it's a rather good symptom of the problem.
16:27
@RonanForman piracy is a temporary solution to restrictive DRM
The MPAA has indoctrinated people into thinking that consumption requires payment, and that downloading a movie is bad.
Because seriously, anyone who thinks that they can make DRM that will stop pirates is sadly mistaken.
Is it illegal? Yes. Is it actually wrong? I sincerely doubt that.
user15026
@Frank See, you can't really make that judgement for anyone but yourself because then it is a personal ethics thing
@AshleyNunn Indeed. And others can do as they like, and I will argue to the death my right to do the same. :P
user15026
16:28
And telling people their personal ethics are wrong is not really a thing we should be opening up to in here.
@AshleyNunn I think this whole thing started with @Frank defending his position, rather than pushing his ethics on someone else
I think we should all keep in mind that any drama which takes place in this room provides both @Sterno and I with amusement.
Do you really want @Sterno and I to be happy?
@RonanForman especially any DRM that doesn't also severely impede the rights of legitimate consumers
@Wipqozn I argue with @Sterno about more or less everything.
If he's happy, I can't be.
@AJHenderson All DRM impedes legitimate customers, even if it's only an extra second of validation time.
16:30
So, no, I don't want you guys to be happy.
2
@RonanForman yes, but it doesn't have to be severely
@Frank What do you mean by 'good symptom'?
that said, I still prefer DRM free world
user15026
@Chippies Aye, I get where it started, I am just saying that as people run out of arguments it is hitting some "your ethics suck" type stuff so I kinda want to make sure that doesn't spread any farther.
@RonanForman It's a pretty easy thing to point to. Not as a problem, but as a symptom of the problem.
Not good as in, "This is a good thing"
16:33
@Frank Right.
@Frank so, to see if I understand correctly, basically you wish piracy wasn't neccessary, but you feel that because of the harm of the other issues, it does more good than harm, even if in an ideal world, it would do more harm than good?
is that an approximate understanding of what you are trying to say
8 mins ago, by Frank
My basic take is that, very often, the pirated product offers better service than the legitimate one. That means I spend less of my time and convenience, which is more important to me than my integrity, as I've tried the legal route and found it lacking.
In general, the pirated product is superior to the legitimate one.
3
Not even including actual pricing.
Give me a legit product that offers the same in convenience and time, at a fair price point, and I'll buy it.
Because I buy a ton of stuff. I have no problems with doing so.
@Frank I think things like spotify and netflix are starting to fix this, because you are guaranteed a good quality movie/track.
@Frank this I can agree with, which is a big part of why I don't have a problem with using the pirated copy of anything I have legit if the need arose. I don't think a service provider should have the right to restrict my ability to consume content I bought a copy of
Or at least should be.
16:35
@RonanForman And they have actually lowered piracy dramatically, I believe.
Because they offer a legitimate service, with convenience that consumers want, at a price point they are happy with.
THAT is good service.
@Frank I wouldn't know, their library is too incomplete (at least in the UK) for me to consider it.
@RonanForman And that's actually one of the main issues with the MPAA and RIAA.
They're trying to kill this innovation, rather than embrace it.
@RonanForman Netflix doesn't stop you from pretending you are in the US.
@RonanForman It doesn't have a lot of good movies, but at least in America it has a huge selection of good TV shows
@JasonBerkan But it's harder, so it's now easier for me to stream elsewhere less than legally.
16:37
the funny part about this whole discussion is I think we largely agree on probably around 90% of it
(which btw, I've been thoroughly enjoying the discussion, I hope you guys have been too)
@JasonBerkan I know you can do it, but I've never looked into how. Is there an easy way of pretending I'm in the US?
@AJHenderson I always enjoy a good intelligent discussion :P
@AJHenderson I love to argue things. It's one of the best things to do over beer and wings.
user15026
@Chippies You can use various VPN/proxy things - I pay for unblock-us ($5 a month)
@Chippies (and @RonanForman) - Hola! - Chrome extension that gives you access to Netflix, Hulu, et al. as an American. Or a Canadian. Or an Austrian.
@AshleyNunn do you need to pay with a US based credit card/paypal though?
user15026
16:39
@JasonBerkan This is also good!
user15026
@Chippies nope. I just pay with my Canadian credit card
@JasonBerkan I already use that for Hulu, but I thought it depended on the account rather than the streamer's "location".
@AshleyNunn though again, that's less convenient in a lot of ways
user15026
I found with Hola! it went down on me a few times/slowed down etc
@AshleyNunn so, if I have Canadian netflix, the moment I switch to a US based VPN/Proxy, I'd be getting US shows on it?
16:40
there really shouldn't be barriers to try and prevent someone from legitimately accessing content
user15026
@AJHenderson I dunno, it works spiffy for me
that's just stupid
user15026
@Chippies Pretty much yeah
FAE
FAE
@RonanForman My main issue with services like Spotify is they give the artists a crap cut.
@AshleyNunn yeah, it's still hoop jumping though
16:40
@AshleyNunn cool, I'll have to try that
@Chippies No. Netflix does absolutely no account checking. Everything is run through the IP address that is accessing the account. When I was in Hawaii, I automatically got American Netflix. Had to use Hola! for Canadian Netflix. :P
user15026
@Chippies It is very easy to set up.
@JasonBerkan thanks, I'll try that :)
@FAE I don't use it for that reason, also I'm far to hipster for my stuff to be on there.
user15026
@AJHenderson True, but it is a small hoop and an easy one
user15026
16:41
I mean now I am paying what, $15 a month for 90% of the media I consume?

Q: What does Snowballing mean?

WoopZerzI heard Snowballing in a lot of league of legends gameplay videos and I don't know what it means. For example I hear Renekton can snowball really hard.

Q: What game is this?

Kevin Google reverse image search times out. I found the image in this article and my friend recognized it. We can't figure out what the name of the game is or what it was about. My friend says you could pick up a few items in this room (the game started here). You could also go downstairs and talk t...

I don't really feel like paying for a VPN right now, so I'll have to do with the Hola!
@AshleyNunn fair enough, and I suppose pirating requires hoop jumping too
@AJHenderson Technically it's not legitimate because it's covered by export laws
Not that I think it shouldn't be
@murgatroid99 there shouldn't be "export" laws on the internet
user15026
16:42
@AJHenderson I'd say more so because there are more ways for that to go horribly wrong (she says, remembering the time she spent two hours fixing her sister's computer and editing the registry and stuff to clean it from the crap she had gotten from torrents)
@murgatroid99 it is by licensing, not export laws
@murgatroid99 It's the same reason our TV channels get shows 6-12 months later.
FAE
FAE
The Usenet service we use just gave us free VPN access per month, which is pretty awesome.
the content producers said, you can play it for this group, but not this group
user15026
I hate that licensing laws apply to the internet
16:42
that's not a limitation that I think they should really be able to make in a globalized economy
user15026
Like the fact that a lot of American stuff is locked to me because of the border just makes me mad, no matter how funny the Daily Show/ Colbert Report "haha nope sorry Canada" messages are
@Chippies Right, I meant more generally rules related to stuff moving between countries
@AshleyNunn Ugh, we might end up started on region locking too.
@AshleyNunn any tech-savvy person can jump through the pirating hoops with minimal/no effort, the problem is when computer illiterates do it
either they are willing to sell at a given price or they aren't
user15026
16:43
@Chippies Like my sister :P
are we still talking about this?
user15026
I banned her from downloading. If she wants things, I get them for her.
@Rapitor yes, but it's actually progressed a lot since the start
user15026
@Rapitor Yeeeeep.
@AshleyNunn or my sister :P or most people siblings, lol
user15026
16:44
@Chippies Haha yep.
This isn't the Bridge I know... we could barely hold a topic for 5 minutes let alone an hour
@Rapitor It's always depended on the topic
user15026
I think, though, at this point we have mostly exhausted the arguments. I think.
I think we're just having a friendly aftermath conversation now
@Rapitor holding a topic is fine, just as long as it isn't the ACTUAL topic
we almost started talking about games, but then we moved back to movies to be safe
16:46
@Rapitor Depends on how hard people are arguing, I think.
@JasonBerkan it can't seem to do HD with the proxy :(
oh nevermind, it managed to catch up after a while
@Chippies You are "stealing" someone else's Internet connection.
@JasonBerkan "stealing"? Does this use p2p or something? :P
but yeah, my ideal world is where people pay what services are worth to them in excess of the actual cost of providing the service to them and people are allowed to use the content liberally (any device, any format, with any group of friends as long as it isn't mass public viewing) while considering the allowed uses in the valuation of what the service is worth and actually paying fair value for it. That includes having the option to pay nothing (and give back the asset) if it isn't worth it
@Chippies nah, really big wifi antennas and hacked passwords, otherwise it'd just be sharing
@Chippies Hola! bounces your request through an American Hola! user's Internet. And, when you have it on, Canadian requests are being sent through your Internet.
Some people have security issues with that. Other people just like watching Scrubs.
16:54
@JasonBerkan does it use the Tor network that I've heard so much about?
@Chippies I'd hope not
the latency would be BAD
@Chippies No. It's all controlled by whatever company owns Hola!.

Q: What exactly happens if I choose to erase a game's progress?

ToomaiIn Settings > Other, I have the option to "Delete [Subgame] Progress" for each subgame. I am considering doing this for Warrior's Way because I've hit max numbers and have all the hat tickets for having said high numbers. I'd like to know exactly what "progress" means before going through with it...

@JasonBerkan okay then
TOR is good for anonymity but not so good for streaming
unless they've made some major advances
16:55
@AJHenderson not ideal for anonymity either, because it's so popular and it's being spied on because of that
@Chippies popularity is what makes it secure
plenty of people have got in trouble by using Tor
if it wasn't popular, then it wouldn't provide any benefit
@AJHenderson yes and no, it's popular, but not popular enough to create high signal/noise ratio
the bigger issue is that it can still be seen that you use tor
just not what you do with it
if everyone used tor, it would be safe, but right now it's not popular enough
@Chippies if you were the only user on tor, there would be no annonymity
@AJHenderson yes, I know that
TOR works by disguising which packets belong to which users and playing a shell game
but it is weak to too many nodes being controlled by a colluding party
I guess it's safe for the people that don't opt to act as outgoing nodes
16:57
it really should have included random delays in packet transmission
to prevent timing attacks
I know it didn't have that feature when I was in college back in 2005 and taking my Computer Systems class, but I don't know how it has changed since then particularly well
then there is also the problem of people who misues it and identify themselves by their outgoing node
such as signing in to services
or having cookies allowed
having an annonymous IP makes no difference if you scream your name from that IP at the top of your lungs
Sec.SE actually has a lot of great TOR resources
One more week until the SAO game!
Yay!
user15026
Man, I go camping sooooon. It's going to be awesome to get to relax, but I dunno, leaving y'all for a week....
@AshleyNunn Probably a good thing.
It's like herding a bag of cats.
user15026
@Frank This is true. :)
user15026
I am excited to relax and swim every day and read books and roast marshmallows
17:03
@Frank no, cats atleast follow a laser pointer
user15026
Oh, and the part where I don't work for an ENTIRE WEEK including on my birthday is SO appealing
@AJHenderson Yes. And when multiple cats follow it, they tumble all over each other and make a mess.
@Frank one man's mess is another man's hilarity

Q: Method to learn all heroes in Dota 2?

RaikanI am searching for a method to learn all heroes in Dota 2. Stack Exchange is about questions with objective, factual answers. We’ve been crystal clear about this for as long as I can remember, even back to the earliest, pre-beta days of Stack Overflow. It’s right there in the standard Stack Exchange FAQ:

What kind of questions should I not ask here?

Avoid asking questions that are subjective, argumentative, or require extended discussion. This is not a discussion board, this is a place for questions that can be answered!

Thus, questions that are not answerable — discussions, debates, opinions — should be closed as subjective. It seems simple enough: Fact good; opinion and discussion bad. But why? …

PlayStation TV launches in North America on October 14th http://bit.ly/1nMdxnp
I don't see anyone talking about a time limit on twitter

Imternetlessness is the worst
I just had to pay €1 for the privilege to watch some YouTube videos!!
since you have to use PS+ to use shareplay I doubt there's a limit, trhe far cry thing is something different
