According to Google your suggest route is only 1 minute longer than the highway thouhg, given ideal traffic.

Well I'll try a few differnet routes and see what I like best. In any case it' a good idea to have a few routes home and to work anyways.

So for making a furnace one of the first things to do is go through the inventory and add the property smelts_to:X for smeltable things

Then all the furnace/villager need do is check if something has smelts_to set, and can perform the necessary action with no individual checking at that point
