@spugsley Creeper.
@FEichinger Awww you do care :3
18:03
@spugsley cough cough
well, I'm switching to the mutsu set for all my LBG needs I think.
That bonus shot is so useful. I just tried it with status shots, and it makes status attack +2 really handy. I can paralyze a rathian with less shots, as well as para it 3 times instead of 2 with a 12 para s
:DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
@Wipqozn I was about to say "I thought Bonus Shot didn't do anything for..." and then I remember they're not called Large Bowguns...
I'm confusing LBG with LMG. Ahhhhh!!!!
@Yuki LMG doesn't even stand for "large machine gun"...
18:10
@Unionhawk This is true.
Also, there is nothing light about an LMG. It's light-er than a regular machine gun, maybe. But it's still not light.
@Unionhawk I know. Someone told me it did when I first started playing shooters and I can't get it out of my head.
PENGUINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
@Yuki Yeah, I kind of did too. Because LMGs are really heavy... >_>

Q: How do I let other people into my world in the newest version of Minecraft PE?

AnnaI want to let my brother into my world, but it's not working. We even changed the settings on both devices. I am using a kindle fire, he's using an iPad. How can we play with each other?

I do not clear stars. That would be madness.
18:15
You just comment about how dumb our stars are.
Exactly
If I cleared stars, I wouldn't be able to complain.
Exactly!
You know, reading through EOR's privacy policy for Loadout makes me want to play the game less and less.
They basically say they use web beacons to collect information on your browser history and that agreeing with this privacy policy agrees to let them do it.
@Yuki Oh gods... o_o That looked painful.
18:17
and collate it with the other information they have on you.
@Fluttershy Yeah, the Reddit thread seems to hint that was an instant knockout.
In other words. they want to be just like Facebook
hmmm
I got pundit and I have no idea for which comments
sigh I'm a little sad to see all those stars evaporate.
I held the stars list with and iron "Oh My" for some time.

Beer.SE has 100% of their questions answered. That can't be a good sign.
cc @spugsley @AshleyNunn
@Yuki KITTTTTTTYYYYY ATTACKKKKKKKKKKKKK
user15026
@Yuki Kitties! :D Best reward for finishing this stupid assignment.
user15026
@JeffreyLin Why not?
user43095
18:23
@AshleyNunn because there's no new answers, no flow of rep from powerful to newbs, and I don't know I just think it's bad
@Yuki If I was this teacher I'd be like, "Yup, this kid understands how the world works. I can't teach him anything."
user15026
@JeffreyLin Considering we want to build a repository of useful info on the internet, which is the real goal here....having answered questions is good.
user15026
@spugsley Yeah, that would be my reaction too :P
@Yuki Technically correct is the best kind of correct.
user43095
But it means that there are no new questions being asked
18:25
</kalina>
@Unionhawk it may have only been improved if the next question had the answer "Every new year is significant"
user15026
@JeffreyLin Not necessarily.
Baby musk ox.
@JeffreyLin That's not true, the current rate is 14/day.
user15026
18:27
It doesn't imply any sort of stasis, it just means that at the moment the stats were collected, everything was answered. There might have been some rounding in there as well. Besides, the site is super new, so staring at those stats is likely going to make you crazy rather than actually reveal anything all that useful right now.
That said, Beer.SE is currently trying to figure out what it is, so... yeah, I dunno how long it will last. The existence of homebrew.se really throws a wrench in things. There should've been one site with a very large homebrew tag from day one.
Also, I am still baffled as to why @JeffreyLin of all people is particularly concerned or interested in beer.se. :P
5
user43095
Also, according to Relationships and Dating meta, they're closing tomorrow.
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Yeah, they likely should have been combined somehow, but then again, I can see people going "oh but what if I make my own wine" or something
user43095
@LessPop_MoreFizz Because beer.
user15026
@JeffreyLin Yep. It didn't work out, for a variety of reasons.
18:28
@AshleyNunn Yeah, exactly that is going on right now.
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Oh dear.
@JeffreyLin Which you cannot legally purchase or consume for another... what is it, 8 years?
Obviously the solution is wine.se!
which doesn't exist at the moment!
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Eh, having a healthy interest and curiosity didn't ever hurt anyone. Now when he can drink, he is going to be so prepared ;)
18:30
@AshleyNunn What's the issue with combining Beer.SE, Homebrew.SE, and adding wine as an accepted topic?
@AshleyNunn IMO, the solution is throw out the winemakers and distillers, they have far less overlap with home beer brewers than beer drinkers do.
user15026
@Yuki Dunno, I am not really active in any of that, I am just throwing out ideas.
user15026
I drink a lot of beer, but I don't know a lot about the intricacies, and I am sorta happy that way. If it tastes good, I drink it, and that's all I think aobut.
user43095
Oh balls it's eight
3
@AshleyNunn Shoot, meant to reply to @LessPop_MoreFizz.
18:30
@Yuki Culturally, wine and liquor are fairly distinct from beer; both in terms of production and the standards of judgment at play and all sorts of other things.
@LessPop_MoreFizz But why can't we combine wine, beer, spirits, and the brewing thereof into some big Alcohol.SE?
@Yuki Not really, IMO.
Booze.se
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Why not?
user15026
It makes sense to me.
18:31
There's just not as much overlap as teetotalers often think there is when it comes to the enthusiast markets.
user43095
@Yuki Speaking of, I'm also baffled as to why Bitcoin.SE isn't Cryptocurrencies.SE
Why can't we just combine physics.se and chemistry.se and biology.se into one big science.se
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Even so, don't we risk too narrow of a scope?
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Those are much bigger disciplines than beer vs wine.
user43095
Trippy!.SE
18:32
@AshleyNunn It's possible, but I think the bigger issue is one of a subject matter that isn't really suited to the format. inflating the subject matter so that it's big enough to cover that up feels disingenuous and counterproductive.
I mean, if we're going to split scopes on those lines, we might as well get MinecraftCrashed.SE.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Then why don't we split Gaming.SE into Real-time Strategy.SE, FPS.SE, and a whole host of others?
user15026
@Unionhawk Precisely.
I mean, there's not much overlap between RTS's and FPS's...
Since those questions are the furthest removed from anything related to playing the game.
user15026
18:33
@LessPop_MoreFizz I don't see how it is inflating, nor how it isn't suited to the format. Sure, you might get some stuff that is personal taste related, but there is like....also a lot of science and junk that could be asked about.
There are people with degrees in wine and whatnot, I think it could potentially work.
user15026
I think so as well. I think it would be better than splitting all of those up.
@AshleyNunn So, lets look at the homebrewing/winemaking example: the only thing the two processes have in common is literally the fact that the end product is a beverage that impedes your judgment.
This is where tags come in though, no?
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz The only thing gaming has in common is that it is a series of 1's and 0's that are interactive and entertaining.
18:36
@Unionhawk When your website consists of basically 3 communities that have minimal overlap between them, that's not how tags ought to be used.
are most homebrewers also winemakers?
@LessPop_MoreFizz Right yeah I was now thinking this
Not usually, I don't think
@RedRiderX (db reset) You can now complete the splat-the-rat quest!
Omigosh
on it now!
I've never heard of people who make their own wine until just now.
18:36
@LessPop_MoreFizz MinecraftCrashes.SE, BestLeagueChampion.SE, and HOWEVERYTHINGOUT.SE don't have a lot of overlap either.
user15026
@RedRiderX not necessarily, I know some that just do wine, some that just do beer, etc
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Dude, when it comes to gaming, there is minimal overlap all over the place.
user15026
I dont touch Minecraft, or LoL, or WoW, but there is other stuff I can do.

JustinI'd like to create a secondary set of armor to use while soloing that improves my DPS without requiring me to switch specs. 18:38
Why just alcohol.se? Why not drugs.se and make marijuana on topic too? you can inflate the scope of any site pretty much infinitely is my point. The idea, as I understood it from day one was that you ideally want the smallest possible subset that's sustainable.
There's a tension there in figuring out what that is.
and sometimes, SE sites have erred on the side of too big a tent and had issues like the programmers.se scope wars nonsense.
others erred on the side of too small and fallen apart from disuse as beer.se is rapidly barreling towards.
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Yeah, so we could techincally have EVERYTHING.SE and be done with it, so what? I get that you want to make separate sites, obviously, but there is also a time to say "this thing is too narrow to work"
@AshleyNunn Yes. And what I'm saying is that the thought that 'alcohol.se is so obviously the right scope' is just as much of a judgement call as me saying that 'hay, if we took the beer consumption questions that beer.se has and combined them with the homebrews stuff, I think that might feel like the right sized scope.'
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz There are definitely scope issues from every end, sure, but that is not to say that we just have to disregard things out of hand because they might one day be a problem, either. Making problems appear because OMG THEY MIGHT SOMEDAY doesn't help.
@fredley Hey it works!
that's great
user15026
18:41
@LessPop_MoreFizz I am well aware of that. Thank you.
@RedRiderX Cool!
user15026
@Yuki snorts
@RedRiderX I think I may have to rejig it
@Yuki literal facedesk
Experts are by definition at least somewhat narrowly focused in their expertise. Look at how experts define themselves, and derive scope from that.
18:41
@fredley How?
@AshleyNunn From the Reddit thread: She's looking for love in the Alderaan places.
@RedRiderX Currently the way quests and mob-kills are linked is not great
ah okay
Thinking about extensability
There is no class of people out there defining themselves as 'alcoholic beverage experts'. There are cicerrones. Mixologists. Somelliers. Brewers. vintners.
user15026
18:42
@LessPop_MoreFizz But who gets to decide expertise?
@LessPop_MoreFizz Prosumers
3
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz So then only those people should be touching the site? Then it will die like whoa.
user15026
@Yuki <3 it
@Yuki or maybe the best time
18:43
@AshleyNunn No, of course not. But attracting those people to the site is what makes it worth using for everybody else.
That's the whole foundation of StackExchange.
user15026
@Yuki "And that is the last picture we have of him...." sniffle
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz I am well aware of that. In that sense, you are well and truly preaching to the choir.
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Yes, but if the site dies before it can get to that point, because it is too narrow, then what?
@LessPop_MoreFizz Similar to their being no Science experts, but their are physicists, chemists, et cetera.
18:44
I'm not sure if the scope of each of those things is wide enough to support it's own site though, but I can understand why you'd want to split them up.
Goddamn Aussies.
user15026
I think that beer.SE is too narrow. I am not sure how to incorporate anything else that won't piss anyone else off (because OPINIONS! EVERYWHERE!)
@RedRiderX The problem is that mob fights can span several messages
user15026
I mean I see that there is overlap, but perhaps that is just my uneducated hick self talking.
So keeping track of the context is non-trivial
18:45
Ah okay
user15026
Because I am far from being an expert in any of that stuff.
making sure that it stays around
The progress on the quest that is
@AshleyNunn Right. I agree with that first sentence. I think that (given the fact that homebrew.se really is pretty okay right now, but maybe needs a bit of a shot in the arm, and given that homebrew.se doesn't really have much winemaking or distilling content anyway), combining beer.se with homebrew.se makes a lot of sense and results in an appropriately scoped site.
@RedRiderX Yeah, I think I can do it though
Given that once you're in combat mode you can't move around
Could you not just have some progress ticker variable for each individual quest?
Or would that become unwieldy?
user15026
18:47
@LessPop_MoreFizz Yes, but then what if the wine people come in and go I WANNA ASK ABOUT MY WINE
So I'm not sure why there is such an eagerness on some fronts (generally from people who would very actively not really describe themselves as experts on the subject, and I don't mean that as an insult in any way) to try to inflate the scope even further.
user15026
are you going to say "yes please come in" or go "WRONG ALCOHOL GET OUT"
@AshleyNunn I think a wine.se with a similarly broad production/consumption scope could work just fine.
@Lazers Close, but no cigar.
18:47
@LessPop_MoreFizz I don't think mixing production and consumption is a good idea.
I also don't think they would do that in a properly scoped beer site because, quite frankly, there just isn't that much overlap of communities.
user15026
@Yuki What even. I wanna know why he has all those mugs. I am the most curious.
@FEichinger In the case of alcohol, the high end of interest in consumption basically becomes all about knowing more about the production and the appreciation thereof.
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz but if homebrew becomes beer, then.....what if i wanna homebrew not-beer?
@AshleyNunn Might be a shop?
18:48
The problem with homebrew as it's scoped right now is that it's basically only about super-small-scale production.
user15026
@Yuki A shop I could never go in because I know I would bump and break something.
@AshleyNunn Probably just a collector.
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz How large of production before it isn't homebrew anymore?
12
A: Why not expand homebrew.stackexchange to include beer.stackexchange?

Robert CartainoI tend to agree with you. I will be evaluating the private beta of "Beer SE" soon, and this is what has become evident to me as I watch this site develop: My Beer SE Evaluation The cross-cultural interests between "Homebrew SE" and "Beer SE" have way more overlap than I would have anticipated. ...

@AshleyNunn Rule of thumb is "Once You Make Enough For The State To Get Involved."
@RedRiderX For each quest there's a quantity, and progress is tracked
user15026
18:49
@LessPop_MoreFizz Which tells me a fat lot of nothing, but okay.
It's about doing the necessary callbacks when the quest is completed
@AshleyNunn Because it's not clearly defined.
@fredley Ah I see
Difficult without passing all the state around everywhere
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz I figured.
18:50
@AshleyNunn It's not like I can say "Once you make more than 12 barrels, you are no longer a homebrewer."
I've swapped out Evasion +2 to Attack Up (L) (cc @Yuki).
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz I kinda gathered that, you don't need to repeat yourself.
@Wipqozn That's a ballsy move. I approve.
Going to see how I like playing without it. I may eventually make the nether armor for edgemaster, but I doubt it because it requires ALL the rare mats!
user15026
(sorry, I am just tired. we are going in circles, I think we agree, maybe? I dont even know anymore. This is getting ridiculous.)
user15026
18:51
I dont even care about the damn site.
user15026
(Although now I want beer)
@LessPop_MoreFizz Definitely. But I don't think the overlap goes both ways enough for a combined site.
@AshleyNunn I think we mostly agree on the principles and are just drawing different conclusions around them based on different experiences and hypotheticals.
Which is why we just end up talking past each other.
It could alienate the layperson or get cluttered with not-all-too-relevant questions.
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Thanks for making an assumption about me and my approach.
18:52
@RedRiderX Structural headaches are the worst
@AshleyNunn I am not sure that I am making any assumptions at all>
The real question is, would the homebrewers be annoyed by the laymen who just want to ask about Heineken and Budweiser things or whatnot?
Everyone has different experiences.'
You are clearly using different hypotheticals from me.
@fredley Indeed
We have both cited the same principles repeatedly.
We are drawing different conclusions.
user15026
18:53
@LessPop_MoreFizz It is the assumption I am talking past you, and thus implying I am not considering your stuff, that pisses me off tbh
@AshleyNunn my apologies for an ill considered turn of phrase then.
@RedRiderX Think I've got a solution. Keep track of when fight is won, when it's won do a callback to the room object to handle any potential outcomes
@badp That's the million dollar question.
@badp That's the thing. Finding the balance between alienating the laymen and keeping the experts focused ... I doubt it would work.
I think that there would be only so many questions about big-brand beers
18:55
@fredley So quests would be limited to taking place in one room?
Things seem to be getting a little serious in here, so if I may...SPORTSBALL!
but I'm not exactly a beer mega-expert
That actually raises the question whether or not a Beer-consumer site is really viable.
@RedRiderX A quest stage
(Or any alcohol-consumer site, for that matter.)
18:55
Oh
user15026
@FEichinger I think it could be, if it had something else to keep it going
In my six months here in Munich I've simply learned "Weissbier" is an okay choice of beer
@RedRiderX Quest stages can be run in parallel, I think
Or they will be able to be!
user15026
As a person who knows not much about alcohol, but likes it, I would theroetically like A place I could ask about stuff
@fredley Ah okay

Q: Name of the game where you build your own heroes, by farming weapons and body parts?

Sam FisherI'm trying to find this game, I can't remember the name. All I remember is you get like 1-3 heroes, there's PVE and PVP, and you can farm stuff such as additional weapons or armor or body parts and attach them to your own hero (like horns etc). It may be an older game, but you had some freedom of...

@badp Hey, I don't care.
Go see if I care about being gotten drunk.
18:58
@FEichinger Do you really not care?
Or is that your way of showing you care?
This is pretty interesting: http://bubblecursor.com/ I think I like the feature where it activates the input that the cursor is next to.
@RedRiderX Oh hell no.
Why not?
@RedRiderX If I want to select something, I click right on it and not "next to it".
@FEichinger Trying it
Uninstalling
Terrible
19:04
The mouse cursor is a pointer for a reason, and our UI is created with pixel precision in mind.
@FEichinger Which is why it sucks so much on mobile
While that bubble thing makes sense for touch displays, it's horribly inaccurate and just not made for these UIs.
Where you have lots of links close together, for example the star list, it's awful, I have no idea what's going on and neither does it
@fredley Definitely. We need better UX on mobile in general. But we can't translate a good mobile UX to desktop - or vice-versa.
This is pretty much the reason MetroUI sucks.
@FEichinger Yeah that makes the main difference.
19:06
@FEichinger Well, metro sucks if you're using a mouse, Desktop sucks if you're using your fingers
Other way round is fine though
1 min ago, by FEichinger
@fredley Definitely. We need better UX on mobile in general. But we can't translate a good mobile UX to desktop - or vice-versa.
@FEichinger Don't you quote messages at me!
@fredley Windows 8 Start > Windows 7 Start in virtually all use cases
@badp This is true
@badp I haven't used much 8
19:11
It's mainly the preconceived notions of what a start menu should be that is the problem.
Start works the same anyway, hit win, type
@RedRiderX UX would be so easy if nobody had ever designed an interface before
So true
ughhh today is so anxious
@spugsley is Ian home yet?
@badp he is home from Seattle but he went to play Magic tonight. I have a weird home-alone anxiety thing lately
it used to never bother me
19:14
@RedRiderX You think? I think the opposite. If you want to design something people understand how to use, you design it like something semantically similar that they already understand how to use
Significant other is significant?

I have started playing this game and I noticed that the default resolution is 1280x800 (16:10). My monitor is 1920x1200, and I would like to run the game at that resolution, but the highest available resolution in the game options is 1600x1200 (16:10) which looks incredibly bad. Does anyone know how I can enable the options to allow the game to run at my monitors

The problem is when you want to change the function without changing the semantics. Hence the Start issue.
@badp -? +.
or is it more like whispers and shadows or generic paranoia?
19:15
@badp it's like...something bad is going to happen and I'll pass out or something and I'll die because no one is home
@Lazers A ... non-deleted question that is posted by @Lazers like a deleted one? wat.
@Lazers New Lazers?
@spugsley Lately as in... within the past week? Or longer than that?
@Fluttershy since I got sick. Almost a month
@fredley That's just how @Lazers usually posts deleted questions that made it to the feed.
19:16
@spugsley Ah. There's the culprit!
Has @Mana made new lazers?
@spugsley The thought crossed my mind a few times during those few weeks
@Fluttershy yeah I'd imagine so :)
@FEichinger Yeah I know, hence the oddity
19:16
@fredley New Lazers are up and running but they're consistently being faster than the API and they don't onebox.
@spugsley Are you still sick? Or are you better?
@badp Surely new ultra-lazers can tell when a post will onebox and wait until then to post it?
@Fluttershy Still sick. I have some kind of stomach problem. I have an appointment with a GI doc later this month
@fredley How?
@badp By using some kind of computer
19:17
@fredley What'd the computer apparatus do?
@badp (hit the api endpoint that lazers does to generate the onebox and see if it would get a result)
@fredley I think they're internal
@badp Then get it inside SE somehow
unless you mean querying the API
@badp Well yes
19:19
I'm listening to websockets because they're push, so I don't have to use the API
Using the API would defeat the purpose.
@fredley Ah yeah good point it's easiest to teach people something by comparing it to something they already now
but then changing or deviating from that mental model once it's established?
I mean, I might want at some point later in the implementation to interface with the API in order to post what LAZERS missed during some sort of downtime, e.g.
Forget about it
@RedRiderX Yeah. This is the problem with skeumorphism.
Once you've made your beautiful wood-grain radio interface, where do you put the podcasts button?
@fredley on the bar with all the station names, obviously
obviously
19:22
@badp People who use the word obvious when designing UIs should be shot. Right after the people who use the word intuitive.
@fredley obviously.
@fredley But it's intuitively obvious!
HamStare @badp
(this may not work)
@fredley Obviously.
(No, it's not going to work)
@badp :(
19:23
@fredley Not to nit pick but skeumorphism is it controlling like an old radio, not literally looking like an old radio.
@RedRiderX so it should sound like crap?
@RedRiderX The buttons should stop working after a while?
@badp Perhaps
@RedRiderX The point about the podcasts button remains
@RedRiderX It should kill your ears when a phone comes into range?
19:25
@fredley Yes totally.
@FEichinger I CHANGED THE VERB OKAY
@RedRiderX I DON'T CAAAAARE!
@Yuki You play with water, you're going to get doused.
Elephant time-out:
19:26
@FEichinger But now your nitpick nitpicks don't make sense!
@RedRiderX They do! Because I'm nitpicking about the original version!
