15:00
@fredley Do you want some access DB with your hate? Since I have some of that crap to do today.
this next hour is statistically the most active period on chat for me throughout the day
so I'm going afk
@kalina Why?
I am currently AFK, please leave your message after the fire induced scream.
@Arperum To balance out her chat activity, I suppose.
Which doesn't really work when she's responding with "I am afk" ...
@FEichinger Stupid reason.
15:03
I've read the graph improperly
@Arperum Well, don't blame me!
this is actually the quietest point during my work day
progress is being made
and as such, I need to be more active than normal
sort of
15:04
so it's time to start an important and long winded discussion
so let's talk about angel cake
@kalina Screw you.
I think angel cake is such an awesome thing
because angels are awesome
and cake is awesome
@RedRiderX Your progress is weird.
and thus, angel cake is awesome
22 secs ago, by FEichinger
@kalina Screw you.
15:04
40 secs ago, by RedRiderX
sort of
I'm just taking out all the unnecessary bits now.
@RedRiderX Such as the weird lorum ipsum that is still there?
@Arperum my original response to this was too lewd for chat
hush :P
@RedRiderX Do I even want to know what that is?
46 mins ago, by RedRiderX
experiments in making desktop chat work on mobile
15:06
@Arperum all lorum ipsum is weird
@kalina Well, I guess we all know what you were gonna say anyway.
46 mins ago, by RedRiderX
AKA making my first userscript
nope
you haven't a clue what I was going to say
@FEichinger He's trying to fix mobile chat by using weird lorem ipsum things.
this was a completely original and unexpected statement
15:06
@Arperum ... hush.
@Arperum The lorem ipsum wasn't my idea!
@kalina Share it with me, then!
PROVE YOUR POINT!
nope
15:06
@kalina Share it with me then?
you can't make me
@Arperum ok
@kalina ... happyface
...not
OH GUYS
darn can you inject html with a userscript?
15:07
i need your help
@RedRiderX Of course.
oh guys, @Wandang needs our help
listening to sum41 and remembered this song in a video game
okay this is my first userscript so I have no idea what I'm doing
15:08
@kalina Can't help you there.
no, I can't do identify-this-obscure-soundtrack-questions
it was a 2d arcade scroller in which you could play a few different chars
each had 3 buttons to combo spells
@Wandang Mario B rothers
and could be played with 2 players
15:08
@Wandang Sonic
@Wandang Street Fighter
@Wandang Double Dragon
@Wandang Scroller? Do you mean shoot-em-up?
@FEichinger I know JS just not the packaging for user scripts
@RedRiderX Same as any other JavaScript.
but yeah I forget I could just inject with js
Hmm okay
Userscripts are, literally, JavaScript snippets inserted into the site.
15:09
And it just runs after everything else?
Depends on the UserScript agent.
Some run it on DOMReady, some add it after the HTML, some start it right before ...
Speaking of DOMReady, look up the HTMLDOM, will help you a lot.
2 hours 50 minutes
And you'll probably need lots of jQuery. All the jQuery.
15:10
I've done this before I just wasn't sure what context userscripts fell into
wait a minute
I can't tell the time
@kalina You sure?
but it sounds like they are all over the place
@kalina 1:50, I believe.
1 hour 50 minutes
don't inb4 me
15:10
inb4
INBFUCKING4
50 minutes for me, so 1 hour 50 minutes for you normally.
you could walk left right and up and down (it was in transversely perspective)
inb4
@FEichinger inb5
@kalina You inb4'd my inb4 ...
15:11
lots of enemies would appear
@FEichinger I know
the enemies were only humans
some with big muscles
Anyway, 1 hour 4 minutes.
@Wandang Wolfenstein
Metal Gear
the chars itself were humans too
15:11
Dangerous Dave
but with super powers like fireball or ice
Oh for heaven's sake, can someone switch the @kalina spam off?
no nothing of the above
@FEichinger it's not spam, I'm guessing @Wandang's game
hmm it was a ninja game but not with ninja cliche
15:12
@kalina You're guessing only to push your message count! You ain't fooling me!
@FEichinger I don't need to guess to push up my message count
that will happen naturally by me just being me
@kalina But it makes for a convenient excuse.
FAE
FAE
@Wandang clichés
you know, last Friday I said >900 things
morning @FAE
FAE
FAE
@kalina Ergh.
15:13
@FAE I know the feeling
damnit this game was soo good :/
FAE
FAE
@kalina Woke up this morning from someone drilling in the wall.
@kalina ...
@FAE that's what it was like all weekend where I'm staying atm
@FAE If you were @kalina, this would be starred for the mere mention of "drilling".
15:13
you would have an attack button, 1 def button and 1 jump button
FAE
FAE
All the walls here are cement, so it just radiates through a few apartments around wherever it's taking place
drilling and hammering
@FEichinger that's because the bridge is full of perverts
if you did attack + def + right or left it would be a spell
@kalina QED, I suppose.
@Wandang Your description isn't very good. There are just to many games that could fit that description.
15:14
@5pike totally
Especially Arcade games
well it was like 7 years ago
FAE
FAE
@kalina It happens so often that I seriously think my neighbors must have no smooth walls left and they're just pockmarked for the lolz or something.
@kalina But remember, you're Princess Pervert.
the game was pretty generic i give you that but it was old too
15:15
@FAE do what I do and play loud music from a really ugly weird genre
i would guess 1998-2003
@Wandang Well, you could get a Mame emulator and sift through romlists.
like dutch gabba
really really loud
it was on windows xp
FAE
FAE
@kalina Problem is I want to be sleeping when it happens
15:15
@FAE yeah I can sleep through music, I guess not everybody can
not sure if a flash game or standalone
oh it was standalone i am sure now
so normal exe game
argh, I need to do some work
FAE
FAE
@kalina I can't sleep through music with lyrics I can understand because my brain will just latch onto the lyrics. Whenever I used to use music to fall asleep, it'd have to be instrumental. Music as an alarm, I can sleep through because I'm already asleep, but in this case, it'd make it harder to go back to sleep.
@Wandang Oh, so it's not an Arcade game, but a PC game?
@FEichinger Yea, but @kalina would have phrased it "I woke up to drilling" or sommat.
15:17
@OrigamiRobot True enough.
@FAE yeah I know what you mean, most of the music I listen to has no vocals though
FAE
FAE
@OrigamiRobot That's kind of hard to sleep through.
You can perform this action again in 10 seconds
@5pike well its genre is arcade like beating a level and advance
@kalina oh gods DON'T DO THAT. Horrible crap
15:18
@FAE Obviously, since it woke her up.
@KevinvanderVelden it stops them from drilling and hammering though
this song was played in one of them
AH
you could even go versus where you would play in a wrestling ring
@kalina then play some proper metal or something! Not bloody dutch gabber crap
and you could take objects to throw
FAE
FAE
15:18
@Wandang Go to the wiki article for the song and see what other media it's been used in
@KevinvanderVelden no
@KevinvanderVelden No, the point really is that it has to be crap.
generally they'll come around and say something like "turn off that noise" and then I get to pull the whole "sorry, what? I couldn't hear you over all of the hammering and drilling" line
walk into a room while people are building stuff
UNRAGE
PROJECT COMPILED
15:19
@FEichinger meh, it could be survivable if you have proper noise cancelling headphones for the real music
pull a disapproving face
state "I can't believe you're all screwing in this room"
@fredley now for all the lovely runtime errors!
walk out again
@KevinvanderVelden shhhhhhhhh
@kalina Nope. NOPE. NOPENOPENOPE. Nope. Not starring that.
2
15:20
anyway brb I need to do some work for a minute or two
@fredley ANd then the recompiling after those are fixed.
@fredley what are you building anyway, work thing?
@KevinvanderVelden Yeah
could you tell me more games that come to your mind
damn
@Wandang State of Decay
15:21
@Wandang dota 2
New iOS app, requires getting up and running with OpenCV + XCode + iOS7
@kalina HUSH. WORK.
@Wandang Mass Effect
@KevinvanderVelden Hamstare
Getting XCode to work properly with anything is a challenge
15:21
STOP IT
@Wandang Quake
@Wandang Dota 2 is fun! I played one game of 88 minutes yesterday :D
@kalina dude
@fredley Triple-Ugh.
@Wandang well be more specific then
15:21
@Wandang Sorry, there are just to many games.
@Wandang you asked...
@FEichinger A whole day's worth of ugh
@fredley XCode is a disaster.
@JasonBerkan Yes
you never gave me a name of a game that had those criteria :/
15:22
It is
@Wandang well that might tell you something (we don't know)
It is possible to build iPhone apps without it, but it's getting harder and harder, and on balance it's a worse path to take
but but but
you know everything
I went to a panel discussion on coding for the Apple for Visual Studio developers. The guy running it started out by stating we would all hate XCode. And we did.
@JasonBerkan i hate it too
@JasonBerkan working on it right now
15:23
XCode works though some combination of voodoo and living of the pain and horror of the users.
it has a neat performance measurement and good emulator
thats about it
@DavidM Yes
about 17 hours ago, about 24 hours ago were left, so...
@Wandang I hate all IDEs
@fredley ed
Things that are that heavy and complex are just wrong
@badp ...
15:26
@fredley okay, how about Sublime Text 3?
@fredley The "3" part is important because it's got "search a symbol anywhere in my project"
@badp I use 2
@badp Is that an IDE?
@RedRiderX It's a text-editor
I haven't touched Xcode in the longest time for the sheer horror of having to work with Objective-C again.
@RedRiderX Not really, although you kinda can make it do IDEy things, much like with vim
15:27
You can plugin it up to make it like an IDE
Yeah I know I'm using it right now
But I don't
ST2 FTW
@badp Yeah I suppose
ST3 >> ST2
Glorious SublimeText Coding Master Race
15:28
Heh
@badp That much of an improvement?
@fredley Just "search for a symbol anywhere in my project" was a life saver for me
which is a feature ST2 does not have, I think
@badp That's not a big deal for me, I spend most of my time in only a handful of files anyway
Either views.py or models.py mostly
I think this goto anywhere feature is the big bullet point of ST3, so yeah, if you don't care about it then you're fine
although I still have some fanboyism for ST3 because it uses/has Python 3 bindings
(what language is ST actually written in?)
@badp Not on the Python 3 bandwagon yet
@badp Java
15:30
@fredley really?
@badp lol of course not
*shudders at the eclipse thought*
@fredley Consider that Python 2.7 is the only version of the language that's getting bug fixes
@badp Yeah
Python 3 will happen
15:31
If I had infinite time I'd love to "port" Sublime Text to the terminal
Next Django project I do (which I'm already gearing up for, mentally) will be Python 3
@badp unf
@fredley this means that when you ssh you don't have to give up and use nano, or vim, or emacs
@badp Oh I use SublimeFTP
It's awesome
Save -> syncs file over ssh to remote
Feels like I'm sshing nothin' at all!
not awesome enough to have been ported to ST3 yet, it seems
@fredley I'm doing this with WinSCP + Visual Studio
15:33
@badp I'll stick with ST2 until it is, it's my number one plugin
@3ventic Used to do with NP++
@fredley Fair enough
Used to do with NP++ too
Because Visual Studio is an IDE, and IDEs are bad
but then I started liking VS more
Why are IDEs bad?
uh, actually I can't find sublime ftp here
15:34
Why is @GnomeSlice suddenly a cyclops?
@3ventic Evolution.
@3ventic <insert two-hour rant>
@Arperum It only makes sense.

Q: How / can we ask about preparation for an expansion or new patch?

Bob2ChivThis concerns this question, but I think we can have a discussion more abstractly. What are the restrictions on asking about preparation for future content? In this case, there are a limited number of acceptable answers (less than 10 ways to spend gold on D3). The question is about current con...

15:37
@3ventic I prefer SATA.
@OrigamiRobot Oh, you!
@OrigamiRobot ಠ_ಠ
@3ventic THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU, THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU
♫ That's my OrigamiRobot! ♫
EXORCISE THE PHP
15:38
the PHP extension just broke..
Progress!
DAMN YOU @FREDLEY
At least I think it's progress
@3ventic Wait a second ... You're doing PHP in Visual Studio?
Shame on you.
15:39
You and your exorcising
SHAME ON YOU.
@FEichinger Why not?
it's better than notepad++...
@3ventic SHAAAAAAAAAAAME OOOOOOOOOON YOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUU!
@3ventic because... the only reason to EVER use visual studio is because you're using some microsoft product
15:39
@RedRiderX er... er... er... I can announce safely that what we are counting down to is not that.
PHP is not a microsoft product (and doesn't even need compiling)
@KevinvanderVelden I do that too
@badp Thank goodness I don't want that tight a deadline :P
@badp are you absolutely sure about that? Did they even tell you what it was?
easier to use one editor for everything than a million based on what you're doing..
15:40
I don't know how I feel about this "prepare for future of the game" question thing
@KevinvanderVelden confident
@3ventic exactly, use a proper editor for the editing and use visual studio for the compiling
Confirmed, countdown is for HL3.
(To be fair, I shouldn't be talking, I do my PHP the old-fashioned way: nano!)
It's asking how to interact with the currently existing game to best prepare for the future. Yes, it requires speculation, but it's also talking about the game as it currently exists.
15:40
@KevinvanderVelden VS is proper...
It hasn't failed me yet
@FEichinger I don't do PHP, but if I would do PHP I'd use Vim
@3ventic BWAHAHAHAHA. Yeh, no. It's not.
17 hours ago, by Yuki
@AshleyNunn inb4 @badp's announcement is actually "Hey, it's Martin Luther King Jr. Day!"
@3ventic it fails you every time, EVERY TIME
@KevinvanderVelden Meh, I don't like vim. Too much of a break in terms of usability.
15:41
@KevinvanderVelden I'm not seeing it
2 mins ago, by 3ventic
the PHP extension just broke..
HamStare @3ventic
@3ventic ಠ_ಠ
I disabled it by accident
"

What the fuck! You don't even have JavaScript enabled!
You need to enable it to see all the fucking cool shit on this website...
"
@FEichinger true, it has a learning-brick-wall. But it is the best at usabillity when you get used to it and customize it
So many things I can do with a dozen keys rather than manually slowly doing it
15:42
@KevinvanderVelden Meh. I like my editor plain and simple.
@3ventic Me neither. Editors are more what you are comfortable with than what they can do.
@FEichinger I like macros <3 macros
I'm comfortable in the Visual Studio editor and its integration with everything else on the project (source control, databases, bug reports, continuous integration) makes my job simpler, so I gladly use it.
The idea of being able to perform macros is appealing. But then I'd use vim for macros, not just everyday editing.
And most of the time, you can fake macros with multiple carets.
@badp I use it for every day editing because it has the most powerfull method of moving the cursor I know of
15:45
(in ST, ctrl-click adds a new caret, shift-right click makes a rectangular selection with a caret per line, etc.)
I type all my code into Microsoft Word, print it, scan that to PDF, run it through OCR, then copy that into VS.
5
And I'm not even joking, like 90% of developing is changing code and jumping around
Eidolon is a game about exploring a mysterious landscape and uncovering the stories of the people who lived there once before. It is a game about history, curiosity, interconnectedness, and the slow and inevitable beauty of life.
You will be dropped into the dreary and mystical Western Washington circa 2400 c.e. with a bow, fishing rod, and little to guide your way. Awaiting you is a vast landscape filled with wildlife, edible plants, and the historical artefacts of our now-dead culture—journals, newspapers, zines, brochures, transcripts, and more. You must spend your fleeting moments movin
It's very, very rare that you write more then a dozen lines in one go
15:46
@KevinvanderVelden ctrl-shift-r, type start of name of any function in the codebase, enter
This looks very very interesting.
and, after that, you can, um, use your mouse.
@badp yeah that, I keep my hands on the keyboard
So I don't have to go to the first place with the mouse, type 5 letters, mouse, type, mouse, type, you get the picture
@Sterno how are you reading that question?
@kalina With his reading glasses.
15:47
hilarious
@kalina Well, the D3 thing is an example of one such question, but the meta isn't about ONLY that D3 question
@OrigamiRobot Don't forget to take a photo, get it developed, and scan that in too
In particular, I don't remember the specifics anymore, but I remember every WOW expansion back when I played there were some pretty regular steps you could take to maximize profit before the patch hit without having to know too many particulars.
@OrigamiRobot Don't you write it down by hand first and then copy it into Word?
@Sterno in this instance though, it's provoked by the Diablo 3 question - since there hasn't ever been an expansion for Diablo 3 we can't do anything except speculate
15:49
@Yuki What am I, a caveman?
There is no precedent for how the gear scaling will change, how the economy will be affected, etc
You are of course free to downvote me and post your own answer
@OrigamiRobot Actually handwriting would be fairly advanced for a robot.
Just because I answered first doesn't mean I'm right
@OrigamiRobot do you do that in caps lock mode?
@kalina Or just leave a comment and do neither until I get my thoughts together and arrive at a conclusion!
15:49
@kalina There won't be an economy. /rant
@KevinvanderVelden vim proponents like to overestimate the amount of time spent moving one of your hands half a keyboard away
I don't know if we are yet, but mainly I just want to avoid us having a kneejerk reaction of "Oh, it's about something in the future? OFFTOPIC!"
Because I think there can be valid questions like that.
@OrigamiRobot You're getting ladder. You can stop ranting now.
but if the jump is easy enough to do with a keyboard, then it can probably be achieved with arrow keys, ctrl-arrow keys, page up/page down, etc.
@kalina You raise a pretty important point there: People "prepare for the change" because they want to be "ideal" when said change hits. So it most certainly is about "what is ideal after the change?", which is pure speculation. — FEichinger 1 min ago
15:51
and if it's more complicated than that, a click is likely to get you there mindlessly, rather than force you to do a context switch from solving your problem to solving the problem of getting to where you need to get to
@Frank It doesn't matter if everything is BoA.
@badp possibly, I do know that for most text editing tasks I'm the goto person because I'm much faster than the rest who don't use vim
@KevinvanderVelden they probably just enjoy the shine in your eyes when asked to perform boring mundane tasks :P
"We're going on a VIM adventure!"
@badp going back and forth between brackets "%", Selecting the inside of a brackets "vi(", those kinds of things, which are quite common for programmers in my experience, are quite a bit easier with vim then with the mouse
@badp meh, bother me for an hour to transform a CSV into a thing the SQL database can import or bother someone else for half a day
Usually they bother me for an hour
@KevinvanderVelden ctrl-m?
Just because you're not using vim it doesn't mean you can't have keyboard shortcuts (although I don't think Sublime Text does arbitrary-character parens matching)
I think you can get away with subsequent ctrl-shift-m keystrokes
You can also get a selection per regexp hit, then work on all of those at the same time :)
15:58
@badp it's not just the shortcuts. It's the sequence bit. You can combine different things to do a lot with few characters
I believe ST is the right compromise between power and not giving up absolutely everything about text editing you've learned in the rest of your life
Meh, never used sublime text (cause, you know, I already use Vim)
@KevinvanderVelden but now we're hardly in the "speed editing" category; that involves a lot of trial and error, undoing, backtracking, thinking, typoes...
I do wonder if there was a way to make vim act like the unix atc game
where text appears at the bottom as you type commands
@badp meh, experience reduces that
