It turned out he had a huge colon cancer growing but it hadn't metastasized yet. They took it with clear margins during the colonoscopy. A few more weeks and he could have had much bigger problems.

Basically the diagnostic problem is: You have a functional peripheral. Works on other computers. Plug it into this one, and the thing goes to hell. Including other features that shouldn't be affected.

Sounds like a defective motherboard to me.

If you're using a device with lower requirements it is probably not powering the port, and hence not causing the short to happen.

NOTE: Trying doing a fresh uninstall, reinstall of any firmware. If the firmware became corrupt or something, there is a possibility of a serious crash that could take out other components. Highly, highly, unlikely, but just want to rule it out
