Q: when an ally leaves a game can you control their units?

Hurrikaneso I played a 4v4, and right at the start of the game, 2 of my allies quit out right at the start. we ended up winning anyway, and as I was watching the replay, I noticed that 1 of the 2 allies who quit out actually built quite a few things. I figured that the other ally of ours was actually oc...

Over the last few months, we’ve been continually improving our central network hub at stackexchange.com:

We got a lot of feedback that community members also wanted to:

After a two week public beta test, we’re ready to announce tag sets. What’s a tag set? Hopefully, exactly what it sounds like — all questions matching a set of tags across one or more sites in the Stack Exchange network:

You can freely browse tag sets other users have set up — they’re all public — but you’ll need to be logged in through global auth to set up your own tag sets. This should be more or less automatic, but if it is not, click the login link at the top of the page. …

Does he not have a question mark?
To be honest, security essentials is pretty good
I didn't say it isn't.
@ArdaXi "who'd want that?" is sarcastic.
«Who'd want a definition update for my antivirus WHEN I CAN HAVE WINDOWS™ LIVE™ ESSENTIALS® 2010™©" »
Aw, my work won't let me log into Gaming any more... finally decided to block it. :/
14:27
@Powerlord :\
@Powerlord welcome to the corporate empire. I've been here a while
They haven't blocked Board and Card Games yet, but I bet it's only a matter of time.
The humorous part is when they block specific Wikipedia pages. I can't view the page for Portal, but I can for Portal 2.
Anyway, as for the picture, who'd want Windows Live Essentials? :O
@Powerlord have you read the file name? :)
14:31
What, was it a required update or something?
@Powerlord yes.
Reeeeally.
The Security Essentials definition update was marked optional, instead.
I thought it'd be optional like the original version was.
@Powerlord It may be optional to get the Live Essentials in the first place, but this update was not.
14:32
As for virus definitions being optional, WSE downloads updates on its own anyway.
@Powerlord Maybe, just maybe, it should not?
I mean, either that's handled WSE-side, or it's handled WU-side
I don't see why you should have it both ways!
I usually just ignore the Optional section anyway... it's clogged up with 35 language things on my Ultimate version.
and having it handled WU-side, like every other update, maybe actually isn't a bad idea instead of reinventing the wheel over and over again.
But I like reinventing the wheel!

Microsoft and Apple are only now catching up to what Linux distros have had for generations now.
"OMFG APP STORE WITH ONE-CLICK AUTOUPDATING! WHO WOULDA THUNK!!"
As soon as MS tries adding an app store, they'll get sued for megabucks.
Win8 will have one, most likely.
We'll see how long it takes for them to be sued. Want to make any guesses as to whom leads the charge?
I'm guessing Symantec.
14:39
@Powerlord Why would they care?
I'm pretty sure Microsoft doesn't really care about getting sued anymore
Computers come preloaded with their bloatware anyway.
Symantec cares because they distribute trial editions of their software with the help of places like Dell and HP.
It's preloaded on most OEMs.

Q: Why would someone say that adding Armor in League of Legends does not have diminishing returns?

Steven OxleyThe formula for calculating damage reduction from armor in League of Legends is Damage Reduction = Total Armor / (100 + Total Armor) It seems clear to me that this formula dictates that adding more armor has diminishing returns. For example, let's say my champion has 50 armor, which gives dam...

At times, I wish we had LaTeX support.

I've been pretty stressed lately
I just looked at resharper's To-do explorer and apparently my code has a lot of comments along the lines of // TODO: ffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu scattered around
Actually I was pointing out a picture where it showed how to throw a "STD Party"
@tzenes hm, it doesn't actually explain how to do that :/ the text is unreadable.
LaTeX support for gaming?
16:43
> League of Legends is Damage Reduction = Total Armor / (100 + Total Armor)
I guess it makes sense in questions like the above, but aside from that
that's not really unreadable without LaTeX
I think all sites could do with LaTeX support at any rate
well maybe some sites are too poor to afford LaTeX support did you ever think of that HMMM
-_-
@Feeds Goddamnit, I wish I was good enough at math to explain why he's wrong.
or rather, I can explain it simply, but I can't back it up coherently.
it's the same misconception that shows up with the armor formula in WoW and other games every so often. In reality you have increasing returns on armor.
16:52
@LessPop_MoreFizz what are the values Total Armor can take?
I haven't played LoL, but I'd guess based on the formula that they probably hover in the 50-300 or 400 range
@badp I agree, I really feel LaTeX support should be Markdown standard
2
thing is, if you go from 300 armor (75% mitigation) to 400 armor (80% mitigation) with that formula
your damage taken is going from 25% to 20% - that's a 20% increase in your overall mitigation from 100 marginal points of armor.
the percentages diminish
but the absolute amount of incoming damage required to reduce hp to 0 goes up at a constant ammount as armor increases
Sorry, but isn't that diminishing returns?
it doesn't diminish in effectiveness, only in absolute value.
16:57
his RoI for damage reduction decreases as he purchases
the amount of damage needed to kill you before it's mitigated rises at a constant rate.
that may be true, but that doesn't mean his armor doesn't have diminishing returns
based on the discontinuity in the damage curve, that would imply diminishing returns
the effect of armor on his hit points may not change, but the effect of armor on the damage he takes does
@tzenes the effectiveness of armor does not have diminishing returns. The represented values do.
STUPID POST EDITOR LET ME UPLOAD MORE THAN ONE IMAGE PER POST.
if we consider survival as incoming health - incoming damage, then it is in effect diminishing
@Less that assumes he will die at some point
this is not strictly true
17:00
As far as effective health it does not have diminishing returns, but in terms of armor reduction it most certainly does
@tzenes well yes, it does assume he will die at some point. Whats important is the time to live, and the ability of armor to increase that such that a heal can land or he can escape.
I think thats the key to explaining this to him
@tzenes Yep, writing up an answer now.
17:01
Dramatic.
bah, raven beat me to it.
it was a simple misunderstanding because of Raven's phrasing
Keven was talking about Damage Reduction, and Raven said: Armor does not have diminishing returns
Steven took this to mean: Damage Reduction does not have Diminishing returns
when Raven really meant: Effective Health does not have diminishing returns
@tzenes Right, the thing is Steven wasn't going just off of Ravens statement - it's reached the point the community where Armor == Effective Health and thus, the idea that it doesn't have diminishing returns is gospel.
which in turn, can be confusing because, yeah, the DR does diminish, but that's fundamentally kind of irrelevant.
17:08
I think it was also easy to mistake because Kevin was really talking about DR
easy to assume that Raven must have been too
Neeeeeerrds!

@LessPop_MoreFizz scuse me
This is what damage taken looks like right?
and if I want to know how many attacks I can survive if I have 1,000 hitpoints
I do 1,000/ damage taken
and get this:
Is that correct, @LessPop_MoreFizz?
Exactly @badp
Time to live is linear.
If your time to live against the incoming damage is Y, you can represent the effect of armor on that time to live as TTL=1/(1-DR)*Y
(Uses WoW's much bigger numbers and more complex formula, but the concept is the same.)

I clicked to watch «Look Around You: Germs.»
This video contains content from Sony Pictures, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds.
WTF?
Whatever use he may had of that content, it was quite definitely fair use.
18:05
A "pen armour" attack reduces the armount of armour you have, I take it?
@badp Presumably. Again, assuming LoL works like WoW (which is a reasonable assumption given it's history), armor penetrating attacks negate a percentage of the opponents armor and are, (surprise!) more effective against targets with less armor initially.
incidentally, that sort of fucked up scaling is (part of) why WoW just removed armor penetration as a player-attainable stat entirely. It did Really Bad Things to balance and scaling.
Thank you, I've decided it's not relevant to the answer anyway.
Dmitriy's not an example of non-diminishing returns. :)
Yeah, Dmitry is mainly pointing out that, in the real world, the best way to counter the fact that your opponent is likely to have some armor penetration is to get more armor.
and specifically in that example (armor vs. ArP) the gains of armor are extremely strong.
actually... no
the derivative is still negative.
Armor Penetration has increasing returns. But if your opponent has a fixed value of armor penetration, increasing your own armor value can diminish the return they see on the stat.
18:21
for my reference, percentual difference on damage taken by armor reduction. Hopefully.

@ArdaXi that's correct
I don't get why Alpha truncates the Y axis of the graph.

Oh, I guess the truncation sign is a bug.
You can see that the graph is also rendered above the X axis, so it clearly is truncating it.

@LessPop I have seen board games come up once or twice. We've also had a few that were *nix

@badp I'd almost say drop SF
for Apple just based on the existing backlog of questions we've had.
Look at how many iOS game questions we've had versus how many 'running a multiplayer server' questions we've had.
@LessPop_MoreFizz We can add Apple, that'd make 5
That said how many questions should have been migrated to Apple?
I'd see Apple adding us, not vice versa.
@badp How many should have been migrated to SF?
my point is that SF feels like a reach without a strong use case.

@alexanderpas Not really, the only legit answer is Windows as of now. :(
@LessPop_MoreFizz depends on the games that you play, Source runs on Mac (SteamPlay), and if you don't play the newest games, your favorite could be Ubuntu as well.
Source runs on mac, but the performance is... not very good atm.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Blame Apple for that ;)
well, yes, I know 10.6.5 fixes a lot of the issues and is.... slow in coming.
nonetheless, point stands.
