english?

@GnomeSlice ?

@OrigamiRobot I don't really understand that comment.
what does he mean by 'use'?

Keep open.
@TimStone Fistolution or Agnaktor Inferno?

@OrigamiRobot Oh. Makes sense. Okay now it sounds like better English, I did't realize the dupe was from the same poster.

@FEichinger Huh. Looks like he took down his entire site.

5:08 PM
Sounds like summer

@fbueckert Huh? Not for me.

@OrigamiRobot Fistolution.
Because fire.

Oops, I mean to ping @TrentHawkins

Also note that I have not played a second of Monster Hunter (unfortunately), so my recommendations come with zero guarantee.
It's okay, I was ready with an answer anyway.

5:10 PM
@fbueckert No. IT's about the wii version.
It's just one of the retro tracks.

@Wipqozn Ahh.

Although I did make a typo. Fuck.
4

Huh, I should've known that; I've done all of them.

@TimStone That sounds really sexual.
I didn't notice it until now.

@Wipqozn Anyways, SHUN! SHUUUUUUUUUN

5:11 PM
@TimStone A testament to your greatness.

Wow, those Microsoft Word Problems have at least one question whose flippant answer is also the right one/

@Wipqozn We can only assume the Fistolution will give those monsters a good pounding.

@TimStone ._.

> If Miguel’s computer is operating on Microsoft Word 2003, how many useful suggestions does Clippy have between the hours of 8 pm and 3 am?

@Powerlord None

5:12 PM
Flippant answer is 0, correct answer is 0... because Clippy is disabled by default in Word 2003.

It doesn't say he hasn't turned him on

@GnomeSlice When not presented with information, it's best to assume default.

@fbueckert He must have made a mistake with the title.
Because it doesn't make any sense.

@OrigamiRobot It mentions Clippy, which implies he's turned on.
@Wipqozn Kind of like you did just now you mean?

It may have been a bug on the site or something. He asked the new question before posting the old, so it autoloaded his old stuff and he never changed the title.

5:14 PM
@Wipqozn It could be. I kinda doubt it, though.

@GnomeSlice Does it?
It could be a trick question.

@BenBrocka Also Organic Panic recommended this: cantripgames.com/storywar
@OrigamiRobot It could be actually, I guess it's written like a test.

This user seems to be more, "Braindump information! Formatting, titles, who needs 'em?"

@fbueckert Braindumps make for crappy questions.

It's a Liopleurodon, Charlie, a magical Liopleurodon.

5:16 PM
@OrigamiRobot Indeed they do. So let's continue editing their questions and hope they get the hint.

@Ullallulloo Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuguuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

40 votes is not enough for one day

5:32 PM
I am not a fan of sympathy upvotes, but I think if your position is that you are going to downvote every lore question because you dislike lore questions on principle, you shouldn't argue that people are "voting wrong" if they upvote to counteract your downvote.
Pretty much any time you tell someone they are voting wrong and it doesn't involve serial voting or sockpuppets, you're probably in a pointless argument.

2 hours ago, by OrigamiRobot
@galacticninja I don't just "hate lore questions" I hate impractical questions. Not all lore questions are impractical.

Q: How can I change the time trial ghost?

zoeI'm currently doing time trials, and I just learned that my best lap on Ghost Valley 2 is 21 seconds. My ghost, however, uses a different record. How can I change it to use my best time?

I would upvote Lucky Charms, but SE has a thing against cereal upvoting.

@OrigamiRobot I don't really care about the specific case. I just hate everyone telling each other they're voting wrong.

5:38 PM
@Sterno You're voting wrong.

Downvoters also need to realize that if they downvote a question that they know is borderline and make it flip to a negative number, they're going to be bringing a whole lot more eyes to the question, which often makes people say "Huh... this isn't that bad? Why is it scored negative? Screw that, I'll give it an upvote even though I otherwise never would have cared."

@JasonBerkan For some reason this made me think of an animated gif I saw a few days ago where a woman walks into a kitchen and sees blood everywhere with the words "Your Next" written in blood... she's crying until she dips her finger in blood and draws in an ' and e

Complain about sympathy upvoting, sure, but understand why it happens and consider the impact your vote would have and if it would actually have the effect you desire.

@Sterno If someone is voting (or not voting) in anticipation of how other will vote, they're voting wrong.

And lastly, to finish my monologue, if someone asks for an explanation for their downvotes and you either don't feel like giving one or don't believe the end result will be constructive, ignore the request and move on.
@OrigamiRobot Prove it.
Show me somewhere where it says what's right and wrong to vote on.

5:46 PM
I mostly just have a problem with people claiming to know when things are being 'sympathy upvoted'
You don't know why people vote.

Voting is a tool to make good stuff bubble up and bad stuff get shoved down.

If you know your vote is going to have the opposite of the effect you desire, why do it?

@Sterno For answers. The use case for questions is muddier.

@OrigamiRobot I think this is an awesome guideline and it's what I use. I wish everyone did. However, people who don't use it aren't "wrong".

5:48 PM
I love peanut butter.
3

I recently wrote a Meta post on voting habits over on History.

What do we actually mean when we say they're "wrong"?
That we disagree with how they're voting, or that the SE system would rescind their vote if it knew the reason for it?

@OrigamiRobot Hmm... I too happen to like peanut butter, the star stays/

@Sterno The latter. If you downvote a question because you dislike the user, your vote shouldn't count.

@TrentHawkins I wasn't trying to get the stars removed, just providing something more star worthy.

5:50 PM
@Sterno I think it's more of a "It isn't conducive to the health of the site and the intent of the voting system".

@origigamirobot I guarantee you that people who quote your awesome diagram downvote certain user's questions because they're sick of the user.

@Sterno My problem is users complaining about downvotes when their question is at a net positive.
That's just whining.

@fbueckert My problem is with that and with people who engage them when they do. Let's just ignore it.

@Sterno I would not argue there.

@fbueckert So is complaining about upvotes when a question has net negative reputation gain.

5:51 PM
There are no words that rhyme with "silver"

I complain about sympathy upvotes, but just pointing out the reverse is true as well.

So is complaining about upvotes or downvotes, period, regardless of net score.

@Wipqozn Which is incredibly rare.

@OrigamiRobot Which was pretty much what my point was when I was talking to myself in chat up above.

Upvotes outweigh downvotes by a factor of 2.5 or 5.

5:52 PM
Having argument about whether or not people are doing it "wrong" is pointless (at least, in the comments of the question)

@OrigamiRobot I will ruinate you.

@GraceNote "I will urinate you"

@GraceNote ;P

I wouldn't even have left that comment if galacticninja didn't complain. each. and every. time. someone downvotes his questions without leaving a comment.
It's the height of passive aggressive whinery.

@fbueckert Nah man, passive aggressive starring is.

5:54 PM
@fbueckert Simply ignore it.

@Sterno And up until this point, I have. He came into chat to whine about his downvotes.

I mean, if you really want to bug him, just never explain the downvote, since it's clearly what annoys him. :)
Fight passive aggressiveness with passive aggressive silence!

@Sterno The only reason I said something in here was to stir up some drama. Nobody was fighting about anything today. ISN'T THIS WHAT YOU WANTED?

@OrigamiRobot IT IS!

@OrigamiRobot Pilfer is close enough to get away with.

5:57 PM
Drama's no fun if I don't get involved though.

I wish I knew why this parser wasn't working.
It's grabbing an element it shouldn't be.

@StrixVaria @OrigamiRobot I prefer "chilver"

@RonanForman Pretty sure you just made that up.

@StrixVaria Nope.

I found the word "cylver" in one of my design documents once.
I'm still not exactly sure how it's pronounced though.

6:00 PM
hm, looks like it's choking on tbody

@Wipqozn should use regexp for html :P

@tugs Why would I use regex when there are already existing libraries designed for parsing HTML?

@Wipqozn regex are fun

@Jasper I don't think anyone has ever given me problems.

I try to give @GnomeSlice every problem I can.

Oh, it's choking on tbody since Simple HTML DOM parser has a line of code to specifically ignore it.

Hi Jasper.

That's dumb. It should be in the docs, and haev an option to disable it. I shouldn't need to comment the code out.

user87637

I'm giving him a problem.

@GraceNote I am experiencing a problem!

6:07 PM
@Jasper And that's why I was able to do it without having to pass through you. ♪

@GraceNote Funny thing is you were. I had to refresh before the problem you gave me showed up.

user87637
Anyway, I caught this lol habit from some girl, lol.

@GnomeSlice Which weapons do you have in Croixleur at the moment, by the by?

@GraceNote Uh... I'd have to check. If you showed me them I could tell you which ones.
I haven't gotten any more in a while though

@Jasper I'd recommend attempting to cure yourself of that habit.
It's not as bad as XD constantly, but not far off.

@fbueckert Nah just kidding, I won't do it all the time, maybe once in ten lines.

@OrigamiRobot lol XD

@GraceNote Oh. Well, I have... er... the starting ones, the big mace that gives you an anti air attack, one that gives me a midair downward slash... I think a midair circular slash too

@GnomeSlice I only know that it's not any of the swords from the demo.

6:12 PM
It's also fun to end every line of an argument with someone with "End of discussion!"

@Jasper That may be tolerable. And thanks for not doing so past my limit.

@GnomeSlice Oh, shiny, you do have Metallion (the last one).

@Jasper Your neighbors must dislike you though.

I mostly use the ground slash one, the jumping air attack one, the charge attack one, and the aerial downward pound
@GraceNote Which?
The club?

user87637
@Ullallulloo Haha, well, I don't actually laugh, but I do sing very loudly.

6:13 PM
@GnomeSlice The aerial spin slash.

@GraceNote I may just be misremembering, but I think that's a thing I have.
The name sounds familiar too.

@Jasper what song?

user87637
I see @Ullallulloo is still the paper clip, hahax.

The big mace is also pretty nice to have since it can hit twice on those big enemies as well as hitting those flying enemies.

I sing loudly in my car. Also poorly, but that's anytime.

6:14 PM
@Jasper do you do dubstep?

user87637
@tugs Various, opera arias mostly.

@Jasper oh. I like dubstep better
@OrigamiRobot I find it amusing when I'm a pedestrian and I can hear people singing as they drive by.

I'm going to be terrified whenever the next round of mod elections that one of you people might get elected.

Anyway, Metallion (the circular slash in the air) actually has some crazy things you can do with it, on both flying and grounded foes, if you've got the dexterity to pull it off.

@tugs I turn the radio volume up louder than I sing.

@OrigamiRobot That's a shame

But I can't commit mod abuse without those powers!

I never understood the hate for "misusing" literally.

@Sterno I ended up with ligaturely when I tried to mesh them together. I created a monster.

Hyperbole is a thing that happens.

6:26 PM
It's really, really stupid.
Aug 12 at 17:06, by SaintWacko
When one of the definitions of "literally" is "not literally"

@OrigamiRobot It literally happens all the time.

In music notation, a ligature is a graphic symbol representing two or more notes performed in a single gesture, and on a single syllable, primarily in use ca. 800–1650 AD. They are characteristic of neumatic (chant) and mensural notation. The notation and meaning of ligatures has changed significantly throughout Western music history, and their precise interpretation is a continuing subject of debate among musicologists. History Plainchant The early notation of plainchant, particularly Gregorian chant, used a series of shapes called neumes, which served as reminders of music that was t...
holy flags

Man, I almost never validate chat flags.

@GnomeSlice Y'know, for the moment, I confused ligatures with ligaments.

@Ullallulloo here's a link to a smarter and more entertaining writer on the use of the word literally

6:28 PM
@GraceNote It's funny because ligature is literally a mashup

@OrigamiRobot Which I'm fine with, but if you change the one word that means "This isn't hyperbole." into hyperbole, then that's dumb.

@GraceNote Heh.

@GraceNote Sounds like ligature, which isn't something you ever want to snap.

Without context, "A$$holes" might have been perfectly appropriate!

@Sterno I approved that one and I shouldn't have/

6:28 PM
@Ullallulloo "literally" does not mean "seriously"

It just looked like someone trying to get around a text filter

But basically, it's been in use in that way for 250+ years. The english language is not going to suddenly change because somebody said something on the internet

Oh, right, there is also the reference of ligature marks. Oh yeah.

@tugs Oh, it'll change. It just won't become more restrictive.

@OrigamiRobot It means "exactly".

6:30 PM
@Ullallulloo Which is a perfectly fine word to hyperbolize with.

I blame the Internet.
(and @Wipqozn)

@OrigamiRobot Not really...

When someone says 'I literally pissed myself laughing', what they should really be saying is 'I figuratively pissed myself laughing'.
Unless they actually did piss themselves.

It sounds stupid if you say "I caught a fish exactly a mile long."

In which case they wouldn't be bragging about it.

6:31 PM
Solution: Take people seriously when they misuse 'literally'

I ran exactly a billion miles yesterday.

@Sterno Can't tell if on purpose.

@Sterno grrr, again my company blocks it as "tasteless"

@OrigamiRobot I thought about doing something intentionally but did that one unintentionally

6:32 PM
I hate that flag counter bug,.

It's there until I refresh, and I never even got to see the flag!

@GnomeSlice honestly, finding more internet-peeving on the same topic does not make anyone "right"

@Ullallulloo I wake up at exactly 5am every day.

@Sterno You linked to Cracked. This makes it both educational and funny.

6:34 PM
Turns out that wasn't the article I wanted, either.
They had another one about "literally" too

@OrigamiRobot I don't see any other way to take that than at face value.

@GnomeSlice You've never been to Cracked.Com?
@GnomeSlice So, here are some words that you'll see used incorrectly on a daily basis, and a helpful guide as to just how big of a dick you'd have to be to correct people on it. We have also included many pictures of these words being read by women with large boobs.

Best description of irony

@Sterno I count 8 words; irregardless is not a word, and my autocorrect script is adamant on that subject, apparently, because I had to type that manually.

@BenBrocka I'd continue but I suddenly (and perhaps fittingly) became very thirsty right now.

6:40 PM
@Unionhawk You should write them a strongly worded letter that they misused the word "word".

@Unionhawk how much of a dick does that make the autocorrect script?

@tugs Zero; it's doing its goddamn job.

@Unionhawk The description for irregardless says just that too.

Though, I'm not a fan of when I try to start a sentence with "eh..." in a game, because it reads my input as "teh"

@GnomeSlice I think it would be ironic if we were all made of Iron.

Anyway, literally is a word that tends to be paired with sarcasm

@Unionhawk I'm trying to figure why it'd consider "teh" a word over "eh".

@alexanderpas ;_;

@GraceNote Whenever I type something that it thinks is a mistake, but I want to demonstrate the mistake, I have to go back and make it wrong again. It's just AHK reading key inputs. It doesn't know better.

I honestly don't care if people say "irregardless"
I hate it when people say "suppose to" or "use to"

Not unirregardless

6:46 PM
How about "could care less" when they mean "couldn't care less"?

@OrigamiRobot They should of known that it's a past tense verb there.

Irregardless is a word commonly used in place of regardless or irrespective, which has caused controversy since the early twentieth century, though the word appeared in print as early as 1795. Most dictionaries list it as "nonstandard" or "incorrect". Origin The origin of irregardless is not known for certain, but the speculation among references is that it may be a blend, or portmanteau word, of irrespective and regardless, both of which are commonly accepted standard English words. By blending these words, a word is created whose meaning is not predictable from the meanings of its const...

I don't care what grammar people use/misuse, as long as they're saying intelligent things.

@OrigamiRobot I always hated riding shotgun when I was a kid

Rachel/Rebecca. I don't really care.

I admit oddities though

@tugs You are not human.

@OrigamiRobot ok

I still don't really like riding shotgun

I am an authority on these things.

@fbueckert I think it's probably off topic but I'm not sure "shopping advice" is the right reason. The problem with "shopping advice" questions is not really that it's related to shopping, but that it's a popularity contest sort of thing

Because my mother always comments on everything I do if I sit where she can see me when she's driving.

@GnomeSlice Also not human.

@OrigamiRobot Sorry.

@GnomeSlice When I ride with my mom, I just stare at her until she laughs. She hates laughing at my immature/obnoxious jokes.

@Sterno My understanding of shopping advice is if you're asking what to buy, or where to buy it, it's off-topic, because those answers don't withstand the test of time.

I think we really need to come up with a new name for the "shopping advice" thing.

I'm not exactly sure how this question doesn't hit those exact criteria.

@fbueckert I think the "what to buy" and the "where to buy" are two different things and closed for different reasons

@OrigamiRobot After the riding shotgun comment, I had to reread your comment several times before I understood it.

@Sterno How so?
Or rather, not how so, but does it matter?
It's off-topic, regardless.
