@Wipqozn IMO, everything that Java does well other languages have done better, but there's definitely a lot of things it does better than C++.

And I guess its performance is not bad for something that runs in a VM and uses managed memory

Just having a common VM target and calling convention is huge, and hotspot is actually really good -- JVM programs pay a cost in startup time and RAM footprint but are very fast.

And I appreciate Java's culture of detailed micro-level documentation for everything, although the lack of macro-level documentation for anything is A Problem.

And yeah I definitely would not call it "arcane". "baroque" is probably Ruby, it's covered in random curlicues and decorations that are aesthetically pleasing but of dubious practical value.

i had to do a set of programming tasks for one of my CompSci classes in college, and we had the restriction that our int main(){} could only call the default constructor of our class. (we were using c++)

so i programmed as normal, then before i submitted it, i copied and pasted my int main() into my default constructor and then called my default constructor from main

@ToxicFrog i also wrote my own loops using combined if and goto statements in protest. also they used more lines of code, and we were being scored on the amount of lines of code we produced, not readibility

@Yuuki I took a class on Java that was 100% theory and had no coding in it at all. It was weird. But it actually helped a lot once I started working in Java later on.

The teacher put String[] s; on the board and asked, "What is s?"

And wasn't satisfied with any answers, what he was looking for was "a pointer to an array of pointers to strings".

It sounded stupid but it seriously helped me wrap my head around the language down the line.

@Exeggutor That reminds me of a time in a third year course, where on a test a question (from a masters student, I think) was "Is a constant a variable?" and the whole class got it wrong since we said "No". We got into a big argument with him about it, with our case being "No dude you get what you're saying, but words have meaning and you're being a pedantic ass"

Not the same thing really, but it reminded me of it

England beat Panama 6-1 yesterday.

@Dragonrage It's more respectful to take it easy and play boring soccer for the remainder of the game if you're definitely going to win anyway or something stupid.

But in the World Cup once in a while who advances comes down to cumulative goal differential so in those cases it's "ok" to just score as many points as possible.

The thing that makes no sense to me in soccer is that diving and pretending to be hurt to attempt to draw a foul is like the most dishonorable possible action, yet it's CONSTANT.

Honestly I like the pace in soccer better too.

They're pretty similar to be honest.

The main strategies are the same: 1) get the ball into the offensive zone and then move it around a lot until you get a good opportunity, or 2) wait for your opponent to make a mistake in your zone and then get a rush opportunity against the goalie.

The actually mechanics of both are slightly different.

They call it VAR (video assistant referee) and he can signal the on-field ref when he thinks a call went wrong.

The first time I really paid any attention it it was the 7-1 Brazil vs Germany game, and only then becasue someone I knew was a huge brazil fan. In an office with someone that was a huge Germany fan (since he was German).

An area of my modded server has recently started lagging like crazy. When I enter it, my fps drops from playable (30 FPS and up) down to a literal sideshow. Q: Blank screen with HDMI and AV plugged in

Using an Xbox 360 with a monitor. The HDMI works OK, until I plug in an AV plug, which I want to use for sound. At this point I get sound but a blank screen. It looks as if the AV plug cuts off the HDMI connection. Any solutions?

As D.Va, I've often come up against Brigitte and found myself lacking. I try to use my defense matrix to prevent her from striking me with her rocket flail, but she still gets me. What approach can I take to beat her? How does Brigitte defeat D.va?
