I mean, the guy being a douche checks out

@Chippies Yeah. Where's @Strix to murder it?

@Frank Idk if deleting it now is the right thing to do. It shouldn't have been reopened, but I'm not sure if deleting it after the fact really makes sense

@Chippies Seeing as how it was edited in bad faith, we don't reopen such.

@Sterno So, calling bullshit on something that he admits never actually happens is a "lack of reading comprehension"

We delete them. Abusing our exception to game id shouldn't be rewarded.

9:02 PM
@Frank but that's the thing - it was reopened

so apparently the castlevania spiritual successor has now dropped Wii U support

anyways, I don't care either way

@Chippies Due to a bad faith edit.

basically sounds like the exact same situation as Yooka Laylee

The amount the hospital tried to bill my insurance for my son's surgery: $23,508. The amount the insurance actually pays because it has "discounts": $4184
What the actual fuck.

9:03 PM
@StrixVaria Charge masters.

Meanwhile if it weren't covered, I'd be responsible for that first amount.

@Frank I feel like we had this same exact issue long ago where someone edited a screenshot after finding the game name and got the question reopened

@Chippies And we have a meta about it.
It says: its abuse
Don't do it.

@Frank if the meta says what to do in such a situation then that's what should be done. I didn't know there was one

@murgatroid99 Like I said, being a douche checks out
@StrixVaria The amount they would have told you it would cost if you had to ask before instead of after: NO ONE KNOWS

9:05 PM
@murgatroid99 I mean i can see where you're coming from but I don't think that makes it a non useful distinction. lots of sports separate by weight class too. If your going by strength, well that's where the whole competition part comes in isn't it? training
you're

Medical billing is literally the dumbest.
@StrixVaria How's your son doing?

DpeifThis Strike Team mission has 3 Traits that are modifiers for this particular mission: Is there anywhere that lists the Traits and their effects, in-game or otherwise? E.g. what does "No Room For Error" actually mean?

sometimes you get billed more because you have insurance. I had a dentist once drop the price on my fillings from 250$ to 180$ because I didn't have insurance

@GnomeSlice I'm not saying that it's not useful so much as that we shouldn't expect it to be perfect. There's going to be a lot of variation in competitive ability within a gender both due to things people can control and things they can't control. The issue here is going after this particular difference, which happens to be something that people are prejudiced against already.

I don't think the issue is perceived prejudice
thats not why the other competitors are upset, anywag

9:13 PM
Well, the root question is "why is there gender division in sports?". If it's a question about "fairness", then why isn't <specific attribute> also a division factor? Some sports have weight classes, sure, but what about other things like ratio of slow and fast twitch muscles?

@GnomeSlice That's not explicitly why the other competitors are upset. But when the article keeps using scare quotes around the word "identifies", it's clear that that's why the article's author is upset

There's an endless number of factors that can be counted to measure "fairness". Why do we use gender?
(Real question actually, not rhetorical)

@Sterno They said "$3000 and up" actually.
So yeah, I guess $23k is higher than $3k

@Yuuki It's probably because (at least from a simplified perspective), it's binary. You don't have to do any work to define division bounds or whatever. You can contrast with weight classes, where you have to decide how many weight classes to have, and how they have to be divided

@Sterno He'd be doing better if UPS didn't lose his contact lens, but he's healthy!

9:16 PM
@murgatroid99 Who cares about the author. Plus, being upset about stuff is ok

As far as I can understand, it's because gender acts a shorthand for various biological factors (testosterone among them) but is also abstract enough from these various factors that you can set up a division while still allowing a large spectrum of capability.

Yeah testosterone is a thing, at the very least this is equivalent to doping

If testosterone is the concern, then divide competitions by testosterone concentration rather than gender.

@GnomeSlice You're the one who linked that article. And sure, being upset about stuff in general is OK, but being upset with a minority group being accommodated fairly is called bigotry
@Yuuki The article explicitly says that the division between genders, at least in the weightlifting competition they described, is based on testosterone concentration

Q: FML appears to be missing any signature data. This is not a good thing (1)

Alondra741I installed Forge (1.8.9-11.15.1.1722) server (with Sponge 1.8.9-1691-3.1.0-BETA-1046). The host (running Debian) is headless, Minecraft starts correctly, but then it always sends me back to the launcher and says "GAME CRASH An unexpected error has occurred and the game has crashed. We are sorry...

9:19 PM
@murgatroid99 Then I don't see how the testosterone doping argument/concern is tenable.

@Yuuki It looks like the fallback argument in the article is "they developed with testosterone, and that development persists after the testosterone concentration changes"
But, of course, if you bring that into the argument, you open it up to any other developmental differences people might have experienced

@StrixVaria The two times I ever tried I couldn't get anyone to give me even a rough estimate, or even tell me who I'd need to talk to to do that

@murgatroid99 Yeah, so? It's the sorry I'm concerned with

@ash, i require your assistance with a matter of english composition if you have a moment

9:21 PM
Because I'm too lazy to copy all the text.

@Yuuki there are more factors between men and women than testosterone

@GnomeSlice OK, if you don't necessarily endorse the author's perspective, why are you concerned about it?

user15026
@Dragonrage what's up?

would it be "Which lanes is Annie best suited to?" or "Which lanes are Annie best suited to?"
im leaning to the latter

@murgatroid99 because the winner had an unfair advantage

9:23 PM
@GnomeSlice So what? There are also differences between tall people and short people. But we don't split many sports by height. There are differences between heavy people and light people, but we don't divide many sports by weight. There are differences that aren't easily measurable directly that aren't gender-related, and we don't divide based on those.

an average dude is stronger thab an average woman
granted theres nothing average about weightlifters

@GnomeSlice I think we're going in circles, a little. What makes this advantage due to inherent body characteristics unfair compared to other advantages due to inherent body characteristics?

user15026
@Dragonrage that whole structure is awkward. Why not "Which lanes are best for Annie?"

that seems logical. this is why i asked the expert

If there are no actual differences between male and female in terms of suitability to the sport, why have mens vs womens divisions?

9:25 PM
idj I guess it's just a new advantage, short people dont become basketball players there were insurmountable boundaries, and now women have a new one to face
idk*
@Sterno It's silly in stone and not others. american football should have it. soccer not so much
some*
powerlifting for sure

@Sterno That premise kind of comes out of nowhere. Nobody in this conversation said that there are no actual differences between men and women in terms of suitability to a sport.

@murgatroid99 You seemed to be saying testosterone was the only one that mattered

Sorta sounded like it to me

But I'm coming into this late
and I also have to go!
so just ignore me

The issue with using gender as a dividing factor is that you can't extricate it from its social context. You can go on and on about how "average male is stronger than average female" and how various gender differences factor into physical differences. But gender is a key factor in our identity as well so when you say that someone shouldn't compete in a gender division because of <X reason> you are also denying a part of their identity even if that's not your explicit goal.

9:29 PM
@Sterno I didn't say that

@Yuuki But fuck you if it is your goal (not accusing anyone here just a general statement)

@Yuuki Also, "the average male is stronger than the average female" is a weak argument. Both of those distributions are quite wide.

I view my gender as a bigger part of my identity than how much testosterone I have in my body or how many twitch muscles I have or whether I have a higher concentration of hemoglobin in my blood. I, personally, would be perfectly fine with sports segregating on those factors. But it's becoming increasingly clear that gender is no longer a viable dividing factor.

Due to the bad faith edit and our existing policy for id questions with post-closure screenshots, I am voting to re-close and delete this question. — Frank 3 mins ago

I think it's true that if we stop dividing sports by gender, then some sports such as weight lifting will become predominately male. But we already accept that basketball is predominately tall people, and gymnasts are mostly light/thin/short.
In other words, we already know that some physical characteristics make people more or less competitive in certain sports. It's not unreasonable to consider that secondary sex characteristics are simply additional such characteristics

9:38 PM

@Dragonrage Usually, the ones on exams are shorter and/or more leniently graded

@murgatroid99 fat people gymnastics actually sounds like it would be fun/impressive to watch. We're all used to skinny fit people being great at that stuff, so it's not as impressive

Q: Can the Giant Horse die?

lxgrOnce tamed, can the Giant Horse die like any other horse? If it does: Will it respawn in its original area? Or will it be lost forever?

@Chippies But this kind of brings up the original problem again: where do you draw the line? And wherever the line is drawn, it's likely that the fittest, skinniest people on each side of the line will be competitive

@murgatroid99 and that's the problem with competitive sports in general. Eventually in any sports category someone will find the most suitable type of people and those people will dominate the sport category

9:42 PM
@Chippies I think in some cases, like weight classes in combat sports, there's enough variance independent of weight that the whole span of the weight class is viably competitive

maybe the scores could be raised/lowered based on the stats of the people participating
so a skinnier person would get a score reduction and a chubby person would get added score

@Chippies I think adding calculations like that would make the competition more arbitrary than fair

or whatever the division is in (height, weight, testosterone levels)

We should just divide sports on the spectrum of affinity to Friday.

It's hard to do that without simply weighting the advantage towards one end or the other

9:44 PM
@murgatroid99 I didn't say it was perfect, but neither is the current way
at the very least, it would mix things up for a while until someone finds a way to exploit it

@Chippies My point is that adding calculations like that adds an additional thing for competitors to min-max that's outside of the actual competition

I mean that already happens in weight class fighting sports to an extent

@murgatroid99 Yeah, various Olympic sports already have this thing with difficulty weights (diving, ice skating, etc.). I'm not sure if it's a concern or actual problem, but sometimes I wonder if the system favors an athlete performing a low-difficulty routine consistently over an athlete risking spotty performance on a high-difficulty routine.

@Yuuki a lot of times (some times anyway) this is balanced by "choose best score of several or a couple runs"

Or vice-versa, I guess.

9:51 PM
We should just not play sportsball

Competitive movie watching, go!
