someone else should guide you further though, as I don't know much about any of these processes

Cause I want to find the answer

but I reset my Windows 10 laptop, installed and signed in Chrome, and now I lost 250 or so bookmarks

I voted to reopen the question. That will stick it on the reopen queue, where other people will (hopefully) see it

on both my desktop and my laptop

Thank you

10:02 PM
Also: Closed Questions Are Not Bad Questions

Yeah they are

@Yuuki One of the reasons I've always liked the "put on hold" phrasing during the first week

otherwise they wouldn't be closed

@TheGreatDuck No, they're not
it depends on what you call a bad question
There are a ton of questions that are good, but asked wrong

in this case it's that the game does not warrant questions and so it was perceived as a duplicate

10:04 PM
@TheGreatDuck That's not how it works at all

@TheGreatDuck Most of the time questions are closed just because they need additional details or retooling -- they may be poor now but the reason why they're closed and not just deleted is because they can be improved

a question about a bad game is a bad question IMO

@TheGreatDuck There are many reasons for a question to be closed. Not all of those reasons means that a question is a bad question.

questions must be noteworthy is SE right?

People voted to close as a duplicate because they thought it was the same question

10:04 PM
No

@TheGreatDuck No, that's Wikipedia.

@TheGreatDuck not at all

Yeah
In that order, mobile

As long as there's a person somewhere in the world to answer it and it's on topic....

I cast a reopen because they're similar but not the same (and probably not the same solution)

10:05 PM
@quartata and it's asked with proper adherence to the rules

@Nzall True, true. That's kind of a part of "on topic" in my mind but I can see exceptions
You could have a programming question filled with obscenities for instance

"On-topic" is one of the rules for asking questions

@quartata "HOW THE F--K DO YOU F--KING CLEAR THIS F--KING BATTLETOADS LEVEL, JESUS F--K?" doesn't seem like it has enough obscenities, imo.

@Yuuki haha

Not sure why this question is getting so many downvotes. :\

10:09 PM
@Fluttershy Lore questions always bring out the downvotes.

@Yuuki I know. Still not sure why, though. If people hate them so much, why allow them?

The fact that the Koroks exist makes me think that BotW takes place in the Wind Waker timeline.

@Fluttershy Some people hate them. But not enough to actually vote for them being off topic

@murgatroid99 Has that not been brought up on meta?

it's not because it's a lore question
it's because it is a zelda question
about a game that just. came. out.

10:11 PM
@TheGreatDuck we don't discriminate games
(as long as we can all agree it's a game)

@TheGreatDuck We don't mind questions about newly released games. :P

it's annoying that people cannot be patient. The people who figure out that stuff just got to playing it yesterday from what I saw online. If they were just patient, they;d have their answer.

@TheGreatDuck those are the questions that are the most popular

@TheGreatDuck It's been out for a week

yeah but the game just came out. Obviously nobody has theorized about it yet. There's no credible answer. It's nothing but bias.

10:13 PM
@TheGreatDuck I don't think this is a common attitude among voters on this site

when everything is figured out, there's no questions. Without questions, this site wouldn't exist

I'd say that's sufficient time to start asking questions

@TheGreatDuck questions incentivize people to theorize and test stuff

@Chippies you don't theorize to find a correct determinable question. You theorize to make your own opinions.
hence the issue of it not being an answerable question

People start asking questions about games as soon as they come out, and we encourage that
It doesn't matter that the answer is not yet known

10:14 PM
@TheGreatDuck if a question picks someone's curiosity, it's often enough to make them want to answer it

Speaking of which I'm pretty tempted to buy a Switch just for Breath of the Wild. I skipped the Wii U but I might get back to the Nintendo console train for this

@TheGreatDuck Answerability has little to do with timeline of release.

In some of the best cases, the answer to a question is only known because the question was asked, and people went looking for the answer

there have been multiple questions I would have never thought to ask myself, but after reading them, got curious enough to figure out the answer

can anyone that has it testify to it?

10:15 PM
@quartata On the one hand, I'd say it's definitely worth it (it has been for me). On the other hand, it might be a good idea to wait either for the holiday season or until a few games that you want have come out.

I'm considering getting Breath of the Wild for the WiiU, because I already have one of those

@murgatroid99 here's the problem though. Asking about storyline in the game is fine because it can actually be found in the game. We can only answer a question about date if and only if the date is actually given in the game.

@Yuuki Oh yeah, not now. I'll definitely wait until the holidays

@quartata Testify to what? That BotW is worth getting a Switch? I did and I feel it's worth it.

@quartata EB Games/Gamestop has a really good trade-in deal, but I guess where you skipped the WiiU, it doesn't really apply to you

10:16 PM
@Yuuki Cool.

But that's me. Don't feel compelled to get it because I said so.

@Chippies I have a 3DS but I definitely don't want to trade that in

we don't know if the question has one true answer. It might be that one can wage three equally viable arguments and therefore the question is deemed closable as "opinion based"

from what I can tell from the benchmarks and whatnot, the Switch version of BotW is superior to WiiU

@Yuuki I know, I'm sourcing from several places :P

10:17 PM
i personally feel its better to let the theorizing community deal with it and then ask. They've already said many times that they are getting to it.

@TheGreatDuck It's more nuanced than that

@quartata I think it has to be WiiU to get the best deal. For a 3DS you'd just get double credits towards the Switch and that might not be as lucrative

@TheGreatDuck We don't care, at all, what other communities have or haven't figured out, in regards to asking questions

@TheGreatDuck Who is this "theorizing community" and why do they get to decide when is the best time to ask lore questions?

@Chippies Doesn't help that the two closest Gamestops appear to have closed. :(

10:18 PM
i just mean that the question is opinion based

@Yuuki reddit

and that it's best that it not be asked as a formal question

@quartata you're not missing out on much - pretty sure Switch is sold out globally

@Yuuki i just mean the people on the internet who theorize about games.

No, it's not opinion-based. "Is BotW a good game?" is an opinion-based question.

10:18 PM
:p

The timeline question is, however, an open-ended question.

@TheGreatDuck As I said, it's more nuanced than that. If you can back up your answers with facts, they're not "purely opinion based"

Open-ended != opinion-based.

@Chippies and I think it's worth noting it was a global sales record so it's not like they didn't kind of try to mitigate that

@Unionhawk Really? That's great -- I've been somewhat worried about Nintendo for the past couple years

Q: How do I get past the Sea Snake?

PikachuleaderHow do I get past the Sea Snake in Candy Box 2? It won't die. I've even tried killing it with the enchanted Monkey Staff.

@Yuuki it does in the context of a site demanding actual answers. Math might allow that in terms of unsolved problems.... but they still have a solution.

@Unionhawk Idk, it's Nintendo, so I'm kinda skeptical that they didn't limit the supply to some extent

we don't know yet if BOTW is even meant to be in ANY timeline.

@TheGreatDuck OK. We're not Math. We don't have the same exact standards

@TheGreatDuck And that is also an answer.

10:20 PM
@quartata Nintendo finds a way

@Unionhawk Definitely.

@Yuuki nevermind. I'm just saying my opinion on why people downvoted.

I think Jeff Goldblum said that

it's a question that might not have an answer.

@quartata you're underestimating Nintendo fanboys :P

10:21 PM
As far as my views on question scope go, questions should not be closed solely based on whether or not an answer exists.

Whenever you think Nintendo is dying, they release new Pokémon new Mario new zelda new Mario kart and everything is good

@TheGreatDuck I don't think you have a better understanding than we do of the tendencies our community has when voting on posts

Personally, I don't understand how Nintendo manages to do everything they do and people still buy all their stuff
but good for them

I mean we've gone through this before with the Gamecube and they definitely lived

@Chippies at the end of the day, Nintendo is good at making fun games

10:22 PM
@Chippies I mean, I say the same thing for Ubisoft and EA but hey.

@Unionhawk I just wish they'd stop focusing on hardware as much

Actually saying that Nintendo "lived" during the Wii/DS era is an understatement
cha ching

people buy their hardware for a couple of games and that's crazy

@murgatroid99 we're all speculating. I don't see how I am excluded from that? And I can see how one might think the question is ill raised considering how most nintendo game timelines are purely speculation based. We're lucky to even /have/ a zelda timeline.
official i mean

Switch is literally selling right now as an accessory to the BotW

10:23 PM
@Chippies It'll get more games obviously.
I didn't buy Nintendo consoles just for Nintendo games

@quartata I bought WiiU when there was talk about the new zelda game being made

@Chippies SEGA stopped focusing on hardware and look where that got them.

i have nothing against lore questions. I just have issues with questions that seem to imply speculation rather than facts.

and then it wasn't released for years and years and now we got it on Switch

@Yuuki Then again they played a very bad hand with their hardware cough cough Saturn

10:24 PM
@quartata One could argue that was the case with Wii U.

@Chippies And I think their strat now might be "satisfy people who have literally been waiting years for new zelda, and then have a much more holidays ready library by holidays" maybe
But that's just speculation

@Yuuki they'd do better if they had any really good 1st party titles

I do believe they wanted to get it out as fast as possible so they could stop delaying zelda

SEGA is just a publisher these days, because Sonic was their biggest hit and it didn't age well

@Unionhawk It helps that it offloads some of the demand so the holiday season isn't as strenuous on supply.

10:26 PM
Nintendo could do so much better if they were a bit more modern thinking

Sonic Adventure 2 is my jam how dare you
@Yuuki yes

if I could stream PC games to Switch, I wouldn't even care for lack of games on it

@Chippies If Nintendo goes the way of Ubisoft or EA, I'm blaming you.

I'm very impressed the Switch controllers work with PC, but only over Bluetooth and that's a first
Nintendo is missing out on potential markets by handicapping themselves

If the reason they bring back F-Zero is because they start thinking more "modern" and just churn year after year of samey racer to make money, then I'll hate you forever.

10:27 PM
@Yuuki that's not what I mean by modern
and when I say they're not modern thinking, I'm talking mostly about hardware
their games are fine, it's the hardware I have issue with

@Yuuki Incidentally this is why f zero hasn't returned

@Unionhawk Yeah, I completely understand why Nintendo has no appetite to make a new F-Zero.

Nintendo makes tons of accessories that are more expensive than any other console accessories and you can't even use them for anything other than their own current generation console

(Incidentally, I hate that this is probably the same reason why the Paper Mario series has gone down the toilet)

@Yuuki yep
In other more @TimStone related news
I wish I had enough for a multicrew capable ship but I probably don't

10:37 PM
@Unionhawk Oh my
It really will be Eve Online but with gameplay

Q: Where does this question fail?

Fredy31Where does Breath of the Wild take place in the Zelda Timeline I really don't get where this question fails, but I'm taking in downvotes since I posted it. I posted it before release, and then I understand I might have jumped the gun. Nobody could have the answer I was looking for because the g...

Wait maybe I'm confusing Elite with Star Citizen again...

@Unionhawk I'm up for being navigation officer on your multicrew ship.

@Yuuki True but the Saturn was an unusual shitshow. I mean, they released the Saturn without any games and then immediately starting hyping the Dreamcast....??
Anyone who was going to buy a Saturn either bought a Playstation or waited for the Dreamcast
Also technologically the Saturn was weak. I mean, the N64 was cartridge based too but it had freaking SGI superpowers
No one could touch SGI's graphics technologies then

> I for one never wear pants at home. What would be the point of having a home if you go around wearing pants willy nilly.
@quartata And now we're back to using cartridges :D

10:51 PM
@Yuuki Yes, funny how that worked out
The only real problem with cartridges was space.
(and price)
but both have gotten better I think

@quartata Dreamcast however was far ahead of everything else. Too bad the PS2 was released around the same time and had better game line-up. If Nintendo had such lack of games back in those days, I doubt they would have survived either

@Chippies Yeah the Dreamcast was awesome.
But Sega's poor handling of the Saturn alienated third party devs methinks
Nintendo managed to survive until the Wii because of its first party games for sure
Sega had good first party games too but it wasn't enough

@quartata These days though they release their hardware with hardly any games and that wouldn't have worked back in the day
they sell their consoles mainly on the promise that there will be more games Soon™

> Nintendo 64
Japanese launch: June 23, 1996
Pilotwings 64
Saikyō Habu Shōgi
Super Mario 64
U.S. launch: September 29, 1996
Pilotwings 64
Super Mario 64
If anything, every Nintendo launch has been better than the N64 launch.

@Yuuki well, Super Mario 64 in itself was a console seller. How long did it take for more games to be released though?

10:58 PM
SNES only had five launch titles: SMW, Pilotwings, F-Zero, and two third party ones I can't remember
People seem to forget that tbh. Most Nintendo consoles don't have a lot of launch titles.
The Gamecube was the big exception

@Chippies Replace "Super Mario 64" with "Breath of the Wild" and you have the Switch.

Yeah, SM64 was definitely a console seller
I mean it was crazy good. People forget that SM64 was really unusual for its time. No one could figure out how to do a 3D platformer right
Look at Bubsy

@Yuuki after a whole generation of hardware with hardly any 1st party titles, I wouldn't expect any less though

We don't talk about that one

inb4 there were plenty of 1st party titles on WiiU
none that I cared for though
Sorry not sorry™

11:01 PM
I don't know anything about the Wii U but Splatoon looked really nice. That was the only serious tempter for me.
All the other games either came out for the 3DS or just weren't appealing.

I'm looking through historical launch titles and, honestly, none of them really stand out for me other than Halo. Yeah, you have big names every now and then on Playstation and Xbox but those are always largely by-the-numbers sequels to long franchises (Halo on the Xbox being the one exception I've seen).

anyways, the best thing about the WiiU was that I get to trade it in and I can get Switch for free (if EB Games gets any to come in before April) or for very little money (if they don't)

Nice.
Oh huh, the Wii had more launch titles than I thought.

None of these games seem appealing to me.
I imagine the sports games might have appealed to others though.

Perfect Dark Zero? Quake 4?
I mean granted Quake 4 sucked but I mean
It's got Quake in the name, that's somewhat appealing

11:04 PM
I don't think anyone considered any of these console sellers.

True.

Xbox 360 probably got launch sales because people were expecting Halo 3.

Halo was definitely the seller for the Xbox

(the problem with the new Xbox being the Xbox One is when I say Xbox 1 it's ambiguous now)

11:05 PM
@Yuuki some of those games were pretty popular though. While not console sellers by themselves, the amount of good games available added up to it

@Yuuki ew. those are pretty meh
CoD3 I guess?
The sports games were probably the main sellers actually. People really like those, it was what kept the Dreamcast afloat for so long
(I mean aside from Sonic Adventure)

PS4 shows a much stronger launch line-up than anything on this page.

Q: Enable Nvidia Dynamic Super Resolution on non-native resolution?

surjikalI use a projector (Epson 2040) as my main gaming display. The native resolution is 1080p@60hz. By enabling the projector's 3D mode, and disabling 3D vision, I can also run games at 720p@120Hz. I'd like to use DSR when I play at 720p. Is there a way to enable it for non-native resolutions? Can I...

@quartata Sonic Adventure was great, especially the 2nd one
although the Chao Garden was the main attraction and the Adventure was just a bonus

But I don't think any of the big draws are exclusives.

11:08 PM
@Yuuki but that might be enough to pull the trigger
right now with the Switch, for example, if you don't care for Zelda, there's nothing else on the market worth purchasing the console

@Chippies I don't know if it's part of Nintendo's strategy, but I can see that it's actually a good thing.

my biggest issue with Switch is all the missed potential due to how little it does

@Chippies Shovel Knight doesn't appeal?

it's a gaming tablet with nothing else, right now

I mean sure you can get it elsewhere
But I hate playing those kind of games on PC

11:10 PM
@quartata I could get it on PC for less and wouldn't have to buy a whole console for it

@Chippies The thing is, you're seeing right now as the big launch. And I don't see it that way.

especially since my Gamecube controller broke a while back and I don't have anything else I can use with my PC

@Yuuki I'm mainly bitter about having bought the WiiU with the idea that we will have the console when the zelda is released and that didn't happen for too long

@Chippies That describes like all of the Xbox and post-PS2 launch days on this page.

and zelda got released on Switch as well, making the WiiU version inferior

11:11 PM
I wish the Switch had 3DS backwards compatibility. I would gladly sell mine and buy a Switch right away if that was the case
My 3DS is starting to age. I'm kind of hard on my portable consoles (my poor GBA especially)

@Chippies I'm pissed about the Wii U too, but I seriously don't get this sentiment that Nintendo should close up shop and just sell games as third-party to Microsoft and Sony. I'm not saying that's your sentiment, but I'm seeing that in a lot of places now.
It hasn't happened often, but the few companies I know of that abandoned hardware to focus on software are not in a good place right now (Atari and SEGA).

@Yuuki don't sell to MS or Sony, but expand to PC maybe? Or at the very least stop locking down their controllers
as I said earlier - if they made it possible to stream from PC to Switch, it would be a console seller in itself
if I buy an Xbox, I can use their controllers on PC
if I buy a PS4, I can use their controllers on PC
if I buy any Nintendo console, I'm stuck with their expensive controllers only able to play their own games on their own consoles
and not even cross-gen

I just had a super sobering thought: if N64 titles ended up on the Wii virtual console, Wii titles could end up on Switch virtual console

it makes buying their expensive controllers a difficult choice for someone who's primarily a PC gamer

Possible, but I think everyone wants GC Virtual Console before Wii Virtual Console.

11:18 PM
Imagine people talking about Brawl and Galaxy as old classics

also, selling the same VC games every generation again and again is just sad

@Chippies Well, the Switch controllers are two-fers as is, so you already have two controllers just by getting the console.

@Chipples My Gamecube controller worked great on my PC with an adapter. That was my primary gamepad

@Yuuki sort of, but I doubt it would be any good for any AAA title 2player mode (Fire Emblem Warriors comes to mind)

The Switch controller reminds me of the paddles on home Pong consoles
I hope I'm not alone in that

11:20 PM
Hyrule Warriors was the reason we bought a WiiU Pro controller. Was also the only game we ever used it for
on the other hand, I own a PS4 controller, but no PS4
if I did own a PS4, I'd buy a 2nd controller, because even if I hardly ever used it on the console, I could still get some use out of it on PC

Q: Missing Minecraft world

Illeloria GamingI was playing Minecraft, when my computer crashed. After turning back on my computer, I checked Minecraft to see if I lost any of my progress, when I couldn't find my world! All of my other worlds were there, but not the one I was playing on. I checked my Minecraft saves files, and the world file...

If you're on the fence about the Switch or even on the complete other side, I'd wait until the holiday season before making any definite evaluations on the Switch launch.

@Yuuki I'm not on the fence though, only because of the great EB Games deal

I see March as more of a soft launch to also mitigate some of their "classic Nintendo" stock issues.

without the deal though, I wasn't even considering getting it until at least a good bundle or major price drop

11:23 PM
@Chippies On the fence about how good the Switch launch is, not on the fence about getting a Switch.

Actually IIRC the N64 and Gamecube controllers are backwards compatible, just different size plugs. I should try one of my N64 controllers with my adapter...

@Yuuki ah, well, doesn't really bother me in the grand scheme of things tbh, it's just that somehow Nintendo consoles get in my sight more than any others, because my wife is a Nintendo-nerd, so it's the only brand of consoles we actually are interested in owning
and as a PC gamer, I'm pretty critical over consoles...
once you get used to certain things, it's hard to give them up, while paying extra for doing so
but anyways, I don't think there's much of an argument against the fact that besides Zelda, Switch has a pretty dead line-up right now
Has Been Heroes looks fun though
and it's not overly expensive either, might be something I'll get once I have the Switch

That's one of the reasons I don't like the Xbox One (re paying extra). They're basically Windows 10 PCs at this point
There is such a thing as devices being too consistent and compatible

@quartata Xbox One is a multimedia device though and they're doing some things a lot better than Nintendo is
but for a PC gamer, both Xbox and PS4 aren't worth the money, besides the exclusives, imho
at least Nintendo offers something different

user15026
I am not opposed to the idea of the Switch, I love my Nintendo handhelds (and yes I will likely be one of those weirdos who uses it almost entirely as a handheld) just so far there aren't games for it I want to play

11:29 PM
That's what my RPi is for plus they've integrated a lot of those multimedia things into Windows

@Ash I'll be using it primarily handheld as well, so you're not the only one :P
I'll be extra weird and hardly ever, if at all, use it on the go
although we will probably take it on our trip to Europe (one of the reasons why we want the Switch)

Yeah the Switch's portability is very appealing.

user15026
@Chippies I'm the same (although I do play my 3DS on longer bus rides like the hour and a half to Toronto, but not really in my day to day) - I just like handhelds. I suck at remembering to play console stuff

user15026
(My living room also isn't really set up well for console play with where all the furniture bits are, but it's small enough that rearranging it doesn't really work.)

How is it as a pure handheld? I worried it might be a bit bulky.

11:34 PM
@Ash I don't have a TV in my PC room and I don't like being away from the PC when gaming :P Our TV is only 39", so with the distance I sit from it, it's not even any better experience than using the handheld screen

user15026
@quartata This concerns me as well, I think I need to see one in the wild because I keep feeling like it will be too big

@quartata it's much smaller than the WiiU gamepad
it's not small by any means, but it's pretty portable looking

@Chippies Poor comparison since I've never touched one

you'll need a purse or something though, as I doubt it will fit in your pocket

user15026
@Chippies Okay, that gives me a sense of scale. It should fit in my purse, which is really what I wanted to make sure :)

11:36 PM
@quartata about the size of ipad mini + controllers?

user15026
(I've stopped carrying a messsenger bag and now have what is considered a proper purse so space is sometimes at a premium)

Hmm all right. Definitely not Game Boy size...
But I carry around my tablet a lot so

@quartata it's a hybrid home console / portable, so, no, not really gameboy size :P

I'd probably be using it mostly as a home console anyways.

Switch with some sort of iPhone on top
ah, here we go:
switch with 3ds XL next to it

11:39 PM
Tough to tell without actually seeing it but it actually looks like the same size as the Game Gear without the controllers
I don't have a 3DS XL :P

Q: What are the possible 'Random Boss' encounters and is there a reliable way to trigger them?

Fredy31Sometimes, you get a 'Random Boss Encounter'... Theres a big HP bar on top of the screen, but you are in the middle of the open world. What are the possibilities for these random boss encounters, and is there a reliable way to trigger them? If there isn't, what could be the factors that do spaw...

Q: What determines the frequency (and type) of acquiring special items?

Cara WogslandThe special items that were added with the gen 2 Pokemon are really hard to get. I have hit hundreds of Pokestops and have only gotten a total of 3 special items, and a max of 2 at a time. I used the metal coat and then a few days later I got metal coat again. I also have 1 dragon scale. My hus...

the tablet portion of the Switch (the screen) seems to be roughly the same size as the 3DS XL when closed

user15026
@Chippies Oh, perfect, it will fit nicely in my bag then

@Ash it's a bit longer with the controllers though, keep that in mind
although if it comes to it, you could just pull them off while you store it in purse

Controllers can be detached yeah

user15026
11:41 PM
@Chippies Yeah, exactly

user15026
I'd definitely have to get some sort of case thing for it though

user15026
(that's why I like the 3DS because it closes so it protects itself)

My main other fear is that the controllers might detach during handheld use

anyways, I needed to have a nap before work 2 hours ago, but then Bridge started talking to me and, y'know, priorities...
@quartata there's a button on the back that controls the uhh thingy to detach
they shouldn't come off unless the button is held down
unless you have really worn the controllers down

user15026
@Chippies Go nap!

11:44 PM
@Ash finally, someone with more sense than me! Thank you! :P ttyl

@Chippies I guess my viewpoint is the same, it's just that I'm less angry at Nintendo because Microsoft and Sony are worse or the same about it and at least Nintendo has fun first-party games.
Huh, so that's why I haven't been able to gather Hylian Rice. It drops occasionally from cutting grass.

Q: How to get Monster Bone L in Mh3u

McPigI have battled many large monsters but I can never seem to get a Monster bone L. Please help. I'm not sure how to get them so please answer this question.

And you haven't been cutting down tons of tall grass naturally? What kind of Zelda game is this

@quartata Well, I knew ahead of time that rupees and arrows and bombs no longer drop from grass.
