Q: Why am I approving Tag Edits for higher rep users?

KaizerwolfI just went through approving tag edits for Timmy Jim, a user outclassing my rep by 10K+. Is this normal function for the website? I've just never encountered it before, though I only did recently receive the ability to approve/deny tag edits.

@MadMAxJr Was just about to mention that. Is he trying to tell us something? Or is he just an idiot?

Maybe this is his way of expressing internal screaming at all times.

@Fluttershy Maybe both: he's trying to telling us that he's an idiot.
Star Wars and Indiana Jones are more "adventure" movies. And I don't consider The Dark Knight an action movie either.

Q: Which class or classes are the most self-sufficient?

EllesedilI'm interested in giving Black Desert Online a try, but since I don't really have anyone I'm playing with, I'll probably be going solo for most things and grouping up only occasionally. Because of this, I'll need a class that has a solid kit for being self-sufficient with minimal investment in ma...

Q: Does Odion's "Chain Reaction" Skill count as Effect Damage?

ThunderforgeOdion has the "Chain Reaction" skill that has the following description: Inflict 200 points of damage to your opponent's Life every time you activate a Trap Card. Is this considered Effect Damage? Can I use it to help complete the missions that require dealing X amount of Effect Damage?

@Yuuki But the genre is "Action-Adventure"

@MBraedley Is though? I don't see the genre listing on the image and the original post said "Best Action Movie".

@Yuuki Well then the original post is wrong. Obviously.
(Mind you, they also have Inception, which IMHO is not an action-adventure movie, it's a heist movie.)

7:44 PM
Yeah, but it's not a semi-finalist.
The fact that John Wick got beat by Indiana Jones in "best action movie" is a bit weird. I mean, I'm not saying John Wick is a better movie than Raiders of the Lost Ark, but it's like saying Lord of the Rings is a better sci-fi movie than Plan 9 From Outer Space.
Like hwat?

Movie genres are wonky.
Action and adventure tend to go hand-in-hand.
To be fair, though, Lord of the Rings is a better sci-fi movie than Plan 9 From Outer Space.

How? What about Lord of the Rings is anything close to sci-fi?
Yes, Plan 9 From Outer Space is a terrible movie and objectively worse than any Lord of the Rings movie (possibly worse than any Hobbit movie) but it's also the only sci-fi movie of the two.

I stand by what I said.

8:09 PM
@quartata are we there yet?

Well, 77 now.

@Chippies Each day of this administration goes by, more and more I think about The Incredibles: "We're dead! We're dead! We survived but we're deeeaaaad!"

oh wow
Helen LeBohen Carter as the Doctor
:O

@djsmiley2k ... Do you mean Helena Bonham Carter?

yewah her
tho the one who played the tardis would be good too

@Avery the newest stable drivers are the newest ones that worked for you. There have been many cases where the newest drivers mess everything up, although I can only speak for Windows. I would recommend reverting to an earlier driver version that you knew worked for you before rushing to irreversible conclusions :P

looking at that screenshot
it looks like... familuar
something about the icons being drawn directly onto the root window, but the text isn't, so it screws up while trying to render.

8:21 PM
@Chippies 1) I'm on a laptop so can't really swap anything, so no actions to be taken after a conclusion, maybe just changing main GPU to my CPU's onboard GPU. 2) I have no idea how to revert drivers on linux.

@Avery idk how you install drivers on linux, but apt-get allows you to get specific version, so there should be a way

I use the driver manager SSM for KDE
SSM = system settings module. Nothing too cool or noteworthy.

run away from kde
D:
also run away from debian if you want anything remotely 'released this century'

@djsmiley2k kde plasma is fairly new
tfw you're looking for better portable graphics but accidentally stumble upon berkeley patients group's cannabis dispensary

8:31 PM
@djsmiley2k and it's actually looking MUCH better than anything I tried
gnome, mate, lxde, fxde(? forgot the name), unity, budgie. And KDE Plasma was a clear winner.

So I'm in the process of (potentially) transitioning from Kodi to Plex. Does anyone pay for Plex Pass, and is it worth it?

@Unionhawk I don't even know what you need to do in order to get it

Never fear for I have returned!

@Avery That's what I thought but I just looked it up and KDE 4 is from 2008
I miss KDE 3

8:47 PM
I DON TMISS KDE 3 AT ALL

How

(I used it on a weird turkish distro at all for years)

KDE 3 was the bomb and KOffice is still way better than LibreOffice

(it was hell. HELL I tell ya)
it had its own package manager
and repos were tiny
couldn't do anything

@badp I was able to see it by long pressing home

8:49 PM
That sounds like more a problem with the distro and not KDE 3.

@quartata yes, exactly. but kde 3 reminds me of that distro.

@Avery That's a shame
KDE 3 reminds me of happy sunshine and lollipops

Q: Is there any way to tell what time it is?

Timmy JimThe reason I ask is because at nighttime, it's pitch black. I don't like using night vision very much as it can be too bright if you accidentally look at lights. Can you check what time it is in the game? I'd rather start and do certain missions in the light of day so that I'm not restricted ...

@badp also this is on Nexus 6P running Android 7.1.2 Beta (I think it's still beta) but I think it should have come as a Google play services update

8:54 PM
Android 7 is a thing?
I'm still on 4.4. I'm probably one of those people app developers hate

@quartata What are you doing on a phone OS that hasn't been updated in 2.5 years?

@MBraedley Probably because carrier.

Lollipop killed my poor tablet's battery, so I just stuck with Kitkat.

Probably using a... Galaxy S4?

Was it really 2.5 years?

8:56 PM
Android 4.4–4.4.4 "KitKat" is a version of the Android mobile operating system developed by Google, spanning versions between 4.4 and 4.4.4. Unveiled on September 3, 2013, KitKat focused primarily on optimizing the operating system for improved performance on entry-level devices with limited resources. == History == Android 4.4 "KitKat" was officially announced on September 3, 2013. The release was internally codenamed "Key Lime Pie"; John Lagerling, director of Android global partnerships, and his team, decided to drop the name, arguing that "very few people actually know the taste of a key lime...

Posting questions on StackOverflow sometimes feels like US politics. Try as I might, I'm not sure my contributions count for anything.

@GnomeSlice I had forgotten how much fun Ascendant is

Latest release 4.4.4 (KTU84Q) / July 15, 2014; 2 years ago

@quartata well we have test kits and official backwards compatibility and support to as low as api level 19 (which is 4.4, kitkat, but it runs on lower ones too like I tested it on 4.0 and it runs well)
so I don't hate you

I'm not a fan of the increasing trend in mobile technologies to deprecate things after only a year or two

8:57 PM
I hate everyone under android 6, thanks to new permissions style :^)

I'm also annoyed that Chrome decides that a 6 month old browser is too old for Google Hangouts

android maybe
but browsers are TERRIBLE insecure and yeah you should update it

@Avery wasn't it introduced in 7?

I guess I'm just not really a rolling release person in general.
I just don't want my hardware to be on a rolling release...

@Unionhawk no, it was introduced in 6

8:59 PM
O

I doubt I could install 7 on my Nexus 7

@quartata A 6 month old browser is too old for the internet. Seriously, between old versions of Android and old versions of Chrome, I don't know how you're not pwnd daily.

I have a Nexus 10 that is very slowly trying to kill itself.
Battery life gets shorter and shorter.
2

Nexus 7 can get 6.0 Marshmallow

@Unionhawk Of course that doesn't mean it won't be crushing my Wifi signal and draining my battery in 45 minutes like Lollipop did
@MBraedley Eh.
I mean my browser supports ES6, that's cutting edge enough for me.

9:02 PM
Iirc lollipop fixed that issue in 4.4.4

Lollipop is 5

@MadMAxJr This was the 3 millionth post in the Bridge.

Very disappointing

r/YookaLaylee is honestly my most annoying subreddit. I consider unsubscribing so often

@BlueBarren Oh hey, is that out yet?
I was too busy waiting for Mother 4 to pay attention to it

@quartata April 11th on everything but the Switch

9:06 PM
Oh. Sweet.

It even has Mac and Linux support IIRC

Yeah, that's why I'm happy. I don't have a Switch so it's Linux or bust

You don't have Windows for gaming? Most Linux users I know do that
I'm lazy so I just use Windows for everything
no point in booting back and forth imo

@BlueBarren With the number of native Linux ports these days I haven't really bothered.

has the number really increased?

9:09 PM
I managed to get unaddicted from console gaming right around the time Steam for Linux came out, good timing
@BlueBarren It's pretty damn good. I haven't encountered any Windows-only game I've wanted to play

Man, I have Nier, Hitman, and Last Guardian all brand new to play this weekend.
And I'm still working on Horizon.

I mean before it was a rare oddity to have a Linux port

My Xbox friends and Nintendo Exclusives hold me back from playing exclusively on PC

especially with poor Loki gone, never forget

Also @quartata we must have different tastes because a lot of games I look at playing on PC don't have Linux support
(A fair amount of AAA games)

9:11 PM
Overwatch was probably the only exception but after seeing how it actually plays beyond the snippets of info during the closed beta I don't have any desire for it
It's weird because Blizzard is usually pretty good about at least porting to OS X.

Overwatch is on Mac

Crap, Torment came out. So I have that to-do on PC.

What?

I think all the games offered on Battle.net are on Mac

No it's not. It's the only exception, as far as I'm aware.

9:12 PM
Are you sure? When was the last time you checked?

Just now.
Because apparently using OpenGL is too much effort even though it's cross platform and arguably superior to DirectX

Didn't you hear? All the cool kids are on Vulkan now.

Yeah, or Vulkan.
Very little excuse these days IMO.

I had a macbook like a year ago and I feel like it was in there

@quartata As long as you're willing to use a game engine, etc. that works on Linux

9:15 PM
Maybe using Parallels? I've heard it works with that but not Wine

Graphics APIs aren't the only things dividing Windows and Linux development

@murgatroid99 True, porting existing game engines to OpenGL is hard. But most of the good ones have made the jump
And I mean if you're writing a new one from scratch (in the case of Overwatch) there's no point in not starting with OpenGL or Vulkan
unless you really really like DirectX for some reason

I still can't believe Doom on Vulkan. It runs on peak settings and I have a bloody Nvidia 960.

54 secs ago, by murgatroid99
Graphics APIs aren't the only things dividing Windows and Linux development

Eh. C++11 and beyond has made easier than ever before to make cross platform code in terms of working with the underlying native APIs and what not
The graphics API is most peoples' main excuse

C++11 is a programming language. It's not an OS compatibility layer

Whoa, that was a lot of posts
@murgatroid99 OK, *C++11 STL
That's semantic
The C++11 specification includes that stuff

@quartata That's also not an OS compatibility layer. It's mostly data structures

<thread> and <experimental/filesystem> have something to say about that
Even things like the new random number generators are nice. Before that we had to use arc4random on POSIX systems and whatever the Windows API thing is

9:21 PM
@quartata OK, those aren't in the STL. And that's still just compatibility for a small part of OS differences

And this is just from the C++ perspective. Making games in other languages is now actually feasible

How are you doing user input? How are you interacting with the network? How do you interact with the windowing system? Those are all questions that require separate work or libraries to answer

I mean 10-15 years ago it was C or bust. Java and C# games are common now.
@murgatroid99 Windowing system is the job of your graphics library

@quartata Not a low-level library like OpenGL
@quartata As long as you're willing to take a major performance hit

The OpenGL Utility Toolkit (GLUT) is a library of utilities for OpenGL programs, which primarily perform system-level I/O with the host operating system. Functions performed include window definition, window control, and monitoring of keyboard and mouse input. Routines for drawing a number of geometric primitives (both in solid and wireframe mode) are also provided, including cubes, spheres and the Utah teapot. GLUT also has some limited support for creating pop-up menus. GLUT was written by Mark J. Kilgard, author of OpenGL Programming for the X Window System and The Cg Tutorial: The Definitive...

9:22 PM
There's a performance cost to running bytecode in a virtual machine

Granted, GLUT isn't that great, but it's easy to work with and pretty well integrated into OpenGL.
@murgatroid99 It depends. JIT compilation in a good VM can be better in some cases.
It's not as bad as people make it out to be, even if it'll always be a small order of magnitude above native.
And with Go and Rust (which are not ideal for games yet but I think they could be) we're seeing an emergence of high-level native compilation languages which is great

But, with emerging languages, you're back to the state of either having less library support, or hooking into C/C++ libraries and losing some of the advantages of those languages

Rust has Mozilla's backing so I'm pretty sure it'll turn into a reasonably mature language soon -- otherwise they couldn't use it in Firefox. If they're going to use it in Firefox that also guarantees some level of graphics capabilities in the standard library

@Yuuki Use a newer version of Node (or at least npm). It will try to do a flatter node_modules installation. Though I'm not sure if that works on windows

I'm not saying now obviously
Very new languages
But I'm describing the overall trend of cross-platform

9:28 PM
@murgatroid99 Yeah, but now I can't delete one of the folders because of access permissions.
:|

I'm trying to figure out how to delete this question. Does anyone know how? gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/287020/…

@TheGreatDuck You don't have a "delete" link under the question text?

I also think you overestimate how dependent some games are on native APIs. Source, for instance, has almost no direct reliance on any POSIX or Windows things outside of rendering. They have their own STL and everything (tier0, tier1, tier2)

looking for it

It should be next to 'flag'

9:29 PM
@quartata They do networking, right? That involves specifically POSIX or specifically Windows stuff at some point

Yes but they have their own abstraction layer on that

Thanks

That was poor wording on my part sorry

But the abstraction layer is part of Source, right?

Anyways they've already been reinventing the wheel is the point

9:30 PM
So the networking stuff is still part of Source

@TheGreatDuck Bear in my that I am 20k, so it might not be visible to you (though it should since it's your question with no answers on it):

It was recommended to me that since it was marked as duplicate that I should delete it. Weird though. I didn't think people could delete closed posts...?

Obviously they're going to have abstractions over it. But at some point, somebody has to write the code that interacts with POSIX file descriptors or Windows SOCKETs

i found it
what is the policy for duplicates here anyway? What counts as a 'duplicate'

@TheGreatDuck It's the other way around, kind of. Deleting closed posts is fine. It's when a post is answered that we don't want you to delete it

9:32 PM
oh
well on other sites I wasn't able to even though the person who wrote it wrote absolute gibberish.

@TheGreatDuck You can't delete other people's posts ever until you have 20K rep

@murgatroid99 I guess my point isn't that clear which is that in these big game engines they had been making the kind of abstractions they need to port it to OS X and Linux sanely before any of this

oh
:p
@murgatroid99 you're a moderator, right?

And with new engines we have all this nice technology that makes it even easier

@TheGreatDuck Not on this site, but yes

9:34 PM
oh

FWIW Valve didn't do any of this because of porting, they just wanted a better performing STL since back then C++'s sucked

I was trying to figure out how similar two questions have to be to be considered duplicates. Being about the same game counts as a duplicate, right?

@quartata Sure, if you want to use Source or Unity or whatever, you can easily do cross-platform stuff. But the engine you're already using might not have that

Tier0 kind of came with that for demo playback which is at a very low level of the engine architecture
@murgatroid99 Sure, less common engines might not have that kind of portability but ehhh

Especially if there are only 1 or 2 questions, right?

9:36 PM
@quartata CRYENGINE, for example, only appears to work on a narrow set of Linux distros

The TL;DR is that old engines are in a good position for portability and when making new engines you have a bevy of new shiny toys to allow for portability as long as you do proper design choices
@murgatroid99 That's a notable exception, although they've gotten significantly better.
I managed to compile CE5 recently
although it doesn't like my integrated graphics :P

@TheGreatDuck when you can answer both questions with the same answer, that's a good indicator of a duplicate

@Chippies what if they are /just/ about the same game and about totally different features. Is that not reason to consider a duplicate and a reason to merge the two questions into something along the lines of "questions about game X"

@quartata Here's another example: it looks like Diablo 3 doesn't work on Linux without Windows compatibility stuff. This is probably because Blizzard uses an in-house engine that they've developed over time, and don't want to switch t oanother one

9:40 PM
@Yuuki there's an answer on Arqade mentioning this
@TheGreatDuck of course it's not duplicate then, because then we'd have maybe a hundred questions on Arqade total

@murgatroid99 Works on OS X though, right?
D2 does too.

@TheGreatDuck we also don't like multiple questions inside one post, so merging is a no-no

yeah but if there only 2 questions total about the game then what is the point of having them seperated?
ok so then one question should just be removed, right?

@TheGreatDuck If they're different questions, they should be separate

so keep one and delete the other?

9:42 PM
OS X is a good step. I don't expect every AAA to have Linux compat simply because it's not usually a big enough market to warrant even a couple days worth of dev
OS X is though.

@TheGreatDuck because if you can answer one question, but not the other one, you can't post an answer. If you can answer the other question, but not the first one, you can't answer. If you do post those answers, how do you upvote the "better" answer?
you can't

I really only take offense at new entirely 100% Windows only games. That's just lazy, at this point.

which is why we only do 1 question per post

ok, so then if one was marked as a duplicate of the other but they aren't duplicates of each other, what does one do?

(I include the Xbox in this since it's the same stuff)

9:43 PM
just delete the supposed duplicate, right?

@quartata Why not apply the exact same logic for Linux to other non-Windows platforms?

@TheGreatDuck if one is marked as duplicate of the other, they're both duplicates. The older question generally won't be marked as duplicate though

Windows is the primary market for PC games

@Chippies they are not duplicates

@murgatroid99 Because Linux isn't going to make them money even if it's easy to port, OS X will

9:44 PM
@TheGreatDuck you'll have to give me an example here

Now to be fair I do think the Linux market is increasing
But not enough for the really big companies

@quartata So, basically, it's more of a cost-benefit analysis

it's a hypothetical situation not an actual circumstance

@murgatroid99 Yeah, that's how AAA games usually end up on this kind of thing
Indie games need every ounce of appeal they can get though which is why they're usually on more platforms

@quartata So, to summarize, companies are lazy if they do a cost-benefit analysis and decide it's not worth the cost to make their games on a non-windows platform

Q: Is there a way to see the level 40 dialog again?

RapitorWhen your hero reaches level 40, you could be treated to a special dialog session, is there a way to view this again?

depends on the game

@murgatroid99 No, they're lazy if they do a cost-benefit analysis and decide it could be worth the cost to make their games on OS X but don't
Blizzard obviously knows this since they've ported all their other games
According to what they've said it's a pure technological standpoint thing

@quartata Why do you think they're deciding that it's worth the cost?

@quartata I'm not even sure if Blizzard is in it for the money anymore. They've made so much off of WoW, they can easily afford not making as much

@murgatroid99 Because Blizzard is friggin' massive and they're not going to do something that isn't worth the cost
At least I'd hope
I mean I can't really guess what the deal with Overwatch is
But they ported it to PS4 which requires OpenGL
So it's kind of weird

9:47 PM
@quartata like I said, Blizzard has made so much money, I don't think making more money is their primary goal

@Chippies Maybe.

@quartata I'm completely lost. You're saying that Blizzard does consider it worth the cost to port to Mac because they already port to Mac, and that therefore they're lazy for not porting games to Mac?

I can't imagine Diablo 3 making any money for them anymore, yet they're still pushing out major updates every couple months

@murgatroid99 Blizzard decided it was a good idea, whatever their reasoning was, to port their games to OS X. They didn't do it for Overwatch for "technical reasons" IIRC.

@quartata Maybe because it's a different game, and would have taken different work to port it

9:49 PM
@quartata I wish they'd port them to Linux
That's the only thing keeping me on Windows

@murgatroid99 But being their first FPS they're obviously starting from scratch. And as I've already said it's not that hard to make an engine cross platform nowadays if you design it right

@quartata What you said is that many engines are already cross platform. That's not the same as them being easy to make
I can tell you, cross-platform code is a pain in the ass

No, that's what I said about existing engines a couple minutes ago. 30 minutes ago was totally different
Long diatribes get confusing, sorry

pls stop, i only want to make a proof-of-concept. y u so mean, config errors?

I am concerned about whether or not this a duplicate question. I was told to delete it but I have yet to have it answered in any fashion gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/287020/…

9:52 PM
@Yuuki Is this Node?

@quartata Trying to use React (and by extension Babel).

@Yuuki Ow.

The only thing in common between it and this question is the game gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/286227/…

Can't say I recommend trying that

Yeah, well it's my current task.
Along with tearing my hair out.

9:54 PM
@TheGreatDuck while the question is different, it is still a duplicate. The answer in the other question already tells you the boss is unkillable without cheating

@Yuuki :(

That's not the boss!
That's a totally different enemy!

@TheGreatDuck It'll get roomba'd anyways, no need to delete it

@TheGreatDuck I missed that part. Hmm

Yeah, I'm not actually sure that question is a duplicate at all

9:57 PM
But it's about the same game
and the only other question about the game

@TheGreatDuck there's thousands of questions about Minecraft, that in itself doesn't make them duplicates
honestly, I would argue that your question is not a duplicate

@TheGreatDuck This is simply not the criterion we use to decide whether a question is a duplicate

but beyond pointing it out here in the chat, I'm not motivated enough to actually argue

Oh wait, I forgot. Duplicates don't get roomba'd
I always wondered why. Signposts don't seem that valuable to me

9:58 PM
@quartata google searches

but it was marked as duplicate therefore it has to be right?

ehhh

duplicates just add more ways to find the answers
@TheGreatDuck 5 people agreed that it is a duplicate. That does not necessarily mean they were right. You can appeal it or post about it on meta

DAMMIT!!! god fucking DAMMIT!
sorry for the expletives

How do I appeal?
