I wanted to ask why newer games don't support older directx cards. I have 9800gt and I'd like to play some new stuff, but it officially doesn't run on it, but I bet there might be some ways

I just found out about a very crude way using dxcpl.exe (from windows sdk) to force software rendering

looks like it's hella slow but works, which kinda reignited hope

I am not very experienced with computers, and was wondering what Direct X actually does, on my PC. Why do various games request different versions? Should the latest version cover all of them, or do certain games only support specific versions?

best answer for your case is, gtx1080 is out, 9xx series cards will get cheaper. Grab a 9xx card (for ex 960, 970 etc)

You'll just run into all kinds of problems, a 9800 GT is ancient now. Many games now also require 64bit. Even if you can manage to get a new game to run, the 9800 might just not have enough performance to do anything useful

If the developers decide not to support old DirectX versions, it usually means that almost all GPUs that are able to run the game support the new versions anyway. So in most cases if you don't meet the minimum DirectX version, it mostly means that your GPU is too weak anyway, and that is the reason the developers don't bother to support it

Newer DirectX versions are a different API. I don't actually know DirectX (I know some OpenGL), but as far as I understand it DirectX 9 and the later ones are seriously different and if you support both you need to do quite a bit of work twice

There's a lot of stuff you can keep a long time, GPUs are the part that is out of date the quickest. I still have an i2500k and upgrading now would be expensive and still not a huge upgrade. But upgrading the GPU from a 560 Ti was a huge boost in performance

Q: I got more flags/day. Is that because of the Marshal badge?

I just flagged my first answer after I got the Marshal badge, and I noticed that I have 62 flags remaining. This number is higher then I got previously, iirc. Is this because I got the Marshal badge and now am 'trusted'? (and yes, part of this question is just me being happy about my third gold ...
