@MartinSojka wait, didn't you just finish arguing that usage, not books, dictate how language works?
@badp Thus "official", not official.
I keep wanting to give Xenonauts a try, but from what I understand the AI still sucks.
I also like how the last "language reform" in Germany trying to prescribe the language ended up with everyone going "You know what? Screw you. From now on, we'll write however the hell we want to."
@Sterno Is it out yet? Or is it still one of those "Pre-order and gain access to the beta build" deals?
... including major newspapers simply choosing what their "default spelling" will be independently from each other.
14:08
@MartinSojka Is that really what happened? Everything I've seen written after the reform has used the reformed spellings. I'm not fluent in German, though.
@fbueckert No. Yes.
I preordered it a year ago
@StrixVaria Pretty much, yes. Read the wikipedia article if you like for details, but basically the result was that now there is way fewer discussions about what is right or wrong, and the "old" spellings (like "daß" instead of "dass") are simply listed alongside each other in dictionaries.
You also have the choice to activate either - or both - spellings in spell checkers.
oh joy
pardon me, my limited latin mind has trouble wrapping his mind around anglosaxons, spelling and the terrible relationship in between

Xenonauts beta plan. Basically, should be a playable game the same day XCOM releases (they hope)

argh
@badp Consider that the whole mess resulted in practical disappearance of German grammar Nazis ... No hard rules, no-one to try and prove their superiority by pointing out other's mistakes. Yay! :D
I am stuck :(
Now I have to use a scroll portal, walk to the entrance to the area and then through the first floor again, don't I :/
@MartinSojka The only thing that changed for us post-Mussolini, "grammar"-wise, is we stopped translating people's names to Italian

(I guess it beats "Alberto Unapietra.")
WTF are these answers not sorted by votes?

Oh. Apparently when I googled to there, it had "oldest" sort order. Weird
@badp If it's any consideration, you weren't the last ones. Iceland changed its rules in 1997 or so, so for example Emilíana Torrini's father had to change his name from "Salvatore Torrini" to "Davíð Eiríksson" ...
@badp Did you really call him that?
14:25
@MartinSojka um I'm not actually sure we forced people to change names
We just translated them, afaik
@StrixVaria Google doesn't offer instant gratification so I'll concede it's probably a rumour
That's kind of a relief, but I also kind of wanted to have an excuse to call him Albert Onestone.
@badp I would hope not; that would be a massive deal breaker. "You want me to change my name? Why? So it's in your language? What if I say no? Oh. Well, screw you, then! I'll go somewhere where I can keep my name!"
@fbueckert We're talking 1930s-1940s here, it was either the party's way or the train way
@badp Sounds like an awesome way to kill all innovation and culture.
@fbueckert or protect your nation's own. Perspectives
14:29
@StrixVaria Albert Singlestone would be more precise, I guess.
@badp If you alienate everyone that doesn't agree with you, all you'll have left is the same old people spitting out the same old tropes.
That culture will stagnate.
@fbueckert It so happens that the party really valued the same old tropes
@MartinSojka Wouldn't that be something like Einzigstein?
god this is one hell of a grind
@badp Sounds like a bunch of old guys that are afraid of change, and applying, "Get off my lawn, you whippersnapper!" to a national scale.
14:31
way worse than cataclysm
@fbueckert Dude, we're talking about Mussolini and Hitler. They're totally not about individual freedom.
Plurality of views is absolutely not on their agenda
@badp Touché.
In a couple of weeks Crash Course should hit on these topics, btw, given that this week's topic is WW1
@StrixVaria Not quite. "Ein-" in combination with people often has the connotation of "alone", "single" ("einsam" = "alone", "Einsiedler" (lit. "one-settler") = "hermit", and so on).
14:36
@Sterno ah, the idea that if everyone has a gun then everybody will behave - or be on the wrong side of a gun
@badp There are plenty of people I hope never have a gun. That said, I own several.
I know no one who owns a gun privately
I mean, in Italy
Heh. I got busted for gun smuggling once. :D
@badp At the least, the idiots who decide shooting someone is a valid response to being on their lawn would quickly thin out.
@MartinSojka Good to know! Thanks.
14:39
@fbueckert What about the relatives of the idiots who decide shooting someone is a valid response to being on their lawn?
To be fair, it was "just" an air pistol, and I was 16 so didn't get many problems because of it aside from a scare, but a friend of mine had to do community work after he loaned it out and shot some guy in the arse with it (which is why I got busted too).
Would they agree that shooting someone shooting somebody else as a response to being on their lawn would be something not shoot-worthy?
Ah well, the things you do when you are young and don't know how to avoid the law yet ... :D
The friend is a lawyer now, BTW.
@badp Now we're getting into the spiral of violence.
@MartinSojka Studied all the ways it's lawful to shoot a man in the arse?
14:45
@badp He's actually doing mostly IP law, but I thought it was a nice example of real-life irony.
On the other hand ... I have the suspicious feeling that only crazies become psychiatrists and only criminals become lawyers. :)

Q: How do I know if a particular skin is not going to always be available to buy?

EnderSome Champion skins in League of Legends are only available for a set time period, at which point they are removed from the store and become unavailable for purchase permanently. How does one know if a skin they are saving up for, or waiting to go on sale, will soon be gone?

I'm not sure how me linking of picture of Clint Eastwood being a grumpy old man in Gran Turino turned into a gun debate.
10 mins ago, by badp
@Sterno ah, the idea that if everyone has a gun then everybody will behave - or be on the wrong side of a gun
@fbueckert Right. I guess just "picture of a gun" was enough?
@Sterno Looks like
14:48
I haven't shot anyone yet for being on my lawn. I must be doing it wrong.
@Sterno You probably just lack practice.
Well, if my understanding of stereotypes is correct, as a gun owner I should constantly be leaving it out where children can get it, waving it around at dinner parties, and shooting at people who enter my property.
@Sterno You would very quickly have no children, no guests for your dinner parties, and no one crossing your lawn.
And my lawn would be pristine
(except for maybe the blood and corpses)
I think that's the "hillbilly" stereotype. At least for me, "gun owner" implies having the thing locked and not loaded until you intend to use it, not pointing it at anything you don't want killed/destroyed, and generally using it only for hunting and self-defence (which implies the other guys would have to be having their weapons out first), but I might be strange like that.
14:55
@Sterno On the plus side, you'd have absolutely gorgeous grass. Nothing does fertilizer better than dead bodies.
@fbueckert I thought the absolute best fertilizer was provided by volcano eruptions, not poor gun laws.
So, in chat, I've got my window a bit smaller than usual and your name shows up as "Fbuecker" now instead of "Fbueckert". It really enhances the previous name-mispronunciation effect!
@badp The ash, yes. The trick is to live close enough to maximize your ash accrual, but far enough away to avoid the pesky lava.
That wasn't actually meant to be a reply.
Lest you think I'm somehow mad about excellent fertilization tips!
... or maybe I was just around the Swiss too much (those guys have an army-issued SIG SG 550 assault rifle in nearly every house).
14:58
@fbueckert actually it's volcanic rock itself that provides the benefits
so you want to own the land where the pesky lava goes through, you just don't want to be there while it happens.
@badp Really? I thought ash was one of the better fertilizers just by itself.
Hence why farmers burn their stubble after harvest.
Ash is good for some soils, neutral for others, bad for some. For example, burning the vegetation leaves almost no ammonia in the soil, which needs to be supplanted by other means (artificial fertilizer or plants which bind nitrogen).
...Apparently, our province is now wasting money on "Spiritual healing". Because we're not wasting enough money on bureaucracy within our medical system.
@fbueckert what province is that?

Should I play on Ironman mode the first time through XCOM?
You'll likely make too many mistakes at first, so I'd suggest playing it to learn the rules of the game first, until you're reasonably secure you know what to do; then restarting and iron-manning it.
@MartinSojka This sounds like solid advice.
The intro level in the demo was really just too easy.
15:36
Playing blind will give you the fervor and urgency to perform better that you'll need to advance, rather than getting comfortable and slipping up as a result of overexpectance of your capabilities due to familiarity
Easy mode for learning the game, hard for actually playing it the first time through. :)
Learn the hard way and you won't have to learn the easy way
or just ragequit the game entirely
@badp This is really what I'm trying to avoid.
I like the idea of ironman, because I don't trust myself to accept losses.
What does ironman mean?
15:40
Never reload to an earlier save (unless the game crashes)
@MartinSojka so basically Alt-F4 like a madman every time things don't seem to go your way?
oh wait, turn-based combat. The game can just save every turn.
@badp "Killing the game process" breaks those rules - again, unless it crashes and you have no other choice.
@MartinSojka I remember doing that for Fire Emblem games.
@MartinSojka is it a conduct or an actual game option?
Playing the UFO series of games, though, I didn't. I wonder why.
15:43
There's an actual in-game option for Ironman in the new XCOM.
@badp Usually a self-imposed challenge, though some games (Nethack, Minecraft) have options to make it into a game rule.
They said that if you start doing really poorly, the game will ask you if you want to turn it off.
I guess my thought pattern is, getting comfortable with an easier difficulty and the convenience of the option give you a baseline to compare the harder task, which makes it feel more difficult
@GraceNote It still doesn't change the actual difficulty of the game
SUPERHARD on Alien Soldier isn't too bad on its own, but compared to the pielixir that is SUPEREASY, it just seems monumental and insurmountable
@badp The convenience of reloading remains. When you've got a taste, you reminisce and wish you could use it. Sometimes. Depending on the person.
15:45
@GraceNote Man, you've beaten I Wanna Be The Guy. That's awesome and all but it disqualifies you from ever making difficulty calls again, sorry :P
3
I Wanna Be The Guy is everything I don't like about games.
Fun to watch, though.
I can't remember how far I got through IWBTG, I think I made it to the castle.
IWBTG is more fun for the absurd deaths than the actual difficulty. Like random planes.
Speaking of which, I wonder how Brave Earth is doing.
@badp IWBTM is more an exercise in memorising the levels ... Now, if you want hard, try a world conquest in EU3 - as the Iroquois. On very hard difficulty.
15:56
Pretty much, yeah
Trial-and-error taken to the extreme, you might call it.
@MartinSojka I'm not really interested in just how hard a videogame can go :P
I've just barely taken down Vyrax with a 4 level advantage on Normal and I still consider myself adequately challenged
I mean, I had to reposition myself five times during the battle to avoid certain death! FIVE TIMES!!
Certain death of the instant sort or certain death of the finishing-off sort?
Hehe. Reminds me of the first time I did the level 85 Kartia instance in L2 with my tank. The first attempt took me nearly an hour (the instance has a 60 minutes timeout), with full GM buffs (there was an event).
of the watching my health bubble linearly but surely dry down very fast kind
The last one I did was in 25 minutes ... unbuffed (which means something like 1/5th of the firepower).
16:02
Finishing off sort, gotcha
Despite my having a skill that was supposed to shield me for more than twice my maximum health, this attack just ignored the shield
Forcefield is so awesomely overpowered. For 30 seconds it'll completely absorb the first 7,865 damage I get (when fully charged), with my max HP being 2,889
This is at level 10/15 btw
I guess its usefulness will start capping out at level 65 or 70 or whatnot, since the amount of damage absorbed doesn't scale with the player
(yes, its timeout is 8 seconds but casting it every 8 seconds doesn't give you time to charge it up)
anyone else having steam outage?

Mad ScientistUpgrading my shields seems to work pretty well against beam and laser weapons as well as against drones, but it doesn't do anything against enemy missiles. 16:30
@StrixVaria I'm likely going to play through without Ironman the first time, but I'll do a self-imposed version where I'm only allowed to create saves at the geoscape level (i.e., not turn by turn during combat to redo a turn if something goes wrong). If I really don't like how a map turned out, I'll have to redo the whole thing, assuming the RNG makes it come up the same way again.
I'm hoping that's enough to make me just accept the consequences of failure except in cases where it's either catastrophic, or caused by something like me having to abandon what I'm doing because the baby just woke up
Once I have a good feel for how the game works, though, I intend to go all out with actual Ironman mode. That seems like kind of the point of the game to me, long term. Otherwise it would be kind of like playing a roguelike where you just restore the game to a few turns back when you die. It'd get boring fast.
@Sterno Ironman is definitely the ultimate goal for me.
I'll probably do some sort of self-imposed Ironman to start off as well.
@Sterno Why does it have to count down so slowly?
@StrixVaria At least we're not in the UK

Q: How do I capture an alien in XCOM: Enemy Unknown?

ladenedgeI can't find any abilities that aren't related to either killing or healing. How can I capture an enemy alien?

@Lazers And begin the demo questions
18:25
@fbueckert Nope. F*ckbert 2 is dead. And I may never play the old one again!
To be fair, it wasn't entirely his fault. I misclicked trying to have him gun down the alien and he ran into a neighboring room instead
@Sterno Yeah, I did that a ton in the original, too.
It was so easy to misclick.
More stories of death?
@Lazers 3 upvotes already? To a terrible question?
Well, it's a fine question if it's really about the full game.
Just not answerable yet.
@Sterno If it's about the demo, like you said, you can't. It's a demo.
If it's about the full game, it gets closed.
I still don't know where I stand on the whole "close questions about games that aren't out yet" thing, when they're otherwise valid questions. I don't like people question camping. But I also find it ridiculous to close a question 2 days before game release just to see it asked again 2 days later.
(yes, I realize it's currently 13 days, but where exactly do you draw that line?)
It felt particularly odd when we closed a ME3 question 4 hours before the game release "because the game isn't out yet"
18:33
Where is the line drawn, indeed?
Pontificate less, decide more!
I say screw the line. Just decide if it's a valid question or not.
If we don't know enough about the game to even know that the question is valid, then close it
@Sterno That's the epitome of question camping, specifically for the contest.
@fbueckert Except the contest operates off a date range, so you actually hurt yourself in a contest by doing it (or at the least, get no benefit)
There's no other reason to ask a question before actually playing the game.
@fbueckert At least in the case of the ME3 question, the person was playing the game. Just not a legal copy :P
And I'm still firmly of the opinion that why someone asks a question should have no bearing on whether or not it's a valid question for the site.
18:37
@Sterno In this case, since the why includes "I got it early", that means that it should be disregarded and so we shouldn't care about the fact he has it. Thus making it still an early question.
I don't think the piracy point is relevant to its place in the site. Motivation of the asker is not important.
My issue is with the idea that a question can be invalid, and 2 hours later be valid. It just seems silly
Particularly when it's an otherwise good question.
@Sterno Either way, it's the same reason why we don't allow questions about games that aren't out yet; there's no way for us to corroborate and verify those answers.
SO GOOD
And there's no way to provide a definitive answer prior to actually playing the game.
18:39
@fbueckert Actually, often there is.
@Sterno How so?
But that's usually because the question is dumb
You can consider whether we can give "fair leniency" but then you have to decide what makes for fair leniency. Hours? Days? Short of just allowing them all, you need a metric. The current metric is currently set at "release time", but it's not something that is immobile. It can be moved.
Well, I know for instance that XCOM question, you'll want an alien containment facility to store them when you capture them alive, and one method of capturing them alive is with a stun rod
@Sterno In that case, the question should get downvoted into oblivion for not doing prior research.
@Sterno And you garnered this information from the XCOM articles, correct?
Articles, gameplay demos, previous games.
NOTE: I wouldn't actually leave that answer until I could 100% verify it
@fredley No, it didn't.
@Sterno But there's no way TO verify it prior to playing.
Need a timelock for questions
Lock it to auto-reopen on release date :)
@GnomeSlice But now we know because science
18:42
The line is able to be abolished, but then what determines the reasonability of asking early itself? Asking months in advance and staying open by virtue of being a valid question can be just as silly as asking hours in advance and getting shut down.
And what if those articles hadn't been written? What if it wasn't a remake of a 15-year old game?
@fredley I always figured it was because of the moisture in your breath.
@GnomeSlice science
@fbueckert I'm willing to be someone, with careful reading on the net, could build a pretty good and accurate answer to this question
@fbueckert But they were, and it is
> Do not blow into your Game Paks or systems. The moisture in your breath can corrode and contaminate the pin connectors.
Oh, hey, I was right.
18:43
@Sterno And you still can't verify exactly what needs to be done in order to capture an alien.
@GraceNote Agreed! That's why I started out saying I don't know where I stand. I'm really only arguing with @fbueckert since he's firmly on the "close it!" side :)
@Sterno Indeed I am! :)
@fredley Oh, hey, this is mental floss!
@fbueckert True. But I could play the game and still not know all the options available. Or I could not even play the game and just google around. It would just happen to be after release date when I do it. It's not like that doesn't account for a large percentage of the answers here
Honestly, overall I'm for closing the questions as long as we aren't stupid strict about it. ANd I guess where to draw the line will come down to votes with people
I do wish we had a mechanism in place to make sure they get reopened at the right time
On the plus side, for 80% of the questions, they're pretty dumb anyway, since it's hard to ask a good question about a game you've never played.
Speaking of Mental_Floss
18:46
That console vs PC one though, I can totally see someone wanting to know the answer to before release date, since it probably is going to inform their decision on which to purchase.
> A toe-tappin' animated musical starring Death, who sings about his very favorite last words from history.
@Sterno We're getting into pretty iffy territory with that one; it's still about a game that's not out, but, yes, it could affect which one to buy.
If you're that much on the fence, though, you're not going to be buying it Day 1 anyways; you'll be waiting to see which is the better version.
Someone would wait to buy XCOM? Crazy talk!
If I was on the fence as opposed to squarely in the "Not buying" category, I'd definitely wait until I had suitable information. Otherwise, why bother being on the fence?
Oh man, this video is so good.
18:49
@Sterno My point isn't specific to XCOM. :P
The whole thing is related to "Speculation of the future of the industry".
The reason we don't allow those is because we have no way of verifying or confirming the information.
All we have comes from the devs, themselves.
I think "speculation on future of the industry" is very different than "asking about a game that comes out in 3 days"
particularly with regards to console vs pc differences, which are likely publicized in some form
Unless you think the company will lie
But hell, I can write an answer and lie, too
What's amazing to me is that throughout this conversation, that question has still received no close votes.
@Sterno Technically, it's still a valid question, is it not? Even if it's about the demo.

@Sterno Why are you asking a question about a game that doesn't come out for three days?
@fbueckert Because I'm trying to decide between the PC or console version, and I want to play on release day, and I suck at googling!

Q: What happens at the end of NightHunter?

bharalOk, so this is a question brought to you by the wayback machine. There used to be a game on the Atari something-or-other that was called "NightHunter". In it, you played Dracula as he wandered around and kicked some ass murdering and looting through some town. You could turn into a giant bear-m...

And don't you dare quote "shopping advice" at me. :)
@Sterno Hadn't crossed my mind. whistle innocently
That sounds more like a lack of communication from the publisher's side; they really should be promoting and outlining which version is the definitive version.
@fbueckert That'll never happen. I mean, I agree, they should outline the differences. But calling one the "definitive" version? I can't see marketing doing that.
Unless it comes out way later and it's just to get another sales spike
@Sterno But that's the point; if the devs can't tell us the differences prior to release, how are we supposed to be able to?
@fbueckert Maybe they can. I don't know. I didn't actually ask the question, or research it
This is in danger of veering into that discussion about a source of info for D3 patch notes

@Sterno If they can, it should be on their website, and we downvote it into oblivion for not doing proper research.
