My lazer shirt arrived! :)

@UQAllulloo Just in time to honour the death of @Lazers.

I killed Lazers, sorry
I needed it's infinite improbability drive for my own experiments

user2334
@badp They don't: I could have just either taken a screenshot of my desktop and cropped to just the window, or drawn a box around the window while taking a screenshot. But Skitch and OS X both have a one-click-take-a-screenshot-of-a-window function that happens to also include the shadow. The shadow is the cost of being lazy

@MarkTrapp Yes, that's what I was wondering
Don't get me wrong, Ubuntu/Compiz/Unity/whatever does the same
(although the border isn't quite as wide)

user2334
They don't have to do it: it just looks pretty

4:13 PM
it's just... you could very well apply the shadow effect to the screenshot

"hey everybody we have shadows!!!!1111oneoneone"

alpha-channel-enabled PNGs are something that will just work nowadays if you're not stuck in 2001.

user2334
I'M SORRY I RUINED YOUR LIFE WITH MY FRIENDSHIP SCREENSHOT

@MarkTrapp I did just say Ubuntu does the same

Cue the Bridge drama.

4:14 PM
You didn't ruin anything, I'm just wondering aloud

You'll have to do a lot more than screenshot your BSD to ruin my life!

I want to see waterworks, people! C'mon!

I didn't even post that message as a reply to the screenshot, "prompting" you to reply.

@badp apple fan bois always jump to the defence though

From now on I'll either purposefully add a 500px shadow to my screenshots I post here out of spite or set the option to not include a screenshot/use transparency out of deference, I haven't decided yet

You will fail at being spiteful if you do that, just sayin'

4:18 PM
Oh man, Skitch won't let you freehand anything: it auto-corrects paths to not be awful. I've actually gotten multiple downvotes for that on MSO

how the hell do you "for her" bic pens?

user15026
By making them pastel coloured and slapping "for her" on the label.

@MarkTrapp Dunno, Paint for Win7 kind of does that too and I haven't received that kind of hate
(kind of)
> I don't know why they didn't put a clearer warning on the label, they really should have because if you are a boy and use this pen you put yourself at great risk. My little brother turned into a unicorn after I lent him one, and my friend told me that a boy in her class grew fairy wings in the middle of a test.
@pixel ^^^

oh, they contain hallucinogenics?

user2334
@badp It was at least a year ago, back when down voting people for not using freehand circles was still a thing

4:21 PM
@MarkTrapp You mean it isn't?!
Time to get votin'

user2334
I think the only MSO meme that still gets a free pass is the tag, and even that gets the virtual blank stare from time to time

people used to downvote for not using free hand circles?
big win for integrity

user2334
@pixel MSO used to be a less serious place to blow off steam until it became unsustainable and they created chat

@pixel MSO is a ... strange place.

It's not like this place is any less weird

user2334

Jeff Atwood on April 29, 2010

When people ask me what mistakes we made in building Stack Overflow, near the top of the list is not acknowledging the need for a meta-discussion site earlier. That is, a place for people to discuss Stack Overflow itself.

I resisted this for the longest time, relegating meta topics to UserVoice, because I didn’t see much value in meta-discussion. But then I finally bowed to community pressure and created meta.stackoverflow.com a little less than a year ago.

Owning our own meta, rather than outsourcing it, has been hugely productive in evolving the engine and the trilogy sites forward. The community was right, and I was so very, very wrong. …

realtime chat on the internet in groups has always been weird though

There are people with tons of rep on MSO that never (or rarely) set foot on any of the other sites. They are essentially experts and arbiters of how SE works.

Does "Do Not Close" in the new review system > close votes actually do anything?

@JasonBerkan Yeah, those people are crazy.

4:32 PM
@badp LOL

@pixel Misread it: it's not an answer. It answers a question that wasn't asked. Should just be deleted

user2334
Adds nothing to clarifying the question as a comment

In an effort to be super hip or something, my university is having a carnival during the first week of classes, which will feature....a poutine bar.

user15026
WHAT

@AshleyNunn That had better have the best spiked gravy ever.

@AshleyNunn Carnivals need to be delicious too.

user15026
@fbueckert Haha I know, right?

4:46 PM
@AshleyNunn Sounds good to me.

user15026
@TimStone Yeah, but poutine?

shrugs

@AshleyNunn Poutine is always delicious.

user15026
I mean I like poutine, don't get me wrong. Just seems like the most random thing ever.

user15026
@fbueckert Not true. McDonald's poutine was icky.

4:47 PM
It's just a heart attack that you haven't had yet.

@AshleyNunn Yes, fast food poutine is definitely not good.

@AshleyNunn ...I thought it was a given that McDonald's food, period, was icky.

user15026
@JasonBerkan This specific poutine bar is Harvey's sponsored, so I am not holding my breath.

user15026
@fbueckert Fair point.

badp has made a change to the feeds posted into this room

4:48 PM
@AshleyNunn I was imagining an upscale poutine bar, which would be awesome.

Let's see if this gets Lazers going

user15026
@JasonBerkan That would be awesome.

@badp Quick, someone post an ITG question and see how quickly it gets closed!

@JasonBerkan New York Fries makes some pretty decent poutines.

@fbueckert Really? I'll have to try that out.

4:51 PM
@JasonBerkan Just whatever you do, don't go to Smoke's Poutinerie.
It's poutine fast food; the first time I tried it, my fries were green.

user15026
@fbueckert Oh? One just opened near me, I was kinda excited about it.

@fbueckert Never heard of it.

@JasonBerkan It's a fast food chain that specializes in nothing but poutines.
But what happens when you serve fast food and pay your staff minimum wage?

@fbueckert You'd think they would make them better then. Ah - none near me.

GIGO is the operative term for it.

4:55 PM
Now I'm hungry.

I just looked up poutine and you are all disgusting.

@OrigamiRobot It's a Canadian thing.

@OrigamiRobot Have you tried it?

How else are we supposed to insulate ourselves from the bitter cold?

user15026
@OrigamiRobot Poutine is awesome, especially if you add vinegar

4:56 PM
@AshleyNunn robobarf

@OrigamiRobot I didn't realize robots had a stomach.
And seriously, though. Do you like fries and gravy?

French Fries? OK. Gravy? Still OK. Curd Cheese? Blegh

Poutine isn't gross, but I don't particularly like it.

Poutine is one of the things that keeps me in Canada.

@fbueckert I just threw up a thunderstorm.

4:59 PM
@OrigamiRobot Substitute real cheese for cheese curds. Still good.

Negative.

@OrigamiRobot You like fries and gravy, but add cheese to the mix and it's automatically barf city?
I don't buy it.

@fbueckert Cheese and gravy do not go together.

@OrigamiRobot You'd be surprised at how well they really DO go together.

Ugh
Granted, I am overly sensitive to cheese.

5:02 PM
@OrigamiRobot Yeah, you were saying.
...Dammit. Now I want a poutine.

shame you can't cancel flags

@pixel What did you misflag now?

the last thing I misflagged
blame @MarkTrapp

My mouth is like "Hell yea I want some cheese...wait, what is this with the cheese? YOU HAVE TAINTED THE CHEESE AND MUST BE PUNISHED!!!!"

;p

5:03 PM
@pixel blame @Wipqozn fixed

oops

user2334
@OrigamiRobot Especially when supposedly a sign of quality cheese curd is that it "squeaks"

@OrigamiRobot Cheese straight isn't bad at all. But it enhances damn near everything.
@MarkTrapp To be fair, I'm not a fan of squeaky cheese. Yes, that is a thing.

@fbueckert I love cheese, but it doesn't enhance anything for me.

user2334
@fbueckert there's a difference? The Wikipedia claims they are the same thing

5:05 PM
Cheese is good alone, on a grilled cheese sandwich, and in mac and cheese. Also pizza.
That's about it.

@OrigamiRobot I genuinely feel sorry for you. I add cheese to almost everything I eat.

@fbueckert If I did that, all I would taste is inferior cheese. Why wouldn't I just eat the cheese by itself?

user2334
Gas.

@MarkTrapp Huh. I figured cheese curds were, you know, curdled cheese. Shows what I know.

I am a robot.

5:07 PM
@OrigamiRobot You need better taste buds.
The older the cheese, the more I like it.

@fbueckert I think I might have too many taste buds.

And the more I want to add to whatever it is I'm making.

@fbueckert This is also true

@OrigamiRobot To be fair, my taste buds are somewhat strange, too.

user2334
@fbueckert Nah, it's a specific dairy process that somewhat resembles how they create mozzarella, although curdled milk does produce curd

5:08 PM
@fbueckert There's a point where taste is too damn strong.

@badp You live in Italy, the home of awesome cheese.

Wasn't that supposed to be France?

We don't get nearly as much great cheese in North America.

user15026
Oh man. Now I want cheese. And poutine.

@AshleyNunn Cheesed poutine.

5:09 PM
I'm just happy with Asiago, Parmigiano Reggiano and/or Grana Padano and the occasional Primosale/Branzi for more specific scenarios

@badp Not in my books. France is for snob cheese.

user15026
@fbueckert It disappoints me that I can't get awesome poutine locally.

@AshleyNunn Most restaurants that serve fries will have the ingredients to make poutine.

oh, and good ole Mozzarella. but that's a different whole world.

If you ask nicely, chances are good they can make you one much better than fast food junk.

user15026
5:10 PM
@fbueckert I am picky - I don't like poutines that use plain cheese

user15026
There is one place that makes pretty decent poutine, but they use a soft cheese instead of curds

Burrata is a fresh Italian cheese, made from mozzarella and cream. The outer shell is solid mozzarella while the inside contains both mozzarella and cream, giving it an unusual, soft texture. It is also defined by some sources as an outer shell of mozzarella filled with butter or a mixture of butter and sugar. It is usually served fresh, at room temperature. The name "burrata" means "buttered" in Italian. History Burrata is a typical product of the Murgie in Puglia, a region in the south of Italy. It is produced from cow's milk, rennet and cream. Burrata was probably first made around ...
^ this is like cheese bliss for me, but it's a local product that needs to be consumed fresh :(

@badp You know what we have here? Cheddar. Parmesan. And Mozarella. Everything else is a specialty cheese.

@fbueckert Well that's a very good start

user2334
@badp Ewwww. Cheese should not be runny unless it's been melted

user15026
5:12 PM
@badp That does sound like cheese bliss.

@badp That sounds like some pretty awesome cheese.

Screw it - I'm going for lunch.

I just finished some mac and cheese

@badp The only cheese I'd heard of from these is Asiago.
I'm no cheese connoisseur, but damn if I don't love me some cheese. I need to go buy some different flavors now.

@fbueckert Primosale is kinda like Asiago but older, more consistent and with whole grains of pepper in it
typical of Sicily
another great one is ricotta infornata, still from sicily, good both on pasta and by itself, but alas it also suffer from the problem of being both local and best fresh

5:15 PM
@badp Got any recommendations for sharp cheeses? Ones that I can, you know, actually GET here. :P

Branzi is an average cheese for an above-average recipe specific to Northern Italy.
@fbueckert I'm surprised you can get parmesan and mozzarella to begin with!
(but Primosale sounds like the kind of cheese that can make it to you.)

@badp I live in the middle of farming country. Milk is not a hard product to come buy at all.

@fbueckert eh... "Parmigiano" is called "Parmigiano" because it comes from Parma, Italy :P
It's quite possible that given the same input and the same process you get the same output but I'd have to taste it to know
At least in the EU it's a protected name, so either it's from that area around Parma or it needs a different name
(Same goes for the 'Grana Padano')

@badp If you want to come all this way just to taste cheeses, hell, I'd let you crash at my place.

Not really, but thanks for the offer!

5:21 PM
Yay, chat crashed!

@fbueckert It's an offer I'd love to reciprocate but can't :(

@badp Eh. I'm not much of a traveller, really. If anything, I like road tripping. Planes and me don't agree too much.

Hey all, I'd like some advice about how to best proceed with a question I'd like to ask.
Basically, I'm looking for an explanation of the effects on some of the new Diablo 3 1.0.4 patch legendaries, and I'm not sure if it justifies a "list" question
E.g. this weapon includes an effect that says "blood oozes from you". What does that mean?

Well...that's SORT of a lazers feed.

there are a bunch of other legendaries with similar stuff

5:29 PM
@Beofett If the list of effects is less than 50, it should be fine.
We mostly don't like list questions because the asker tends to make them too broad, resulting in an infinite list, or really REALLY large list.

@fbueckert Hrm. I suspect it is less than 50, but I haven't counted. Should it be phrased as "here are the effects?" or "what are all the effects?"

@Beofett What are the effects.

user2334
@Beofett It'd be much better if you just asked specific questions rather than trying to compile a list, however bounded. "What does the oozing blood effect do on the Blood-Magic Blade?" is a perfectly fine question.

user2334
We don't need to catalog every effect even if people don't care. Just ask about the one you want to know about

OnTheFritzWhen I try to run the Minecraft demo game on Ubuntu I get to a screen that says "Minecraft Updating" "Done loading" But it was never done loading. I am not sure if I am being impatient or there is something wrong because I have left the game to update and when I returned 15-20 min later nothin...

5:34 PM
@MarkTrapp I generally avoid list questions unless it is fundamental enough to qualify for a good use of CW (which is very rare, imo). But the alternative in this case is I'll probably be firing off multiple, very similar questions in a short period of time
which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Just grey enough that I thought asking for opinions would be a good preliminary :)

user2334
@Beofett Then space them out. What's the impetus for asking this? Are you trying to decide on a weapon, or are you just trolling through the legendary weapons list?

user2334
The problem with creating a list of legendary effects is that it is unbounded. There is no cap to the amount of effects Blizzard can come up with, and it's a breeding ground for low-rep users to add another thing to the list by adding a new answer.

@MarkTrapp I'm trying to decide on a weapon, so I'll only be focusing on weapons that might be a good fit for my class and playstyle (e.g. no mighty weapons, no fist weapons, etc.)
unfortunately, there's still a fair amount of vaguely interesting choices. "causes the ground to shudder when attacking". "allows you to fight through the pain when enemies hit you"

user2334
Then yeah, I would spread them out, and maybe do some preliminary research. Some effects might be easily answerable without having to ask a question on Arqade because they're already covered to death elsewhere

actually, its not that bad. I see maybe 4 that I'm interested in, and some that give enough of a hint that I don't need to worry about it (e.g. "slain enemies rest in pieces" is probably clear enough)

user2334

so, it turns out Lazers DOES work in the ticker

@badp Project Giana is the remake of The Great Giana Sisters, itself a kind-of clone of Super Mario Bros, though without the infringing parts which made the original get banned.
The Great Giana Sisters is a platform game developed by Time Warp Productions for the Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, MSX2, and Commodore 64. It was released in 1987 and published by Rainbow Arts. The Commodore 64 version was programmed by Armin Gessert. Graphics were designed by Manfred Trenz. History Rainbow Arts was forced to withdraw the game from sale almost as soon as it was released and cancel release of the otherwise completed ZX Spectrum version, under pressure from Nintendo's legal arm, because of the strong resemblance to Nintendo's Super Mario Brothers game. The cover of the C...

Are there any really ubiquitous sites that simply won't function without Java?
I am probably going to just disable browser Java altogether even if I do patch.

user2334
Not really. Apple stopped bundling Java with OS X and the only site that I got burned by was Wikipedia, which either requires Ogg support or Java support if you want to view/listen to their video/audio media

Sweet.

@StrixVaria Minecraft I imagine

Since Java seems to have vulnerabilities every other week, I'll probably stick to disabling it.

7:49 PM
@badp If you only play it on the website...

user2334
@badp Minecraft doesn't require the Java web plugin, unless you want to play the in-browser demo

@badp I don't play Minecraft in a browser.

Well you still need Java in some form or shape if you want to play Minecraft :P

Close vote expired :( I really want to flag it, but I remember making a big stink about it when it was asked and getting hand-waved

@MarkTrapp That does not seem on-topic.

@MartinSojka Argh! I actually do use that :(
Dammit!

(Thanks a lot for using this crap, Norddeutscher Rundfunk!)

user2334
@JasonBerkan Nope, not at all. Would make a great tagline, though: "SciFi.SE: where else can you ask about furniture Joel Spolsky buys?"

7:53 PM
@MarkTrapp I can't comprehend how this question 1) has any upvotes at all, 2) is not closed and burned and buried, 3) accepted that answer.

I click on "Show what people are talking about on Google+" and I'm met with this

user2334
@StrixVaria Also, the person who wrote that answer works for SE

So now I'm looking at their meta, and they seem to be against questions like "what order should I watch X in?" Which to be fair, can be pretty shit questions, unless they're specified by something like "chronologically".
Yet those questions are so much better than almost all the other crap that is okay on that site.

user2334
@Sterno They aren't against them. Just one person is. Reading/viewing-order questions are definitely on-topic and do quite well

@badp I hope that's actually real.

7:55 PM
@StrixVaria Obviously not, Samsung's going to appeal the shit out of that judgement

@MarkTrapp I must have read it wrong. I thought both answers said "Bad".

@badp Even better, actually.

user2334
@Sterno Which question are you looking at?

I tried to flag that question for moderator attention citing, "this is literally the worst question on the entire SE network of sites", but I had already flagged it as "not constructive" and it wouldn't let me submit two flags.

Oh, it does say "explicitly allowed". I read the last part which said it was borderline. That's what I get for skimming.
Well, good then!

user2334
7:56 PM
Yeah… if it's this one, it's just DVK who apparently hates them

@StrixVaria When the jury flat out admits that they ignored prior art entirely, you know an appeal will happen on that point alone.

I don't know why this question was voted down. It seems reasonable to me that there might be such a thing as a "Star Trek couch." The question peeked my curiosity and made me think about it. Isn't that worthy of a good question? +1 from me. — Rick Roth Jan 29 '11 at 4:17

aha! Now that's a clear error message! Now I know for sure something went wrong somewhere.

@badp It gives you exact memory locations. Just, you know, read those.

user2334
@fbueckert They didn't admit that. They said they spent a lot of time on the question, skipped it to move onto the other issues, and revisited it the next day with a new perspective

7:58 PM
@StrixVaria but the process died!

@badp Well just put a watch on those locations for next time :P

OMFG THE CRASH REPORTER IS ACTUALLY REPORTING.

Now random browsing of SciFi.SE is making me remember that Terminator 4 had a really stupid plot.

@Sterno My random browsing of SciFi.SE makes me remember that SciFi.SE is one of the worst places on the Internet.

@StrixVaria It does have entertainment value, though.

8:00 PM
@Sterno I should try and stay detached next time I go there rather than raging that they could let it get like this.

@UQAllulloo What about it?

You'll even get Steam keys retroactively! :D

SciFi needs a tag called

@badp Stupid developers stripping all debugging symbols from their binaries and not implementing correct crash prevention/detection/reporting. You either leave the symbols in, or do your own reporting, but leaving both out leads to errors like these, which can only be made sense of if you ran the program in IDAPro or similar.

8:01 PM
@badp It's pretty popular, I thought.

@MarkTrapp They came back to it? Really? My understanding is that the first one was prior art, and they skipped it because it was bogging them down.

@UQAllulloo Can I play this yet?

@MartinSojka Actually the game came with its own reporting program, which has failed to connect with the crash reporting server for the longest time except tonight!
PROGRESS.

user2334
@fbueckert It was a quotation taken out of context that was later clarified in an interview. First block quote here.

@StrixVaria If you didn't get it in that one Indie Royale bundle, you can bit it/download a demo on their site.

8:03 PM
That reminds me, I saw Eddie Furlong (the kid from T2) on TV recently. The years have not been kind to him.

@UQAllulloo It says "pre-order". Is this like a minecraft pre-order or like a "buy it now then wait to play it" pre-order?

@StrixVaria Like Minecraft.

Q: Am I a person eater because I don't know and I want to know?

JasminIn skyrim I was in Markarth and I has to go in the burial chamber or whatever it's called. The lady said I was a person eater ( I forgot the name ) are you actually a person eater or is she just saying that???

$12.80...hm...

Or maybe it would be

8:05 PM
@MarkTrapp My understanding is also that the jury foreman doesn't understand prior art at all.

uh...

so I tried again to launch the program after messing with DirectX
now the crash reporter's hard at work
...
Reading PB Directory... Succeeded
Sending PB Directory Info... Succeeded
Sending Crash Dump... [2,00MB of 572,22MB]
...572,22 MB?!

user2334
@fbueckert On what grounds? The fact that the jury didn't invalidate the patents? Everyone's an armchair patent lawyer

@badp Had you heard BoI is getting a remake?

8:07 PM
@Sterno Yep, although it's so early in the planning stages it's silly.
I'm not holding my breath :)

@MarkTrapp Well, it's not like I fully understand prior art, either. But when the jury foreman holds a patent himself, he's biased toward protecting that patent.

@fbueckert ಠ_ಠ

Have you actually seen what patents we're talking about here
The juror's patent is about STREAMING VIDEOS ON A MOBILE (oh wow!)

user2334
@fbueckert The jury selection process, through the voir dire, is intended to make sure the jury that's empaneled is as unbiased as possible. Both sides were able to reject jury candidates for any reason they wanted, and yet he still got onto the jury. Both Apple and Samsung had patent claims in the trial, so merely having patent doesn't demonstrate bias. The jury, after all, invalidated all of Samsung's patent claims and several of Apple's.

Wow, apparently there isn't much control over who is allowed to add stuff to Greenlight
Lots of trolling on there right now

8:11 PM
Apple's non-design patents are three: phantom areas around a document as you scroll, double-tap to zoom and changing the viewport as the user changes the focus
Those are the patented features Samsung was found infringing of

@MarkTrapp It's a billion dollar judgement given against patents that patent design aspects. Most patents that involve software or design should never have been granted in the first place.
This judgement just highlights how broken the patent system is.

Two more about the shape of a phone (and those are the infringment findings I find the most silly: which Samsung devices had the iconic one concave button?!)
The last one is about the home screen (and if the screenshots on the internet are truthful there's really nothing that can be said to defend Samsung here)

@fbueckert And in greater context, how pointless. Despite being "infringed" upon, Apple is still worth more money than God.

This whole lawsuit is Apple going, "Well, we don't want to actually compete against Samsung, so we're just going to sue them for violating our broad and vague patents."

@fbueckert except they're not broad and vague, they're just... uh, not actual inventions
(just like the juror's)
well, yeah, the design patents are by design vague I imagine

user2334
8:14 PM
@badp Three devices were found violating the D'087 patent, which was the one that made the claim about the home button (among other features): the i9000 Galaxy S (has the prominent home button), Galaxy S 4G (same), and the Vibrant (doesn't have the home button, but violates the other claims of the D'087 patent)

I wasn't even aware design patents had claims, just a list of drawings
(also that one button looks nothing like the iPhone's - it's not even concave)
@MarkTrapp S 4G has no prominent home button - engadget.com/2011/03/10/samsung-galaxy-s-4g-review

user2334
@badp Oops, you're right: I just did a quick google search to confirm and I guess some other device popped up.

@MarkTrapp no worries

@badp And there's the main crux; that's what all patent trolls are basing their lawsuits off of.
And like it or not, that's exactly what Apple is doing here, rather than competing.

user2334
@badp Well, the claim is the drawing: "The ornamental design of an electronic device, substantially as shown and described." What's described and shown in the D'087 patent is essentially the front panel of the iPhone 3G: thick front bezel, prominent home button, the slit for the speaker, edge-to-edge glass, small border around the main display

user2334
8:23 PM

Thanks, I was just googling that
Yeah, the patent doesn't say anything about the button except that it's round

user2334
Huh, actually, according to the note after the list of figures, none of the things that are in dotted lines are covered. It's just the home button and the front bezel

user2334
Although the speaker slit is not dotted in figure 33

...no comment

user2334
GET YOUR MIND OUT OF THE GUTTER DAM

user2334
8:28 PM
Looking at the devices that violated, the common feature they have thats described in the patent is the front bezel

user2334
The speaker too if that counts

Q: Chest or corpse with three Souvenirs of reprisal

ShykinI am fairly sure somewhere in Dark souls there is a chest or corpse with three souvenirs of reprisal on it. Similar to how you can find 3 sunlight medals in Anor Londo. However I can't remember where I found them. Does anyone know? I searched around but found nothing.

Q: Guild Wars 2 necromancer mask

ArchibaldIs it possible to hide or not even use mask in character creator for necromancer class in Guild Wars 2? If yes, how?

9:03 PM
Woo! Got my swag today!

Yay swag
I love the shirt design, but my god was that thing smelly when I took it out. Makes me wonder what deadly chemicals they used in its manufacture

@UQAllulloo A game with Raven in it? Sounds interesting
