I haven't even seen them yet, that was just a gut reaction to Apple's usual RAM price gouging.

I missed out on the WWDC brouhaha. Is there a summary somewhere yet?

@Brant Desktops are dead. If you don't have $2.1k pronto there's not much new in laptop hardware either. Software side, changes are rather minor; the only thing possibly of note being iCloud sync and the Notification Center making it on OSX

@Brant New Macbook and Macbook pros with minor speed bumps, as well as new Macbook pros in super-slim form factors with retina displays.

oh and Canada gets Siri support if it didn't, iPad 3 too

@Brant Software side there's actually a bunch of rad stuff that @badp just doesn't happen to care about, like Apple rolling it's own maps, Passbook (think Cardstar, but applefied and such)

Canada already had Siri… at least in some capacity. (I'm still using a 3GS.)

11:03 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz oh, right, I missed the maps announcement as I had to leave midway
yeah, they reimplemented Google's MapsGL + navigation stack :P I'm sure TomTom will be happy

What's Cardstar?
Also, any cool new APIs? (It was a developer event, after all…)

@RonanForman I love You Ronan <3

I really need to polish and release my app :(

@Brant Basically, it stores barcodes for all your store loyalty cards and shit, as well as things like airplane boarding passes or movie tickets

@Brant plenty, and if your app is for the desktop you need to adapt it for the new DPI

11:04 PM
and uses geofences to automatically pull up the right barcode when you walk in.

@LessPop_MoreFizz ...if that doesn't smell of US only I don't know what does

@badp iOS

Now if you'll excuse me...

@badp Don't see any reason that it would be.

oops
wrong order

11:05 PM
Geofencing might be less useful outside the US, but passbook itself would probably work fine, IMO.

one moment. let me try this again....
Now if you'll excuse me...

@LessPop_MoreFizz You need the stores to get onto the boat too

@badp Lots of major chains already are - this isn't a new thing. Apps like Cardstar have been around for a while.

@LessPop_MoreFizz None of your major chains are here in Italy

11:07 PM
@Brant $200 to go from 8GB to 16GB. You decide if that's price gouging

Well I can only think of IKEA
nite though

@badp The store doesn't need to do anything special. A barcode is a barcode is a barcode.
@badp Starbucks is one of the examples Apple used?

@LessPop_MoreFizz One store in Italy total AFAIK - in Rome
@LessPop_MoreFizz What makes you think we use barcodes for that? AFAIK it's magnetic stripes

@badp The way most POS systems are designed, the magnetic stripe or barcode both just feed in a string of numbers.

11:08 PM
big AFAIK there

Yup.

The POS can accept input from either for a loyalty card.
It's mostly just a matter of educating cashiers that they can scan your screen.

well I'll let you know if it catches any wind
color me skeptical though
you make it sound like a glorified image app at any rate
take a photo of barcode, show barcode
again, though, I'm sorry but I must go. g'nite

user30
@badp hey yo

user30
the maps uses TomTom data

user30
11:11 PM
oh wait, not sure if that message was sarcastic or serious

user30
never mind, I am also tired

@ThomasMcDonald From what I can tell, it's only using Teleatlas for traffic data

user30

user30
I thought it was going to be all OSM.

@ThomasMcDonald Yeah, I think The Verge is misreading that attribution.

user30
11:14 PM
oh, right.

It's probably 90%+ OSM.
There are a few core features that Apple can't get from OSM or roll it's own for.
Live traffic is a big one.
And Teleatlas happens to sell live traffic.

user30
Ah right, Teleatlas is part of TomTom then?

and probably as a condition requires logo'd attribution.
@ThomasMcDonald Other way around.

...and let people draw dicks in Apple's maps? It'll be interesting to see how they wrangled navigation data from OSM anyway

Q: Preventing every game from turning into a base trade as Terran

Xander LamkinsI must admit, SCII isn't my best game. I'm stuck in the low 20's in bronze (or should I say plastic?) Anyhoo, Terran is my favorite race (mostly because I win the most matches with it - but I digress). The problem I've gotten into is that literally EVERY GAME turns into a base trade as soon as...

user30
11:15 PM
> OpenStreetMap contributors, openstreetmap.org

@badp Presumably the data from OSM isn't updated live. Apple probably commits an image of the DB periodically.

user30
I wonder how the public transport links will work

user30
because there's god knows how many London Underground apps already

presumably, still doesn't stop vandalism
@thom actually at least for as far as I'm concerned OSM has more data about transit than any other map system I've seen out there

user2334
11:17 PM
@Brant Slower speed. Here's a better comparison. Still $72, though

but that's because the local transport agencies are retarded and prefer to keep their data on the respective websites

@MarkTrapp In reality, it's 150 less whatever the cost of 2x4gb is.

OSM doesn't have timetable but still knows where the stops are.

@MarkTrapp Actually, that price is for 2x4gb
so still disingenuous

user2334
Yeah, not a 1:1 comparison. Site didn't have 8GB DDR3L 1600 RAM

11:19 PM
Because you should know by know that memory prices are not linear as dimm sizes increase.

user30
Yeah, GMaps has timetable data for the rural services around here

I guess it's a moot point on laptops anyway where all the RAM slots are already filled. When I bought my iMac last year with 4GB (2x2GB) I bought a 2x4GB kit and put it on the two empty slots for 12GB total.
With laptops you'd have to pull out and toss whatever ram Apple put in there (which you already paid for) if you want to upgrade.

@thom envy

user30
So the public transport search works surprisingly well.

@ThomasMcDonald and @badp, For what it's worth, I know Nokia is pushing hard on local transit/pedestrian mapping stuff, including public transit.

11:21 PM
wheeee

user2334
Crucial has 1x8GB DDR3 1600 for $99. 2x8GB 16GB kit is $191

@MarkTrapp And so, 200 dollars to apple is, if you assume a 72 dollar savings for the 8 gb they're taking out, a 70 dollar markup. Which is, in the scheme of things, not awful.

@less I use Nokia Maps for navigation, still got no commute data here
we're quite simply in the past.

user2334
@LessPop_MoreFizz More or less labor costs

user30
@LessPopMoreFizz @badp As far as I know most (all?) public transport info for the UK is on traveline.info, which licenses it to Google.

11:22 PM
@badp Like I said, I have no idea what the state of the data is. I just know it's a stated priority and something they have lots of people working on.

user30
Which is good because Traveline is a horrible horrible website

It is simply accepted that planning a trip from someplace in Bergamo to someplace in Milan means visiting the Bergamo's, Milan's and regional railways' respective websites separately.

crashes trough mac

user30
For rail journeys I just plug the stations into nationalrail.co.uk

@Fredy31 Keep up, we've moved on from macs to talking about maps

11:24 PM
@thom that's nice, the NL have something similar on a website I've now forgotten the four digit url of

user2334
Macs can't play maps

@lesspop I know you aren't aware, that's why I'm sharing.

FAE
@badp 9292ov.nl

was it 9292.nl? I forget
oh I actually got it \o/ kinda

FAE
@badp both of them work actually

user30
11:27 PM
infact

it ain't GMaps but it tells you the cost of the trip and has very good coverage at least as far as the uses I had of the service go.

user30
UK public transport timetables are 'opendata' and can be downloaded

GMaps does work in Amsterdam though, that was a lifesaver.
@thom niiiice.

Well, this sucks for the community. meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/a/4847/15236

user30
that's surprising actually

A: Rebrand overflow: Should we have a new name for community content?

Ronan FormanIf we do decide to do this, please remember our Facebook page is permanently stuck as https://www.facebook.com/StackGaming, the youtube channel cannot be changed from GamingSE and our email will always be StackGaming@gmail.com amongst other things. I also don't think this is necessary seeing as ...

FAE
@badp Haha, indeed

user30
although that download is a snapshot from last October, so it's not gonna be up to date. There's also a live API for the 360,000 bus stops that have live data

so ready for your olympics Thomas?

user30
As I don't live in London, it doesn't affect me in terms of facilities

boo
you should move to London and tell us about the bloody mess

user30
11:33 PM
and as my dad didn't get any of the £3.5k worth of tickets he applied for, I won't be going to enjoy said facilities.

user30
I can do that though

oh well I'll have the mess told to me from another grumpy Londoner I do know.

user30
since when we went back in April there were a lot of public spaces being ripped up

user30
various tube stations being finished off

user30
we actually went to the Olympic Park. Looked worryingly unfinished.

11:35 PM
and renamed! That must've been fun.

user30
seems like a waste of money to me, not sure who is benefiting from the major investment

should we expect majestic stuff feom the opening ceremony?

user30
corporate partners I imagine

I want to see the queen do the last 50 meters!

user30
did you see our segment at the Beijing closing ceremony? I doubt it.

user30
11:37 PM
although a couple of people I know are drumming/dancing in it

I honestly don't remember.
who gets the olympics in 2016?

damn, i'm trying to find that link from a few days ago talking about what graphic cards to get

user30
It was a routemaster, a few dancers and leona lewis and jimmy page singing Whole Lotta Love iirc

for the 250$ I have

user30
Oh, and then Beckham kicked a football or two into the crowd

11:40 PM
Brazil!

user30
You'll like this.

I'll kick you a soccer too!
nevermind that IIRC our national's out for football these games.

user30
I volunteered to be a 'Games Maker' and volunteer in their technology team.

user30
They wanted me to go to some uni that would have been a £60 return train away for an interview in the middle of my exams for a volunteer place I may/may not have got.

you got nope.avi'd?

user30
11:43 PM
In compensation for volunteering you get transport/food.

user30
You're expected to find somewhere to live for 2 weeks. During the Olympics.

hey that's something!

user30
Unless, you already live in LDN, of course.

I could've hooked you up with sgt baker :P

user30
I just ignored their 'invitation' until they stopped badgering me.

user30
11:44 PM
Would have had to miss some festivals anyway :P

Q: Minecraf: how do I get to the over world?

samI'v looked up how to get to the over world but nothing came up all that I know that it is a (another) weird place (nether, end). do you know how to get to the over world?

Minecraf?

user30
Yeah, it's Noch's new game. Haven't you heard of it?

user30
lol 99 notifications

user30
I am too tired to clean that question up.

11:47 PM
After Minicraft, I wouldn't put that past him.

user30
So I shall disappear into the night.
