might have another game later

@RonanForman I mean I did not survive very long
I died the first night

You couldnt have...

@Wipqozn I think some people thought it fell into the "Why did they design the game this way?" category, but it really doesn't.

@RonanForman oh wait, you mean when we played on the 1st?

No, the actual game.

7:13 PM
@RonanForman on the 8th, I died after about a half hour, definitely on the first night

@Sterno Yeah, I agree with you.

I suspect someone de-marked the mark I had near my base, but I probably just got lost

maybe it wasn't the first night then, I'm not positive
@OrigamiRobot that'd be why I missed it
@RonanForman lol, I figured I wasn't alive long enough to see it :P

I'm hesitant to call this "Not an answer" for sure and flag it, but I'm pretty sure Rift has neither pickaxes (as weapons) nor bows, and I'm pretty sure this is deserving of some downvotes

A: Gearing up for RIFT end game

JakYou need a pickaxe and a bow to win the game!

You were at either 15 or 9 health if it helps.

@Sterno Rift has bows.
NOt sure about pickaxes as weapons though.

Q: What is Satan Doing Here?

GnomeSliceIn the first 'bonus mine' of California Gold Rush 2, after finding my way through a veritable maze of impenetrable rock formations, I managed to catch up with Satan. What on Earth is he doing down here? Does he have any kind of significance?

Why the close votes?

The same user with the crappy Rift answer also left this one:

A: Where can I buy a Summon Fire Atronach Spell?

JakYou get it by going to a mage.

He's trolling.

@Sterno That's an actual answer though.

@GnomeSlice Scroll way back up through chat and @StrixVaria had an issue with it. He thought it fell into the "Why did they design it that way?" category, I believe. Before you argue with me about it, I disagree and think it should remain open.
@GnomeSlice Yes it is. But when you combine it with his rift answer, you can tell he's either very stupid or trolling.
Thus, downvotes!

Actually, what I was asking, is 'does this mean anything in the context of the game?' and I've edited it to reflect that a bit better.
@Sterno Is it an incorrect, answer?
@StrixVaria I've edited that question about satan to reflect my actual question a bit better. "Does he have any kind of significance in the context of the game? Is seeing Satan a sign that something is about to happen? Is there something else nearby?"

7:26 PM
@GnomeSlice It is correct, but useless.

@Sterno Well, don't downvote it... :/

user2334
@GnomeSlice It isn't. Merely going to a mage doesn't get you the spell. Going to a court mage and buying it from them when your skill is of N level is how you get the spell.

@GnomeSlice Why? I downvote answers that have no value so that the better ones go to the top
Just so it's clear, it's not any mage who has it
You have to find specific mages who sell it
Thus the reason his answer has no value

@Sterno If it's not incorrect, then upvote the better ones, and leave the other ones...

user2334
Don't really see the value in replacing a wholly incorrect and unhelpful answer with the right one especially when it completely duplicates the one that's already there. Imagine if we just kept re-posting accepted answers to sop up stray up votes.

7:30 PM
Did you seriously just upvote it?

@MarkTrapp ...Yeah... I was thinking that after I edited it.
@Sterno No?
Wait, yes.
There, unvoted, happy?

@Wipqozn I knew that already, aye

7:32 PM
You guys don't give new users a chance to figure out how the site works and start making good contributions... you just scare them away with downvotes when their first posts aren't stellar.

@GnomeSlice Take a look at his Rift answer and tell me that's a guy who is honestly trying to contribute

FAE
@Wipqozn He's just... totally acting the same, haha. It's crazy.

Anyway, you're probably right. downvotes probably do discourage new users. In this particular case, I don't mind that though

@Sterno I don't know enough about the game to comment on it, but as I said, lots of new users are used to forums and such.

user2334
@FAE I could've sworn I read somewhere at some point that it was intentional: an homage or what-have-you

7:33 PM
@Sterno We were all new once.

@GnomeSlice I will agree that down voting new users to hell is not a good idea, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't down vote them, just not down vote thema lot.

Q: Selecting difficulty on Dungeons of Dredmor

azof02For some reason, no matter what button I press on the difficulty screen on Dungeons of Dredmor, it automatically selects Dwarvish Moderation and Permadeath. Doesn't matter where I click, or whether I press up or down, etc. Hell, I can hit the back button and it moves to the Skill Select screen....

@Wipqozn That doesn't make sense. "Hey, guys, downvote this answer, but not past -3!".

FAE
@GnomeSlice Dishonestly upvoting posts that don't deserve it though isn't good either. We look at the post, not the user. If a contribution isn't good quality, upvoting poor contributions sends the wrong message about what is acceptable here and is harmful to the site.

@RavenDreamer Pollen?

That's not a confused new user

7:35 PM
@GnomeSlice How does that not make sense?

@GnomeSlice I have since removed my downvote from that one, but only because of your edit

@OrigamiRobot All of it.

@GnomeSlice A far more effective tactic is to leave a comment explaining why it is being downvoted.
@RavenDreamer Love is in the air. Tree love.

@OrigamiRobot I agree.

We need to ban tree sex. Think of the children!

@RavenDreamer I am not going down this road...

What do you care? You're a robot. What possible sex life could you-- on second thought... don't answer that.

@RavenDreamer I SAID GOOD DAY SIR!

@OrigamiRobot that's true for anything though, regardless of whether or not it's a new user.

@Wipqozn I didn't mean in place of downvoting. I just meant instead of trusting anonymous voting either way, post a comment if you think it will help make a better user.

I get the feeling I will regret upgrading nodejs.

@OrigamiRobot I'm aware of what you meant. I just meant that it is good practice to leave a comment with a down vote whether it's a new user or not.

@Wipqozn meetings, sorry for the delayed response. I can't cite or quote (due to the location where the conversation took place), but I have this on good authority.

Q: Share Multiplayer World

theChrisKentA buddy and I have been playing Terraria together in a joint world. I hosted and so I have the world and can play in single player when he's not around. He'd like to do the same, is this possible? I doubt we could both play it and then have it sync up the changes, but is there a way to send him...

7:45 PM
@OrigamiRobot Would be nice to see half of that question pulled into an answer

@RavenDreamer Has the music for SGV already been implemented? I was thinking of going back and adding a bit of panning to those two tracks.

@Sterno The majority of the other things he did had nothing to do with sharing the world. I think he only said all those things to quell the argument. I remember flagging a comment or two as offensive.

@GnomeSlice It's not locked down, and the other track is still being updated, so go for it if you want to.

@RavenDreamer Other track?

Yeah. One of my teammates knew a guy, same as I knew you.
Though he's only done one piece, and I like it less.

7:50 PM
You still want me to do another one, for the credits or something?

If you want. It's not a huge priority.
Also, my stomach is twitching. This feels weird.

@RavenDreamer did you eat something digestively-challenging?

Andrew J. BrehmI have two sleeping units standing behind another unit each on the same field. I try to click on their shields but Civ 5 always focuses on the unit in front of it. How can I select a unit behind another unit? (In both cases it's a civilian unit behind a military unit.)

@Wipqozn I would pay pretty good money for an in-n-out burger near my work or house

@agent86 laughs Tim Hortons food isn't actually that good.

@DerpyHooves you Canadians would know. This graph has me thinking it's the best available anywhere.

I followed this chart and wound up at Chic-Fill-A.

user2334
Tim Hortons is the only place I've seen where the line of cars for the drive through goes around the block. And that wasn't even in Canada, just Canada Lite (Buffalo)

user15026
8:07 PM
@agent86 Hahaha it's better than some fast food OMG fry everything places, but it's not awesome.

Just based on this here I don't think I want to eat there, though.

user15026
@MarkTrapp Yeah, I don't get that. Here, sure, it's really your only widely available cheap coffee option, but in the States there are other options, are there not?

user2334
@DerpyHooves The cheap coffee option in most of the USA is Dunkin Donuts. idkmybffjill: Buffalo does have a lot of Canadian expatriates

user15026
@MarkTrapp Fair enough

@MarkTrapp In-n-out is easily this bad around lunchtime and dinner time. You seriously do not want to park in the parking lot of one of those around those times if you ever want to get your car back out.
then again, there are worse fates than being permanently stuck at in-n-out
I think when they opened a few in Dallas, they had to shut down one of the lanes of the highway because the line backed up out of the parking lot, down the access road, and onto the highway

user2334
8:13 PM
Didn't realize In-n-Out had locations that far east. WTF In-n-Out: Portland's closer

user2334
We just have junky Burgerville.

yeah, they won't open a store more than a day's drive from their meat packing/distribution center, apparently
and they just opened one in texas \o/
I live too far, so I haven't been, but oh god want

@agent86 I don't get it - is there anything special about it?
I haven't ever been to a fast food place that was worth mentioning

@agent86 oh wow wtf.
are they like the only food-selling service in the entire county?

@badp You are asking this about America. Have you seen Americans?

8:17 PM
@badp ha

user2334
@badp In-n-Out is just that good, especially when compared to the dreck that is the American Fast Food industry. You've read about the recent Pink Slime fiasco, right?

@StrixVaria No, I haven't, but I believe even Americans know better than to join a queue that goes all the way to the highway

@IanPugsley well, it grows on you. I didn't care for it/didn't get it the first few times I went. But everything's crazy fresh - like no frozen meat, the fries are made from potatoes right there while you watch, the buns are really tasty, etc

...joining at the back of that queue anyway.

@agent86 well I guess I can appreciate this, and I do have to take it back about fast food - I'm this way about Chipotle

8:18 PM
@badp it's pretty insane, but apparently true that people will wait that long for in-n-out

@MarkTrapp do I want to? I'm going to have to lunch at McDonalds tomorrow for the simple fact that I have to answer 'yes' at the second question in that graph.

When we used to go when I lived in SD, we'd order burgers first, then eat that, and then order the fries so they'd be super fresh

user2334
@badp Well, good news! McDonald's says it's planning on stopping using pink slime in its burgers.

user2334
When it'll stop is anyone's guess

@badp as it turns out, there's a lot of "filler" in ground beef, where they essentially do nasty things to the leftover bits of cow in order to get something they can call meat, which actually more approximates a pinkish slime

I mean, this is old news though... that guy on Supersize Me was talking about what's in a chicken mcnugget years ago, and it sounds pretty similar, tbh

@agent86 awesome

@agent86 wuuuuuut
@agent86 The page you were trying to open from the address ( hackaday.com/2012/04/10/… ) will not be displayed due to it's content categorized as "Hacking"

8:23 PM
@badp Oh, never mind: you're good. McDonald's claims it's been out of their supply chain since August

@OrigamiRobot maybe this link is better: tadpol.org/projects/AvrianJump.html

I just don't know how much these claims apply to outside the US really
OH COME ON.
Somebody high fives, I crash and by the time I can get back the steam server dialogue it's already full

@IanPugsley Qdoba > Chipotle

@StrixVaria sorry, but you are wrong

@IanPugsley Does Chipotle have queso sauce?

8:25 PM
I'll take this time to give Win7 a big fuck you and reboot to Win8.

@agent86 Much better.

@StrixVaria if you want goopy liquid cheese on it, you're not doing a burrito correctly

I need to do more things with AVRs :/

@IanPugsley I'm doing nachos, though.
Chipotle doesn't even offer ridiculously delicious nachos like Qdoba.
It's not even a contest.

@badp See you on the other side.

8:25 PM
I will concede that Chipotle's burritos are better.

@StrixVaria you're right, so why are you comparing the two?
if you want nachos, go to a cheapo tex-Mex place and get some nachos

Because Qdoba as a franchise is better categorically merely for having nachos.

you want a burrito, hit up Chipotle

@StrixVaria Which one of these places has the gross lime nachos?

you want tacos, go to a taqueria

8:26 PM
@OrigamiRobot I don't think either of them have lime nachos...

@OrigamiRobot just my house

@IanPugsley No, we went to some place that had gross lime nachos

@ThomasMcDonald Still nethack?

just got back on, yeah

@OrigamiRobot I have a few lying around, I really should do some more projects with them. Haven't found the time or the perfect project of late.

Yeah.

They're both far more accessible than nethack.

@agent86 I want to use one to control my boost converter which will in turn be used to drive a coilgun.
That project fell by the wayside...
Mainly because I never found a good resource for designing boost converters...
Lots of schematics, but no good design help.

user30
ah bugger

user30
8:31 PM
went back into the blinding trap

@OrigamiRobot I find them interesting to use to interface with computers, but the pain of having a serial->USB converter in most of the projects I've used previously has turned me off to them
perhaps now they've got some that can do USB natively and come in a DIP package (since I can't solder SMD)
also it's got to be cheeeeeaaaaap

@agent86 I had to buy a 3pi robot for a project in school and I just used the programmer that it came with for my ATTiny
Minimal tinkering in AVR Studio

@agent86 my first soldering experience (comp. engineering degree) was SMT-sized components on some in-house-etched PCBs

@OrigamiRobot I've got a parallel in-circuit programmer (which dates my previous usage of them...), but I more want the USB not for programming, but for interface after the fact
@IanPugsley yeah, I don't have the eyesight or the coordination for those tiny little things. I watch the techs here do it and go OMG

@agent86 Oh, I see. I would think someone has a good USB library out there somewhere...

8:36 PM
@agent86 there was much frustration involved

@OrigamiRobot yeah, the situation's probably improved since last I looked. I just don't want to have to add a serial->USB chip to every design involving the AVR, y'know?

@agent86 You could take the easy way out and use Arduino :P

@IanPugsley some of those things are like the size of a grain of pepper. I'd hate to have allergies when you're trying to work on stuff like that
@OrigamiRobot yeah, they're just more cost than I generally want to invest for a project. By the time I've ordered it, paid tax/shipping/etc, I want to get more use out of it than just a single project, y'know? Some of those AVR chips are less than a buck, so I don't feel bad if I solder it down or screw it up.

@agent86 That's why I said easy and not inexpensive. Arduino is pretty versatile I think.

Kevin Montrose on April 10, 2012

About six months ago we began work in earnest on the second version of the Stack Exchange API.  A few months later, after a short private beta, we opened up a public beta with tantalizing prizes.

Now it’s time to announce the winners.

An Android app by Karan M, supporting all non-meta Stack Exchange sites and a view into your inbox.

Karan will be getting an iPad 2 the new iPad.

This open source app by Greg Hewgill drops your new inbox items into OS X’s menu bar.

Greg will be getting an Acer Aspire One. …

8:40 PM
@OrigamiRobot indeed. I'd like a good combo of both.
I'd really like to get a raspberry pi, since it seems like a good amount of usability for the price
plus the ability to link it to other things
for $25/$35, you're getting a lot of compute and a lot of IO in a small package
looking forward to the day when they're more readily available

My problem is I can't think of any neat projects :/
I don't wanna build someone else's project.

FAE
@TheStackExchangeBlog Congrats @ThomasMcDonald and @agent86!

yeah, nice going @ThomasMcDonald!
I'm sad I didn't win any of the app prizes, but I'm glad I managed to score a bug reporting prize anyhow ;)

I built a coilgun from a schematic I found and it was neat, but it used a horrible flyback design and it's just not a reasonable charge time.

My iphone weeps

8:44 PM
So I want to design a nicer boost converter driven one.

Anyone else get in that situation where you're sitting at your computer, starring at your massive Steam library, but just end up doing nothing because you can't decide what to play?

@Sterno I've been there before, but I find what works for me is to install a few things, since I'm more likely to play something I'm 2 clicks away from

@agent86 the ones we were working with weren't quite that bad

Q: How do I get across quicksand?

ErinI've tried everything I can to get across a small section of quicksand in the mines, but everytime I get sucked in before I can get to the steip of land. What's the best way to get across the quicksand?

@agent86 TBH the only reason I'm not interesting in more interface things is because it intimidates me.

8:58 PM
@OrigamiRobot the stuff I've seen tended to be pretty abstracted, like you'd type in a terminal window to command the microcontroller, or the mcu would send messages that would be read like a character device or HID event, which doesn't seem that bad
the raspberry pi's just a linux box in a tiny form factor, which is pretty non-scary
I've hooked a AVR Mega8 or similar to a 2-line LCD before, which was kind of cool, but not as challenging as a graphic LCD would've been
