@Wipqozn I think I've already identified in my clarification of the question that I'm aware the horse provides benefits when mountain-climbing is required. I'd still like to see if I could do without the horse except for those situations, and at what point is that possible.
@Wipqozn And what else could I do to provide impetus to get that ground covered but create another question? The possible duplicate already has an accepted answer with extreme up-votes, and the rest of the answers there are also highly up-voted.

@Wipqozn @DaveMcClelland (and others): The only problem I have with posting a bounty is that anyone could easily post an answer that does not meet my requirements and, as long as that answer manages a measly two up-votes and nobody else posts a question that does meet the requirements within 7 days, that answer could end up inappropriately receiving the bounty by default. Then, the lost rep would have not served its purpose.
@Iszi The thing is that there is some competition: they have to post a good answer, because otherwise someone else could post a better one and get more upvotes and the bounty
@murgatroid99 But there's little motivation to post an answer that addresses my particular concern, unless the question itself specifically calls for it. Answers that do not cover this detail can (and already have) still be well-upvoted in the existing thread - and appropriately so, because they answer the existing question as stated.
Whereas answers to my question would be (rather, should be - and I'm trusting the community to do so) voted based on their merit against the specifics outlined in my query.
@Iszi It seems to me that the motivation would be that you intend to award the bounty to the answer that provides that detail, so of all competing answers, the one that would be most likely to receive the bounty is the one that has the requested information

I would play-test the issue myself, but I don't have a character at a convenient save point to do so. (And I really don't want to mess with getting one there just now.)
Now here's an interesting thought: Could one re-claim their bounty by posting an answer which receives sufficient up-voting?

I'm pretty disappointed with my horse. He wasn't cheap -- 1000g -- but he just doesn't seem that fast. To make things worse, he's a bit of a wolf magnet and every time I get attacked I have to tediously dismount, blast the wolf, and then remount.

I have a filled black soul gem and I am not sure what value it gives me over a petty soul. When enchanting, I see the same "Target takes 11 points of frost damage" message no matter which soul gem I choose to use. Why should I bother collecting larger gems and filling them?

@agent86 I'm kind of inclining to agree with the general complaints of Powerlord's re: here. Sure, your answer is useful and correct in the general case and addresses the question as it was asked, but it doesn't really answer the underlying question of how to counter the rail gun effectively on those two specific maps.

FF13-2 status update for those keeping track at home: you can, in fact, have multiple (gigantic 30 MB) save files. But you can only create new save files from the Historia Crux (essentially the map select screen). So no poor-man's quicksaving, but at least you don't have to completely start over if you mess up.
