@agent86 maybe I'll look into Azure

@ArdaXi same. I don't run windows on servers or linux on desktops :)

Why do you do this to me? shivers
@agent86 I run Linux on a notebook. It's surprisingly manageable. I still wouldn't use it as my main OS yet though.

@ArdaXi I've probably said this before, but the real barrier for me is driver support. Server HW drivers for linux are pretty robust, but desktop drivers are usually hobbyist grade, which I just can't tolerate in a PC I'm using day-to-day.

@agent86 Actually, while that depends on your distribution of course, Ubuntu driver support is actually pretty solid.
I even managed a Debian netinst with a Broadcom Wi-Fi chip.

@ArdaXi it's getting better, for sure, but the hardware is a moving target. until PC/component manufacturers take linux seriously, it's always going to be a bit hit or miss, IMHO.

10:05 PM
They do, though. Even Nvidia and ATI make pretty good drivers these days.

@ArdaXi ehhhh, you can make that statement if you want. I worked for a couple of the "big names" in computer hardware in my career so far, and... let's say I didn't find a lot of evidence that they were all that interested in linux or linux driver support.

With the API I was thinking something for Win8 metro.
But there's nothing v2-specific in that.

@agent86 I'm not very familiar with the intrinsics, I'm going by user experience.

@badp yeah, you should just give up. I mean, at least until march. then, totally fine.

Meh, I have exams til mid march anyway

10:09 PM
@badp see? much better idea to wait. ahem.

Q: Is there a way to know which levels lead to secret areas/have switches in them?

Ashley NunnI found my first level with a switch in it (Level 3-1), and it was pretty easy to see (I just had to figure out how to get to it). However, I suspect that this might not always be the case. Is there a way to know, ahead of starting a level, if it has a secret switch in it or not?

0
Q: Does having the Hi-Jump Copy Ability help with the end of level game?

Ashley NunnI got the Hi-Jump ability near the end of a level, and promptly lost it. But that got me thinking - I often struggle with the end of level "game" - basically, a jump off of a trampoline type thing for points. I never get past the first few floors, so I never get many points. Does having the Hi-J...

@NickT I use PDANet.
Free and doesn't require root.
Free version blocks HTTPS pages though.
But that's easy to get around by using a VPN.

@NickT Android.
It's had tethering built-in since... 2.2 or 2.3

@ArdaXi Rarely for free though.

10:18 PM
@John On my phone it is.

@ArdaXi You are one of the lucky few.
For me it would be $30 extra a month.

Honestly, PDANet is pretty crappy, given that you have to pay for free software.
@John I'm one of the Europeans, yes.
I wouldn't call us "few".

Also @NickT for connecting to Linux machines, I use EasyTether. I think that one's in the market.
@ArdaXi You're saying all Europeans get free tethering by default?
@ArdaXi Compared to the rest of the world...

@John I didn't know you had to pay extra for this

@John I'm saying I don't know any European carriers that charge for tethering.
@FallenAngelEyes Carriers modify Android to allow them to charge for it.
Which really means all you need to do is flash, which any competent Android user should do anyway.
Which reminds me, my JIG should've been here by now.

10:21 PM
@FallenAngelEyes Many people do. And I would have to if I wanted to use the built-in method.

@John Is there some public thing you can VPN to or do you need to use your home PC for that

I get both USB and Wi-Fi tethering in my factory Galaxy S2.

@NickT There's probably a few public things, but I just use one of my home machines.

yeah, tethering in the US is like pulling teeth.

10:23 PM
@ArdaXi Well then consider yourself lucky, but don't rub it in the face of the rest of the world.
@agent86 ^^this

I have a java-based phone, and it's been locked down so that I can only make HTTP connections. I could install other programs on it, but only if they do HTTP.

@John It's your own responsibility to flash your phone. Especially if you're using a US carrier, because then you can get rid of all the crapware.

@ArdaXi I believe the exemption in the law that keeps this from being illegal is up for renewal in the US...

@agent86 Do... do you care?

@ArdaXi Yeah...they try to make flashing hard also...

10:25 PM
would not surprise me if some really rich company with a vested interest cough apple cough ponied up big cash to make it illegal

@John So?

And of questionable legality.

You can make it hard. You can't make it impossible.

they monitor the traffic and will kill your contract in some cases.

They try to make it detectable, but that can be circumvented as well.

10:25 PM
so if you want your phone to work, yeah, I guess you should care :)

@agent86 Which is why you always use a VPN.
Seriously, who connects directly through 3G?

@ArdaXi not just the traffic, the bandwidth

@agent86 Well, yes, but that's just something you need to keep track of.

they'll send you nasty texts "your usage pattern looks like you're tethering" etc

@ArdaXi So you think.

10:26 PM
"stop or we'll charge you for the tethering service"

I've got a data plan, unfortunately.
@John So I know.

@ArdaXi Unless you work at a major phone carrier, I fail to see how this is possible.

@John I own the device, neh?

@ArdaXi But not the data traveling to and from it...

How are they supposed to figure out what I do with it?
@John I do, actually, because I own the code running on it.

10:28 PM
@ArdaXi By monitoring your data once it's on their network?
@ArdaXi You own every single website you've ever browsed from your phone?

@John My data, as far as they're concerned, is all non-discriminatory garbage.
AKA encrypted.

@Arda You have a very idealised idea of ownership.

@RonanForman It's the hacker way.

@ArdaXi They can still tell when you're using far more than you should be...

@John So can I. Like I said, I have a data plan.
So long as I stay within 1 GB a month, I'm fine.

10:30 PM
@Arda You're not a hacker, you're doing it to your own systems.

@ArdaXi That just means they don't care. That's a far cry from them not knowing.

@RonanForman You have a very wrong idea of hacking.

@RonanForman That's still hacking. Cracking would be doing it to other people's systems.

this freedom thing you guys have in europe, sure sounds nice. maybe sometime you could teach us how to have "rights" to the things we buy.

@John They know how much data I send out. Big whoop.

10:31 PM
@RonanForman Hacker usually means doing something that wasn't intended to be done with technology.

@Ullallulloo Basically, it amounts to using what you have in whatever way you want.

@ArdaXi It's funny how you defend a point, and then when you lose, you treat it as nothing important.

@John You were talking about them knowing what data I send out.
They don't.

@ArdaXi I was talking about them knowing how much data you send out.
They do.

They can't tell, by the amount of data I use, whether I tether.

10:32 PM
@John I always thought it was the other way round, as cracking seems like breaking the restrictions
@John It's annoying isn't it.

@RonanForman Well, just remember: Cracking = illegal
@RonanForman I have no idea what you're responding to, but yes.

How can they tell if I use my 1 GB a month with my phone or with my notebook?

@John Okay I'll just switch round the meanings.
And the nothing important thing.

@RonanForman Cracking is breaking stuff like DRM. Hacking encompasses the whole spectrum of using technology in innovative ways.

Alright, I'm done arguing with someone who sees the world through rose colored glasses. Enjoy your false sense of invincibiliy, @ArdaXi.

10:34 PM
@John I hardly do.
I just make sure I cover my tracks.
It's not perfect. I know everything I send unencrypted is logged and stored for a very long time.

@ArdaXi You can never be sure.

@John Not always, no.
I'm never 100% sure. I'll grant you that.

Mo matter how safe you think you are, there is always something, somewhere, that can find you out.

True.

@Arda That's the way round I thought, so breaking the DRM of the software is cracking.

10:35 PM
But for practical reasons, being 99% sure is usually enough.

@ArdaXi Usually, but 99% sure is still a world of peace-of-mind away from 100%.

@RonanForman Cracking isn't really a word used a lot any more. The idea many people have of hacking is called something like system/network penetration.
@John True, but so long as I trust my encryption method and I trust my endpoint, I can have peace-of-mind that nobody but the recipient can read my communication.
Which is especially the case if I own the software and hardware on both points.

Also what are the chances they will specifically persecute you out of all the people making knock offs and getting into their networks.

@RonanForman Slim, but not non-existent.

crashes through non existence

10:38 PM
@John What's the chance you'll be picked up randomly off the street as a suspected terrorist?

@Fredy metaphorically speaking.

@ArdaXi Again, slim but not non-existent.

Exactly. Makes no sense to worry about them.

@ArdaXi True, but that's not to say it couldn't happen.

I just make sure to do what I can to maintain every bit of freedom I can.
Those bits I can't protect, makes no sense to worry about them.

10:39 PM
Does anyone know of any good video capture software for ubuntu?

You might be a hacker, you might be a cracker, but the real question is: can you throw a logic bomb down a trap door with your RISC processor to save the garbage file?

We’ve spent the last month polishing V2.0 of the Stack Exchange API in a public beta, and I’m happy to announce its final release.  Kudos to those who have reported bugs, and made quality suggestions during the beta.

At this point the interface to V2.0 is frozen, only bug fixes and performance improvements will be deployed until the next revision.  As always, if you build on our platform we will support you so V2.0 will be around as long as it sees significant use.

Non sequitur (Latin for "it does not follow"), in formal logic, is an argument in which its conclusion does not follow from its premises. In a non sequitur, the conclusion could be either true or false, but the argument is fallacious because there is a disconnection between the premise and the conclusion. All formal fallacies are special cases of non sequitur. The term has special applicability in law, having a formal legal definition. Many types of known non sequitur argument forms have been classified into many different types of logical fallacies. Non sequitur in everyday speech ...
