@John it's got 1,000 upvotes how can 1,000 people be wrong?

@MarkTrapp By that logic, this is a very good question. :P

user2334
@John Soon.

user2334
Then we can all just pretend like it never happened

@MarkTrapp This I have seen. And I am quite pleased that they took it to Meta rather than just up and deleting them all.

@John People ask the strangest things. It feels like they are kinda "how do I do X< I am a programmer, so it is different for me"...which is really bad logic.

@AshleyNunn Yeah...
PSE struggled with that for a while.
No matter how many times I read their FAQ, I still don't quite understand their scope. I could chalk that up to not spending much time there since the latest major scope change, though.

user15026
@John SO, PSE, etc are sites I have 0 familiarity with. I am so not a programmer.

@John The latest major scope change was like a year ago.

@AnnaLear Yeah, and that's about when I discovered Gaming. :P
@AshleyNunn And that's ok. SE has ~80 other sites for you.

@John Gaming - the solution to and cause of all of life's problems.

5:10 AM
@AshleyNunn That's it in a nutshell. Tons of questions get asked on Programmers that are just general career, workplace, or life questions but because many programmers think they're special snowflakes, they think they're going to get a qualitatively different answer if it's asked in the context of programming

user15026
@MarkTrapp Oh, ouch. It would be like me going "I am a university student studying for an English Major....please, name my cat with an appropriately literary name" in like Literature or something.

@AshleyNunn Funny you should mention naming a cat...

user2334
@AshleyNunn cringe there was a question that went something like "How can I make a birthday cake for my programmer boyfriend?" at one point.

@AshleyNunn Although it'd be more like "I like to read books. What should I name my cat?".

user15026
@AnnaLear True.

@Tristan I did. See?

Q: Skryim Enchanting Problem - Why is the base percentage only 17% when it should be 25%?

egervariI'm trying to enchant my gear with Fortify Alchemy in Skyrim, and for some reason, the base % with a Grand Soul is 17%. If I use an Enchanter's Elixir (makes enchantments 25% stronger), it only goes up to 19%. Now, I have 100 points in Enchanting, and I also have all of the perks... so shouldn't...

Thoughts?

user2334
@LessPop_MoreFizz It struck me as a dupe of the numerous other questions about min-maxing enchantments, but even I glaze over when I start to read those questions

@MarkTrapp He tries to insist that it's not a dupe right in his question.
But calling it a dupe misses the point.
these are bad questions
they're just flat out unanswerable.
(Incidentally, these sorts of questions are exactly why I have a problem with the tag or whatever we're calling it now, to call back to an earlier discussion.)

user2334
5:52 AM
Yeah: for all we know they silently changed it in 1.4, which just came out

@MarkTrapp And even if they didn't, we have absolutely no way to have any clue what's going on here.

Q: How many fragments do you need to get Fragment Skills?

UllallullooI noticed that I got two skills when I first got to Serendipity with ~20 fragments, but since then I didn't get any more Fragment Skills until I got to the final level and had maybe 40 or 50 fragments when I got two more. What determines when I get them? Is it just a flat number? If so, how many ...

@LessPop_MoreFizz I had a game crashing constantly one time. I had an error message and everything. No help was to be found. It ended up being some crazy issue with Folding@Home.

@OrigamiRobot Exactly.
The only tech support questions we can reliably handle are common known issues sadly.

user2334

6:05 AM
@LessPop_MoreFizz I think tech-issues can be prone to discussion, too localized, and possibly have nothing to do with any actual game. There's just no way to tell up front.

@MarkTrapp Should they be closed as "not a real question" or exact dupe?

user2334
@Tristan It's hard to say if the dupe would actually solve the problem, and people seem to be insistent that their problem is unique and different than the ones that came before. Like @LessPopMoreFizz says, we have no idea and can't really answer the questions

user2334
So I went with NaRQ

@OrigamiRobot Right, but they aren't by definition those things. The problem is that I think Oak is right that the category is very important to what we are. We just don't have a very good way to deal with bad ones because people are afraid to downvote garbage.

@MarkTrapp Maybe we have one decent answer somewhere in the backlog of questions that we can just start marking them all as duplicates for. People claim they're not the same issue because they're on a different system, but... That really means nothing at this point.
Also @MarkTrapp I just figured I'd compliment you on your XIII-2 success. O.o I don't think i've seen a question that you haven't answered in-depth.

user15026
@RavenDreamer Thank you. I was trying to figure that one out.

@LessPop_MoreFizz I agree that they can be valuable. Extremely valuable in some cases. But we don't grant lets-see-how-this-pans-out privileges to other question types.

@AshleyNunn Needless to say, I don't think I'll be acting on this advice.

user2334
@Tristan Yeah, true: I think this question has been the target of many dupes: Why aren't my Enchanting and Alchemy fortifying each other correctly? Wonder if it's worth someone (not it) making that into a canonical "so you're having trouble with enchanting: here's basic troubleshooting steps" question

(Not the least of which because she's in Italy and doesn't speak a lick of EnglisH)

user15026
6:11 AM
@RavenDreamer No, I can see why not.

user15026
@RavenDreamer That could be quite a barrier

@MarkTrapp No, it's not worth it, because all of them are essentially going to come down to: "If you're doing it right (and we already have a canonical for how to do it right), and it isn't working, well, too bad for you, shit's buggy."

And on this lovely note, I bid adieu.

user2334
@Tristan Heh, thanks: I haven't gotten into a game like this since Skyrim, and I'm a total FF fanboy

@RavenDreamer You only share at most 1/8 of your DNA/genes/whatever.

6:11 AM
@RavenDreamer No English? There's a Quagmire joke in there, but I'm not gonna make it.

It's an unsatisfying answer, but it really is the only one there is.

@MarkTrapp I am, too. I'm excited to play XIII-2.

user15026
@RavenDreamer Good night!

And leaving all of these open just creates bad broken windows.

@Ullallulloo It's actually farther than many many famous people, who married their first cousins.

6:12 AM
Well, actually I suppose random people could still share some.
@RavenDreamer Yes, I still would advise against it.

@RavenDreamer Fun fact: I went to school with a sexually active couple who were first cousins. o.O wat

But I digress, because it's a non-issue.

@RavenDreamer k, goodnight.

user2334
@LessPop_MoreFizz Well that's what I was thinking: have a dupe target that explains how to Do It Right™ and dupe all the things without pity or remorse or fear. The one I thought was a dupe has a pretty unsatisfying answer (I spun around three times, barked like a dog, rebooted my PC, and bam the PS3 version of Skyrim worked)

@MarkTrapp Yeah, there is a canonical already

@MarkTrapp That's my motto, as well! Also, I just backed Tim Schafer's new project. =3 I get to take part in the development... sorta! =D

user2334
I'm interested to see what he does with all that cash money: IIRC, he only needed 400k to make the game. Even considering all the extras like ports/localizations like they mention on the blog, that's a heck of a lot left over

@MarkTrapp I agree. I don't even know how they're gonna use all of it for no more than they're suggesting... Personally, I think instead of trying to use the full funding for one game, they should make multiple.

user2334

Well Notch isn't rich, but Mojang is, just think about how many sales they've had.

@RonanForman Supposedly, Notch is a multi-millionaire. o.o

9:15 AM
@Tristan I don't think they've noticed we have a YouTube channel.
But I'm talking with Laura this afternoon.

@RonanForman Well... Good luck!
@MarkTrapp Out of curiosity, did you back the Double Fine project?

I feel sorry for double fine.

@RonanForman Why?

The entire time they're making this game they'll be plagued with 'Is this game worth all the money they gave us?'
Also they now have investors, and worse than that, Internet investors!

@RonanForman That's true... But, I highly doubt they'll let us down. Schafer's a genius when it comes to designing games. Even more so when it's a point-and-click adventure.

user2334
9:20 AM
@Tristan Nah, by the time I found out about it it was fully funded. Glad he was about to get the funding, but don't see the point as a consumer to overfund the project. I'm not a PC gamer either, so none of the Kickstarter benefits like the beta would be useful. Now if they were offering a Mac demo...

@MarkTrapp They still might! They've already said they were planning to use the over-funding to help port it to other platforms. =P I mostly wanted the documentary. I funded $30 so I can get the HD download.
If someone upvotes something after it's been accepted at 0, does it erase progress toward Unsung hero?

user2334
@Tristan Yes. The badge calculation is based on what your profile looks like at any given time. Unsung Hero (and Tumbleweed) are just supposed to be consolation prizes to those who manage to get really screwed by the system

user2334

Damn. =(
@MarkTrapp One more question. And this is important... What's the battle system like in XIII-2? From what I've heard, I don't really like the sound of it. =\

user2334
9:33 AM
Did you play Final Fantasy XIII?

@MarkTrapp Yessir.

user2334
@Tristan Oh okay, cool: much easier to answer then :P It's pretty much the same thing at its core, with a few changes to streamline the system (like no dumb animations every time you paradigm shift) and a few extras.

user2334
6
A: What are the changes in the battle system from FF13 to FF13-2(if any)?

Mark TrappThere are several differences, some major, some minor: No Eidolons Several paradigm role abilities have been removed or consolidated Paradigm shifts are much faster and do not have heavy animations involved in them Party AI within each paradigm can be tuned to focus on one enemy or area-of-effe...

@MarkTrapp Oh good... The animations during paradigm shift often cost me my Stagger gauge...

user2334
@Tristan What's cool is that you can shift mid action, like a split second before an enemy attack lands. Makes using defensive paradigms much more viable in normal battles

9:37 AM
@MarkTrapp I like the sound of that. Also, your answer makes the Pokemon style combat system I'd been hearing about sound much less drab.

user2334
Yeah, it's not pokemon much at all: monsters just act as a third party member like in FF13. But since monsters only have one paradigm role, you can choose between three monsters for your paradigm deck

user2334
I don't know whether it's because I've had 100+ hours experience with FF13's battles or because they made it a lot better, but I feel like I'm in a lot more control than I did when I played FF13

Nothing wrong with that. Everything I read made it sound like you had no human party members. So now that I know that isn't the case, I'm interested again. =3
I'd love to see them return to their roots, though. Even if it was only as far back as X. Cancel out Tidus's whiny voice acting, and it was one of the best games in the series, in my opinion.

user2334
I think the old, non-chaining/macro systems will likely be reserved for the second-tier FF games from now on, given the response they've received with the battle systems from FF12 and 13

@MarkTrapp FF12's battle system made me so mad...

Q: Are there any RPG games like The Elder Scrolls series?

RoshnalAre there any role-playing games such as Oblivion, Skyrim, etc. but not as graphics-intensive as Skyrim? What I'm looking for is game which has a good storyline (such as in Oblivion) but other than the Elder Scrolls series. So are there any recommendations?

@MarkTrapp I'd never seen that one. But yeah. Once I set up my gambits to "Closest target: Attack. HP Below 50%: Cure" and the like, I really only had to push the left thumbstick...

user2334
Yeah: I hate games where you have to play suboptiminally to feel like you're not cheating. Really lost interest after I figured out how to use gambits with the Negalmur in that one area that spawned skeletons for infinite, unattended LP. Run the game overnight, complete the license grid

@MarkTrapp I don't even think I made it to that point. I was fighting some little rat like creatures on some rusted old oil refinery looking place to fill the license grid.

Feeder are an alternative rock band, formed in Newport, Wales in 1991. Feeder's original line-up consisted of vocalist and guitarist Grant Nicholas, drummer Jon Lee and bass player Taka Hirose. By 1995 they released their debut EP Two Colours and a second EP titled Swim, which was followed by their 1997 debut album Polythene, after being met with critical acclaim and made the UK Top 75. Their second album, Yesterday Went Too Soon (1999), again found favour with critics and reached number eight in the UK. The band's cult status was followed by mainstream success in 2001, as they scored a ...

@RonanForman Remember to wake up today to talk to people.

Well I don't think you have the password, but @FallenAngelEyes can.

1:06 PM
Oh, @Ronan, I'm supposed to remind you to wake up today to talk with people

@GraceNote Was that a reminder from me?

Well, you told people in general to make sure you woke up today

@RonanForman Well I didn't wanna just go in and edit them and not tell you what I'm doing

It turns out she made a typo and it's in the afternoon anyway so..

@GraceNote I already told him :P

1:07 PM
Ahha

Ooh, this EC looks interesting. So you want to be a developer part 1
They got help from game dev.SE for this one.

Oooh, nice

Is that David Fullerton they're talking about?

Q: What are the requirements for gold stars on dance central 2?

joshIs there a list of songs and their required score to get the gold stars?

Q: Does Spore Creature Creator offer the same editing functions as Spore?

JenkoI'm thinking of buying the Spore Creature Creator, and I'm wondering if it has all the editors/parts of the full Spore game?

1:27 PM
Morning.

@Self_Impostor Afternoon.

@RonanForman They credited Kevin and Jin at the end

What's everyone up to?

Here’s the development snapshot of week 7, 2012! List of changes:

Added new world file format called “Anvil” (256 max height and 4096 block IDs*)
Multi-player light calculations do no longer cause affected blocks to be transmitted to the clients, instead the clients will recalculate the light on their own
Villagers will repopulate villages based on how many houses there are available
Some nights in villages will be worse than others…
Added a redstone-controlled light source
Decreased chance for the rare mob drops
Now this is relatively exciting

New AI system?

1:37 PM
> Added a redstone-controlled light source
Hmmmm...

@RonanForman Hasn't glowstone been controllable for a while?

@Self_Impostor I'm pretty sure that's a mod.

Q: Are there any effects to reading an Elder Scroll?

NovaSwordI just got an Elder Scroll while doing the quest "Elder Knowledge", and I wanted to know if there are any effects to reading an Elder Scroll?

@RonanForman Oh, that's likely.

Yeah I don't see anything in the wiki.

1:39 PM
Yeah, I think you're right.

lol
" Similarly to other light emitting blocks, they will melt snow and ice. Like Glowstone, fences will attach to them, allowing them to be used as street lamps with ease."

That's cool, so many people will be happy about this.

How do you feed power to such a lamp "with ease"?

@badp I was wondering that too.
Maybe vertical power transfer has been added as well?

They'd probably have to be on the wall/floor, or have a lever attached.
Also they can power each other (like powered rails) so if you had a stack it would all be lit up.

1:43 PM
Rather, now we could have a proper disco.
(except, well, light isn't directional so...)

@badp You can fudge it. Sort of.
Terrorhedron 3D Coop Tower Defense - Four Pack http://bit.ly/x4t2mm out now! #pcgames
:D

Q: How can you turn a rapid pulser on and off?

badpWe have built a number of large rapid pulsers for Floor D of Fosco's server's community wiki. D, obviously, is for disco. Disco seen from the deejay's point of view, with two jukeboxes. I just wish there were more than two records. The soft lightning is done by a number of extended rapid puls...

Ah, those were the days!

@badp Real MC deejays use note blocks.
@YiJiang wat.

@Self_Impostor Note blocks are so not v 1.2.3_04!

1:47 PM
I'm sure you've seen the video anyway.

@Self_Impostor Fun from new version of DF!
(From /r/dwarffortress)

@YiJiang I hope DF has a "It's a trap!" command

@YiJiang Lol, but what does it mean?

The Rosy-faced Lovebird (Agapornis roseicollis), also known as the Peach-faced Lovebird, is a species of lovebird native to arid regions in southwestern Africa such as the Namib Desert. A loud and constant chirper, these birds are very social animals and often congregate in small groups in the wild. They eat throughout the day and take frequent baths. Coloration can vary widely among populations. Plumage is identical in males and females. Lovebirds are renowned for their sleep position in which they sit side-by-side and turn their faces in towards each other. Also, females are well n...
@Self_Impostor It's a man version of this animal
Think Megaman bosses, but less mechanical

Thanks for the 1) "New maps don't have caves" and 2) "Underground lighting doesn't work" bug reports! Not quick-fixing these, though =)

1:50 PM
@YiJiang That sounds delightful.

oh well, so much for my excitement
starts minecraft with forced autoupdate

@badp "Underground lighting doesn't work?" How did no one test that?

@DaveMcClelland Not surprising.

@Self_Impostor But underground lighting is required for mining. And mining is half the game's name! They seriously just ignored testing half their game
I understand the "it's just a snapshot" argument, but that's just silly

Yeah... as I said. Not surprising.
That sort of thing happens more often than you'd think.

1:53 PM
Minecraft is just a few (billion) hats away from TF2 at this point

@DaveMcClelland And a few billion pixels.

@Self_Impostor I'm a software engineer - I definitely understand being rushed to get things out the door. This would have been sort of understandable when Mojang was just notch, but now that he's swimming in a pile of money he should probably hire a QA department

@DaveMcClelland We are the QA department.

Point.

@RonanForman So much for indie studios being different than large studios. I get enough of that crap from Bethesda and Valve
I just don't get it - Mojang was under no pressure to release this today. Why rush out something completely untested?

1:56 PM
@DaveMcClelland This is a snapshot though, the difference is that no-one is making you use it.

@RonanForman True enough, I suppose. I just don't know how a developer can check in something that breaking without at least wondering a round in game a bit
Oh well, live and learn, or whatever
