Sure, a lot of users will discover the site, ask a question blindly without paying much attention, but I don't see that happening often.

right so allowing close worthy questions to be answered discourages the person who answered from voting to close

no, I'm done with this, I already said I don't want to get sucked into a big discussion. I disagree with certain statements made, but I don't believe that I can convince the majority to agree. we'll just have to hold our own opinions on the subject.

@agent86 Unfortunately, that's not how it works.
We have to form a consensus for the site to work properly.
We can't just agree to disagree.

@ArdaXi I'm pretty sure that we're both allowed our opinions. I don't have to agree with the consensus to uphold it.
I pay my taxes, but I don't agree with how the money is spent, for instance :)
I'm a big enough boy to know that I can't always have my way.

@agent86 Ah, see, there's two ways to deal with that. You can either speak up about it or just sulk quietly.

7:02 PM
that doesn't mean I have to change my way though
I did speak up.
people disagreed.
I nodded and went back about my business

You're speaking up against consensus and you're surprised people disagreed?

hmm... perhaps it was more that the way things operate currently is to not enforce the rules very strictly, and I thought that was the consensus. it's not, we're just lazy. If the consensus is "close vague ITGs" and we just need to enforce it, then okay.

Well... we had consensus, but it's starting to erode because a lot of people seem to vote without knowing the site's policies.

@ArdaXi because people rarely visit the meta (myself included)

You also don't need my permission to close vote, I don't count for more or less than anyone else. If I say to myself "you know what, I don't think this is vague enough to warrant closing" I'm just one of many people making a subjective call, and it only takes 5 to close.

7:06 PM
Yes, but when there are as many close as re-open votes on a question, someone is doing something wrong.
I know it says 'vote', but that doesn't mean that you're supposed to close something based on your own personal opinion.

remember, there's a mathematical proof mapping all policy decision on meta to questions on main

@ArdaXi No, that's exactly what it means. That's why reopen exists in the first place.

eh, I'm not the problem there. if something gets closed for a reason, I don't cast a re-open vote unless the reason has been addressed.

@agent86 I'm not saying you are, but it does happen.

I don't see the need to fight about a subjective call I might make in the future, when each time that call needs to be made, I have a way to make my opinion heard.

7:08 PM
And the problem with that is that later on, a user can point to that question and say "that one is open, why does my question have to be closed?"
@Powerlord Reopen is a mechanism to undo the closing just in case people vote that way.
You're not supposed to keep closing and re-opening until the majority wins.

On close/reopen rapids, the wiser move is to get a full on discussion than having people duke it out with votes.

"Closing is a democratic voting process where the community defines

what questions are generally on-topic and generally off-topic for this site.
what questions are duplicates."

@GraceNote this is my general policy.

and it's also important to note that close votes expire after 4 days.

Technically, it's an available option to just exhaust both sides of their votes, but that doesn't really come to much of an understanding or resolution.

7:12 PM
"When should I close a question?
Questions that are sufficiently off-topic, as outlined in the FAQ, should be closed by casting close votes. "

lets quote mine from random things on the site and ignore the point

@ArdaXi And yet, the FAQ is (likely, can't read it at work) wide open about what's acceptable and narrow about what isn't. By that wording, any Meta decisions we make that aren't updated in the FAQ are, in fact, wrong.

@Powerlord Exactly, so it's a little pointless to quote that page.

man, I wish there was a close vote on discussions in chat :/

@ArdaXi I quoted that for three words: democratic voting process

7:17 PM
We do have a timeout function but I think just a stern glare from a dinosaur would be sufficient.

@Powerlord Democracy is more than just voting though.

@ArdaXi No, but that's a large part of it.

@Powerlord It really isn't.

So if we all vote and say you're wrong, thennnn

Close votes are a means of enforcing policy, not creating it.

7:19 PM
I'd say they're both

@GraceNote what kind of dinosaur? brontosauruses don't really have a stern enough gaze to be effective. This is very important.

@agent86 I was thinking of delegating the task of "Find an appropriate dinosaur and bring it in here"

Our system isn't truly democratic anyway.

@agent86 you mean Apatasaurus

Jury nullification occurs in a trial when a jury reaches a verdict contrary to the judge's instructions as to the law. A jury verdict contrary to the letter of the law pertains only to the particular case before it; however, if a pattern of acquittals develops in response to repeated attempts to prosecute a statutory offence, it can have the de facto effect of invalidating the statute. A pattern of jury nullification may indicate public opposition to an unwanted legislative enactment. It was feared that a single judge or panel of government officials may be unduly influenced to follow ...

7:21 PM
@Powerlord That's nothing to do with democracy.

That sounds like the people ruling to me

what a dinosaur directing its stern gaze upon us might look like

@ArdaXi It most certainly does. Specifically, with the people overturning the rule of the government.

I'm not going to debate against the US legal system, this isn't the time and the place for that.

Alright, @agent86, looks like you've got yourself the task. Good luck!

7:22 PM
@ArdaXi What have you done with Arda.

ooh, how about a 2-for-1 - a dinosaur with LAZERS

@GnomeSlice Too many Americans here to do so safely.

stern gaze + lazers + dinosaur = win

@ArdaXi its always the time and place if you have a TARDIS

@NickT Incidentally....

7:23 PM
@agent86 That is not a dinosaur. That is Godzilla

> a : government by the people; especially : rule of the majority

@OrigamiRobot Doesn't he always skip Wednesdays? Or was it Thursdays?

@ArdaXi While I know it won't change anything, you can at least take comfort knowing that you know more about the process and system than I do.

@Powerlord That's... really not what democracy is.

hipster dinosaur, perhaps?

7:24 PM
Democracy means every single adult has an equal say in everything that affects their lives.

@agent86 C-; would not get looked at sternly again

lazers

not nearly stern enough

@ArdaXi you actually strike me as far more American; your position seems identical to that of a strict constructionist like that of the US Republican party, who believe that the existing laws as passed down by the forebearers shall never be altered

7:25 PM
@NickT What.

oh so the bridge is about politics today, I see

@agent86 This isn't a very stern look

@NickT You do know that conservatism isn't American, right?

@OrigamiRobot Godzilla is not a dinosaur? Wikipedia disagrees.

@ArdaXi you're somewhere between Tea Party and general Republican

7:26 PM
@InsidiousForce It's also about stern dinosaurs. I recommend you stick with our topic instead.

oh stern dinosaurs!

@NickT I can assure you I don't fit in the American political system.

@ArdaXi your method about arguing policy echos that in our country quite well though

Politics are generally universal.

7:27 PM
@ArdaXi In modernity, democracy is often construed as being concerned with a voting rule for determining the will of the majority.

I thought all poltics were local

@Krazer That's the layman's understanding, yes.

@agent86 where does it disagree?

@GraceNote cmon, that dinosaur has a laser - how can you not look stern while wielding a laser and riding a shark? that's like a club sandwich of stern right there.

@Krazer Besides, in America you generally don't get to vote on most policies, do you?

7:29 PM
@ArdaXi With that said, if that voting rule is inherently flawed as a decision mechanism, then democracy is inherently flawed as a political system.

@agent86 Because you only have one of about 4 responses to such a sight, none of which are what a stern look meant to entice submissiveness or admonishment.

@ArdaXi The US isn't a direct democracy, more's the pity.

@OrigamiRobot > a giant, mutant dinosaur with rough, bumpy charcoal-grey scales, a long powerful tail, and jagged, bone-colored dorsal fins.

They would be along the lines of: bemused, amused, HUZZAH, and abject terror.

Technically, the US is a Republic

7:30 PM

@agent86 Sounds like a Godzilla to me. He's his own thing.

@Krazer Well, maybe it is. It is dangerous to let people vote on subjects they have inadequate knowledge of. See: SOPA.

it's a stern I love you, like when your dad says "I love you son/daughter, but you are acting like a total d-bag."

@agent86 that is referencing Godzilla's appearance

@Powerlord More specifically a constitutional republic in which majority rule at it's core. :p

7:32 PM
@OrigamiRobot if it looks like a dinosaur, and roars like a dinosaur, and eats people like a dinosaur, then it may as well be a dinosaur

and if you don't like it, I'll start posting episodes of barney.

@Blem Image not found.
Try 'upload from the web'.

@OrigamiRobot he's a dinosaur-era prehistoric reptile

@ArdaXi I think it's more dangerous to let money do the talking (or voting) than the things that really matter.

7:33 PM
who is referred to as a dinosaur canonically in the Godzilla films

@ArdaXi Does for me when I get hotlink blocks.

@GnomeSlice Yeah, apparently this thing was still passing the referer for some reason.
@Krazer Ah, now we venture into the dangers of democracy combined with capitalism.

Q: Bukkit shoot tnt where player is looking

HcgRandonHello. I want to shoot a piece of tnt from the players face and then let it explode when it hits the target block. I set it up so where the player looks and type in /tnt [power] /cannon [power] or /t [power] it will blow up at the target block: if (cmd.getName().equalsIgnoreCase("cannon...

^ This us or GameDev?

I don't quite get why we really care about the actual definition of words here

@GnomeSlice was that better?

7:35 PM
@GraceNote I don't think we do programming questions.

@Blem Yes.

@ArdaXi It's almost like becoming an oligarchy.

@NickT Because it's fun? I gave up on getting any kind of resolution here ages ago.

@GraceNote Too late, it was already moved to GameDev.

@ArdaXi I don't think so, either, but I don't know how much of Bukkit is in-game stuff and how much is more of a codey, mod-making-game-dev stuff that we already have that whole "Mods on GameDev" thing
@Powerlord So it has, so it has. Well, seems to be that's where it should've gone.

7:36 PM
@ArdaXi yeah, but you just seem to pigeonhole any argument by saying their word selection is wrong when nobody else cares but some pedantic debater

@NickT When I use a word, it means exactly what I want it to. No more, no less.

@NickT Are you really just trying to troll me?

@OrigamiRobot this is not math

@OrigamiRobot Cheshire Cat?
...or was it someone else? Criminy, it's been too long and I never got to read the actual book anyway...

@GraceNote close. Humpty Dumpty

7:38 PM
Right, Humpty Dumpty.

I'm not writing words because I'm formulating some absolute mathematical proof, I'm using them to convey a thought

@NickT Look, debating involves pedantry. There's no way around that. If you don't like it, don't get yourself involved in it.

@NickT Which is why you need to include bacon.

If I'm being imprecise, ask me to describe it better, don't poke apart my words

@NickT Those are the same thing.

7:39 PM
@ArdaXi this isn't some debate competition, this is the real world

Or do you literally want me to use the words "describe it better" next time?

@NickT @ArdaXi Hug it out!

@ArdaXi I try, but you continually bring it down to the level of discrete words rather than the idea at large

@NickT So? Same rules apply, except the debate is usually of lesser quality in the real world.

7:40 PM
@NickT I'm sorry, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Q: Do contract cards only work on one player?

AdanionEach player card on my Madden Ultimate Team has a limited number of games they can play on contract. I can get contract cards to increase the contract number, but is that card only usable one time on one player?

There is, because nobody but you cares
2

Some people get hung up on the details, some people can only look at the big picture. The world happens to need both kinds of people.
@NickT I highly doubt that.

@ArdaXi I think his issue is more the tangential aspect of it - the discussion is no longer related to the community's voting habits and policy creation/alteration

@IanPugsley Well, yes, but I've long ago given up on the idea of actually debating properly on chat.

7:42 PM
I'll probably receive a stern dinosaur from a stern dinosaur (@agent86) for mentioning it again

If I actually want to discuss policy I'll post on meta.

@GraceNote we need an official moderator ruling on an important subject - is Godzilla a dinosaur?

He's a Godzilla, for the last time.

HE's GOJIRA

@agent86 I'm inclined to agree with @GnomeSlice here.

7:45 PM
@ArdaXi Yeah, but ultimately the details don't matter, what matters is the idea that comes out of it

@GraceNote fine. your opinion no longer matters to me at all. I'm going to sulk now.

@NickT Of course details matter.

@agent86 I've got your back - Godzilla is a mutated dinosaur, plain and simple

@agent86 I'm sorry, but fighting robot hordes while riding a time-travelled dinosaur is just an entirely different experience than fighting robot hordes while riding Godzilla.

@IanPugsley amen, preach it!

7:46 PM

@InsidiousForce Yes.

@IanPugsley it depends on which Godzilla

@InsidiousForce There, there...
Got some nice sharp teeth, there, though

@GraceNote you are dead to me. See if I invite you to my dinosaur movie watching party. we were going to watch all the godzilla movies back to back, but now? Now... you're just going to have to live with the knowledge that you are forever snubbed.

Q: Is Godzilla a dinosaur?

Nick TIs Godzilla a dinosaur? Is he related to the dinosaurs of the Triassic-Cretaceous period moreso than just a random lizard of today?

@agent86 Aside from mandatory club activities, I only watch Godzilla movies for Mothra anyway.

wait, I shouldn't have posted that here
@GraceNote gonna ruin my fun

if/when I rule the universe, I am going to clone a dinosaur and call it godzilla and then unleash it upon all the nonbelievers. we'll see who is a dinosaur when he's ripping out your entrails and feasting upon them, after lazering them to warm them, of course.

@NickT By doing what?

I dunno, that seems borderline off-topic for SFF
that and somewhat vague

7:49 PM
If you thought it was a risky endeavor, just be prepared for the consequences, but if you think you can squeeze a legitimate question into there I'd say all the more power to you.

what consequences
the consequences of asking a bad question are virtually nil
sometimes positive as far as rep goes

@NickT Depends more on the frequency and severity. Some people get (and reasonably so) pretty uppity about these things depending on where and when you ask. If it's a bad and close-worthy question then the obvious consequence is closure, but there's also the non-numeric rep to take into account.

I got +59 rep from a -2 question

@OrigamiRobot the American Godzilla movie isn't even canonical to itself
it's so bad

@IanPugsley the specific Godzilla in question is the Hanna-Barbara flavor

7:53 PM
@NickT Don't talk to me about consequences for poor conduct on the site.

I know who can answer all out dinosaur questions

@OrigamiRobot which is itself a cartoon adaptation of original Japenese movies, so unless they contradict the originals via mentioning a specific origin for Godzilla (which I doubt they do) it's irrelevant
@NickT not at all, it's definitely a work of speculative fiction

@OrigamiRobot That's from Jurassic Park, right? :P

@Powerlord It's Mr. DNA

@NickT although I do my best to only ask good questions and give good answers, I know that sometimes I'm going to raise someone's ire. I try to shrug off the mistakes as best I can. sometimes a decision about what's good or bad ends up being subjective anyhow.

7:56 PM
Good lord, didn't you people ever watch The Land Before Time movies?

oops, so far the prevailing opinion is that godzilla is a dinosaur... better get over there and refute their link guys, or it will become forever and ever the correct answer!

@GnomeSlice sings Big Big Big Big Wateeerrrrrr

The Land Before Time is a series of animated films centered on dinosaurs. The series began in 1988 with The Land Before Time, directed and produced by Don Bluth and executive produced by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. It was followed by a total of 12 direct-to-video sequels, though none involves the participation of Bluth, Lucas, or Spielberg. Voice actor Frank Welker is the only cast member from the first film to have a role in every incarnation of the series. Synopsis The films follow a friendship group of dinosaurs, by the names of Littlefoot (Protagonist, Apatosaurus), Cera (Tricer...

@GnomeSlice That's a title I haven't heard in a long time

7:57 PM
@OrigamiRobot :D

@GnomeSlice Fred from Scooby Doo is in every Land Before Time? :O

IT'S CALLED A BRONTOSAURUS

@Powerlord Thats nothing. Susie Carmichael is in EVERYTHING

I LEARNED ABOUT THIS STUFF WHEN I WAS 6, TRUST ME, I KNOW
2

@NickT Godzilla was conceived as a monster created by nuclear detonations

8:00 PM
@NickT As much as it pains me, it's Apatasaurus.

Man today is crawling by here.

@NickT IT'S PIKACHU

@MarcoCeppi It's PICHU! I LEARNED ABOUT THIS STUFF WHEN I WAS 6, TRUST ME, I KNOW.
:P

...Kongregate has a paid 'member' subscription now?
=[

8:02 PM
Anyway, I just thought about Frank Welker, because he's been voicing Fred from Scooby Doo in every Scooby-Doo cartoon series for the past 40 years.

@MarcoCeppi Huh, others rehosted that as well. I actually knew one of the others who rehosted that.

@Powerlord ?

Dont worry i know parkour

8:05 PM
@GnomeSlice Hahahah

8:17 PM
@NickT I was going to ask that tonight :)

@Powerlord I know what you meant, I was just being silly.
I do that sometimes. warning: I do not actually care if godzilla is a dinosaur or not

@agent86 but it is important

@OrigamiRobot well, according to the most reliable source anywhere, stack exchange, godzilla is, in fact, a dinosaur. hopefully that validates your worldview and you can move on with your life happily

8:41 PM
@agent86 You would be surprised at how stubborn I can be

@OrigamiRobot I've been on the internet for a long time now. Very little surprises me.

Today the Team Fortress team took action to bring certain server operators into compliance with our previously announced "honest server policy". Examples of server modifications that resulted in this policy include:
* Running bots and trying to make them appear that they were human players
* Running bots and circumventing or modifying the usual mechanisms that the bots are advertised to the server browser
* Running with significant gameplay modifications, such as respawn times, without having the proper tags on their server designed to alert quickplay and automated searches about those mod
