I also played Aion. I found it to be overly grindy.
I have played other asian MMOs like that, but Aion felt like the pulled the rug out. In the early game, there were lots of quests. By the mid-game, they slowed to a trickle, and with levels taking longer, they felt like a waste of time. Hooray, I just spent 45 minutes on a quest that netted me 1% of a level...
Too bad, because it had a lot of fun aspects. I love the castle attack/defense game. I haven't seen it done that well since Ragnarok.

Yeah, I really liked that aspect

Also their take on flight as a limited resource was interesting. Mid-air PVP was really tense.

And yeah, the combo western/eastern was a little much for some
They have these things now, flight path things I guess
but they have like
pets now o_O
I dunno, seems like the game kinda jumped the shark

ha

like those Asian MMO type pet thingies
that'll run around and pick up loot and stuff and other things

7:04 PM
Huh.

The Fortress mechanic really was awesome, I liked that a lot but yeah, no time for it really anymore :/

@FallenAngelEyes Did the lag ever improve in the fortress battles? It was really bad sometimes when I was playing. (But fun enough that I still did it.)

I played regularly up until about 4 months after release when I got my concussion, and it was still pretty horrible

Too bad, I think that was one of the big selling points

Yeah, it was really fun when it wasn't slideshowing
What class was your main?

7:15 PM
Gladiator

Nice, I had a glad alt but didn't get up past 26 I think
Assassin was my main, got her to 44, then Spirit Master, Glad and Chanter
I actually quite enjoyed Chanter, I was surprised at how much I ended up liking it.

I haven't played Aion. I thought about it, but my friends who tried Aion had already moved back to WoW by the time Aion went on sale on Steam for the first time.

I always intend to do a caster in MMOs, but I've never gotten past low level alts unless it's a healer.

@sjohnston NEVER?! :O
It seems like I play casters more in MMOs than anything else.

@Powerlord True story. Kind of amazing considering the slew of MMOs I've played.

7:19 PM
I don't really play healers, but I do like playing buff/debuff

I frequently begin the game thinking "Ah, I'd like to try a caster, but casters are always a lot of work. I'll roll a warrior (or equivalent) for now, just to get a feel for the game."
Then 80 levels later I think, "Gee, I'd like to start a caster"

I tend to rely on tricks of a sort.

@FallenAngelEyes Seems like most MMOs don't have that as a pure class. The only other one I can think of is Mesmer in guild wars

Which is probably why all my good classes in TF2 are things like Spy, Engineer, and Sniper.

@Powerlord In WoW, I started a mage, but after about the 50th time I had to sit and drink post-fight I said "&#$@ this"

7:21 PM
Granted, I tried to avoid Spy yesterday when we were playing the "new" maps to the game.
@sjohnston That's likely why Mages can summon water. :P

@sjohnston I play City of Heroes and they have buff/debuff primary/secondary classes

Granted, over the years they've changed how quickly mana is used.
Speaking of CoH, I've been meaning to try the free to play Champions Online.

I didn't actually get into playing casters at all til Guild Wars
then I fell in love with Necromancers
and Mesmers
my main is a Nec/Mes

@Powerlord Yes, but my god, why would you design a class that is required to stop playing for short intervals every couple minutes? It's massive gameplay fail.

I also like playing Crowd Control
My first love though is Rogues and AoE Melee
Champions is... I dunno
I guess it depends on where you're coming from

7:24 PM
Never got into any Superhero MMOs. Tried trials and never played more than one session.

@sjohnston To teach you to use your wand more often.
Granted, when WoW launched, wands were pretty stupid.
Once they changed wands to auto-shoot until canceled, they worked much better.

@sjohnston I mostly got into it because a good chunk of my friends from the US played/play and it's my main way to game with them
I enjoy creating characters though :)

@Powerlord Auto attack is equally unengaging as a gameplay mechanic. Click monster, wait for it to die. I needs to push some buttons!

I'm completely spoiled by CoH's customization options
Champions, I didn't like so much, partially because I just don't like the graphical style
Which may seem shallow, but if I'm going to potentially spend thousands of hours in a game, I want it to be something I like to look at

owh FFS was playing HL2 EP2 and my sister calls me on Skype: BAM! Game hangs :\

7:26 PM
Agreed

@sjohnston Last caster I played was Warlock, which is more or less 1. Send pet in to attack. 2. Cast DoTs. 3. Cast spell. 4. Shoot wand. 5 Occasionally repeat steps 3 and 4 until dead.
Of course, this is during the leveling phase.

Which is partly why I got into Aion, despite it being fantasy. I really liked the style. I just prefer more realistic design (which is one of the reasons I don't play WoW)
Champions pisses me off because there is only one face :|

@FallenAngelEyes Mmm, you'd hate TF2 for FPS games, then.

@Powerlord I don't know. I'm sure I'm unfairly oversimplifying. I just haven't fallen in love with casters, despite some effort to do so.

@Powerlord I really like TF2 actually. It's mostly a standard I hold my MMO's to.

7:28 PM
What do you get when cross a cartoon and a James Bond film? Team Fortress 2!

true
@Powerlord That is very much by design from what I've read.

I'm not saying I don't enjoy stylized stuff, I guess I'm just picky about style for MMO's.

@Powerlord I loved being a warlock, if you know all the tricks of the trade :P

But Champions Online only has one facial option and then sliders to customize it. And it's horribly uncanny valley so you pretty much have to make 1 face if you want it to look decent.

Q: How far can mobs see?

ZoredacheHow far can mobs see? I know if I have my render distance set to far then I can see mobs before they see me. Does anyone know precisely how far a mob can see? This would be really nice to know since I could simply make sure there is water around my island that larger then what mobs can see.

So all your characters end up looking the same

Ha

So I tend to prefer CoH over CO for that reason. Also the restrictions for F2P kind of suck.
I just like making characters and backstories and crap for CoH. Yes, I'm an occasional RPer, I have no shame. :P

@FallenAngelEyes NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... er.. .OK.

7:32 PM
CoX is one of those games that's been on my radar for a really long time, but that I've never played (short of a spat with a 7-day free trial shortly after the game launched so long ago)
I want to try it, but I don't know anyone else who plays that I can play with.

@Brant: If you want to do another trial, I can send you one
If your trial was so long ago, it might let you do another

I played CoH a LONG time ago, but only once since, via a CoV trial.
Well, OK, it was CoV I was trialing instead of CoH, but almost the same thing...

Also, is there a mac client yet? :P

I have... uh... 29 characters on the Virtue server >_>
There is @Brant :)

@FallenAngelEyes TWENTY-NINE?

7:33 PM
ah good

The max is 36

Isn't that a bit overboard?

for a single server
@Powerlord There's not a lot of endgame in CoX
So people just roll a lot of alts
There's a loooooot of powersets
and every combo plays differently with each other

Yeah, CoX is very altaholic

so rolling new characters to try those out becomes addicting
But
They've recently started putting more endgame stuff in

7:34 PM
CoH kinda bored me after a while, because it seemed like I was doing the same small set of missions repeatedly.

Which is nice, cuz my 50's have more to do
Well they also have the Architect Entertainment system now, where you can create your own missions

I really liked the job system in FFXI. Any time you're in town, you can just swap classes, get your other set of gear out of the bank, and roll out.

and publish them for others to play
and play other people's
most just use it for farming, but there are some really good ones out there, storywise

Of course extra characters beyond the first cost you an extra $1/mo, so you didn't have much choice...

But yeah, the Incarnate System they are rolling out has really added a lot to the game
More endgame goals buildwise and stuff. I'm really happy.
And they're planning on rolling out a lot more stuff.
I won't really go into details cuz if you haven't played, it won't mean much out of context, but I'm excited. :)
also @Brant if you're looking to play again, Freedom and Virtue are the largest servers

7:37 PM
How much is CoH/CoV a month now?

It wouldn't really be "again", I only put 2 or 3 hours into the game back in 2006 or whenever it was, and at least half of that was in the character designer.

Freedom is full of a lot of stupid people though. It's kind of the PvP server? Virtue is the unofficial RP server.
I prefer Virtue because it has a population comparable to Freedom's and way, way less douchebaggery
$15 a month @Powerlord
and they are merged games now
so you'd get access to both

I'd check it out if some other folks did too and we all joined the same server.

Going Rogue is the new expansion, that is separate

(but I have no friends)

7:39 PM
Well if you ever start up again, lemme know :)
I don't like PvP in CoX though because the game wasn't initially designed with PvP at all, power balance wise.

I don't actually own the game... when I played it before, it was on a friends account... so if I were to buy it, I'd buy the complete set that included Going Rogue.

So it's sort of tacked-on.
And all they have is open zone PvP and Arena.
No CTF equivalent or territory control really, which is kinda meh.
So until they add that, I don't really PvP.

I do find it funny that a company is selling the City of Heroes Architect Edition through Amazon for like $4.

probably just a cd key
so if you buy a new account, do you get CoV and CoH?
Going Rogue is the only paid expansion, right?

Even funnier, I found City of Villains for $1

7:42 PM
The game definitely has its flaws. The graphics feel dated, though they did do the Ultra Mode update which makes things look a lot nicer, the aforementioned relative lack of endgame, among others. But I enjoy it and I don't need to sink a lot of time into it to feel like I've accomplished something.
...Despite the fact I have over 4,000 hours logged in the game.
<_< >_>

I don't see the lack of an endgame as a bad thing, honestly, as long as the road leading up to it is fun.

Oh blah

Anywho, I'll stop rambling about CoH now. :P

It linked the collector's edition. Stupid JavaScript links

7:43 PM
GR is the only paid expansion, yes
CoV CE is only special anymore if you want the extra bits that come with it, like the HeroClix or the helmets

A lot of people feel that choosing an MMO is like choosing a life partner, as though they're stuck with it forever so it damn well better have a good endgame and pvp and all that kitchensinky stuff. I hate that outlook.

@Brant If you have a good group of people, it's great. Even PUGing though, it's decent, if you're on a large enough server.

I mean, hell, just play it until you get bored and then stop. That's what you do with single player games, right?

Anywho, gotta go eat dinner, b/f's getting cranky. :P "But I'm talking about gaming!" "But the food is getting cold..."
So BBL! runs

Nobody whines that Magika's endgame sucks.

7:45 PM
If you want a game that has no monthly subscription fees... get FF14. Or maybe I should call it FF14 paid beta, seeing as how I haven't heard that its bugs have been fixed yet.

@Powerlord As a bitter, jaded veteran of FF11 I have to strongly advise you to stay away from anything that has that dev team's fingerprints on it.
Even if it is free.

@Brant Tried FF11, didn't care for it.

FF14 is pretty much more of the same, from a game design standpoint

Maybe I would have liked it better if I'd played it on a console, since the PC version of FF11 played like a poor console port.

Grindy and slow.
Great worldbuilding though.
I mean from a lore/art design standpoint--apparently the actual gameworld is mostly assembled from a bunch of prefab chunks of cliff face and hillside
(so was FF11, but it was okay back then. they haven't learned any different though.)

7:58 PM
whistles

@brant: bored?

I always thought them putting a number on the MMO FF's was silly

8:15 PM
@FallenAngelEyes I think they should have just called them Final Fantasy Online and Final Fantasy Online 2 (or Improved or something)

Likewise

Marketing, though.

It really makes no less sense than slapping sequel numbers on a series of games whose story and gameplay are different in every iteration.

chuckles
I often wonder at the design decisions in Java
a lot of them sound good but are just a PITA

Honestly, for generics, I wish they'd at least did what .NET did: Don't try to make generic collections backward compatible, create new collections for them!
Which resulted in a half-ass way of dealing with generics in general, which I think I discussed in detail yesterday

I think the poorly named synchronized versions of everything is worse

So, how long until @badp moves these to Programmers? [Is that a request? -§]

@Powerlord C# is Java++. I just don't know why anyone would use Java anymore.

ArrayList vs Vector, etc

Java recommends using the non-synchronized ones, but introduced a whole bunch of new ones that are synchronized on write only... like CopyOnWriteArrayList and ConcurrentHashMap.

yeah, at least it's obvious not to use those

9:24 PM
@CRoss Actually, if you're accessing a collection that you'd rarely updated that's read from multiple threads, you'd probably want the newer ones. ConcurrentHashMap in particular.
Those largely replaced using Collections.synchronizedMap and crud like that.
Going back to what Arda said earlier...
@ArdaXi One word: Android.

Yay!
@Powerlord What about the platform that MonoDroid runs on?
(Yes, I know)

@ArdaXi You'd be writing C# code that gets translated to Java code. Do you REALLY trust the C# to Java compiler enough to risk the wacky errors that might ensue?

@Powerlord No, you wouldn't.
MonoDroid is implemented using the NDK
There's no translation going on, anyway. You get access to Java objects through marshalling, but it's not recommended.

...doesn't requiring yet another VM be installed on the phone default the entire point?
@ArdaXi Yeah, sorry, I looked at the limitations page first, saw it mentioned Java and made an (invalid) assumption.

@Powerlord The Mono VM runs next to the Dalvik VM. It pretty much replaces it.

9:32 PM
However, the Architecture page implies heavily that you need the MonoDroid VM already installed on the phone for things to work. Which isn't likely to be done by default.
