@LessPop_MoreFizz I'm probably going to get suspended for this, but there are only two words for that.
Holy shit.

Q: How do I screw my neighbor?

BlakeIn the online multiplayer of the 2010 release of You Don't Know Jack, there is the ability to screw your neighbor, which makes them answer the question right away. I may have missed something in a tutorial and skipped over it, or they don't say, but I haven't seen any indication of how to actua...

@ArdaXi It's a pretty amazing answer

Not as amazing as... bacon!

Oh great, now I'm hungry. Luckily I have pizza in the oven.

@Powerlord Fascinatingly enough, I am about to go get some bacon
and an egg
on a roll
Mmmmmmmm breakfast sandwich

3:07 PM
Anybody here plays Sims 3?

@badp A long long time ago, why?

Can you quickly explain to me how do fridges work in the game? :)

chuckles

@badp Erm, you put money in and you get food out.
They're basically infinite automats.

Too bad real fridges don't work like that.

3:10 PM
so this is a joke, right?
-1
A: Is there a way to put a lot of things in a fridge in an easy way?

RyanI would say that if your fridge had removable shelves maybe you can take one out, pile it with stuff, and slide it back in? But that might be way more work than just being patient. Otherwise I would get your wife or friend to help you. Nothing quite like a well stocked fridge. Good luck!

@badp Erm... "obvious troll isn't so obvious"
That says enough, I would think.

Q: How does the scoring work for Hex Defense?

deft_codeI've completed all the levels on Hex Defense with my android phone. Now I'm replaying the levels going for high scores. However, I can't tell how the scores are calculated. It's pretty obvious that forcing the next wave to spawn early gives a point boost. But everything else is a mystery. P...

One flagger thinks it's aimed at hisself, one flagger thinks it's aimed at the asker, I think it's aimed at Strix, so no, that doesn't say enough
is it a joke or a serious answer?

It's a joke.
Strix is right, albeit quite undiplomatically.

a troll with 1000 rep, that's new

3:22 PM
@RonanForman a skilled troll

I should start trolling on StackOverflow.
Who would suspect a 20k+ user of trolling?

@Powerlord genius
say that again when you're at 1 rep again

@RonanForman That would take a LOT of downvotes.

it's -1 rep per downvote right

My SO rep is 23,842 and downvotes are -2 rep each.

3:26 PM
oh -1 to the voter

So, it'd take 11921 downvotes to reduce me to 1 rep there (since you can't go below 1)

Q: Will there be Alan Wake 2?

Mehper C. PalavuzlarDoes Remedy have any plans to produce Alan Wake 2? There are some rumors around but I couldn't find any official explanations about that.

what do you think of this game that's just anounced?

@Powerlord Or, you know, one suspension.

@ArdaXi I don't believe suspensions remove your rep.

3:27 PM
@Powerlord Suspensions put you at 1 rep, at least temporarily.

Yeah, but if you get permabanned it doesn't really matter what your rep is.

what will happen to the troll then?

@Brant Not perma
I don't really like this guy's answers anyway. Disabling UAC for any reason is bad advice, especially completely.

is that alan wake question off-topic?

@ArdaXi I always find it amusing when people do that. What exactly are they doing, running apps that are broken in respect to it?
@RonanForman I was going to comment about that. Specifically, I was going to point out that if there were an Alan Wake 2 that was announced, it'd be all over gaming news sites.

3:32 PM
@Powerlord Well, I have it disabled, but that's only because I'm responsible enough, and I can't develop properly with it on.

Speaking of UAC-broken apps, XFire was like that for the longest time.

If you can't figure out that disabling UAC helps by yourself, you shouldn't do it.

@ArdaXi Really? What exactly are you developing?

@Powerlord Nothing interesting, just some experiments mostly.

@ArdaXi Maybe I should ask why what you're developing needs administrative rights... or makes UAC think it does.

3:34 PM
@Powerlord Low-level WinAPI access.

HEY EVERYBODY, Arda's developing a virus! Don't install anything he sends you! ;)

Q: Xbox live acces online game

CsabiHi I m aboute to buy xbox360 and i need to know what must i buy or how much i have to pay to play game online.I thought if i buy a game with online content i can play, but now i found out that xbox live account i have to buy.how much it cost and how long it is?

Not really a virus. Related though.

@Bob Needs some serious work; might not be worth it if it's a dupe
It is, isn't it? The 'how much will it cost' question should be frequently asked

@GraceNote And flagging me on a 4 month old question is better?

3:37 PM
@ArdaXi So what your saying is that your terrible mod will be installed via Malware?

@LessPop_MoreFizz Well, no. It might be injected into the bitstream.
It's an APR PoC

Good afternoon all

@FallenAngelEyes Good after... well, it's still morning where I am, but... Hi!

Hehe, hiya

@Powerlord You're in the Bridge. It is always CET here.

3:39 PM
I wish it were afternoon here, it'd mean less hours until I go home.
@ArdaXi Suuuuure it is.

Yep.
So 16:42 to the minute.
Speaking of which, time to go to work. Bye.

Later o/

I hope Arda remembered his bacon.

mmm bacon

3DS is out in Japan tomorrow.

3:52 PM
Wow, so soon

@badp What do you mean by 'if you have another question to ask...' - it's clearly not an answer, point that out to him and explain that SE isn't a forum

@YiJiang corrected comment
I assume Perfectionist isn't an hidden achievement

Should take care of 'famous questions' like this, it clearly has Google juice

@YiJ We give unregistered users a hour to read the comment, then we delete those posts

and free bacon

3:58 PM
@badp I know, you mentioned that just now

Since people pay attention when you give them free bacon.

If they don't visit back in the hour we get the bacon.
(Typically, they don't.)

I feel stupid, I forgot to check out what the weekend sale was on Steam yesterday.

Q: Addressing game confirmations and release dates

Valve added another 3 maps to TF2 yesterday. I doubt they'd put the game on sale for that, but I wanted to check so I knew whether to harass @bap about getting the game or not. :D

4:00 PM
stares

Preferably before Saturday's Game On!

Can we add @powerlord's obbsesion about bacon to the room description?

Speaking of game release dates, less than a week until Beyond Good and Evil HD for Xbox Live and less than two months until Portal 2. :D

is beyond good and evil the one with the pig?

@RonanForman Yes.

4:04 PM
I've still never played Beyond Good and Evil

@Powerlord it could still be lots of games then

@FallenAngelEyes It's a fun game. I hear the PS3 release got pushed back for whatever reason, and they haven't announced a PC version of the HD release. :/

Curses. Well, I guess I'll pick it up on XBL then.

I almost want to describe BG&E as almost (3D) Zelda-like, but set it the future. Not a great description.

I've pretty much only ever heard good things about it.

4:07 PM
It's been a few years since I played it. I should play it again... but this time on the 360.
That also means I won't have to mess with ini files to get graphics working correctly on WinVista/Win7.

With forty-three sites and counting, there’s no shortage of communities needing attention. Thank goodness there’s also no shortage of enthusiastic users willing to volunteer their time to help their communities. But once in awhile a user stands out as truly exceptional. That’s why I am really excited to announce that Dori Smith has joined us as a full-time member of our community management team.

You may have seen Dori in her role as moderator of Ask Different, the Apple Stack Exchange, but she is also actively involved in the Programmers Stack Exchange, as well as Super User, English Language & Usage, and our own meta Stack Overflow. …

The Feeds.UltramaticQuestionSpitter was renamed Bob. Feeds.Blogz is still Feeds, it seems.

we have an xkcd feed?

@TimStone I still find that weird, as I didn't see the option on my own room of renaming the Feeds user... can only mods do that?
Maybe it's because my room only has one feed.

@TimStone Well, I don't have a Create User button next to a feed, so I'm guessing it's current.
Hmm, I should customize the map list for tomorrow's TF2 game to make sure we don't have any of the really huge maps... even though Frontier can be fun, it's just too large for 6-8 people.

Q: Where can I find a listing of games that run on iPhone 2G?

Sergio BoombasticI own an old iPhone 2G and most of the games I've tried to play open, and close immediately after launching. They tell me it's because the game doesn't support the older model. Where can I find a list of game that do run on the older 2G model?

Hey that's my question.
Any suggestion? I need some new games but it seems everything these days cannot run on 2G.

@SergioTapia can you not update to 3g for free?

4:26 PM
The Firmware you mean?

I'm using iOS 3.1

what games are these, i have 2g hardware and my apps run fine

@RonanForman For example, Gravonaut. It launches, the loading screen shotws, then it exits to the main screen.

@SergioTapia any free apps, I want to test this

4:35 PM
nope sorry :(
anyways, do you know of a list somewhere of 2g approved apps?

@SergioTapia no sorry :(

Figures... now that Win7SP1 is out, my office's IT dept is looking at moving out XP machines to Win7.

@Powerlord why's that bad?

@RonanForman It's not bad, they're just following the old adage "Don't upgrade Windows until SP1 is out."

Which makes sense in a business environment.

4:49 PM
or you can get an OS that isn't released with bugs... oh wait.

that doesn't exist.

@SergioTapia that was my point

Q: can i play civ 5 without steam installed??? any way possible!

ilyaOk, so let me start of by saying I am deployed. I was pretty excited when I found out that there's civ 5 for PC, and I ordered one. I waited for the game for over 3 weeks (mail takes that long to get here), and for past week I was running to post office everyday to see if it came in early. Today...

@Bob Major edit is looking for new soldiers!

Community has 17 good flags to go before it becomes Gaming's first Deputy. I have hopes that at least one of our living users will beat it to the punch.
3

Thing is, Community never sleeps
he might be dumb, but the quality metrics are very good on a no-code site like ours
@Powerlord It's mods only; the thing is mods currently can only create ad-hoc users for each feed. If I want the same 'bot' to handle more than one feed, I need a dev's assistance for now.

5:27 PM
Wait, doesn't that mean I'm ahead of Community?

barely.

True.

5:57 PM
Uh oh, Rift is live*! Better remove the "Cancel Subscription" button, competitors!

@Brant I thought Rift was only available now if you preordered it.

(* for preorderererers)

I've only played Rift at the lower levels, but it seemed like WoW, but with less classes, but each class has more choice as to which spells/abilities it has.
Oh, and adding in Warhammer's public quests.

Q: How do you manually attack objects or enemies in dungeon keeper 2?

David The ManI'm feeling a bit dumb here but I can't for the life of me figure out how you manually order units to attack enemies, for example an enemy tile or cannon (which does not belong to me). At the moment I can only make my units attack by placing them on my on tiles as near as the enemies as possible...

@Bob Hmm... been a while since I've played DK2. I would imagine it works like in Evil Genius, though, where you tag enemies you want attacked.
...but you can equip a well-spun hat in it if you play TF2 as well!

@Mana I'd look for official announcements and the like

@Mana Yah, its one of those things where if the answer is Yes, its a silly question, and if the answer is No, nobody knows for sure.
Here's one from four months ago gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/8965/…

That said I didn't really find a good source
so I'd have no problem converting my answer to a comment

Basically there was a bunch of speculation, and then when it was announced, all the answers were edited to say "Yes"

6:13 PM
@bwarner Hm, sold.
Converted to comment and closed.

@badp you know what's a good reason for the 'lack' of questions on Gaming?
I can't find anything to watch on Gametrailers!

I feel bad about ilya and his Civ 5 situation. Its one of those situations where "If you buy a game and then pirate it to get it to run, is that still bad?" But I also don't think its a good idea to be telling deployed soldiers to go looking for hacked versions of games and/or Steam.

@IvoFlipse raises eyebrow

and I almost applied for a job as game testers @guerilla, but luckily I came to my senses :P
though I'd love to play Killzone 3

I can't imagine being a game tester... having to replay the same levels over... and over... and OVER.

6:22 PM
I wonder if the billions of dollars that Blizzard has raked in on WoW and Starcraft has made it harder for other games to be successful. Have they increased the pool of gamers, or just monopolized the expenditures of the existing pool?

@bwarner If anything, their success has created too many copycats that think they can just copy WoW and be successful.

@Powerlord Yah, I'm alpha-testing a game right now. Its kind of fun playing for 30-60 minutes each day and writing a few bug reports. But I can't imagine doing it for 8 hours five days a week.

Without apparently realizing that they have to introduce new concepts, not ones that WoW stole and refined themselves.

And also a large audience that thinks that anyone using common MMO gameplay tropes is immediately "trying to rip off WoW"
@bwarner I love QA testing, myself. Dunno why really. I just enjoy it.

WoW also took several steps forward in MMO UIs (and for that matter, RTS UIs) that everyone else seems to be copying.

6:25 PM
@Powerlord I would have expected to be able to school myself in other things next to the QA part, especially since I do have some experience with gait analysis, so 3D modelling isn't that far off ;)
@FallenAngelEyes I like QA testing too, too bad it's not always appreciated as much :(

I just get this sense of satisfaction in finding stuff that's broken and helping to fix it so a quality product can be released.

what most of the other games lack too, is a reputation of making games that don't suck, having 'lore' that just sticks with the gamers and at least 3 RTSs to built up a community who likes your games

Blizzard also steals the ideas of people who mod WoW and incorporates them back into the main game. I mean, remember back when WoW just had one action bar and you had to hit an arrow to see the other pages? Now you can put 5 on the screen at once.

hehe, too bad you're not a programmer @FallenAngelEyes, else I could use you ;)

Hell, even the "Craft all" button was originally a UI mod back during the closed beta

6:27 PM
I don't like QAing my own development, I doubt I'd enjoy it much more if it was someone else's. Even for games, Good Testing != playing.

@Brant First time I played WoW was open beta, so I didn't know that. :P

I read it somewhere.
I actually had a closed beta account... I played a mage up until level 5 or something then got bored
So I sold the account on eBay.
For $300.

WoW also introduced the idea of loot lag. Good thing other games didn't copy THAT one.

@Ivo Haha, sorry! The only thing I'm good at doing CompSci wise is front-end testing, like judging whether or not crap is located intuitively on a webpage or something. :(

eBay banned me, but it was so worth it

6:29 PM
well that's also important @FallenAngelEyes

Yeah, but I dunno how to find a job by saying "Hey, look, I'm great at breaking things! :D"

tell me about it

Hell, I even remember in WoW when the quest text used to scroll. Now it appears instantly, with a summary of what you need to do at the bottom. Oh, and WoW also stole Warhammer's "red circle around the quest area on the map" thing.

I just decided to start making crappy things instead

@FallenAngelEyes As long as you can tell people how to fix it. I hate when people say my UI isn't usable, but then can't give any ideas on how to fix it.

6:30 PM
hahaha

I forget if it's red in WoW or not, but eh.

@bwarner You need better testers then. :( That's not helpful at all...
o_o
...These are the Magicka patch notes
"A little treat has been added to the game.
You can now play as the Mea Culpa wizard, wielding a powerful The bug staff and the less powerful Broken Sword.
A new magick in the same theme has also been added...the unholy Crash to Desktop.

P.S. Warcraft 2's right-click to attack / move / repair context action is one of the biggest leaps forward in RTS controls ever.

@Powerlord I don't know which came first, but there was a WoW UI mod that did that before Blizzard added it to the game

what I dread more is that my 'beta' testers will tell me that the lack of a certain feature is a bug :P

6:33 PM
Even if someone were to come up with a new MMO that had some great features that WoW lacked, Blizzard could easily just add them in next upgrade. And it would cost them about 1,000 times less than it cost the company that made the new MMO.

@Brant Not sure. I know there were addons that helped you do quests closer to you before farther away ones, but I didn't remember ones that actually drew it on the map.
@bwarner That depends on what you mean by features. Clearly, UI changes are easy to copy.

@IvoFlipse Yah that sucks too. Get 20 people together, and they will each have their own "Can't ship without it" enhancement

I'm now making some piece of software that I could have easily made for my previous employer, but just the fact that others would have a say in what I would be making, probably ruins the whole thing in the first place

WoW's battlegrounds are still instanced... one thing Warhammer did that was different was have part of the map that was always PvP.
In addition to the previously mentioned public quests in the non-PvP areas.

I hope I won't have to sit in any design meetings any time soon

6:36 PM
Guild Wars 2 could be interesting if they actually manage to pull off the features they have been claiming they will have. And not having a monthly fee means that even people that are committed to an existing MMO could be willing to buy it.

@bwarner I don't recall what features those are supposed to be.

Broken Toys is a great blog to follow if you're interested in the general state of the MMO industry, btw.

do you know how long it took me to stop reading WowInsider every 5 minutes?
I think I'd rather not read it :P

Things like quests that you don't go looking for, they just happen and everyone that is around gets to participate together, without having to group up and such. I think WoW might have some of those ocassionally, I haven't played for several years. But they're making it sounds like a major part of GW2.

Nah, it's way more general than "here's a rumor about WoW's next patch!" stuff
Actually, do you remember Lum The Mad? Same guy.

6:39 PM
@bwarner That sounds a lot like Warhammer's public quests and Rift's rift things.

I'm still surprised Warhammer online hasn't gone free to play. Free for the first 10 levels means that people just level up to 10 and then go to fight in the world PvP zone.

The trick is to keep them fresh, so its not like "2:30 PM, time to go to town X for event Y, then we proceed to town Z at 3:30..."

Hm. The flag and add comment buttons on Gaming aren't working for me.
I'll try clearing my cache I guess, probably internet issues.

maybe those buttons are on cooldown?

6:41 PM
@Brant "Complaints about the low number of high-end raids released with this expansion paled next to the roar of millions of new goblins and worgen rushing through the revamped introductory zones as swiftly as they can, so that they could get to the endgame of high-end raids that they could complain about. " <-- I loled

@bwarner I want GW2 so badly

@FallenAngelEyes Me too

I will be all over that game.

I was originally pretty excited about SWOR due to the Bioware + Star Wars combo, but all the footage I've seen looks kind of unexceptional

Right now I'm working on titles in GW1 so I can carry them over.
@sjohnston same :/

6:43 PM
Well, clearing my cache worked, although the thing I was going to flag is now gone

I really like Bioware's products and such
But I don't have a lot of personal investment in the SW IP, so I'm kind of eh
and yeah, the more videos came out, the more eh it started looking
GW2 seems like they're really trying to push the envelope of MMO's and bring something new to the table

Star Wars done right is fantastic. Star Wars done wrong is depressing. Unfortunately, there has been a lot of both

But yeah, I follow the ArenaNet blog and any GW2 news pretty obsessively

@FallenAngelEyes Yes, if nothing else I want to support the effort of trying to innovate. The fact that it looks fun is, of course, a big bonus

I was honestly a little afraid for a while that it would be vaporware

6:45 PM
@sjohnston Star Wars Galaxies started at one of those and quickly slid to the other! Well... OK... you can argue it was never truely "done right".

Because it was announced in... 2007 originally, iirc. But there was no info for so long.
And then in 2010, it was like publicitygasm~

@Powerlord Wasn't a lot of that due to a buyout and/or poor management decisions?

So I'm really excited that there is actual gameplay footage and everything and that the game is actually coming out \o/

Speaking of SWOR earlier, I'm not sure I like the entire idea of different classes having different quests... basically, it means a group of different class people will essentially be completing one person's quest at a time.

Matrix online is another MMO I have heard was great until the company was bought out and drained into a lifeless husk

6:46 PM
@sjohnston Yeaaaah pretty much :(
MxO was my first MMO
and is the reason I even started playing MMO's
The closed beta community was amazing
...and then they split us all up into 9 servers with like no notice for release
and then Sony took over
sigh
I have a lots of good memories from it though. I used to DJ for the player-run radio station. :)

@sjohnston Poor management decisions, yes. To my knowledge, SWG has always been run by SOE and LucasArts... although I heard executive meddling on the LucasArts side is why SWG is the way it is now.

@Powerlord Sounds like the classic problem of splitting dev time horizontally rather than vertically. Multiply development time without increasing gameplay time for the individual (assuming you're not a 10-alt sort of person).
@Powerlord I have no experience with the game, but I remember reading some article that explained how initially you had to go through a very difficult process to become a Jedi, and people were justifiably proud when they achieved that. Then it was revamped to be a standard class (or something like that). And the people who had put in the effort beforehand were understandably pissed.
@FallenAngelEyes It's sad too, because sci-fi MMOs seem to have a tough time, and that's another viable property essentially wasted.

@sjohnston Originally, no one knew how to become a Jedi. Then they released some knowledge about how you had to become a master in an unknown number of random classes (of the game's 35) to become a Jedi. Then they released the Holocron item that would tell you all but the last class you needed to complete to become a Jedi.

@sjohnston Yeah. :/ I'd love a good scifi and/or cyberpunk MMO

Then they changed it so you could do a set of long quests to become a Jedi... then they changed everything and made it so you could start as a Jedi.

6:53 PM
@FallenAngelEyes I've tried a few, because I really want to like a sci-fi MMO, but they've all been just awful. Eve is perhaps the exception, but you have to be the sort of person that enjoys 3D spreadsheet management simulations for more than a month, and that's just not me.

I just don't have a lot of interest in high fantasy-themed MMO's anymore
@sjohnston Same

and when I say "changed everything" they eliminated the free-form class system and made it so you had to choose one of 9 professions... oh, and changed how combat worked. You know, just game altering changes.

I tried Anarchy Online way back but I dunno, I couldn't get into it
I tried Neocron briefly as well, but same there too, plus it's mostly a very small, dedicated population.

If I start a new MMO, it's likely to be one that's currently Free to Play.

Jumpgate Evolution looks kind of cool
But I haven't heard anything about it in a while
I'm kind of depressed about this, but I realized I just don't have the time to dedicate to seriously playing an MMO anymore, not the kind that requires raiding and stuff at least. :/
I played Aion for a while, mostly because I really, really liked what they'd done with their Assassin class and I'd wanted to play a game with some endgame in it.
But I got a really bad concussion last year and I had to stop playing videogames for about 2 months and I never went back.
