on this question, I had the alternator seize on my '91 Suburban one time. The serpentine belt held just fine as the seized alt killed the engine, dead stop ... no complaints (belt didn't make a noise). While that's not stopping an entire car, I was quite surprised it killed the engine ... and while I was driving down the road. A good serpentine belt can handle quite a bit of torque. Sure handled my 350-V8 engine easy
