driving technique question, so asking here: how do you avoid wobbly steering in a hard corner with a 3-point restraint, in a manual where you may need to shift in the corner so can't i.e. stuff your foot into the floor to brace
so basically, the situation was I was cornering and shifting to accelerate out at the same time
and slid all the way to the door and felt like I was just hanging on by the steering wheel, which is obviously not ideal since it's... steering
The no-buck technique is to cinch the three point belt tightly and then give it a yank. That will hold you in place across the beltline but can be uncomfortable across the chest. There are fairly cheap options that act as a cinch clamp for just the belt portion.
The reality, though, is that a three point restraint can’t hold hold you in place in all directions.
@Ceshion if you don't want a 4 or 5 point harness, a bucket seat makes the world of difference. A good recaro will not let you move an inch sideways! That's what I had in my Litchfield and it meant I could corner as hard as I liked without sliding sideways
@Ceshion So.. You can convert an ELS into an ALS. Scrap that technobabble... You can pull the belt out all the way, ALL the way, and let it retract. Move the seat back a little bit and jerk the belt until it locks. Snug the belt up tight (locked) and move the seat forward. Now you are in zombie racecar puckylips mode. Go get groceries with a vengeance. OR... you can buy a DOT rated belt system (3,4,5 point) that has no windy reels and really play. (google SABELT)
Of course your passengers will fear you (even additionally moreso) but who cares? I ran a Merkur XR4ti for years with that setup. But giving Rory the nod, that car came stock with seats made by Recaro. Butt, belt, seat, tight. When you can't breathe it's just right.
@JPhi1618 cheers... I was starting to get a bit frustrated by it, I get the sense that he was going to be arguing black was white no matter what I said and he seemed to be taking it oddly personally so I think I'm going to walk away from that one
@BobCross I tried that in theory, but I haven't gotten to see how well it actually holds up to... spirited driving, yet
@RoryAlsop I would be happy with putting in a different seat, with a harness, but the general consensus I've seen is A. it'd be hard to find one that would fit and B. it wouldn't be safe in the event of a rollover because of the Sky being a soft top
The explanation I heard in the context of stock seats is that the lap belt is the most important part. If your hips aren’t sliding, you’ll feel much more solid.
@SteveRacer unfortunately (in this case) the Sky doesn't use a ratcheting system on the belt locks, it just locks once if you pull on it-- if you pull it out all the way, it'll just reel back in normally
but, the idea of pulling the seat back before tightening seems to be good for it
@BobCross makes sense, I'll have to see how it does c:
once I get the coupe top though, I can start thinking about what I can do in terms of a semi-detachable harness, i.e. use the stock belt when I have the soft top on, use the harness with the hard top
but since switching the tops out is a labor-intensive project as is, I can always just count on needing to bolt/unbolt the harness
speaking of, ^
it just replaces the trunk deck and latches into the same spot as the soft top in the front, and it looks pretty nice imo
@Ceshion actually it might not.. I'm not especially knowledgeable about the regs over there but wouldn't a removable hard top have significantly less structural strength than an integrated roof? and therefore offer less rollover protection?
cool.. yeah I can imagine different venues having different requirements, the trick is to have a solution that works for the majority of places you'd want to take it
@Ceshion yeah selling/closing the Saturn brand was part of the deal they worked out for the bailout with Congress back in '08 - not sure whether it was their idea or the Gov's but either way that's what kicked it off, they tried to sell it (can't remember who to) but it fell through so they just rolled it up into GM proper and that was that.
@Ceshion you do realize you would then be obliged to film this and put it on youtube right?
Man, I just got my highest voted comment (I think). +101 right now.
There's a reason that "smoking jacket" is an actual type of clothing. People didn't want their nice suit having a heavy smoke smell. — JPhi161823 hours ago
I find the smell of cigarette smoke quite nauseating, so I was one of those who was really glad when the ban on smoking in enclosed public spaces came in
I'm seeing auto-darkening welding helmets selling for barely more than the price of a conventional mask. But I also rarely see professional welders using auto-darkening hoods. Is there a reason for that?
As an amateur welder I find it tricky to setup on a weld, drop my mask, and then strike a ...
A factory part breaks or wears out.
Independant shops I have used insist on replacing with the same OEM part when reputable aftermarket parts are available at less cost.
Given hard evidence of particular factory part unreliability is in hand, it seems logical to replace with a part from a second ...
