driving technique question, so asking here: how do you avoid wobbly steering in a hard corner with a 3-point restraint, in a manual where you may need to shift in the corner so can't i.e. stuff your foot into the floor to brace
so basically, the situation was I was cornering and shifting to accelerate out at the same time
and slid all the way to the door and felt like I was just hanging on by the steering wheel, which is obviously not ideal since it's... steering

1:52 AM
The no-buck technique is to cinch the three point belt tightly and then give it a yank. That will hold you in place across the beltline but can be uncomfortable across the chest. There are fairly cheap options that act as a cinch clamp for just the belt portion.
The reality, though, is that a three point restraint can’t hold hold you in place in all directions.

2:11 AM
@BobCross - True that.

@Ceshion if you don't want a 4 or 5 point harness, a bucket seat makes the world of difference. A good recaro will not let you move an inch sideways! That's what I had in my Litchfield and it meant I could corner as hard as I liked without sliding sideways
Me, that is... not the car...it slid wonderfully

8:09 AM
@Ceshion So.. You can convert an ELS into an ALS. Scrap that technobabble... You can pull the belt out all the way, ALL the way, and let it retract. Move the seat back a little bit and jerk the belt until it locks. Snug the belt up tight (locked) and move the seat forward. Now you are in zombie racecar puckylips mode. Go get groceries with a vengeance. OR... you can buy a DOT rated belt system (3,4,5 point) that has no windy reels and really play. (google SABELT)
Of course your passengers will fear you (even additionally moreso) but who cares? I ran a Merkur XR4ti for years with that setup. But giving Rory the nod, that car came stock with seats made by Recaro. Butt, belt, seat, tight. When you can't breathe it's just right.

8:40 AM
@JPhi1618 cheers... I was starting to get a bit frustrated by it, I get the sense that he was going to be arguing black was white no matter what I said and he seemed to be taking it oddly personally so I think I'm going to walk away from that one

@BobCross I tried that in theory, but I haven't gotten to see how well it actually holds up to... spirited driving, yet
@RoryAlsop I would be happy with putting in a different seat, with a harness, but the general consensus I've seen is A. it'd be hard to find one that would fit and B. it wouldn't be safe in the event of a rollover because of the Sky being a soft top

Like Rory said, if you have the right seat, it can work pretty well. The side bolsters in my car are pretty supportive so it works quite well.

so maybe when I get my coupe top?

The explanation I heard in the context of stock seats is that the lap belt is the most important part. If your hips aren’t sliding, you’ll feel much more solid.

@SteveRacer unfortunately (in this case) the Sky doesn't use a ratcheting system on the belt locks, it just locks once if you pull on it-- if you pull it out all the way, it'll just reel back in normally
but, the idea of pulling the seat back before tightening seems to be good for it
@BobCross makes sense, I'll have to see how it does c:
once I get the coupe top though, I can start thinking about what I can do in terms of a semi-detachable harness, i.e. use the stock belt when I have the soft top on, use the harness with the hard top
but since switching the tops out is a labor-intensive project as is, I can always just count on needing to bolt/unbolt the harness
speaking of, ^
it just replaces the trunk deck and latches into the same spot as the soft top in the front, and it looks pretty nice imo

@Ceshion yep..that looks pretty darn swish

1:25 PM
and it seems like it'd be sufficient to avoid roll bar requirements
since it's basically no longer a convertible at that point

@Ceshion actually it might not.. I'm not especially knowledgeable about the regs over there but wouldn't a removable hard top have significantly less structural strength than an integrated roof? and therefore offer less rollover protection?

I'm not sure, one of the tracks near here that I looked up specifically stated removable hard top as an alternative to a roll bar
but then the drag strip nearby requires roll bars conditional on quarter mile time (mine wouldn't need it right now)
they start requiring them at 11.5

cool.. yeah I can imagine different venues having different requirements, the trick is to have a solution that works for the majority of places you'd want to take it

exactly!
Also, I wonder if I can fit a roll cage any better with that top? I know they don't fit well with the stock one

1:45 PM
@Ceshion are you thinking a full or half cage?

there's not exactly a choice, a half roll cage would basically just be a single set of bars, at one point of the car (just for fitment reasons)
so I'd have to go full
full, bolt-in I think
also it'd be kind of sweet because I could cage in the sides and then just open the top to get in and out
like a hatch
or do it the old-fashioned way, through the window

@Ceshion that looks nice, but I have no idea what it is. I'd guess Nissan... what is it?

It's a Sky with a semi-fixed hard top
(now only $4200)

@Ceshion what's a Sky - who makes that?
I don't think we have them here

Saturn, they only made like 34,000 of them
also the Opel GT, same car

1:55 PM
Ahh - Opel I know. Saturn is a manufacturer I had never heard of
I saw the first pics on the Opel GT page - wow: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opel_GT

haha, it's the 2007-10 version

@RoryAlsop it was a sub-brand of GM, (originally started by ex GM management before GM bought them out IIRC), GM killed the brand back in 2009
@Ceshion lol Dukes of Hazzard style!

too bad, I would have bought a 2017 Saturn Sky
@motosubatsu exactly!

@Ceshion yeah selling/closing the Saturn brand was part of the deal they worked out for the bailout with Congress back in '08 - not sure whether it was their idea or the Gov's but either way that's what kicked it off, they tried to sell it (can't remember who to) but it fell through so they just rolled it up into GM proper and that was that.
@Ceshion you do realize you would then be obliged to film this and put it on youtube right?

@motosubatsu okay, but I'm not going anywhere near that dynamite

2:09 PM
@Ceshion sounds fair

And, I have to pull the engine back out of the G35 and swap the heads with the ones from the original engine. Woo-freaking-hoo.

@DavidLively what happened there?

Man, I just got my highest voted comment (I think). +101 right now.
There's a reason that "smoking jacket" is an actual type of clothing. People didn't want their nice suit having a heavy smoke smell. — JPhi1618 23 hours ago

4:09 PM
@JPhi1618 103 already!
I like that most of the comments and answers are "You stink. Stop doing the thing that makes you stink"

@NickC, yea, I didn't think it was that big of a deal when I made the comment. People like it tho.

I find the smell of cigarette smoke quite nauseating, so I was one of those who was really glad when the ban on smoking in enclosed public spaces came in

And I don't really know another solution... May not be what he wanted, but if the problem is "you stink" the solution is "stop stinking"...
Me too... I grew up with parents that smoked constantly. After I moved out, I never wanted to be around it again.

@JPhi1618 - I thought there was a badge for a highly voted on comment, but looks like I was mistaken.

There is a badge for having multiple comments voted on.
Like 10 comments with +5 or something.
I have in on Mech, I think.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2, I was thinking of this...

4:56 PM
@Zaid, this seems like something you'd be in to - mechanics.stackexchange.com/q/50004/12030
Have you seen it?
You seem to like experimental stuff for the sake of learning.

@JPhi1618 is he using it as a compressor?

Yea, that's what it looks like. Driving the "motor" just to compress air.
And he wants to work at a low RPM, which I think is a lot of the issue.
And engine that can generate pressure and hold it for sub 1000ths of a second might not be great at holding that pressure for 5-10 ms...

So he's trying to use it as a reciprocating compressor
The usual culprits need checking
Piston rings
Valve timing
Head gasket

Yea, he seems to think the valve seats are an issue, but I don't know if he has evidence or just suspicion.

Well he does put some numbers down, so I don't think he's a noob
What I fail to see is why he thinks it should be putting out 70 bar

Q: Why don't all welders use auto-darkening hoods?

feetwetI'm seeing auto-darkening welding helmets selling for barely more than the price of a conventional mask. But I also rarely see professional welders using auto-darkening hoods. Is there a reason for that? As an amateur welder I find it tricky to setup on a weld, drop my mask, and then strike a ...

Two things:
1) This seems *very opinion based* in nature.
2) Does this even pertain to MVM&R?

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2, while I agree with you, I think I should get upvotes before it is closed ;)
I almost didn't answer because of the reasons you listed.

@JPhi1618 - Haha! You'll never catch me, but you can keep on trying ;-)

Q: Shop preference for OEM parts, why?

SteveScottAzA factory part breaks or wears out. Independant shops I have used insist on replacing with the same OEM part when reputable aftermarket parts are available at less cost. Given hard evidence of particular factory part unreliability is in hand, it seems logical to replace with a part from a second ...

This one is very opinion based as well (yah, sorry JPhi1618, lol!)

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 What can I say - I'm an opinionated guy.
That last one is at least more on topic.

Haha! Nice :)

But, yea, not great.

@JPhi1618 - agreed ...
