6:00 PM
This was also Loudon before it because what it is today. This was back when it was just Bryar..
Turn 4 was even named "Charlie's Corner". lol
Seemed appropriate.. It wasn't named for me, but I was almost killed there... lol

@cdunn, I misread that answer and thought you said "does it taste burned".

@cdunn Wow, what happened?

That was the day I realized my hobby was playing in traffic and I needed a new one...
Was a drivers school, I was positioned drivers left across from the flag stand. Airline pilot who was learning trailing throttle oversteer decked it one corner before mine and instead of making the corner he just went straight faster..

ran into you?

I had my egress planned, ducked behind the tiny wall (would only have slowed him down a little) and past the outside of the 8 foot deep hole behind the wall.
The path was only 18 in wide, and I could my whites on the ragged top of the chain link fence, and fell into the hole with the pricker bushes. Couldn't get out, and all I could hear was the sound if that guy's Toyota crashing into things.

6:03 PM
that's pretty scary stuff

Turned out he missed the hole I was in by about 3 feet. and the sound was him crashing through the fence and hitting the boulder meant to protect the crowd..

track workers seem to get killed every year somewhere on the planet

It was only about 30 minutes after it all happened when I realized what had actuallyhappened and then I couldn't stop shaking...
Yup, that year one was killed in Ohio. Formula Atlantic went airborn and landed on him..

I know that feeling well. Can't tell you how many times I sat on the side of the road with my hands shaking.
You watch GP2 or F1?

It's wierd, I get through the actual sitaution just fine. It's after when I have time to think that my knees go weak..

6:05 PM
same here

Not a lot.. Not the same after flagging.. There you are RIGHT in the thick of it

fine while it unfolds, shivering with adrenalin afterwards.

SCCA GT1 Corvettes.. You don't hear them coming, your entire body vibrates with the sound
Yup, exactly

I have quite a few friends that do SCCA
fun to watch for sure

had one guy lunch his motor right in front of me. I was blue flagging near the track edge and the entire contents of his cank case got spilled pretty much at my feet through his side pipe..
I egressed before anyone went for a slide... lol
I used to be a scrutineer as well. That was fun!
I was inspecting the year "Spin" Lewicky was racing Formula V... LMAO

6:08 PM
When my kid raced I did scrutineering for WERA

Guy ran 1000 year old slicks.. Even in the rain...
So you know how much fun that is. Get to talk to some great people and go all through some amazing cars

his was bikes but yes

Sorry, I have no idea what WERA is... lol

it's just a bike version of SCCA

It's been 3 decades since my last involvement... Life happened along the way

6:09 PM
kinda
it's semi-pro

Oh, sounds like fun!

gottamakesomedonuts brb

kk tyt
I should probably do something productive for the next hour or so.. leaving early today.. got enough hours so I can end the week early.. yay! :)

@DucatiKiller, Here's a hat for you...

lol

6:11 PM
@JPhi1618 I will wear it with pride

Came back to New England by plane after being in GA. I had 3 dozen KK donuts with me on the plane for a friend back home. Guy offered me $50 for them on the spot... lol

Kinda cracks me up to see bible stories over on Skeptics.SE.

Q: Was the Earth one big ocean once?

user32154Many people believe that Earth was one big ocean at some point in its past. During Noah’s time the earth was completely covered with water. There are many other examples, not all related to Noah. See here, here, here, here and so on. Is that true? I'd also be interested to know when this...

Just seems wrong.

@JPhi1618 heh....good one.
@JPhi1618 you check out the site stats?

I haven't had a chance to really explore.
I've glanced at them - seems like a lot of cool data.

did you have access to this stuff before?
or did you just get access to it?

6:26 PM
I could see that page. Maybe not everything, but I could see a lot if not all.

gotcha
I really want to understand a chicken and the egg situation
and maybe at some point you could look
it's whether traffic drives votes or votes drive traffic. I'll leave it at that for now. too involved. Just wanted to drop that into your melon to ponder for later.

@DucatiKiller views drive both

@Zaid yes, that's what I believe but I've believed things before that turned out to be more nuanced than I anticipated.

Hey, whats up. should have a couple minutes to kill here and see what this place is all about

6:44 PM
Not much. We kind of talk about random stuff, how to improve the site and discuss questions.
What's your interest in motor vehicle maintenence, @rpmerf?

@rpmerf What's up man? How's it going?

@cdunn, I'd throw an image in that question of a cantilevered frame and an "older" style frame.
3
For teh +1's...

@cdunn That's good advice from JPH....more rep with pics...we've proven that one

@JPhi1618 Pics, me? Well I suppose... lol
Oh yes, some of my highest rated answers are the ones with pics

I hope it's easier than the method for measuring the transmission fluid level in the newer Toyotas. That requires $400 in tools, a lift, and a scanner to do it right. And it takes the better part of 30 to 45 minutes. Just to measure the transmission fluid level... — cdunn 9 mins ago
@cdunn - Yes, just about the same. I know the basic premise for measuring it, but I'm looking for the specifics.

6:51 PM
@rpmerf hey there! Glad you could stop by!

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2, I know that my VW transmission service is one of the only things I took my car to the dealer for...
It involves a lot of work.

As far as I can tell, you have to plug in VAGCom to get the specific transmission fluid temperature, then keeping the vehicle level, run the vehicle until the transmission is warm, then popping the plug and seeing if tranny fluid comes out. If it doesn't, it could need more. If it does, let it drain as long as the temp doesn't go over a certain temperature. Oh, and adding fluid requires a special tool as well, which plugs into the bottom of the pan where the plug goes.
@JPhi1618 - I'm sure it's exactly the same, considering it's all VAG

Right, that's what I'm thinking. I'm talking about the 50k DSG service...
I didn't know even checking the fluid was so hard.

Q: Why is there a trend towards cantilevered rear wheels in recent motorcycle designs?

cdunnIn looking at the new motorcycle designs that are coming out in roughly the last decade or so, there seems to be a trend towards the cantilevered rear wheel. My question is what are the advantages to this design?

Isn't this a dupe?

But I guess in a sealed system it doesn't need to be easy.

6:55 PM
@JPhi1618 - But that you can check it doesn't necessarily make it sealed, does it?

This swingarm question is related: mechanics.stackexchange.com/q/17393/12030

@Zaid For the Toyota it's worse than that. Same idea, but you need a special tool to draw a vacuum on the tranny pan before opening the plug. Then there is a similar straw like device, etc, etc.. I know how to do it for Toyota, but not for Audi, that's why I didn't answer the question..

@JPhi1618 That swingarm answer is one of my faves from early on here.

@cdunn - You got @Zaid on the noggin' today? LOL!
I can see how you'd mix up our avatars, though.
;-)

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Have you read back in chat to see our HNQ hack with the sinking car question?

6:59 PM
@DucatiKiller - I helped participate.

It worked out pretty good for everyone. Over 1200 rep and 9 badges collectively.
oh crap

I doubt I've read all of it.
haha, nice

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 yeah, I has brain.. Got that all wrong.. lol sorry about that..
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 yeah, that might be a dupe.. I didn't have the right search term as I didn't know they were called swing arm suspensions

@cdunn I think it's "I haz brains" Who taught you English anyways?

@cdunn - My Rotary Head Brother ... You are just being poked in the ribs.

7:02 PM
@DucatiKiller Yoda School of Diction :)

TURBO YODA!!!

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I know :) I felt the tug at the end of my leg lol

@cdunn, you went pretty old on the old pic!

it's all good :)
We were talking CB750's earlier, so I had to drag it out..

Nice

7:03 PM
greetings troopers

Hey @Darth_Vader

Greets Lord Vader :)

My first email address was dvader@eramp.net

I knew you were here.. I felt a disturbance in the transmission fluid...

Greetings My Lord

7:05 PM
I saw Paul's transmission question I was curious if someone ever asked if transmission fluid should be checked when the engine is running but I dont see that in the tag

For Toyota anyway the car is running at idle with the tranny fluid at a specific temp range.

@JPhi1618 ya, I saw you found that fuel-pump question.. would have helped if the question was tagged with fuel pump at first because that was the tag I was looking through =P

It makes a huge difference if the car is recent or not.. If it has a dipstick, none of that applies..

@cdunn I was taught tranny fluid is best checked when the vehicle was running

@Darth_Vader - I don't think I've ever seen a car have the auto tranny fluid checked while cold ... but I guess there's always a first time for everything.
@Darth_Vader - Yah, running and up to temp.

7:07 PM
This guy needs help.
I'm gonna do it again, just to be sure. Let my engine idle in neutral for a few minutes, check the color, rub fluid between fingers, wipe stick, dip and check level...right? — Nathaniel Davidson 9 mins ago

reminds me when someone did some transmission work and left the car in gear on the rack and couldnt figure out why it wouldnt budge then got out, filled the fluid... BAMMM car goes screaming across the shop and into another car.

@Darth_Vader True, although for my antique running or not doesn't seem to matter, only the temp
@Darth_Vader omg, that's hilarious, as long as no one got hurt.. lol

@cdunn ya no one got hurt

36.5xx hotness points

I remember a lot of classical stupid decisions.

7:09 PM
Never occurred to the guy that he should shut the car off? lol

@DucatiKiller on the question?

I'm still reeling from yesterdays example of that M5 guy doing a clutch swap with the car leaning precariously on some piled up bricks...

@cdunn - Pictures or it didn't happen.

@cdunn see, thats when I think it's ok to say "I F'd up" isnt considered cussing or out of contex, because frankly.. you did

It's a YouTube video. let me find the link..

7:10 PM
Please!
:D

@cdunn yes please do

It's in here in yesterdays log.. looking now

BMW on bricks?

we should have a Friday, worst automotive idea contest on meta..

7:12 PM
LOL!

@JPhi1618 image didn't load for me..
"Image not found"

@cdunn you must be behind a firewall

I am VERY behind a firewall...

Not the automotive one, lol

The index into the video is like 0:15. Really early on
Hey @Zaid Paulster was looking for our favorite M5 guy changing his clutch.. :)

7:13 PM
BMW on pile of bricks that was way to big:

lol

@Zaid i was having a conversation with my son about that clutch spring tool.. He was guessing $30 to $40, I guessed more like $500.. I can't find it online. Any ideas what it might be called?
@JPhi1618 Damn, I wonder if that's the M5 guys next jack stand replacement right there

@cdunn I guess you could look on ecstuning.com

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 In that video you can hear him say: Safety first as he rocks the thing back and forth as it sways back and forth 6in while he does it... lol

I was wondering if he was actually being facetious?

7:16 PM
@Zaid Ok, let me look... Any ideas what it's called? Clutch finger compression tool?
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I think he was serious lol but who knows

for what, @cdunn?

holy cow.. that thing is like a rockin horse...

Guy in the video had big balls of brass and steel.

Is that a joke video?

No it isn't

7:17 PM
@JPhi1618 yes

In that video he uses a special tool to compress the clutch fingers so he can properly tighten the bolts on I think the clutch housing. I was trying to find out how much they cost..

He can afford an M5, but cannot afford to go down to HF and pay $30 for a pair of jack stands?

@JPhi1618 Yeah, it's no joke.. Guys got 2000+ posts on some M5 site and is considered a guru on them... just not on safety...

And then he puts a worn out (heat warped) flywheel back onto his engine?

Wow.

7:18 PM
LMAO @Zaid What did I say when I saw that... Exactly what Paulster just said... I couldn't believe what that guy did and then got under his car...

hey all, good times. Happy Friday. Off tomakemoredonuts Catch you all soon.

@cdunn your estimate's closer
~ $320

Yea, @cdunn won that round.

There we go, thanks @Zaid

7:20 PM
WHAT AN IDIOT.

Is the music more helpful than an actual description of what's happening?

My son loves BMW's, I have no problem their great cars, I just want him to be prepared for what it costs to fix them..
I was wondering about the music... He points to things but who cares, TELL us about it.. lol

@cdunn - I couldn't agree more.

@cdunn It's actually not that bad. You just need deep pockets and deeper reserves of patience :)

@JPhi1618 My son is 19.. I'll take my vistories where I can get them.. lmao

7:21 PM
Yea, TALK in the video. If I want to listen to that music I can mute you and do that.

And then he's driving down the street like an idiot because he's got a radar detector.
Was that a dual mass flywheel in the M5?

Doubt it

I heard that in the video.. Not to mention when he runs the engine without the exhaust.. I bet his neighbors loved that...

I just got to that part.

@cdunn - Oh, we could hash on this guy for a while.

7:22 PM
He had jack stands when replacing the exhaust?

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 he does provide lots of material lol

ROFL! Yes

ikr!! Why didn't he use them in the begining?

Maybe they were in the back with rocks in the front?

Guess he wanted to go higher than the stands would go

7:23 PM
I think that's probably it @cdunn

Here's a silly question, so I want to go higher than the stands will allow. in the past I used concrete paving squares that are much bigger than the full size of the stand base. So there's one piece under the stand. Is that dangerous?
Could be concrete be too brittle and split leaving me flat?

@cdunn Sounds like a question for the site

Seems safe to me. Better than rubble from a landscaping project.

I'd love to know

I'll go add it now :)

7:26 PM
"How can I get higher?"
Lol

Great title.
HNQ for sure.

@cdunn - If it is flat to flat (ground to block), it should be fine. I'd put a chunk of wood (2x4 or whatever) between the jack stand and the block.

There's a clickbait title if I ever saw one

Wood to even out the point loads is Pro

I want the 6mins back I spent watching that video

7:27 PM
@JPhi1618 - If you mean to spread out the load points, exactly

@cdunn if you do use that title, tell them that recreational drugs are off limits

New nickname - Prolester?
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2, yea to git rid of the sharp stand corner on the block.

it should be illegal to require tech support on a Friday

@JPhi1618 - A Yup! :D

@Darth_Vader, you don't have to give it to them. TGIFGTFO!

7:30 PM
@JPhi1618 lol my job would disagree with you =P

I like the idea of the wood to spread out the load... I think that is the safe way to go

Heck, if you are our tech support, you don't get it nomatter if it's Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. They don't work on Saturday or Sunday.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 well its those tech support issues that are on Friday around 1430 hours that just determined you weekend plans went down the drain

and by putting a large paver on the bottom, and successivly smaller pieces of 3/4in plywood, I can go up maybe two or 3 layers of plywood.. Just so long as they are glued or screwed together and the stand still has lots of room between it's base and the edge of what it's sitting on
Been there doing tech support.. used to have to carry a beeper... Fun.... And that's when beepers were not small... lol
The 1AM calls were the most fun..
Speaking of which, time for me to go start my weekend. Gentlemen, as always, it's been a pleasure! :)

@cdunn Have a great one!

7:33 PM
@cdunn sorry, lol left my comment

It will be if I can get some work on my car done.. lol

Now, that's how you get air.
Haha! Nobody wants to say anything, ROFL!!!

I was taking it all in.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 ya no thanks

7:37 PM
is that a downgrade too?

It's actually the prescribed method if you don't have a lift

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 still looks like another slow firebird =P

Well, if it were a Firebird, it might be.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 yep, I failed at that, camaro, lol

7:40 PM
oh the treaded 6th location spark plug, on the firewall.. I hated thee

Same difference right?

@JPhi1618 depends on what enthusiast you ask

@JPhi1618 - everything but the looks.
@Darth_Vader - It was no issue to get to ... if you have the engine out of the car, lol.

7:41 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 ya, that would be a great meme.. camaro spark plug change back bank an issue? just remove the moto

^ I still want to do this

@Zaid careful I might get etsy ideas

@Zaid - You mean you haven't?

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 of course not

7:47 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I wonder how much they have in those engines

way more than I make, that's for sure.
There are a couple of pretty kewl ones in there, though.

one of those was a blower

still like the jet engine from 3d printing

Oh, I didn't realize that's what it was.
@NathanielDavidson - Welcome!

7:51 PM
thanks

@cdunn hydraulic ramps are another option
0
A: How to raise the car higher than the jack stands will allow?

ZaidHydraulic car ramps are a great option if you can source them. They give oodles of clearance by lifting the wheels themselves. You have to drive the wheels into them before using the hydraulic pump to lift the ramp.

Hello @NathanielDavidson .
Transmission woes, huh?

@Zaid thanks I forgot about another solution. Is it ok to add two answers?

Sure, shoot for it
I think @JonathanMusso mentioned a solution on here a while back - portable two-post lifts

@JPhi1618 yeah, but taking a break from it right now...

7:58 PM
@Darth_Vader - That or add to your first.

Now I'm trying to get a feel for this forum

@NathanielDavidson ??

We try to be a friendly bunch,

@JPhi1618 +2

We just hang out talk about cars, site questions, and things we can do to make it better.

7:59 PM
Well, like me being new to the whole mechanic thing

And other random stuff...
