hey @RobertCardona
Hi @Huy.
Huy
Huy
hey, how you doing?
I'm fine, how are you?
Huy
Huy
just a bit tired but otherwise fine
are you a student at uni or already working?
I'm an undergrad.
Huy
Huy
09:18
of maths?
My degree is more oriented toward applied side of mathematics. But I want to switch to pure maths after completing my degree. Are you a student?
Huy
Huy
I'm currently doing my MSc in maths. how come you want to switch?
Oh, pure math is lot more interesting.
Huy
Huy
I like both, but usually prefer pure too. =)
so have you already studied any DG prior to this reading group ?
I've done a course in DG. We followed Do Carmo's Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces (about half of the book.)
I got interested and am currently reading Spivak Vol 1.
Huy
Huy
09:24
ah, cool, I have that book too
I've never read a Spivak book so far :/
So you had a course?
Huy
Huy
yes, we followed Lee and Do Carmo mostly.
Spivak is a really nice textbook.
Huy
Huy
I hear Spivak mentioned often when recommending textbooks, so I can imagine it's nice
but I can't say I didn't enjoy reading Lee either :)
But I haven't tried reading Lee. I intend to read vol 2 in near future. This makes me stick to Spivak vol 1.
I got to go now, talk to you later.
Huy
Huy
09:31
sure
have a nice one

4 hours later…
13:03
Morning. I have obtained a copy of the text, Version 3.0 December 31, 2000. Is this the version you have access to?
Huy
Huy
I have the most recent one from springerlink.
Does it cost much? A university had a copy of the one I have freely available.
Huy
Huy
I think that's from 2012?
You can likely download it for free if you're at university.
I'll see what I can do. Otherwise I can rationalize downloading the book until I wish to buy ;).
I suppose I shall hold off talking about the book until the starting time, else it may deter people from joining.
Huy
Huy
what do you mean by that?
13:07
I will go have breakfast, I'm only on periodically, I just wanted to say I am on board.
@Huy Talking about the first chapter until the 18th.
Huy
Huy
ah, I see.
@Michael: are you from r/math or did you just randomly join? I just figured I'd accept your request for write permission
I look at the chat periodically, but mostly lurk, so I am just from M.SE.
Huy
Huy
ah, ok
See you later :)!
Huy
Huy
@Michael: check out r/dgreading too, the reading group originates from r/math.
13:10
@Huy Sure.
Huy
Huy
We're over 30 people so far, not sure how many of those also have a MSE account. I'm hoping at least 10, that would probably lead to very interesting discussions already.

7 hours later…
20:29
@Huy Hey! I'm interested in working through this with you. Does this book requires prior knowledge of Lee's book on topological manifolds?
Huy
Huy
@RobertCardona: I read them in that order, but I think in principle you can also do smooth manifolds with just a basic knowledge on manifolds.
Ok! Well I'll attempt it anyway!
Huy
Huy
@RobertCardona: Make sure to check out r/DGReading from time to time too. That's where this group originates from.
Thanks! Just did!
Huy
Huy
@RobertCardona: So you have no prior knowledge of manifolds?
20:34
Do you guys have any more reading groups?
I'm taking a course on differential geometry right now. So I know the basics.
But I've been jumping around from book to book just picking up the details I need
Huy
Huy
@RobertCardona: I have one on Einsiedler's functional analysis notes, but I think Julian dropped it and it doesn't really work just with 2 people in total.
I decided to dig in with Loring Tu's book to get a good overview and it's been going well.
Huy
Huy
@RobertCardona: I think there's also one on reddit on babyrudin, but I never read that and don't intend to in the near future.
I'm looking forward to this one though. There are a lot of people from reddit and MSE already who are interested and even if half of them drop it, we have enough people to have interesting discussions regularly.
If it works out well, I'll probably organize more.
Great! Sounds great.
I'm able to devote until the end of March, so hopefully that's enough?
Huy
Huy
I don't know, you do the maths. 2-3 weeks per chapter, how many chapters? :P
20:38
Don't have a copy on me. Will get one Monday from the library.
Huy
Huy
@RobertCardona: it's free on springerlink, if your uni has access
It does!
I'm in Berlin, so I think we're in the same time zone, for what it's worth.
Huy
Huy
yeah, Zürich here
20:39
I'll get it next time I'm at my uni. It definitely works from the Uni computers.
Huy
Huy
you can log in from home too :P
Yeah! I recall you telling me
Huy
Huy
at least it works for me
Let me try.
Huy
Huy
it's 22 chapters, so I doubt we'll be done by March. But we'll surely have covered a lot of interesting things by then :)
20:40
I don't have any account information. It just "works" at my university. I'm assuming it's because it "knows" the IP address is the university's?
Huy
Huy
@RobertCardona: TU Berlin?
TU/FU/HU.
Huy
Huy
you can log in via your uni
just press "log in via shibboleth or athens"
and then under shibboleth you can search for Berlin
K. Thanks!
Huy
Huy
@RobertCardona: Use springerlink while you're still a student. I downloaded so many books that I hope to be able to read in my free-time later. :D
20:46
I've done the same.
Huy
Huy
I'm AFK a bit to watch some TV to calm down my brain. See you around!
