@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I don't think they really abbreviate 'dihydrate' this way, so I'll swap it in initial position

@GaurangTandon Why are they not reopening???
The question was corrected. So I flagged the two comments as "no longer needed". @Moderators the flag was declined. Please tell me why???

Q: Which of the following react with sodium in liquid ammonia?

Ritwik OjhaThis was a question in my question bank. I know sodium in liquid ammonia is used to produce trans-alkenes from alkynes. But from the options, it seems all of them react with sodium in liquid ammonia. In fact, the solution in the question bank itself says: "Solve it as a case of terminal alkyne...

\o @Loong
@skullpatrol hi
how's it going?
stressful, but alive
At least the winter is almost over.
Not so much snow anymore.
@Loong it was and it is corrected
I clearly remember

@Abcd The question has no edits.
And it clearly shows the wrong structure formula.
Thus, both comments are useful.
@Loong How? Option 2 is correct which Avnish has commented
@Abcd Option 2 is wrong as Avnish has commented.
That is why this comment is very useful.
Sorry @Loong. My bad

Q: Hydrogen bond strength of trichloromethane and chloromethane

aforasChloromethane has a larger dipole moment than trichloromethane. Does that mean that the electrostatic attraction (hydrogen bond) between chloromethane and acetone is stronger than that of trichloromethane and acetone?

@Loong ^^^
Hm okay, this question was edited and should be clear enough now.

@CowperKettle neither do I
@GaurangTandon I KNEW IT

@Loong How to pronounce your name? I read it as "long" ...

1 hour later…
10:51
@Abcd actually, Chem.se has another user named "long" ;)
I think it's pronounced loong with a oo as in boom
Not sure though

2 hours later…
13:03
@GaurangTandon it's Chinese shit. You can never pronounce it correctly
13:15
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Loong is chinese

Can it be explained on the basis of Hydrogen bonding? We need to compare 1,3, 7. In 3 and 7 hydrogen bonding is possible while its not possible in the case of 1 so 1 is most basic site? — Abcd 4 hours ago
@Abcd idk, maybe?? maybe have @M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ weigh in

that one yes

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ it's just five simple English letters :/
@GaurangTandon Please give it a look (H bonding comment above)
@Abcd I'll see tomorrow or day after
Okay

@orthocresol what to do in such a case? chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/43949/…
the accepted answer just repeats what the comments have said. ideally the comments should have been posted as an answer in the first place, but, anyway.
@Gaurang leave it be, its the best
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ you pronounce it with a Near-close near-back rounded vowel /lʊŋ/

@JavaScriptCoder Looooooooong?
20:52
Whoa what the hell
Did we get the worst amount of bad questions @Loong @Ortho @Mart, or are we just really really grumpy? The grumpiness, if excessive, can be damaging
What's worse, I found this query from a sad, worrying meta post

Q: Should we initiate assisted dying?

Narusan-in-comaHealth.SE is dying. Continuing the medical analogies, we are suffering from multiple organ failure: bad questions bad answers not enough activity by experienced users not enough experienced users We are slowly entering dangerous territory where bad answers (like a recent example from me) gath...

And Health's #3 position is supposed to be alarming
21:07
What is that query even supposed to mean
Nope... I tried to read the code and couldn't understand it. Somebody'll have to explain it to me...
21:32
basically, it loops through the non meta sites
selects the ones that are > 0 with their score
otherwise have it return 1
and of course these are deleted questions
and then does this: round(100.0*count(*)/@total, 1)
so its only closed questions
actually, its only deleted questions
its basically a measure of how many upvoted deleted questions there are
so we aren't that bad... right??
because out of the deleted questions
about ~50% were heavily downvoted...
I don't see how that's a measure of site badness, though.
I'd expect something along these lines: meta.stackexchange.com/a/192199/312770
same
that's why I thought it wasnt that bad
our users are just really negative on the questions they nuke
back to @M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ - I don't know if you saw this discussion but my stance is this
@jonsca I agree that there is some need for comparison, so I pulled that graph from mod analytics. That said, there are three possible scenarios: (1) the community is closing things that shouldn't be closed, which is obviously problematic; (2) the average question that we receive is so lousy that it is more likely to be closed than not, which is also very discouraging - if this upward trend continues, the good contributors (askers and answerers) will leave. (3) Both 1 and 2. And I think it is both. — orthocresol ♦ Nov 14 '17 at 0:49
I'm sure that there are multiple metrics that show that overall question quality is dropping, or at the very least, not rising.
Solutions are not forthcoming, though. Part of the problem is that we can't seem to agree what constitutes question quality. In hindsight, we can measure the overall quality by deleted/closed/downvoted posts, but we can't seem to agree what kind of question should be closed, for example.
21:51
I concur
My suspicion is that this primarily revolves around how we treat homework. And that's a discussion which I'm not sure if I want to bring up again.
yeah... we don't want to become Quora, but we don't want to be too strict
I have huge gripes with some of the supposedly good homework stuff that is being posted now...
:P then why dont we talk about it?
Well, we talked about homework about a year ago. You can browse through meta.. Long story short people decided that the current policy is still the best way to go.
21:55
yeah
ik
but is it...
I don't know, actually. Maybe it is.
My own take on it is this
(lemme try to find it)
Sep 28 '17 at 19:15, by orthocresol
Oh, to be honest, I was toying with the idea of insta-deleting HW. Naturally, that would be mod-only action. The HW close reason would simply be removed.
bit extreme...?
If you consider the percentage of questions closed as HW that get reopened (which is virtually zero)
We are essentially deleting them, just that it takes 30 days longer and it lingers around the front page
my opinion is, we encourage new users to edit their qs and reward them for good edits
Last 90 days:
- closed as homework 785
- edited 74 (9.43%)
- edited and reopened 6 (0.76%)
22:04
but that is a bit optimistic
Well, I am rather biased. I honestly don't want 90% of this place to be high school organic chemistry questions.
:P i'm a middle schooler so idc
Yup, and I figure that many people are fine with having them around
eventually it gets boring
though
I really think it does not help in attracting people with knowledge and expertise
If you look at the front page and 90% of it is high school chem, we will just attract more high school people
or college
22:08
that can also be a good thing
If that's going to be how it is, then I'll quit
It's fine for it to be like that. It's just not my thing, that's all.
@orthocresol's ultimanium: professional questions or I quit
2
shrugs
shakes head "maybe when I get to hs, I'll understand ortho, but I'm a middle schooler"
I don’t think of it as an ultimatum or a threat. If that’s really what people want, then that’s fine. We can always elect new moderators - life goes on for everybody
Everything I’ve written here will still be available to anybody who passes by
I don’t consider high school stuff beneath me, it’s just that I’m not particularly interested in it, just like I’m not particularly interested in pottery, for example.
22:19
pottery is interesting
you should try it
this conversation is getting really deep
let's talk about something else
Nah... I’m off for today. Gotta get up early tomorrow
Nighty nights
bye
oh yeah you're in britain
