Q: What happens to acids/bases left out overnight?

White FangI conducted an titration experiment a few days back, and was unable to neutralize the solution in time, so I had to leave the solutions of HCL and NaOH out overnight in order to use them the next day. Also, one of my partners blew into the burette to get a drop of NaOH out. At the end of the expe...

They go for a beer which messes with their pH ;)

@Hexacoordinate-C but when calculating pressure why we have not considered moles of C at 20 min and infinity

@Jan I feel like they should have an "average hats per user" leaderboard in addition to the absolute-numbers one, to balance out the huge differences in the sizes of the sites.

Hi, everyone :-)

Is anybody here familiar with inverse trigonometric functions?

Q: Do *Mundi* and *Mundum* mean different things?

paracresolI came across this expression in the book: The Invisible Man, (H.G.Wells) Griffin contra mundum...with a vengeance From my very basic knowledge of Latin (I'm a Bio. student) I take it that contra mundum literally translates to "Against the World". But a couple of years back, I recall chanc...

@Jan I'm on my phone and things aren't working quite properly

> Polysorbate-80, 15g; r=1.08
What could this r denote?
Refraction?
Density?
Good morning all

10:10 AM
@CowperKettle It seems like it may be density, considering that the densities of polysorbate-80 (on Wikipedia) is given as 1.06-1.09 g/mL.
Don't quote me on it, though.

@orthocresol But where would be the fun in that

Of course it's fun. You get to be a mod. There are lots of fancy buttons to press
You get to illegally/immorally/unethically find out all you want about any user.
Including their telephone number and address.

10:27 AM
Legally illegally

It's like being the FBI but even better since you get to suspend users.

Wait, what's my phone number?

(redacted)

@orthocresol Tempting, tempting
But meh

You also get a mod room where you get to superping all the other mods liberally.
Not that you can't do it here, if you were a mod.

time to move back to the other one

Noooooooooo

Can somebody help me in this
I am could not able to find out what would be the next reaction
I think N2 will leave

@help what is the source?
I have serious doubt about replacing the atom right next to the R group
without knowing the nature of the R group

Yeah that pic is horribly wrong anyway. Curtius is with azide $\ce{N3-}$ not diazomethane $\ce{CH2N2}$. If you use those reaction conditions you will get $\ce{RCH2CO2-}$. If you want $\ce{RNH2}$ as the product you have to use azide.
That reaction with $\ce{CH2N2}$ is part of an Arndt-Eistert homologation.
That step itself is called a Wolff rearrangement.

@DHMO this was sent by my friend
So it might be wrong

Um, @Loong...sorry for pinging you again...but If you're free...
yesterday, by paracresol
@Loong In what situation would I use the expression Vox et praeterea nihil? Do I, use it literally when I hear but not see the speaker, or is it something else?

4:09 PM
@orthocresol Lol, I corrected pent-2,3,4-triol to penta-2,3,4-triol without realizing that it should be pentane-2,3,4-triol.

From here:
Herewith, it is useful to recall two rather bizarre examples of oral intake of liquid mercury, confirming that the risk of acute poisoning is indeed minimal. First, it is a story of unlucky love in the former Czechoslovakia [27], when a desperate girl voluntarily swallowed several grams of mercury. Instead of the expected death, she had recovered soon and, since then, became the wanted object of exhibition at medical faculties for several years, when the students and other university staff could observe under a roentgen irradiation how the mercury circulated in her blood system, includi

How is 0.5c any different than the ~17K mph/27K km/h (relative to the earth) that spacewalking astronauts on the ISS experience? Then there's the Earth's motion around the Sun, the Sun's orbit around the center of the galaxy, our galaxy's headlong rush towards wherever we're going... — jamesqf 15 hours ago

@Loong You know the famous quote attributed to Einstein about the universe and mankind’s stupidity, don’t you?
@orthocresol Are you sure you can find out my phone number and address by any means that require mod powers? (Stating the obvious that they can be found without.)

@Jan yeah, apparently it's true in this case, too.

@Loong If this was was worst I' be happy
@M.A.R. o/

@Jan You would have to become a mod to find out. It's a trade secret.
