I'm also reading The Variational Principles of Mechanics by Cornelius Lanczos.

my first publication was on Lanczos' method for finding eigenvalues for latge sparse symmetric matrices :)

it was an implementation - and back then, we didn't have computer power to diagonalize large Hamiltonian matrices, so you had to use tricks
