@pH13 <chuckle> I was occupied dismounting a bin rack from its cart & snugging it up against our gigantic tool chest. Glad you got it figured out!

@Brian Would you have known how to use mixed basis sets with orca? :)

In theory, yes. I've never actually done it for a calculation of my own, though.
I think you either can do it in a standalone %basis block, or as an augmentation to the coords.

I did it with %basis and newgto, yes

<nod>, that's the way I'd've gone about it as a first attempt.

Whoa. @Hipp's really been adding to the feature set!
Are EPR and NMR essentially the same, except that the former is relaxation of electron spin alignment, while the latter is relaxation of nuclear spin alignment?

@pH13 EPR?

BAH.

@Brian sth like that

6:53 PM
Isn't that a synonym?
ESR = EPR?
I know there are at least two acronyms
(In English, at least)
Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, I think it is?

@Loong epr and esr should be the same

@pH13 I wrote the radiological safety reports for the EPR.

Well, it's in the ORCA %eprnmr block name, so I can't be COMPLETELY insane.

@Loong :D

well, not all of them; but for Finland and China

6:55 PM
with google translate?

This, @Loong?
The EPR is a third generation pressurized water reactor (PWR) design. It has been designed and developed mainly by Framatome (now Areva NP) and Électricité de France (EDF) in France, and Siemens in Germany. In Europe this reactor design was called European Pressurized Reactor, and the internationalized name was Evolutionary Power Reactor, but it is now simply named EPR by Areva. Four EPR units are under construction. The first two, in Finland and France, are both facing costly construction delays (to at least 2018). Construction commenced on two Chinese units in 2009 and 2010. The Chinese units...

7:17 PM
no big E to flip ... hm

The lowercase 'l' doesn't render in my browser, either.

what calculations do you usually do with orca, @Brian ?

Whole bunch of random stuff, really.
Whatever piques my curiosity.

7:33 PM
the typical organic/3d-inorganic systems or more fancy stuff with heavier atoms?

The most extensive calcs I've done have been on copper(II) complexes (aquo, ammine, etc.), the metal-nonmetal diatomics of Jensen, Roos & Ryde (GitHub for Python automation), and lately an examination of the effect of the displacement increment on the quality of numerical Hessians (SFP from the 2016 winterschool.cc.)
Mostly organic/3d-inorganic, yeah. I don't have the processing power for anything of appreciable size falling lower in the periodic table.
My original motivation was prediction of coordination complex stability constants.
Then it became clear just how hard that is.
I'm really itching to get the VPT2 anharmonic ORCA wrapper written and validated, because I feel like there's a huge space to be explored there.

vpt2 ... is this sth of barone et al?

Barone et al are the ones that rolled it into Gaussian, yes.
The original theory far predates them, though -- Truhlar et al. worked on it a lot back in the 90's

I know that I printed a paper about this. Need to read it sometimes.

7:48 PM
The underlying approach is more or less the same as MP2, just addressing the vibrational wavefunction instead of the electronic.
I totally don't understand the derivation of it, but the resulting equations are fairly straightforward, if horribly messy.

I think on the spectrocopy stuff, there is a lot to do regarding the programming stuff.

It's actually a niche that suits me well -- I absolutely don't have the algorithms chops to write SCF code guts, but I'm good with automation of execution & post-facto workup.
After the VPT2, my planned code focus is to use ORCA's 'external optimizer' functionality to try to write an optimizer that factors in centrifugal effects.
<shakes head>
I really need to find a way to get paid to code this stuff -- the pace is too stinkin' slow doing it in my spare time.

I guess your "real" work is far from being sth like that?

Completely unrelated.

And as Orca is free, I guess they will not pay for sth helpful.

7:57 PM
I took a quantum chemistry course my first semester in grad school, then didn't touch it at all until after I graduated & took this job.
I assume not; I haven't even bothered to ask.
I might be able to obtain 'independent researcher' funding from the NSF here in the U.S., but it'd be one heck of a risk.
I like the company I'm at now, too, and the work is pretty darned stable, the benefits are good, and the time/travel demands are pretty light.
I figure I'm facing getting the VPT2 up and running in my spare time, then using that to leverage further funding for other tools.

Yeah, never change a running system.
I'm curious if the Spekwin-programmer will get his kickstarter-campaign done ... maybe this would be sth for you ;)

If anything, I'd think a Patreon would make more sense.

Yes, you are right.

The question would be whether to make it a monthly thing or release-driven.
From the perspective of the patron, on the one hand a release-driven model makes sense, so that they're paying for something in-hand.
But bugfix releases are probably too numerous, and major/minor releases too infrequent.
Monthly support would be a lot more secure for me, but perhaps less satisfactory for supporters.

if people are willing to buy (very) unfinished games on steam alpha, why shouldn't there br people to support you doing stuff that will be helpful in future?

8:08 PM
That would be really awesome.

it's like paying for a program that will exist in future to give you the chance for building it. why not also giving the access to stable alpha versions, or similar. but in general, why shouldn't that work for science, too?

<nod> It would be made much better to have future-user input into the development process, definitely.
I'll have to put some feelers out.

do that :) have to go for now ... cya tomorrow

<tips hat>
Have a good night.
