4:09 AM
Jonsca nominated, we can all sleep safe tonight :D

2 hours later…
6:21 AM
hi

o/
@Martin-マーチン :D

O/\o
hihi
I am so happy jonsca nominated...

hiya! good to see another proper candidate stepped up (I can now withdraw mine)

6:37 AM
Why? Noooo!

hmmm i see you have not nominated! tsk tsk
@Martin-マーチン for multiverse overlord!
@Martin-マーチン wait a sec... I am a real candidate? cool

7:09 AM
@santiago Why would you not be one ;)

cause I am a newbie - I'll leave it up there :)

Haha, why wouldn't you. I mean there is no harm or is there?

no harm, unless there is a rubber-chicken-flogging
you. need. to. nominate!

8:04 AM
5 Candidates. Yay!
@Martin-マーチン Me too.
@Martin won't you nominate already!
C'mon man!
Sir!
Whatever!

oi! @M.A.Ramezani and @Martin-マーチン get nominated!

@Martin nominate already!
Nominate! Nominate!
NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNAAAAAAAA‌AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTEEEEE!

Oh but, I have to leave now.
Gotta go work in my mom's pharmacy...
Pure organodrugical chemistry!
See you in some hours.
@Martin NOMINATE!

Don't have too much fun with the chemicals!

3 hours later…
11:24 AM
I hope you are happy now, I have thrown my name in the goblet of fire.
2

12:06 PM
Heya @Martin-マーチン

Hello
what's up @Lord?

Doing some real chemistry right now.
(making coffee)

You mean with your hands?

Hahaha...
that's more applied physics than chemistry, isn't it?
I don't make coffee anymore, since my move to jp...
too expensive :(

12:13 PM
Man that sucks. I'm surprised though. Vietnam is nearly right next door and that is their number one export crop.

Well, the culture is not well established here
they love their overly sweet and milky canned coffee

Ick!

and most of them only drink instant

O.o
Give me your mailing address and I will send you a care package, stat!

man.... this gamess will cost the little hair i have left
haha lol... don't worry, I manage
the canned black coffee is not too bad
no sugar no milk no shenanigans

12:15 PM
I like my coffee like I like my terminal background.
Black

haha... with green or white spots?

Definitely green!

i use a white background with some black symbols

That would overly hurt my eyeballs.

i tried the other way round but that did not work out
haha... emacs or vim?

12:18 PM
whats an emac?
;)
Some guys over at TeX:SE swear by emacs. We used to fight about it.

Haha...
i can imagine that

And you?

There was a time, where I used vimperator on firefox, but since my switch to chrome... the console is all i have

So today's batch is made of 100% arabica coffee dark roasted in Hollywood, FL by a company called Koffee Kult

Sounds amazing
I had three of these today
ice cold, from the machine...

12:28 PM
Accompanied by a little blues rock performed by the dynamic duo, Clapton and the King himself.

helps with the weather

Are they any good?
I'd try one.

They give you the coffee taste and are reasonably cheap
about 120yen per bottle, which is about a buck i guess

Have you ever used graphviz.org?

no but it looks good
i would probably have no application at the moment

12:31 PM
our lab is interested in using it to make connectivity maps for potential energy surfaces
rather than a slice of the PES with energies, we would have a bird's eye view of the PES

That sounds like a good idea... I'd love to have a look at that
is it basically mapping out a scheme?

You got it. I'm writing code for it now that automates the process.

like a mechanism kind of thing?
awesome... automagically built scheme

So you give the program a list of paths. The script will auto-compare energies and then cartesian coordinates (RMSD) within a variable set of thresholds.

I am still trying to get that gamess to run properly... arghhh

12:34 PM
If the differences land within the user thresholds, it will say that two structures are connected.
The end product will be a rather generic graphviz input file that can be customized later by the user.
But in the end, a connectivity map is auto-generated.
GAMESS. I've never used that program before :\

@LordStryker I did not understand that O.o

okay so, say you have two minima and a TS

and you perform an irc (or some poor-man's irc) on the ts
now you have two minima, a TS, and two minima from the irc runs
you provide paths to each of these jobs to the program
and it will compare the energies of the minima to those from the IRC runs

great... wakatta!

12:37 PM
if the energy matches within a certain threshold (i.e. 0.5 kcal/mol), it will say that min1 is connected to TS
of course we will look at the coordinates as well

that sounds great

:) Its certainly been fun coding this up.
Its been slow because I've had to go and learn how to use arrays in csh

certainly more fun than getting gamess to run i guess

I've only ever written things to temp files on the hard drive but that isn't very good practice.
Why wont GAMESS run?

haha... if that is remotely the same as in bash, then well done

12:38 PM
@tschoppi !!

heyoo o/

\o/

/o/
\o\

12:39 PM
wow, some serious discussion going on here

O.o

forgive me for not reading the transcript, I'll just barge in here

well... just a little bit whining from my part
@LordStryker I saw it

:)/-<
:)|-<
:)\-<
dance it up!

Well, somebody is certainly having fun here

12:40 PM
I'm always having fun.

I feel like I'm the only one around here who is ever having any fun.
Geoff doesn't like my Avogadro 2 hype :(

haha... no...

Hmmm... I'm currently studying and really don't feel like having fun

I'm currently coding and I'm having a ton of fun!

12:41 PM
And I'm trying to get into a research group for a semester project and constantly get the feeling they don't want me

Because you put him under pressure
@tschoppi what do you want to do?

No pressure. :(

@Martin-マーチン cheminformatics

why the feeling?

@Martin-マーチン I thought it was going to be this vid
well, because they seem to find excuses to not take me in
problem is, I think it's right up my alley w.r.t. my interests and what might motivate me
also I want to check out the group to see where I want to do my MSc thesis

12:44 PM
I know that feeling
don't give up just yet though

I'll badger the PI until I get a clear response, be it yes or no

@tschoppi Have the PI drop in here. We'll back you up.
@Martin-マーチン primary investigator

@Martin-マーチン the prof

Okay...
got it

12:46 PM
@LordStryker sweet of you guys... not sure how my internet cred might speak for my workplace ethics and the such, but much appreciated!

@tschoppi Don't you know? Imaginary internet points are worth their weight in gold!
;)

Electrons don't weigh much

Compared to...?
They weigh quite a bit compared to other electrons

o/ Nicolau

Heya Martin and LordStryker

12:48 PM
\o/
\o_
\o/

@LordStryker shouldn't you be coding? seriously :D

Give LordStryker a pair of cyalumes and he can go to a Jpop concert

Quick poll: Who of you uses GPG/PGP encryption for their emails?

I'd totally do it too.
@tschoppi Gee I'd look but I should be coding

12:50 PM
I don't encrpyt stuff, should I be worried?

@LordStryker stop pouting. It's unbecoming of you
@NicolauSakerNeto Dunno... I just feel like the more I encrypt, the more I want to encrypt all the other stuff I still send around in cleartext

@tschoppi Meeee

well not encryption most of the time

12345

12:53 PM
Maybe someone gets that reference

as you need people with a key to do that -.-

There we go, LordStryker came through in seconds

Not everyday I run into someone who references hunter2

@Martin-マーチン right; but at least you can auto-sign the hell out of all the messages you produce ^^
@NicolauSakerNeto I had to google that one...

12:54 PM
I doo

all need to see the gibberish :D
********

So it DOES work, poor guy has been mocked all this time for nothing

Yes absolutely

12:55 PM
See? My dancing guy also comes from bash.

I've seen it around before

I need to try that as well...
***********
huh...

Weird.

try man woman
in bash
lol
it's old, but it amuses me still

No manual entry for woman

12:58 PM
I am the king of ...
...my own computer...

sweden?

...gamess is working
(for now)

Your computer gives you the illusion that you are king

12:59 PM
congrats!

now I just have to write a script, that allows me to submit O.o
But that's a task for tomorrow

^motto of my life
I kid I kid

To be fair though... it's 10pm already
so that really is no task for today

Oh, right... Japan

@Martin Tomorrow I'll bring back the sun

1:01 PM
Well and on that note... I shall run to the supermarket and try to get some left over sushi...
hehe...
sunrise is in about six hours though...
found that out when i returned from karaoke the other night

I promise to have it back to you in six.

@Martin-マーチン If you ever feel like you need to encrypt something and send it via email:
2C78 9BF2 D960 6225 7631  7AAA 8544 4C67 F544 8927
And enjoy the leftover sushi!
In a pinchi there's always kappu ramen :)

well, i might rejoin the conversation in half an hour :D

We'll be here. :)

@tschoppi If they don't have any sushi any more, that'll be it for tonight :)
exit
darn... wrong window O.o

1:05 PM
haha I do that ALL the time
!vi
:q
ls
etc.

A bad habit I've picked up in with vim is <C-w> for backwards word deletion... Always closes browser tabs on me...

1:17 PM
That feel when you close a dozen tabs in Chrome.

1:33 PM
(sigh) it seems I have stepped on some toes in that group a while back... now I have to repair relations and I'm terrible at inter-human stuff

And how do you know this?

It was mentioned in an email I just got responding to my latest inquiry
I don't know what exactly it was that ticked someone or several off, but it must have been something
Trouble is, I really want to do research in that area. I also have the feeling that my work wasn't too bad, so it must be something less tangible like my behavior (which, granted, may be considered odd at times)

Well I don't know the exact scenario you are in but sometimes it doesn't hurt to tackle these things head on. You could goto the PI and actively bring it up in a very concerned way...

Yeah, I think I'm going to do something along those lines. But not today, I'll have to sleep on this or else I'll only make it worse

You should seek advice from someone closeby that you trust.

1:40 PM
I think I'll talk to my former advisor and see if I can go via him. It's another group that is closely related
Well, thanks for letting me vent here, I'll go for a run or something. I need to get moving, been sitting around all day now
I'll see ye round :)

1:52 PM
peace

2 hours later…
4:22 PM
Well, that took a little longer...

Did you go on a great sushi hunt?

5:06 PM
Ah man! I lost the company of @tschoppi... :(

5:36 PM
Guys, I have a question.
If any of you steps in, I'll ask.

5:50 PM
@M.A.Ramezani Lay it on me.

Oh hullo @Lord!
My question: What is the bonding in diborane - hydrogen chloride?

Oh that is a good question!
Clearly it would be a non-covalent interaction. I will analyze it with SAPT. Give me a while and I'll get back to you

Okay!
I might even ask it on chem.SE.

Would you happen to have a structure with Cartesian coordinates for this dimer on hand?

I'm Googling...But Google is harsh on me. :(
But no, I don't have anything yet, except that it does exist.
