We are aware that this question does not fit the mentality of stackexchange but you still have the option of helping us. Thank you — Georgios Pligoropoulos 4 hours ago
I'm not sure, but I'm inclined to flag it as spam... (On mobile can't see the flags)
@M.A.R. flag it, if I do it on the phone I'll mess it up
@M.A.R. well that was a while ago, I suggest you start from the beginning again :p
@M.A.R. the problem with the built up is, if you don't get it done, votes will start to age away - and roomba won't do its job any longer... But yeah, I can totally relate to that post
@M.A.R. One more ping for good measure...

well. I can relate to this comment.
The quality of questions is really quite poor. Even though this is ostensibly "a question and answer site for biology researchers, academics, and students.", we attract and tolerate a lot of questions/nonsense from laypeople about anything remotely related to life. This site doesn't seem to have a very clear vision and thus moderation is rather inconsistent (myself included). Meta participation is also very poor which makes identifying and addressing problems difficult. C'est la vie. — canadianer Aug 8 '17 at 18:48
and certainly I share some blame for that

Agreed. However, we are still better off, I think. And even though it takes its fair share of time, we still get some things done. I guess there simply are not enough professional chemists around, who also have the time to spend it here...

2:00 AM
yup, the user base is simply not that large

@orthocresol it's weird how graduation abruptly changes everything... What part of the blame would you like to share?

lack of a shared vision, lack of meta participation, etc. although we can't fault ourselves for not trying
well, real life finally caught up with me as well, so...

Yeah, true. It could be more, but I think we are a quite effective bunch of people, and meta could be worse, too
Ooh I understand, and there are certain changes coming up for me too... So we'll see how that cookie crumbles

I'll still be around to deal with day to day business. But my interest in answering questions is rather lower nowadays.

@GaurangTandon Your edit here: chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/90821/… I accepted, but the reason the answer didn't include those things is because they aren't really necessary to understand the intent. Unnecessary MathJax really makes pages slow.
@AvatarShiny Your edit here: chemistry.stackexchange.com/posts/90866/revisions would have been even better if it cleaned up some of the horrific formatting. I'm also ignoring the fact that it's a terrible question.

2:22 AM
well, honestly, I don't know. Personally I just want to have a math.SE/MO kind of split. I'd have a lot of interest in the advanced chem stuff and zero interest in the basic chem stuff.

@pentavalentcarbon I used to edit all the homework questions no matter how terrible then Martin pointed out that I don't need to edit very poor questions. I wasn't going to touch that one but the 💖 emoji was 100% of pure cringe

@AvatarShiny It's fine, I understand. I think our new editors are improving quite a bit, and now you see that "substantial" edits can be difficult. If you're really good at it, you can turn lead into gold (metaphorically). But I haven't done it yet. Keep it up, though.
Also we could all stand to have a little 💖 sometimes...

@pentavalentcarbon well, chemical names formatted with \ce just always make it easier for me to distinguish english text from chemical text :)

I know, it looks so nice, but MathJax is, really, really, really slow with more than...2 or 3 uses per page.

@pentavalentcarbon : )

The suggested edits limit on five is an annoying hindrance -_- I wish to edit new questions but am completely hindered :(

Q: Standard reduction potential questions

gigiWhy is the standard reduction potential in units of volts (Joules/coulomb)? What does this tendency of a material to reduce has to do with the charge in coulombs? Also, why this number doesn't depend on which elements the reducing material is interacting with? (which material gets oxidized)

How do I remove "questions" from this question ?

4:45 AM
@AvatarShiny I just took a shot at it, you'll see it when the edit gets approved

Q: When a carboxylic acid acts as a nucleoplile, why does it attack through the carbonyl bond?

RobChemHere's a couple of examples of what I mean. Firstly, in the reaction with thionyl chloride to make a carboxylic acid: Secondly, in this specific example of a hydroboration reaction: I don't really understand why you cant attack from the hydroxide group and then proton transfer. Any suggesti...

This question was from some time back and I just realised I have the same question as well. Would any organic chemistry expert like to write an answer?

@GaurangTandon I have a doubt , would you be willing to help /

yesterday's chat tells me your coefficient of stickiness is quite high ;)
i'll say ask on the main site and i'll answer instantly
so that we both get more rep ;)

@GaurangTandon Really ?
@GaurangTandon It's not even a proper question
lets not be hungry about reputation

@Tanuj is it so? then tell, what is it?
@Tanuj was just joking

@GaurangTandon Fortunately i have a "sense of humour"

alright, share your question now

8:26 AM
@GaurangTandon sorry bro , be right back .Gotta go urgent

@Tanuj fine fine

Hello!
How is it going?
Does anyone have any information about Agilent ChemStation files formats?

@Rick Bro you there ?

Hi

Hey
Are you available right now ?

Yeah

Is this a disproportionation reaction ?
$IO_3^{-} + I^{-} + H^{+}$ --> $I_2$

It's a comproportionation reaction

11:25 AM
wow ! never heard of that before ! Can you provide some insight ?

It's basically the opposite of disproportionation reaction, element in 2 different ONs combine to form the element in 1 single ON

oh okay
thanks
@Rick one more question

ok

Only doubt is , why is n factor for KHC2O4 taken as 2 for the first reaction , but as 1 for 2nd reaction ?

11:43 AM
Is the answer a = 2b?

no
it says 2a=b

12:13 PM
Hint: Changing from acidic to basic media changes the species involved in balancing charges, thus the electron count changes a bit for each half equation

Oh..I misinterpreted the question, it looks like it's because there's only 1 replaceable H in KHC2O4

@Rick then why is it 2 for reaction 1

@Secret actually the second reaction is a simple acid-base reaction. Even I thought it's because of change in oxidizing strength of KMnO4 in different media
17 hours ago, by Rick
Acidic KMnO4 converts oxalic acid to CO2
in acidic media, KMnO4 gets a change in ON of 5, while the oxalic part gets a change of 2,

Meanwhile, I am not sure if there exists anything not scary that can redox with Ca(OH)2, so that basically mean it has to be simple acid base

2 x (moles of KHC204) = 5x(moles of KMnO4) or 2 x (a/w) = 5x(100x0.2)
and 1 x(moles of KHC204) = 2x(moles of Ca(OH)2) or (b/w) = 2 x100x0.05
Dividing the 2 you'll get 2a/b = 1
**0.02 in the 1st eqn

Q: Why are (Z)-enolates more stereoselective than (E)-enolates?

orthocresolIn aldol reactions, it is apparently a general rule of thumb that (Z)-enolates give higher stereoselectivity (for the syn aldol product) than (E)-enolates do for the anti product. Quoting Carey & Sundberg, Advanced Organic Chemistry: Part B (5th ed.), p 69: From these and many related example...

@Martin-マーチン harharhar
@Martin-マーチン thanks captain Obvious
Speaking of which, we should call you captain Germany, actually
Sounds better than Captain America
@Martin-マーチン DO IT ON THE PHONE
@Martin-マーチン you're as helpful as I am
There's some ultra super sarcasm on that one
So you can't understand whether I'm helpful or not

Q: How to stop high rank members adding their own rules to the site

user287001In Graphic Design SE the moderator sent to me a message "see this discussion in GDSE Meta". What to do with tutorial requests? -- part II I wasn't the only one. The same message was sent to a couple of other GDSE users. We have the following common factor: The moderator and his supporters think ...

Somebody, please stop this @Mart tyrant!

10:41 PM
@M.A.R. Heh, glad you have the strength to laugh all this nonsense, but seems mine is failing me often.

@Mithoron you, my friend, just need to let the belt loose
Seriously, you're gonna suffocate!
Hello? Oh no, Mith is dead
VTC In Peace

@M.A.R. Nah, at least not yet ;)

@Mithoron phew, so you let the belt loose
But how are you gonna keep your pants up now?

;)

Not sure how that helps but if you say so
Yippee! Our little kid growing.
20 CV reviews for the second day

10:58 PM
106 total o.0

@Mithoron wait what

reviews today

Good. I thought that was the CV review line
I would've shot Mart first, then myself
And written a note beforehand: "I am orthocresol and I see the world upside down"

:p
Site's getting bigger. It's kinda unfair I could earlier flag to close up to 100 times and now only 20 CV
Still sometimes VLQ flags can do the trick :)

Q: Walter White sent me here

quizhead How did this show influenced Chemistry studies ? Why is Meth considered to be the "highest" chemical drug ? Does Meth cooking is done correctly in the show ?

That's a title :D

@Mithoron I was checking with charcoal if I should flag it, but meh

Pretty hilarious as far as dumb questions go :D

Q: what are the properties for copper and graphite?

Chelsea PrichardThis is a question on my past paper but I don't know how to answer it. I have looked on the internet but couldn't find anything. I need your help answering the question.

Ugh
I feel this is under appreciated in the dumb league
@Mithoron well, they tried

Huh VTC'ed it 4 h ago and is still lacking one vote... Maybe 'cause it's so bland ;)
"White" got closed in about an hour and got 6 downvotes

@Mithoron the price of fame

:D

@M.A.R. I don't normally do this, but...done.

Q: Does unit cell determine shape of entire crystal?

Manny46For example rutile mineral which belongs to tetragonal system has a tetragonal crystal system but it's final shape is somewhat different. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rutile Pyrite for example has a cubic unit cell then why its shape is not cubic and something else. What am I missing here?

This is the second one recently, the other being the person who wants to sort the different plastics from waste
lol ok then...
time to wait 22 minutes to reset the counter...

@pentavalentcarbon De gustibus non est disputandum ;)

Just...not worth it at all.
This is getting harder to do by the day.

Q: Please don't call questions a dump, even if they might be one

Martin - マーチンI have tried it once and I will try it again: Shouldn't we be a bit more welcoming to new askers/ posters? Now what brings me back to this topic? Today I came back to the network and was greeted with a flag on a post. It was a homework question, which showed no effort. This is usually fine, if t...
