There never seems to be anyone in here, but love the site and keep up the good work. Cheers.

There are sometimes people in here
I've seen much emptier chat rooms on other SE sites
Actualy, I just meant at the odd hours I tend use it
You guys seem to have quite a discussion going on in here, thanks for putting so much thought into making a quality site.
@MonkeyTuesday There are many europeans here, the times are different from the other SE sites.
I'll have to go now, bye

A: Can a society become unhappier with an increase in wealth?

Borror0In High income improves evaluation of life but not emotional well-being, the authors make the distinction between two factors aspects to happiness and then evaluate each aspect's relation with income. The first one is emotional well-being, which they define as: Emotional well-being (sometime...

@Borror0 Yes, when only one person gets that wealth.
Pretty much what someone answered, but I'm not overly impressed by that answer. Reading the documentation he likes to right now.
14:00
@Borror0 I was just being sarcastic with that answer.
Actually, it's true
@Borror0 Yes, It is true, but I do no think that goes with the spirit of the question
S/He is asking, does money make people unhappy
Check oosterwal's answer. People seem to be less happy as the gap between them and the rich grows
To be honest, what he asked isn't perfectly clear
@Borror0 Yes, but I only see one honest and good question there. Honestly though, your community sometimes blows my mind.
Elaborate
You can say it in mod chat if you're scared to say mean things here :P
14:05
I do not intend it to be mean.
Sometimes they assume the stupidest meaning from statements and ask questions that blow my mind.
I say nothing on the question because I think it better to get those ignorances in the open and resolved.
I'm not sure I follow
No need, just the rantings of an idiot.
I don't like not to understand something. Explain! Now! ;)
My thoughts are not always clear.
I have a clear idea, but not a clear expression, the life of an engineer.
lol, let me make that simpler
14:08
Your community when I have written comments seem to inherently assume the worst. They assume that I must be an idiot and completely wrong.
That has been my experience, maybe it is only the loud ones.
Oh, that's much clearer
Good!
Please flag inappropriate behavior in the future
That question I can see only one good question, which the highest upvoted answer answers.
The traffic is pretty insane for three moderators alone, and our community has spent very little time growing before reaching that stage. We have not yet been able to kick out most of the bad apples.
14:10
@Borror0 It is not inappropriate, they just assume I do not know what I mean and I am an idiot. It is pessimistic, but it is "equally" as probable as my knowing what I mean if you do not actually have a history with me.
@Borror0 I would go volunteer to try to help you guys out but I am not active enough on skeptics to really be a valuable helper.
@Kortuk Do you have an example? It might help to see if there is a problem. :)
In my opinion there was not a problem all, I think I have normally removed my comments when people misunderstood it.
Do you have an example of a comment they misunderstood?
Yeah, I am trying to find one.
I think the only one left was sarcasm

Q: Are Wifi waves harmful?

RabskatranHas it been proven that being exposed to WiFi waves is harmful?

I am the second comment on the question.
work to do
14:26
@Borror0, not the best example. I am really just BSing with you. I think every community has its own little oddities.
@Borror0, ED has a habit of not wanting to close anything. I have started having to crack down on shopping questions.
Sometimes, I feel like none of us will ever get re-elected because we continue to correct most of the current community. Pseudo-answers being the worse.
@Borror0 It needs to be done. You will keep hammering these principals in, if they do not accept it Skeptics may die. If they do you will be heralded as a visionary.
In my opinion.
Don't get me wrong. If I perish, I will fall for what I believe in.
We will see if I even get reelected though. Most of our moderators excluding myself just disapeared for over a month, I did all of the moderation, and I have made people mad. Now that we graduated the moderators are back on and posting.
@Borror0 always a good reason to fall.
The site can only work if we are autocratic about answer quality.
My view is that, as us moderators enforce our draconian view of quality, users who disagree with us will leave after a while - only leaving us with those who care as much as us about quality.
14:40
Yep
It's a bit of a fine line too though
You don't want to scare off people that could be quality users, but I think that it is working well so far.

A: Some of the answers to the moon question seem too philosophical

Borror0I'm considering another answer: Downvote them, just to be sure. Flag them as "not an answer." If appropriate, we'll delete them or convert them to comment. Upvote if you agree. If this reaches the top, it'll be our policy in the future.

Q: Fastest Gun in the West Problem

Omer van KloetenI feel like there's a problem with Stack Overflow, as the amount of people prowling it increases. Each question's answers are sorted by descending score and then descending time of posting. This means that if a person sits down and answers a question in a long, thorough way, going through every ...

@Borror0 Ahh, yes, this is a common problem, really only on the very very easy questions though.
How do I add the "Possible Duplicate" thing to a question? There's a new Daylight Saving Time question that's nearly identical to mine.
@anthony137 Vote to close as duplicate and then enter the url in the allocated space

Q: Use your flags!

FabianWe moderators can't be everywhere, we can't look at everything that is posted on this site. We need your help to moderate it. You can flag any post or comment for moderator attention. If you see anything where a moderator should be involved, just flag it and shortly explain your reason. I'd lik...

I hope you enjoy the flag I put on your comment @Borror0
@Kortuk I hope you enjoy the reduced flag weight! :D
I have flag weight on skeptics? And a post saying +1 to this answer I thought was considered noise. You do that by voting.
But it was meant as fun, I hope you giggled a little
I did, and th flag weight comment was in jest
I thought it was, but did want to confirm my suspicion that it is noise.
me having flag weight though, that is a joke.
I dont have it on ED, I take action, I never flag.
18:06
I flag to delete insulting comments I step on
I figure it's gonna be helpful if i lose moderatorship
I like canceling out my flags that I do for fun with upvotes.
@Borror0 I thought the same thing, then just got way too lazy.
what is your flag weight now?
500?
beating me at 150
Has this been a relaxing mod day?
how do you make a post tag in the markup?
as in :

Q: Tags for resources and references

FabianWe have a tag for resources, a tag for references and a tag resources-references. We should have no more than two of them, maybe even only one of them. Any thoughts which of those are the most useful?

Less horrible than yesterday, but yesterday was a nightmare so...
@Ustice [tag:] and you write the tag's name after the colon
18:17
Ya, I just noticed it in that article. Oi.

19:22
@Borror0 I hope I didn't bring you down man. I can get a little carried away with an argument.
Nothing to do with you. You have no idea how many comments I had to leave on posts, and other reaction to bad posts/comments.
There are definitely days as a mod when you have many enemies and few friends.
I think some people will be suprised when they get the ability to see deleted posts
@MarkRogers We're approaching that from the other side ;-)
@Fabian The YEC alone is quite a sight
And people undeleting answers that were converted to comments is really annoying
19:26
Imagine if we had not protected it
@Borror0 Protection does not do much for questions in the SuperCollider
I think we'd have curled into a little ball in a corner, whispering "Make it stop."
It's really only useful for questions that are externally linked
@Fabian It does. There are many SO users with less than 200 reputation.
It's ironic how the sites attracts both extremely good and extremely bad answers. There's always some guys defending weak positions with weak arguments.
19:29
I think that is the definition of a weak position: when it can only be defended with a weak argument
well, there's always the magic of using well-honed argument skills to inflate a claim to appear reasonable.
but yeah, what you say seems to be mostly true.
Still, that is a weak argument, so that if you boil it down to facts, it deflates.
19:46
true that
20:04
Grr. I wish people were more skeptical when it comes to economics. Once again, minimum wage has not been shown to reduce inequality nor help the poor. As such, a raise of minimum wage is not "a long delayed move" or anything of the sort. Arg!! If you want to help the poor, give them money. Simple, no?
Sorry. Needed to get that out of my system.
What is Egle complaining about here?

Q: Did Charles have Lady Diana murdered?

SklivvzApparently, the English monarchy had the motive and the opportunity: In 1997, Princess Diana (Princess of Wales) and Dodi Fayed (son of Mohamed Fayed, owner of the Ritz Hotel and Harrods) were killed in a car accident while trying to get away from press photographers in Paris. The scandal sur...

How is this different from other conspiracy theories questions?
@Sklivvz The problem with conspiracy theories is that they can't be refuted, only confirmed. for example, "is it true that the Illuminati are trying to X?" It can only be answered if X is true, but not if X is false. Precise claims, like @Mark's Building 7, however can be refuted.
Well, not true - there is an official reconstruction. I am asking if it's correct
Yours is less bad because it asks for "strong evidence that not all has been said of this tragic death" so it's borderline.
Ah! We now have more traffic than Theoretical Computer Science!
we should be called dailymail.stackexchange.com
;-)
20:15
@Sklivvz Ouch, that burns
I'm probably the only one in the room to get the joke though
There you go, a couple clicks, a new question :-)
/cry
another "The genetic mutation that gave Elizabeth Taylor lashings of sex appeal

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1371197/The-genetic-mutation-gave-Elizabeth-Taylor-lashings-sex-appeal.html#ixzz1I1Qn8Kqs"
@Sklivvz lol
20:24
And I thought the Toronto Sun was bad
I love how they emphasis AT LEAST
in "Poison particles from nuke plant found in AT LEAST 12 U.S. states as Japan is put on 'maximum' radiation alert"
I'm sure I live in one of those US states, and I'm not concerned at all. :P
@Sklivvz Fayed's conspiracy claims can be demolished but I'm not sure how one could show "not all has been said". Can you clarify your question ?..or am I missing something ?
20:32
it's a rhetorical figure. "has the last word been said on x?"
meaning, is the case closed?
"How using Facebook could raise your risk of cancer" <- totally freaking awesome
@Sklivvz meaning "Have all the allegations been refuted/addressed ?"
"Increased isolation could alter the way genes work and upset immune responses, hormone levels and the function of arteries" !!!!!!!
@MarkRogers ....yeah, but I bet you're gardening in isolation!
20:36
@Sklivvz Literally, as in, "are there ongoing official investigations into these allegations?" Or merely, "is there anyone left on earth with the energy to continue speculating?"
@Shog9 Meaning: are the official conclusions supported by enough evidence, or are they mere speculation?
@Sklivvz I like that phrasing much better.
I'll add it to the question
21:00
I was thinking of removing and fixing the tags on:

Q: Can a society become unhappier with an increase in wealth?

Kit SundePeople like to claim that less developed countries are happier, because they live the simple life and have stronger family ties and we've all surely heard the saying: Money can't buy you happiness Which is easy to dismiss by showing that rich nations do better on the satisfaction of life in...

Do it!
For one, happiness takes to p's
Specifically removing saying, and fixing the p problem
but do we need a happiness tag?
oh, and vote for my anwer while you're on that question
I will trade you 2 votes on another site
jk
@MarkRogers Never heard of happiness economics?
21:01
Do you prefer me to fix or remove the happiness tag?
should the tag be ? to avoid confusion with the general term?
It's silly how my answer isn't the most upvoted question, considering the most upvoted answer is just a lower quality version of mine.
@MarkRogers I'm mostly saying that happiness is something that can be discussed and analyzed
ok, cool
wealth+money is redundant
I was about to say that
wealth is the better tag here
21:05
I'll get rid of money, since it seems to be referring more to wealth
aye
Don't forget to upvote my answer!
lol, ok
I guess people are liking the quick and dirty answer over the more thorough one(s).
I think it's mostly the FGITW problem. The question got an headstart, and now one one bothers reading all the way down for mine
@Borror0 I get the point of you comment on my fusion answer ...but what does "You may want to build change source though." mean ?...I'm sure it's a typo but I can't figure it out :)
21:11
@Rusty "You may want to change source, though." Fixed now.
The problem is the the source is pro-nuclear, so it's not exactly impartial here
Their article is absurdly well-sourced though, so it should be a piece of cake
As a bonus, it'll bump the question for more upvotes :P
@Borror0 I fooled myself into thinking others would notice how well it was referenced and not see it as pro-nuke propaganda. Silly of me.
21:31
Hi @sjaq
22:07
@Borror0 Important things. Worth to preserve for the future.
22:23
Hello, quiet ones.
@SophieMonster Shhh.
Just so you know, I am wearing my pouty face, right now.
(O^O)?
22:33
Is that supposed to be an owl?
A pouty face...
Clearly an alien
An alien's pouty face
Logical conclusion: @SophieMonster is an alien
runs
You know, I was accused of being an alien, once.
This crazy guy I met that I didn't know was crazy was convinced I was a part of an alien race sent to destroy humankind with primordial microbes.
It all started because I was chatting on irc about playing with the program Darwin's Pond by Ventrella.
@SophieMonster Was it David Icke?
No, I don't think so.
22:36
My family name contains the word alien misspelled /flex
Oh now that I'm thinking about it, Icke's thing is reptilians
not microbes
Well, this guy had come into chat (he actually lived near me, but I didn't find that out until later)
and I was talking about playing with primordial soup.
and making microbes
and he starts telling chat about chemtrails
and I made a joke about chemtrails having microbes in them
I don't remember the exact progression from there, but there was a little bit of me not realizing that he was serious, so I made jokes about taking over the world with my microbes
and I had also gotten his ip from the irc and said I would send some over to him, first.
Skeptics reminds me that, no matter how stupid the people on my part of the Internet seem, I'm actually hanging out in one of the smartest part of the Internet. Seriously, where do you guys find these people?
so, he thought I was all-knowing because I figured out where he lived.
They find me, @Borror0
@SophieMonster If a play were written about that, it would be entitled How to Succeed in Trolling Without Really Trying
22:39
Though, honestly, I already work with the average person, so I'm used to people who aren't terribly bright.
@JasonPlank I believe people like that self-troll themselves
@Borror0 true
@JasonPlank That's exactly what it was. If I had known he was serious, I wouldn't have said those things.
Talking about trolls:

22:43
me waves a little 'skeptics' pennant
apparently, firefox caches the gravatar images.
I got tired of looking at my shoe, so I changed my gravatar
to something narcissistic, because that's how I am ...
but I'm still seeing shoe.
@SophieMonster same
Oh, well. That's not even a cool shoe. That picture was taken for a foot fetishist.
For some reason, I liked the picture for a while and now I am finding it to be less appealing.
@SophieMonster Chat caches the gravatar. Log out and log in. I think it solves it.
22:47
I fixed it.
Cleared my cache and refreshed.
Refreshing would have been enough
probably, but it takes 2 seconds to clear cache
so it isn't a big deal
Hm, for my snack, do I want corrnuts, cup of noodles, clam chowder or sugar free pudding?
@SophieMonster corrnuts?
Oh, corn nuts
yeah, I typoed
Sorry about that.
Cup of noodles always seemed mysteriously tasty and cheap when I worked as a convenience store clerk
Probably all the salt
22:53
I bought them because my landlord decided to be passive aggressive over groceries and I wanted food I could keep in my bedroom instead of in the kitchen.
Ramen: what to eat when you're a student with little free time or money and no care for his health
So, until I move, I'm eating cheap stuff.
I can't eat regular ramen, too many calories. Cup o noodles is within my calorie range.
most of that is because of serving size, of course
but it is really inconvenient to split a square of ramen into thirds to eat.
@SophieMonster oh god so messy
I tried to do that to make it fit in the bowl once, but ever since then I just let it sit halfway submerged in the water instead
I went with ranch corn nuts.
Well, such a small amount of ramen is not very satisfying, anyway.
so it is good that I didn't bother.
I have to keep my snacks below 200-300 calories.
So, as silly as it sounds, picking small cup o noodles for my groceries was actually a health choice, in a funny way.
