@MisterPositive yep you need 150 - I can understand that though. If 101 rep users could vote it would be too easy to turn elections into cross-stack popularity contests
Fffffffffffffff. I just said no to a 9k net boost to my salary by turning down a job offer and it's affecting me more than I'd have thought... (Aware this is peanuts for the US but it's a pretty large difference in the EU.)
Was a 'get to know you' meeting but came with an immediate offer. If I was seriously considering it I'd have setup another meeting prob. But I'm pursuing secondment options to the US at present so accepting a local offer isn't currently in the cards.
But it's still a heavy chunk of change and of course this secondment could still fall through.
I should have a financial discussion with my manager really because I'm rather clearly below the market but they don't tend to be very open to negotations here and I kind of need them for this secondment so that could get tricky. :)
I'm fortunate that I can consider the "loss" of income the cost of gaining the experience I'm currently getting and the possibility of that secondment but there's a difference between knowing that and accepting it. :)
If I have a question about career paths (what would be the available ways to move from a somewhat successful software engineering career into pure math research give my background), is it appropriate for workplace.SE?
@0xd34df00d That will likely be an okay question, but just to warn you, there is a certain degree of close-happy folks and that topic has a lot of closed questions. So don't be discouraged if it takes a little bit of work to keep it on-topic and to keep it open.
@MonicaCellio Fair point, it's mainly because I have a decent idea of some of the ridiculous consulting salaries that are thrown about in high COL areas in the US and because our tax rate is rather different as well. :) Looking at gross that's closer to 22k and my actual cost to my employer would be x1.6 again.
But yes the cognac did indeed help @MisterPositive. It didn't help too much for my input in the 7 o'clock call afterwards but it did make said call much more bearable. :]
Hah, guess my "working in IT" privilege was showing indeed: https://www.askamanager.org/2019/08/my-job-is-getting-reposted-for-a-lot-more-money-than-im-making-now.html
