Anyone online?

7 hours later…
7:01 AM
@Anthony There is now. I think you caught us at one of many slack periods.

7:52 AM
@Snow How am I supposed to tell if my brakes are warped
When I brake, the car goes into epileptic seizure and starts shaking about
Also this boss asked coworker to assault me just can't be real

8:19 AM
@Twyxz sounds like it could be a warped rotor - not the only potential cause though
any other symptoms?

Depends what other symptoms
It's worth noting this is on the Clio so not much works properly
What are common symptoms

juddering, usually.

Yeah that's all I have
the juddering
I believe

sounds like a trip to the garage then for new discs and pads.

8:34 AM
How long before my breaks fully die and don't work xD

don't know. but I guess you don't want them to seize up and leave you stranded somewhere.

true true
Has anyone ever had an issue in Visual Studio where if you pause the program its always in the same palce
as if it isn't running, but if you f11 and step through the programs works as should

9:29 AM
@Twyxz is it just hitting a breakpoint?

9:42 AM
Nope @motosubatsu it doesn't pause unless I physically pause it
because I had a suspicion it wasn't doing anything
and if I pause it's always abck to say line 90
and I have a count further down
and it doesn't increment unless I just spam f11

@MisterPositive [Return Greetings]
@MisterPositive [Inquiry as to Health/Well-being]

doing well sir. seems like we have slew of crap errrr interesting questions

@MisterPositive yep
there's a relatively new user (naming no names) where the questions seem to be flirting with the line of being out and out trolling
if I were feeling cynical I might suggest that school holidays had something to do with it

Hopefully I haven't swung the ole mod hammer too hard.

not that I've seen

11:43 AM
good.

12:16 PM
@Snow Hodor -- hope you and the pups are doing well
Damn. Don't have enough rep to vote at the Pets site.

Doing ok thanks. Starting to get cold in these parts.

@MisterPositive yep you need 150 - I can understand that though. If 101 rep users could vote it would be too easy to turn elections into cross-stack popularity contests

12:37 PM
And elections are never popularity contests...
3

@Snow oh they absolutely are - but it would be a worse situation IMHO if someone could leverage popular hordes from other stacks

I was gonna vote @motosubatsu and @Snow but I digress... ;-)
@Snow Are you saying I won the last election here because I am popular? ;-}

12:57 PM
oof.. sorry about that rant question @moto
they didn't play nice with us

@avazula no worries :)
hopefully I wasn't too blunt in my comment(s) to the OP :)

@motosubatsu no, not at all. Them, on the other end ...

1:37 PM
Fffffffffffffff. I just said no to a 9k net boost to my salary by turning down a job offer and it's affecting me more than I'd have thought... (Aware this is peanuts for the US but it's a pretty large difference in the EU.)
It's five o'clock somewhere right? :)

@Lilienthal yeah that'd be a pretty decent gain by UK standards
was it one of those ones that just didn't "feel right" ?

Not as such. Timing was just off.
Was a 'get to know you' meeting but came with an immediate offer. If I was seriously considering it I'd have setup another meeting prob. But I'm pursuing secondment options to the US at present so accepting a local offer isn't currently in the cards.
But it's still a heavy chunk of change and of course this secondment could still fall through.
I should have a financial discussion with my manager really because I'm rather clearly below the market but they don't tend to be very open to negotations here and I kind of need them for this secondment so that could get tricky. :)
I'm fortunate that I can consider the "loss" of income the cost of gaining the experience I'm currently getting and the possibility of that secondment but there's a difference between knowing that and accepting it. :)
Maybe this cognac will help with that. :]

ah wrong-place/wrong-time
been there myself

2 hours later…
3:24 PM
@Lilienthal Cognac always helps.

Morning

@bruglesco afternoon :)

afternoon indeed!

in thirty minutes

3:43 PM
Afternoon!

4 hours later…
7:19 PM
Good time of day folks!
If I have a question about career paths (what would be the available ways to move from a somewhat successful software engineering career into pure math research give my background), is it appropriate for workplace.SE?

7:42 PM
@0xd34df00d That will likely be an okay question, but just to warn you, there is a certain degree of close-happy folks and that topic has a lot of closed questions. So don't be discouraged if it takes a little bit of work to keep it on-topic and to keep it open.
This question seems like a good example to look at to see how to ask a similar question and have it stay open.

Awesome, thanks!

2 hours later…
9:41 PM
@Lilienthal to anybody who thinks 9k is peanuts in the US: I will happily accept your donation; let me know where to send deposit instructions. :-)

I'm wondering how many pieces of sushi to order for an office lunch. Is The Workplace the correct site for that?
Surprisingly most of the top results on Google are not good answers.

@MonicaCellio Fair point, it's mainly because I have a decent idea of some of the ridiculous consulting salaries that are thrown about in high COL areas in the US and because our tax rate is rather different as well. :) Looking at gross that's closer to 22k and my actual cost to my employer would be x1.6 again.
But yes the cognac did indeed help @MisterPositive. It didn't help too much for my input in the 7 o'clock call afterwards but it did make said call much more bearable. :]
Hah, guess my "working in IT" privilege was showing indeed:
