3:00 PM
And he tends to get a bit wrangly at dinner time, which is in 30 minutes. This might be a good reason to get the meeting wrapped up early.

@Snow is he any good with git?

Only if they involve branches.

excellent..I'm having a ruff time with with this fetch and I think he might be able to help

He'll always find the weak branch.
Self-note for next time: Remember to post a dog photo in my election nomination post.

@Snow Have him contest the election next time. :)

3:11 PM
He posts most of my content anyway. All I do is correct the spelling and g-r-r-r-r-r-rammar

On a related note
our one HR person is out on vacation and everything breaks down at once
:p

@Snow ahh but then I'd post a photo of the kittens and it'd escalate into all out warfur from there
2

so now everyone either gets to self-calculate what raise they got or wait 2 weeks for her to return and print out the sheet

@Magisch that statement brings up so many questions

They decided to do the annual raises early this year (usually in august)
But they chose poorly because the one HR person is out on vacation for the next 2 weeks

3:14 PM
this annual raise, is it like a correction for inflation or something?
or a 'tenure' kind of thing?

part part

moorning eveybody

part inflation adjustment part company success part tenure
and part personal performance

@Snow congratzz on tthose 40k, Sir

@DarkCygnus Thank you for noticing, sir!

3:15 PM
@Magisch So theoretically people have negotiated how much of a raise they will get for the personal performance part?

not really
the bosses just decide

uuuuugh

@Snow :) so how were those cookies?

generally speaking you can expect about 5-7% when all is said and done

is it at least possible to try and negotiate a raise?

3:16 PM
@Magisch is it a highly technical process involving two D10 and a bottle of tequila?

this year has been good so maybe a lil bit more
@Cronax sure but that's not within the normal raise cycle

@DarkCygnus Cookies were a lie.

@Magisch yeah ok then I didn't say anything

@DarkCygnus I am just 1 HNQ away from 40k lol

in some companies, the opaque backroom-D10-Tequila process is the only raise you're gonna get ever

3:18 PM
Then again most people working here don't mind money that much
Sounds strange even spelling it out but most of the staff have gotten comfortable here

@Magisch Stockholm Syndrome is a real thing

As far as I can tell our company does not underpay
quite competitive for the region, in fact
one of the bosses has this personal rule that he can't pay himself more then x times what the lowest salaried worker makes

@Snow Congrats for 40k! 🐶

not sure on the details but he makes a big deal out of it on the reg :p

that sounds like an unexpectedly reasonable arrangement :P

3:21 PM
Yeah both of the owners are past giving a crap about getting really rich at this point
they both live in big houses and their kids are all grown up by now

@Magisch sounds pretty reasonable.. obviously it depends on the value of x

@MaskedMan totally read that as 401k

I think the owners are comfortably in the 6 figures but not much above that

@MaskedMan seconded.. perhaps @Snow should change his name to "Warhammer" (at least until he hits 41k)

It's actually absurd how low the cost of living is here
clothes + rent + food + utilities + bills comes out to less then 700 bucks a month for me

3:25 PM
After a successful retirement in restricted mode at 30k, I plan to go on my 2nd retirement in restricted mode at 40k. I think I will be doing this every 10k from now.

Speaking of Warhammer. Anyone who's enjoyed the MCU movies should take a read of Neil Gaiman's "Norse Mythology". Makes very very interesting background reading.

@Magisch damn that's cheap
@Snow interesting.. I'll add it to the list

I still don't know what to invest the rest in I was planning on figuring something out this winter
probably an index fund or something similarly boring

@Magisch Where are you located?

@Snow I'm currently enjoying my second run through of the Dresden Files

3:27 PM
the 0.4% apr I get on my checking account is just insulting :p
@dwizum southern germany, near frankfurt

@motosubatsu Interesting. Sounds like an updated Dennis Wheatley.

@Magisch Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

I could develop expensive habits

Mutual funds are a good starting point.

currently my only semi-expensive habit is buying new games on steam and subscribing to content creators on the web

3:29 PM
@Snow the title character actually manages to snark more than @Crossedtheriverstyx

Nice. I'll add that one to the list then.

In addition to being a pseudo-expert on navigating the workplace, I am a pseudo-expert on financial matters as well. :)

and I can heartily recommend consuming it in audiobook form - it's narrated by James Marsters (aka Spike in Buffy/Angel) and he's superb

Right. Time to take the boss for a walk before the rain gets worse.

the first book or two are a little sketchy in places but the author was very inexperienced at the time, by the time it hits book 3, 4 and beyond it really hits it's stride and just continues to get more awesome by the book

3:33 PM
@Magisch do you have high interest savings accounts over there?

@Snow all done! How do I transmit doggie treats?

I don't know about how the markets operate in Germany/EU, but here in India, you will typically make a lot more money from investments in mutual funds than keeping money in the bank. Bank interest rates for fixed deposits are around 7%, mutual funds have given me close to 25% returns (XIRR) over the past 4 years or so. Investing directly in stocks gives even higher returns provided you do the research and choose the right stocks.

@ElysianFields No, and I have no idea what that is or how it works
I have never dabbled in any form of investing
I should probably talk to the bank person my family uses for that

Seems that I have written the least number of answers among the folks near or above 40k reputation.

3:49 PM
@motosubatsu If there is anyone in the universe that can snark more than I do, I want him executed.
@MaskedMan quantity over guality, I guess, oh Great one.
I took a few mental health days off from work. Good thing I have an understanding boss.
I don't know if it's a sad thing, or a good thing that my job is the least stressful part of my life.
It certainly doesn't add to it.

I have a good job and work with good people and compassionate bosses. For me my work is sort of an island of serenity amid other stresses.

@Crossedtheriverstyx lol, more like virtue out of necessity. I usually run out of fuel quickly. One answer for the day and I am done. :) Usually.

@MaskedMan Kilisi has elevated brevity to the level of an artform. However, any harshness if probably due to the fact that English is not his native tounge
My harsh answers are usually well received here though. There was one where I was getting beaten up over one by everyone but the OP who thanked me in a chat on his question. But, so long as I was able to actually help the fellow, it was worth it.

@Crossedtheriverstyx I see it as more of Wildcard Excuse. :)

4:04 PM
@MaskedMan I never try to use my autism that way, Not that it would work anyway due to the way Society views autistics

@Crossedtheriverstyx I was referring to Kilisi. :) "Why are your answers so short?" "Why are your statements blunt?" "Why do your answers get so many upvotes?" "Why do you write so many answers?" - Because English is not my native language. :)

morning all

@MaskedMan I get that, just sometimes I wish I had a similar get out of jail free card
@IDrinkandIKnowThings How are you today, sir?

Q: If I choose to work full time, how many hours will I receive?

Hobo_warriorSo here I am, with a Target application in my hand (it’s a digital one, and I have no way of asking my employer) and I’m at the part with two check boxes. Option one? Part time. Option two? Full time. If I choose to check off full time how many hours a day/ a week will I receive?

so far so good

4:07 PM
is this improvable?

@DarkCygnus well, It can't get much worse. I'll look at it. Given the user's history, I doubt it though.

I think it is generally answerable. Replace Target with Large Family Department Store and it should be good

umm

Q: How many hours can a minor do in Minnesota?

Hobo_warriorI’m 16 years old, and soon will be turning 17 (July 7th). This summer, when school gets out, I will be applying at Target which is about a minute walk from where I live. Am I able to work full time at 40+ hours a week or is there a law for minors about that kind of thing? Research into the top...

look at his last Q
He is basically asking the same again, or am I wrong?

Hmm, I didn't expect to see this. Seems that HNQ really loves me. :) ...

the op doesnt want it improved

4:13 PM
SEDE Query for average answer score (top 100 users): data.stackexchange.com/workplace/query/1807

@IDrinkandIKnowThings :0

so close it off topic specific company
at least thats what i did

@Hobo_warrior Can you not pay your aunt from your other regular job, the one where your boss didn't pay you overtime? Or do you mean she will take $100 from the paycheck of each of your jobs? — Masked Man 2 days ago

The second one is completely on topic. Not sure why its being NIMBY'ed

@IDrinkandIKnowThings If the OP doesn't settle down, I shall use my newly acquired lobster powers on him

4:16 PM
@IDrinkandIKnowThings it's basically a dupe of his last post

@IDrinkandIKnowThings Seems that I misunderstood you yesterday, although I felt like there was too much loaded language in use. Anyway, we will come back to the relieving letter stuff some other time. I am not in the mood today. :)
@DarkCygnus Wasn't that question inactive for some time? He placed a bounty is the last thing I remember. Am I missing something?

It was inactive for a few days. He placed a bounty despite there being a 100% correct answer, claiming he couldn't follow a link in it because it was blocked on his network.

@MaskedMan It received some attention, yes he placed bounty and gave it to @MisterPositive and now he basically asked a new post where he asks again how much Full time can be in Minnesota if he is 16

Oh, I didn't see that new post. Got it.

and 50 points for @IDrinkandIKnowThings

4:22 PM
@DarkCygnus I voted to close that as a duplicate as well. I was tempted to ask him if he wants to work unpaid overtime :P, but decided against it.

@DarkCygnus one is what does the law allow. The other is what can he expect from the employer

He wasn't very receptive to the edits and improvements... and he also had a deleted post where he again wasn't very receptive

So leave his posts alone dont edit vote and move along
All editing does is agitate him so leave it be and let the process work
And if people are downvoting the user, then we have a serious problem because that is strictly forbidden

@IDrinkandIKnowThings I agree, it's similar but slightly different questions: 1) what is the maximum the law allows me to work? 2) When people say "full time" how many hours does that mean? 3) If I ask for full time, how many hours am I likely to get?

@MonicaCellio Thanks @MonicaCellio Email is fine. I'll print them out and he'll eat them, as per normal.

4:32 PM
@Crossedtheriverstyx Shortest "correct" answer I have ever seen so far. ...
5
A: Pi and the sum of reciprocal of squares

TheSimpliFireYes, of course. $$\pi=\sqrt{6\left(1+\frac14+\frac19+\cdots\right)}$$

To be fair though, it wasn't such a great question. "Is this true?" - "Yes".

@IDrinkandIKnowThings yup, just left him be

@MaskedMan have you seen code golf se?

@IDrinkandIKnowThings Yes, but there the "short" answer is usually accompanied with a long "explanation". :)
Answer Golf SE, anyone? :)

We should do that. complex questions with the shortest basically correct answer.
once the community accepts an answer new answers have to be shorter than the current accepted answer

I guess Kilisi will be the Jon Skeet/Joe Strazzere of that site. ;)

4:41 PM
@MaskedMan 2 birds one stone...

Brevity is the soul of wit.

If Kilisi posts an answer, the question can be automatically closed. There is no point in anyone else trying.
@Crossedtheriverstyx Brevity wit.
:)

On a site where that is the goal, I say that is a very good thing.

Like those Code Golf answers that are in some reaaaaly esoteric and strange language, and make it with something like 8 bytes

@MaskedMan After much musing, I think that I'll stay around. My revenge on my detractors will be to continue to contribute to the point that their pettiness will be plainly evident for what it is.
@IDrinkandIKnowThings Code review is another good one.

4:46 PM
@DarkCygnus You wrote exactly what I was about to write.

hmmm I know SE wont want this idea. But I can see a site called JustTheFacts.com or something being successful

It's like, "Sure, this language conveniently has the &^% method that happens to print a Christmas tree with prime numbers yey!"

Some people have even invented strange languages that have Unicode characters as operators specifically for posting answers there.

What we have to do is to write a neat new language of ours, and start asking posts there that our convenience methods can execute in 1 byte
@MaskedMan dammit
xD
We are synced today huh? @MaskedMan

You write an assembler to do the code

4:49 PM
@IDrinkandIKnowThings How are you doing?

nah, Protoboard for the real pros lol

trying to figure out how to sell Masked Mans idea
My Business plan so far, 1) Steall Masked's Idea (complete)
2)...

Those next steps are tough.

I always liked coding in "C", it has the ease of use of Assembler, an all the speed of COBOL.

6) Profit

4:50 PM
yep that's about right.

@Crossedtheriverstyx yeah, those embedded assembler thingys are useful

@IDrinkandIKnowThings See Missing Steps Plan :) "1. Steal Masked Man's idea. 2. ???? 3. PROFIT!!!" is more like it.
@DarkCygnus Seems so. :) Those code golf specific languages sound quite stupid to me.

Well F...
My code ran without errors.... but it didn't do what I wanted :(

@DarkCygnus fiddle sticks?

@DarkCygnus f... functional deficit?

5:00 PM
actually it was ... first in first out

Am I the only one who says "oh no!" when my code compiles the first time without errors?

@MaskedMan That's one of my all time favorite xkcd's

@Crossedtheriverstyx I usually say WTF.
@dwizum I especially like the alt-text on that one.

@MaskedMan I'm a fair to middling developer, but an excellent maintenance coder.....because I'm a fair to middling developer.

5:08 PM
@Crossedtheriverstyx I will often recompile figuring Visual Studio decided not to actually recompile...

Excuse me while I write a language with just one operator that prints all the prime factors of any 400 digit number, then post a question on Code Golf SE with a sock puppet, and ... you know the rest. :)

@IDrinkandIKnowThings sadly this really does happen on occasion...

@MaskedMan Yes, my favorite part is the girl's dialogue

@MisterPositive I do it regularly

I haven't seen that much with 2017
it happened frequently in 2012. Would build fine, but debug would find compile error....

5:11 PM
I run into problems with the obj files not being refreshed.

with the current version?

oh, ok.

is that fixed in 17?

I never had that issue before, but haven't seen it in 2017 either.

5:13 PM
@IDrinkandIKnowThings Ever get corrupted modules? Nothing makes me want to tear my hear out when I suddenly get bizzare errors and the only thing that tips me off is that the code works in another module.

@AnneDaunted hello there, looking forward to the election results?

By the way, what's the deal with this user? workplace.meta.stackexchange.com/users/22656/… His 3.7k reputation on English.SE indicates he doesn't have any "English is not my native language" issues, but seems to find it hard to understand the feedback given on his questions. Anyone else finds this a bit ... strange?

Haha I asked about him maybe a week or two ago

Yeah I guess I was also involved in that discussion. He has reappeared today on meta wondering why his question was deleted.

5:17 PM
I take it as a combination of a bit of "English is not my native language" mixed with a bit of "I don't really understand the SE format" - I do think his questions sometimes have some degree of validity on Workplace, but they're often very hard to read and he doesn't take feedback well
He makes major edits sometimes that totally change the gist of his questions, and in other cases he makes edits that don't really address the issues

I have avoided a certain site, it has been good for my blood pressure.

he seems to do everything except the right thing

@MaskedMan I remember them from another site (actually, when I joined SE and saw their name for the first time (Canada - Area 51 Proposal I think), I thought they were some kind of official bot). They live in the UK (and Canada) but may not be natives - if I remember correctly (big if).
@MisterPositive Hi! For sure, it's quite exciting.

@AnneDaunted haha that was my comment that started the last discussion about that user. I asked if they were a bot

Does anyone remember if the moderator election results are posted automatically at the end or is there a process of review first?

5:20 PM
@dwizum I didn't know what Area 51 was and they had very unusual abbreviations in their questions, so that it was hard to understand.

The user might be a guided bot, they do respond like a human sometimes.

@MisterPositive On SO I remember there was a short delay, somewhere around an hour.

@MackM Thank you, wasn't sure how the end game was played, so to speak.

@AnneDaunted And a lot of the content they post looks like an auto-generated clickbait webpage

5:23 PM
@MisterPositive You mean something like, if Masked Man won the election, they will say, "You can't be serious! Let's do this again!"? :)

……………………………………..

A: Please reopen questions that I improved?

Masked ManIt appears your edits have mostly reworded the closed questions. You are yet to resolve the issues led to the closure. Please address the issues, we will consider them for reopening. A common observation across the three questions is your attempts to be as vague and anonymous as possible are ma...

@MaskedMan I think you meant WHEN.

As I posted there, they make edits which shuffle and reword their description, which doesn't really change anything. Then they responded by saying they found my comment "saddening" and even edited the meta post in response to my "saddening" comment.

@MaskedMan One of the questions is I do I be Respectful about being disrespectful

5:27 PM
W00T found the bug
Apparently, if you pass Nan along an array, and then try to allocate that into a ByteBuffer the NaN is ignored and just "poped", no error whatsoever. So my coordinates were x,y,z but all my z' were NaNs, thus when I traversed the buffer 3 by 3 everything was chaos

@DarkCygnus That is rather nasty.

@MaskedMan Since you mentioned their ELU reputation: They asked 347 questions and provided 57 answers. I checked just some of their highest-voted answers (this one was even accepted) and it seems they mostly provided and cited sources.

@AnneDaunted Even that shows a lack of understanding the SE model. Sources that support someone else's answer should ideally be edited into the answer, not provided as a separate answer. Right?

@AnneDaunted Oh dear, reputation can be misleading as well. Now I looked through their profile there, and it seems that there isn't really any evidence supporting what I said previously. The English used in their posts is technically correct (mostly) but rather esoteric and strangely phrased. That just makes the bot theory more likely.

@dwizum Answers should also consist of more than quotes.
@MaskedMan Indeed, it can be quite misleading. E. g. writing one HNQ question (or, if the question goes HNQ, even a mediocre answer can suffice) and people can gain a lot of reputation, without knowing much about SE or contributing positively.

5:36 PM
I find it a bit disappointing though that the site has somehow allowed this to continue until they have made 400+ "interesting" posts, and is likely to continue further.

I remember a troll who got quite a lot of reputation this way but else didn't improve the site (e. g. especially on a meta site they would back every other troll, even lie to damage the mods' reputations etc.). Well, it seems they got banned for like 30 years or so, so the problem was solved.

@MisterPositive God knows why I decided to check that specific part of the code

@DarkCygnus Sometimes being lucky is good.
Have I mentioned that I hate JavaScript? Not all the time, just part of the time...

@AnneDaunted Wow, never seen a ban that long. The longest I remember seeing was 1 year.

@MisterPositive what things you dislike of JS?
the lack of Types? (me too, that's why people made TypeScript I guess)

5:45 PM
@DarkCygnus It allows bad coders to write functional code, but a jumbled mess to enhance or maintain.

@MaskedMan 28 years, to be exact.

Does it happen to you that you finish some feature or ticket or whatever, and the next thing you have to do is to check and close the 876,525 tabs you have open, Starring and UV those SO posts that helped you, bookmarking other links, etc.. so you can start piling tabs again?

@DarkCygnus Let's start with: [1] + [2] === '12'
Or even worse: [1, 2] + [3] === '1,23'
It's not just the lack of typing, it's that it does very nonsensical things with it. Other dynamic languages (such as Python) are considerably more sane
Also, a lot of the standard API is meh at best

There is also JSFuck
[[]]][[]()()()()( and BAM, you got SQL Injected

And a simple infinite for loop will still crash all browsers
(arguably not a JS problem but implementation problem, but still...)
Heh, that JSFuck is pretty funny

5:58 PM
Currently I've had the chance to work with Kotlin on Android, and I must say I am quite hyped/impressed with Kotlin in general

I wanted to do Kotlin a while ago, I got a beginner Kotlin/Android book, but got stuck with the Android studio stuff not really working with my phone or something and then gave up

It's got some nice features

Basically, I go through this phase every 2 years or so: "I want to develop an Android app. Let's set up Android Studio first as that's the recommended environment. [hours of frustration later]. !@^!@$ this"

Has lambdas, is null-safe, really java-like (but less boilerplate), got types and at the same time you can drop them and let them infer them
@MartinTournoij :/

Even the simple action of copying stuff of my phone is a pain with Android
I don't like the platform at all, but not a whole lot of choice out there

6:01 PM
Before this wild bug I just killed, I struggled for like 1.5 weeks trying to get the Download Manager to work

I think I had problems with the VM last time. Also, the book was 6 months old, so of course by that time Google had changed everything in Android Studio, so the book was hard to follow as well
I used to have more patience for stuff like this, but the older I get, the less patience I have for silly nonsense like this. Life's too short
And unlike my younger self, I also have other hobbies and a social life now :-)

That is why I develop without emulating the device, always with the target device(s)
Yeah, sometimes Android dev makes you forget there is something outside the window
that is if you have windows visible

I have a window but it's UK sized (that is, very small)

6:18 PM
@MartinTournoij we're tiny..but fierce

Not fierce enough to let enough light in to my office @motosubatsu

Speaking of UK, I saw something yesterday that made me Lol
meeh

@DarkCygnus the sun? It made me look up in wonderment :-)

{
  "error": "Invalid size parameter: 980"
}

maaaaaah
The queen has had the Infinity Stones all along!
@RoryAlsop yeah, I challenged it to a gazing contest :)

6:27 PM
@MartinTournoij be grateful we allow you any light at all knave!
@RoryAlsop don't know what happened I logged a bug with the people who maintain the constant cloud cover and I am awaiting a response

@motosubatsu we're just trying to find out who turned on the Big Light

Bloody EU nationals stealing British jobs, welfare, and sunlight!

@RoryAlsop they must be found and punished!
@MartinTournoij yeah I think our sunlight allocation is being given to France after Brexit
@DarkCygnus why do you think we all do what she says?

Sid
6:44 PM
@DarkCygnus You mean... Thanos=The Queen?

OMG, so when Deadpool said "Shut Up, Thanos", he was actually speaking to her? How rude!

@DarkCygnus no Deadpool spoilers or I will have Her Majesty snap her fingers and wipe you from existence

still haven't seen it? Now you got Han Solo on the stack also

Han Solo is on Stack Exchange?

@DarkCygnus was going to go tonight but tbh just too sore to face the torture of cinema seats

6:56 PM
@dwizum yeah, it's HanSolo.SE
:o)

7:12 PM
Well, going out for lunch. Good luck to everybody on the Elections :)

7:44 PM
Have they announced winners yet?

7:55 PM
I think it's in 4 min still @MisterPositive

lol, it even counts the seconds
Isn't there OpenSTV for Linux?
496 voters in total

Well, I think the efforts to take me out just Went Horribly Right

gratz @Snow @MaskedMan

@Snow A very effective campaign strategy :)
The dog won me over.

Congratulations to the winners!

Thank you everyone. It was a good fight well fought. Well done to everyone. And @MaskedMan

8:25 PM
@Snow Gratz! You will do well. I would have been happy seeing any of you win.

@Snow I wish you a nice time cleaning up all the cruft
:D

Nothing to clean up at TWP, we are pure as the driven snow

Nice to see both of my top choices made it :D

Thanks Richard, much appreciated.

now excuse me as I flag a few hundred posts

8:26 PM
Shutting down now though. Late here. Catch up tomorrow sometime.

@snow, wait, have a few celebratory drinks first!
Scotch on the rocks anybody?
Too soon?

Q: 2018 Community Moderator Election Results

Jon EricsonThe Workplace's fifth moderator election has come to a close, the votes have been tallied, and the two new moderators are: They'll be joining the existing crew shortly — please thank them for volunteering, and share your assistance and advice with them as they learn the ropes! For details o...

Nicely done @Snow

@Crossedtheriverstyx No alcohol for me, thanks.

@AnneDaunted I understand. Personally, I have an alcohol problem. I'm running out of alcohol, and that's a problem

8:39 PM
There's really not much of a party going on. One of the winners just went to bed - does the other one even know he won?
@Crossedtheriverstyx maybe a glass of champagne

@AnneDaunted He likely hasn't woken up yet, he's in India.

@Magisch I have to get used to seeing you without your avatar.

@Magisch yeah, get an avatar! I have a few that I could lend you.

@Crossedtheriverstyx Why does he even go to sleep? According to this answer he shouldn't be sleeping.

@AnneDaunted the asians are starting to slow down as there are more jobs. Good for them though.

8:47 PM
Seven moderators now to keep TWP under control.

@AnneDaunted I've only ever seen three. Monica, Enderland (now under new management) and Lillenthal(now under new management)

@Crossedtheriverstyx What about Jane? She's quite active (and writes excellent answers).

@AnneDaunted never seen her acting as a mod though, and never in here.

She is plenty active as a moderator ;-)

Maybe behind the scenes?

8:55 PM
Nearly all moderation is behind the scenes, realistically
There are some "obvious" cases where it's not but the vast majority is behind the scenes
