7:58 AM
@DarkCygnus The "pukey" olive green seems to be spread across all SE sites that have customised themes. Standard themed sites are immune.

8:37 AM
morning all

Morning! Just off to make the third coffee of the day.

@Snow I'm just about to crack my second can of red bull
feeling like something crawled inside my sinuses and died
on the plus side the V8 beast is back
:D

Oh, that's nice. All sorted out to your satisfaction?

@Snow so far so good :) it may be my imagination but the 'box seems a bit sharper to respond than before
and it's so fricking nice to have power again

Sweet. Was it valeted for you as well?

8:47 AM
@Snow it wasn't..but that's not a problem - I was due to give it a clean out just before it went pop so I'll probably do that tonight. I've got three tons of random crap kicking around the back seat due to christmas, I would have cleared it out last night but it was dark cold and chucking it down so I passed

Not having it valeted is a good thing - they wont have put fresh swirl marks all over the bodywork.

@Snow a man after my own heart :)

I always do my own car washing.

same here.. I really need to give the Audi a proper detail but probably have to wait a couple of months for the weather to get reliable enough

Over winter, I like to think of the dirt as being an "insulating/protective layer".
I get some grime on there in the late autumn to protect the bodywork from salt damage.

8:53 AM
@Snow hehe
it probably does actually help protect it from the salt

9:10 AM
Fun driving into work today. Large tree down in the country lane I use. A smaller tree on another route, so I just drove right over it.

what car do you drive?

Oh, I have a Porsche Macan.

you could have done the large tree with that bad boy

Nah. It was a full sized tree - the trunk was up near the headlights.

9:34 AM
@Snow that's a big ass tree
unless of course this is your Macan?

lol. That seems far too cheap to be officially licenced. looks good though.
Coffee, carbs, early Rush. Time to get some work done.

3 hours later…
12:35 PM
Morning everyone....

@IamSoNotListening Good afternoon sir

@motosubatsu hello sir

how's life treating you today?

meh. Slow day on the stack...

@IamSoNotListening yeah seems quiet again today
I'm in real danger of getting some work done

12:57 PM
We've just had a belated christmas meal, our restaurant was not ready after the move, and I might have had too much to drink. How do you carry on the day knowing that? I think I need a lie down....

@Draken take a nap

@IamSoNotListening Sadly none of our meeting rooms have the necessary facilities to do such a thing, i.e. curtains. Afraid I would be caught. Most I can do is tap on the keyboard and see if I produce legible code...

1:12 PM
ouch

Reading books during lunch can get really frustrating sometimes. Especially when you're getting close to the ending.

@Snow yeah BTDT.. I have a similar problem when using audible in the car - it's horrible to have ~10-15mins left on the book only to arrive at work and realize you just don't have the time to listen to that last bit and have to wait until lunch or home time

Yeah, I can't listen to things like that in the car, can't concentrate on two things like that.

Wow, I actually got a full nights sleep last night. It doesn't happen often

See, told you my back room was the place to be.
Hope the golfers didn't wake you too early.

1:22 PM
@TheSnarkKnight feel human again?

1:34 PM
@IamSoNotListening for there to be an "again" there needs to be a first time ;)

LOL @TheSnarkKnight

2:04 PM
ugh... I'm having a real banging-my-head-on-a-brick-wall day

2:41 PM
@motosubatsu sounds like a typical day for me. So far, the brick walls have been losing.

morming

Good morning @ChrisE

@TheSnarkKnight my particular brick wall is winning
I'm trying to debug something that calls an external API - unfortunately the stupid proxy here means I can't call it from my machine, I have to build and deploy the code to the test environment to test every change, which with the size of our solution means it takes nearly an hour each time

ouch.
is there no way you can bypass the proxy?

@theonlydanever nope... it's enforced on us by group and there's nothing we can do about it
it's a complete POS as well which doesn't help

2:53 PM
@motosubatsu well, this seems appropriate.....

@TheSnarkKnight very much so

3:06 PM
I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because you're a troll who keeps asking questions that involve child pornogphy like this one. Stop it — Draken yesterday
@Draken Generally speaking we'd prefer it if you avoided calling other users trolls. It tends to be counter-productive.
In this case it seems more like a case of the OP deleting his old post to start from 0 downvotes (with little success). Not good but not necessarily trolling.

@Lilienthal two delete votes on that one, care to cast the third?

@TheSnarkKnight Which question?

@IamSoNotListening THIS ONE

It be gone now

Done. Child porn goes directly to the police. No other route is applicable.

3:19 PM
@Snow Yep. That falls into my stupid question bucket.
or troll as in this case
Someone ask a good question, that I can answer and get a gold medal out of it please...
@Snow By the way, what is fish pie? Like our chicken pot pie ( with fish )?

It's a pie made with bits of fish/seafood and mashed potato. I guess a little like chowder in a pie.

@Lilienthal I would normally agree, but having three separate questions from different newly created users who kept managing to associate the question with child pornography was triggering my alarm bells. Consider this an extraneous case. I'll make sure it doesn't happen again

@Snow That sound good...

@Snow Indeed it was :)
Good morning people

3:33 PM
Good morning, @DarkGreenCygnus
Looks like that CSS bug got sorted out.

yeah they got it I think

@Snow lol

@IamSoNotListening Would you like me to ask my barrel-scraping question: "How can I tactfully tell a lady from HR that her clothing inappropriately clings to her rear anatomy while she walks"

Im green da du beee da du baa ... oh wait.. I think it was another color...

@Snow Sure. I think it will get deleted before I can type out an answer though.

3:39 PM
Either that or get migrated to IPS.
Or, "How do I stop random people squeezing the crap out of my stress toy?"

@Snow you charge per squeeze
or start selling stress toys

Or "I got fired for wearing a gimp mask while working, is this legal?"

"A colleague keeps on absolutely DESTROYING the toilets and it stinks. Should I report it to HR?"

@Draken now that mods are aware, we'll just start flagging any child porn posts
Fish pie is a crime against nature

"How do I stop people emailing documents for collaboration and use the file share instead?"

3:44 PM
these are all good questions
HNQ for sure

@Snow how about "Someone told me that my stress ball is not for throwing at coworkers who cause me stress, should I go to HR over this?"
"Can I be fired from running a private website off of company server?"

How do I stop co-workers sharpening their bananas at my desk?

"Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me. Can I report them?"
it's in your head now.

@theonlydanever you git

@Snow What the hell is a gimp mask?

3:46 PM
you're welcome, @motosubatsu :)

@IamSoNotListening something you don't want to google from a work computer

@IamSoNotListening - Google it on your work computer
dammit @motosubatsu!

ha ha ha ha ha @theonlydanever

tomorrow's question: "I was fired for Googling gimp masks at work. Is that legal?"

"My manager has Tourette's and keeps swearing at me, what should I do about this?"

3:49 PM
Gimp Mask not safe to google at work, for those who did not know.....@theonlydanever is a bad person.
2

oh my god, you didn't. did you?

@theonlydanever LOL of course now
not rather...

that's a shame... would have been interesting to hear how you explain that away ;)

"My manager keeps tethering me to my desk using a Kensington lock, what does this mean?"

I might steal that file server one... ;-}

3:56 PM
"My coworker was listening to music, I asked him what it's called when it slows down and he said 'ritardando', can I complain to HR?"

I have to keep restraining myself from singing along to Tenacious D. I've had to remove it from my playlist.

LOL
which song?

"My married boss is having an affair with his secretary, should I tell his girlfriend?"

@TheSnarkKnight "What about his boyfriend?"

@TheTinyMan he's having an affair with the Boss's wife

3:58 PM
@TheSnarkKnight Well heck, who isn't?

@TheTinyMan the husband is always the last to know

@TheSnarkKnight The horrors that monogamy wreaks upon this world...

@TheSnarkKnight Yep, its your civic duty.
@TheTinyMan Nope, screw him.

@IamSoNotListening Oh, I am

@TheTinyMan LMFAO

4:01 PM
he gets around too

I like this @TheTinyMan person....

@IamSoNotListening :-D Hi, I'm Tiny, and I'm not work-friendly!

Nice to see the chat room back in action again. Been far too quiet lately.

@Snow agreed, and light-hearted as well.

Almost home time now. Looking forward to going out to a meat restaurant tonight.
If I come into chat tomorrow complaining of chest pains, you'll know what's happened.

4:09 PM
If I had to sign one page of a multi-page document, and email it to an employer, would it make sense to just print out that page, sign it, scan it back in and stitch the PDF back together to include that page, even if that creates a clear visual contrast between that page and the others?

@NotThatGuy Just scan the one page you've signed. That should be enough.
Or if they want the whole document, then do the whole document.
In the past I've only ever returned the pages I've scribbled on, and it's been fine.

how many pages is the document, @NotThatGuy?

@NotThatGuy Do you have to initial the other pages to show you've read them, like for a contract?

4:27 PM
Meat

Like a dozen pages. They didn't mention needing to initial every page, so I'll probably just go with signing on the line above my name.

@Snow - did you mean to type that in to Google?

Hello World

@Nofel Syntax error on line 1

@TheTinyMan well, if it's PHP, any output is possible.

4:32 PM
:) yea I m crappy dev

@Nofel Aww, now I feel bad! D:

Morning @Nofel I have your email, I'll get to it this weekend, I think

@TheSnarkKnight So long as you don't need to read the code

@TheSnarkKnight it’s ok. Although I m seeing myself as a screw up
Spend too much time in wrong place has made me useless out of sync

4:34 PM
@TheSnarkKnight I'll take a copy of that book for every PHP developer I know!

@Nofel out of sync, perhaps, but not useless

So 2 copies.

@TheSnarkKnight I doubt that. I m taking forever to work. When I hear ppl in they did x or y and 1,23 ticket I am like
Why I m so slow coz last office never let me do it
I might be laid off

@Nofel and that's a lack of experience. Just look to improve your time and skill, THAT is key, do not worry about anything else.

@Nofel The learning curve with programming, particularly at a new job, is a lot higher than it looks like when you're on it wondering why you're not moving as fast as you feel like you should be. It really does happen to everyone.

4:49 PM
@Nofel remember FOCUS ON THE SOLUTION, NOT THE PROBLEM
@TheTinyMan don't tell anyone about this conversation, I have a reputation of being an insensitive jerk that I need to maintain.

@TheSnarkKnight Too late, everyone at TAS thinks you're a harmless fluffy bunny now

@Nofel - this feels kind of relevant to your situation: academia.stackexchange.com/a/102329
TL;DR - we all suck at our jobs.

@Draken What's the third one? I thought there were only two of these questions total?

5:05 PM
@TheSnarkKnight I remember that. Just scared if they get let me go coz I not good scares me coz I got bills to pay
@TheSnarkKnight time flies. It’s like I haven’t done anything and it’s already 5-6
@theonlydanever thanks. True practice beat talent. But when I get stuck practicing, I think I m not on right side
I guess I am heavily bombarded with imposter syndrome

i suffer (and have suffered) from imposter syndrome myself. it's horrible because you constantly feel like you're going to get found out. but trust me... you're the only one who feels like it. no-one else can see it.

5:31 PM
Yea they can. They can feel ur anxious and scared
At least for me

6:16 PM
@theonlydanever I've had imposter syndrome as well. For me, it got so bad that I didn't think I was worth doing anything more than mopping floors for a while.... I got better.
@Nofel......
Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. Calvin Coolidge

6:47 PM
@TheSnarkKnight u r mentor!
One thing I am too bad at estimates
What beats me is tiredness
Laziness and the thing I mentioned u in email

7:21 PM
@Nofel I don't think it's laziness so much as it is trying to escape the stress. Go right to the source and eliminate the stress. Eliminate it by not thinking of the problem, but the solution. If it's outside of your influence, do not waste a moment of time thinking about it. Clear your head of worries and distractions and proceed

7:44 PM
@TheSnarkKnight Bingo - that's what's ruined me, in my past when these feelings managed to overcome me for a while. Almost got fired because I'd just sit at my desk and spend all day panicking about how bad I was at my job and couldn't get through a long chain of code without panicking.

@TheTinyMan Didn't you have colleagues to ask? I always bother colleagues... :/

@Tinkeringbell Was too anxious at the notion that they'd judge me for needing help. Imposter syndrome and anxiety do not play nicely together.

7:59 PM
@TheTinyMan We just went through a year of being prepared to be bought out. People were panicking, people were leaving, people were worrying. It didn't phase me. Now, it turns out that we were bought because the company that bought us wants to incorporate our ways of doing things. Only a few positions (less than 30) are being eliminated, and of those, the majority of people are being assigned to new roles and anyone left gets priority in hiring to new positions within the company.
One thing I learned from my ex was the phrase "Don't Borrow Trouble"

@TheSnarkKnight That's an interesting phrase.

@TheTinyMan a little bit of country wisdom, but that is EXACTLY what worrying over things that haven't happened, and may not, is doing.

@TheSnarkKnight Yeah. I completely agree. Borrowing trouble, with a high interest rate, at that.

@TheTinyMan I borrowed my way all the way into a stroke about a decade back. No more worrying for me.

8:59 PM
He's at it again....

Q: What level of 'evidence' is required in an investigation regarding a sexually explicit blog?

user477465I recently posted a question here: I would like to know if I can report a sexually explicit blog to HR anonymously If this question is too similar to the one I posted earlier then please let me know and I'll delete this question but the reason I'm asking another question is because there were c...

Can we get some close votes? ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

done
one to go
That user is the one that asked previously about the Blog Scandal, remember?

@DarkCygnus indeed, I also flagged it for the mods
and it's been closed.

9:36 PM
Their original post is probably in need of a rather significant edit, assuming we don't just close, delete and forget about it.
There are way too many details about what's in the blog in that post, and probably the only appropriate question we can get out of that is how to report something anonymously.

2 hours later…
11:32 PM
@TheSnarkKnight I get totally lost. I don’t know what to do and where to begin. Even copying something to make it work doesn’t work for me or making sense of it.
