There's no such rule that you cannot plant a sapling in unclaimed territory and become its king, apparently.

@IDrinkandIKnowThings I asked the mods to put that notice after someone offered a bounty to that 2 year old "working with women" question thus stirring the pot.

^ and here all posts with Post Notices (annotated), neat thing that tab. I love all hidden urls that we don't know that SE sites have :3

@DarkCygnus it was super close
under a min apart.

@MaskedMan that is awesome

5:09 PM
the edit blew up my answer...

Actually I asked them to either remove the bounty or post the notice, because it made no sense to bring a controversial 2 year old question back into focus, they chose the latter.

Not sure we should edit a question so much that it invalidates answers given...
Tempted to roll that edit back

@MisterPositive ... and that's how we come a full circle on the discussion of saving questions through close votes or comments.

which edit?

Q: I can freely choose the operating system on company workstation. Any workplace concerns to be aware of?

user79637I'm taking a new job soon. The new company will let me install any operating system of my choice on the company workstation. At my current job, I was given a choice between Ubuntu and MacOS, so I am unfamiliar with having completely free rein. I use Gentoo exclusively as my daily driver at home...

the added few lines blows away the answer. The answer the OP was looking for IMO

5:11 PM
I don't think your answer is invalidated per se @MisterPositive. It only appears a bit out of focus, but it does cover the main issue.

I agree with masked

@MisterPositive The OP himself clarified what he was looking for, I just reorganized it a bit.

you only answered half the question really anyway
thats why it seems out of focus
and you answered the part that was most blatently off topic

Besides, answering poor questions without improving them carries that risk.

I remember we had that discussion yesterday on my non-serious answer to that "should I take coding test" question.
:41167026 Look it up in the edit history, the OP did add that, though not in exactly those words.

well that is the only part that brought it close enough to on topic to reopen
specific tech or policy issues are off topic

5:15 PM
@MisterPositive Anyway, you are knowledgeable enough to edit your answer to match the "improved" question.

@MaskedMan Dang, I should have done that and named it "New Kekistan"

we should invade it, conquer his kingdom, and rename it New Kekistan!
I mean it would be 2 on 1 and we aare from the US so we would have superior firepower

@MaskedMan that sounds a lot like a dare.
@MaskedMan and improved is subjective.

Also voted to Reopen the OS question
One more vote left...

Now that I had to do such a deep dive, I still think it a bit techy

5:24 PM
I helped hope you dont mind
still very applicable reguardless of what OS he chooses

Its still to techy IMHO ( the question ). Your Edit is fine @IDrinkandIKnowThings
I will not down vote or interfere in any way on this one.

@MisterPositive Its a techy question at its core, but its one that is applicable to a wide enough base that it works
you taught him how to fish in an easy way. Its a great answer i think

@MisterPositive That's why it is in quotes. ;)
@MisterPositive Take another example: flextimings. You are free to work anytime you want, but if you take that to mean you can work from 9pm to 6am, when rest of the team works somewhat more "conventional" hours, and you don't even bother checking with your manager, then you are looking for trouble. That is the core of the ideal answer IMHO, and your answer covers both parts pretty well.
"You are free to choose your own OS" means "We won't place any restrictions, but we still expect you to decide wisely". It doesn't mean "do whatever the hell you feel like doing". ;) A lot of people don't understand the difference between the two whenever any policy has "flexi" attached to it.

Q: Request to reopen question about concerns with choosing your own operating system at work

Masked ManThe previous version of this question I can freely choose the operating system on company workstation. Any concerns to be aware of? was closed as company-specific. The OP later clarified in an edit that he was looking not just at whether it was a compliance/security issue, but whether there were ...
