Hah slow day at The Workplace today. I actually managed to flag spam and see the question 5 minutes later.

user79662grs ultra changed into a particular bother for me. I see it an unprecedented offer, it's to an awesome degree cumbersome, and it can reveal to you something around grs ultra truthfulness and commitment appeared by grs ultra affiliations grs ultra make grs ultra. In grs ultra part of grs ultra sit...

I could even post a link here!

@Lilienthal Good morning. Would it be ok to remove the sticky stars from the star gallery? They've been up there for over 10 days now and that episode has long past now....

8:47 AM
Morning all.

9:03 AM
Morning

Morning @motosubatsu I managed to put up a JS counter instead of PP presentation hell
That person is a Manager of another team and I had worked with her, much respectful and understanding than my own

@Snow Done.

Q: How to deal with flaws in tests of potential employers

BryanI'm applying for a job and part of the process is to complete a coding test that passes criteria as defined by tests. The tests seem to be flawed in the sense that they are biased to a certain way of doing things, e.g. ordering output in a strange way, which causes my output with a more intuitiv...

@Nofel awesome..glad it got sorted :)

9:19 AM
Not sure why this question is getting downvotes. Seems to be a good useful question to me.
So, I posted the link to the question, and before I could submit my comment, I got distracted. :P

@Lilienthal Great, thanks!
@MaskedMan I think people are assuming that the OP can't complete the test. It's equally possible that the test is flawed or that the candidate is expected to identify and report the fact that the test is flawed (which is a good test in itself).

@Snow or possibly that it's a contrived example of an "awkward" requirement

9:42 AM
For sure. And I don't think the candidate pushing back or questioning the requirement is a necessarily bad thing.

@Snow agreed

10:01 AM
@Snow I "fixed" the question a bit to avoid that misunderstanding.
I would even say it is expected that the candidate pushes back when the question is not clear, especially at mid- to senior level programming roles. Folks who start writing code without reviewing the assumptions made in the question have "junior" written all over their face.

@MaskedMan agreed.. the "soft skill" of being able to push back/clarify any areas of concern in a spec is something I'd expect in more senior developer.

For example, I once asked an interview candidate a pretty simple question: If I give input as Hello world, your program should print 42.
Most candidates would just write an if statement and be done with it. One extraordinary guy asked me about 20 questions before he even started writing anything. :)
What is the programming language? Is the number an integer or floating point? Is the input given on the console or in a file? What is expected when the input is not Hello World? Is it expected that there will be other cases added in future? and so on ...

10:44 AM
@MaskedMan If it was a regular PM, he would say, Just F** do it or "I will do it myself"
what was ur response

@Nofel you mean a bad PM.. admittedly they are all too common, but let's call a spade a spade.

whats the last part, spade a spade
I didn't get that
@motosubatsuIf I ask those questions, at a point I would think I am dumb, and at a point I would feel I am gonna get fired or the PM gonna abuse me.

@Nofel it's just an idiom meaning to say something as it really is
@Nofel none of those are dumb questions..and I wouldn't consider a dev who asked them as dumb. The fear you feel about the PM possibly abusing you? That's a perfect example of what your current working environment has done to you right there :)

I had met only one guy who was CEO beother, and a awesome developer who was super cool, Like Once I broke a live website, I was hesitant to ask first but I asked coz he had non angry nature, he was good with DB so he replaced with old db and even though I was laid off by "u should be giving us money not we giving it to u", he thanked me for telling me things he didn't know, although he was a champion of that framwork but he thanked me for bits a bob and how I know little detail snr dev misses
yes I something imagine in my mind, my PM hitting me for asking dumb question
like @TheSnarkKnight said, this job has affected my marital life. All I care about of getting enough sleep to wake up on time and not miss train

@Nofel I know all too well how bad jobs can affect your "real life" like that.. give it 3-6months in the new place and you'll feel so much better :)

10:55 AM
Hope so, In my religion there is a thing where u can ask Allah to guide u and it comes in many shapes, dreams, people advise etc. It is a special prayer u read out before off to bed
last night I saw a strange dream
It mind sound funny or unrealistic but it is something in my religion

@Nofel not at all, while not a believer myself I still have the utmost respect for the beliefs of others and it sounds like a wonderful thing for you

@Nofel I answered the questions he asked. For the candidates who dont ask questions, I give them "counterexamples" to break their code.

I get heads up sometimes
and this time it is so hard.
@motosubatsu If I do good in new job, I will be lead dev in 6 months

For example, one guy wrote an if statement in Python. I looked at the code, and remarked, "Oh, Python? We don't use Python." Then it occured to him to ask, "Which language should I use?"

@MaskedMan like @motosubatsu said, I have dreaded to ask such questions fearing a misfire which will put me misery
e.g once I didn't understand the scope of this and I shared with my colleague next o me, he didn't rectified me well bt told it to PM, when I was laid off, that was one reason given to me

11:18 AM
@Nofel I'm glad to see when someone doesn't repeat my mistakes. Good luck with the new job

@Nofel I know of your issues with your PM. You just got stuck with a bad PM. Hopefully, you can put it behind now.

@TheSnarkKnight we all r humans, If I say that I will be smarter at my new job and not repeat my mistakes of etting my guard off will be wrong thing. we learn and filter out
@MaskedMan I reflect on my yrs and what started it, It isn't the first one (current one), it is over span of time but like I said I had some great ones but I blame myself too as few recuiter got me in a bad spot with good people which ended bad (laid off and reason was u should give money to us not us to u")
being here has made me learn to keep my head down and rock on, give ur best.f** the rest

@Nofel I was very concerned because I saw where you were heading in that old job. Like I said, I did the same thing, but went all the way to losing my job, my family, my home and my mind. No doubt, they are freaking out at losing you, better they lose their minds than you lose yours

I use to or wanted to become full stack bt I gave up on that and reduced my area of expertise and unless I m expert in that, I won't look for another subject
e.g I told my manger how to talk on CROS (server to server), bt I cannot implement it coz of lack of hands on knowledge, so now I will talk only what I can apply and If i can talk I will apply it
@TheSnarkKnight thanks, here I found fountain of hope and advise otherwise I would have suicided my career without having another
the next one will be hard but I am ready to take it on head on and turnaround what I don't know instead of listening to "don't do that, u will break it" when I know I wouldn't

11:36 AM
@Nofel I'm very glad you listened to us. It was breaking my heart to see them doing that to you.

I saw that "don't do that" creep into my life, I started saying my toddler, "don't touch that u will break it" and my marital life flames going off
@TheSnarkKnight Inside I feel scared of thing I donno abt of new job bt I tell myself, Either I can take mental posion here and be dead mentally n spiritual or I can take a wild ride and even if I get laid off in next one, I will take away what I don't know to jon the missing puzzle

@Nofel "Don't do that" is about the most toxic thing you can be fed. As you may have guessed, I can be a bit brash, bold, outspoken, and at times obnoxious. For a programmer, these are GOOD THINGS. You need to be brash enough to make mistakes. If you don't make mistakes, you don't learn, if you don't learn, you don't innovate. Go in, be BOLD have the attitude of "I can't believe they pay me to do this" and READ THOSE BOOKS!!! ;_
:)

What was the book that u told me last week
yesterday*
I have 3 person on my list of twitter for instant notification for fueling up (twitter.com/RobinSharma) [Robin Sharma]
damn it
how do u put hyper link

@Nofel it's "Rhinoceros success"

first 2 has been the most best people in my life to change me
next to u @TheSnarkKnight

11:45 AM
@Nofel :D

I am dying to read "5AM club", it is not coming out until end of 2018
I so wanna wake up at 5AM
my religion tell us to wake up before the sun shines hit the sky
it is so hard

@Nofel My cat must be sent by Allah then, because she makes sure I always do

@motosubatsu got the invite from that smat cookie
hahah good one
I seen myself performance peak If I wake at 4 or 5

12:00 PM
@TheSnarkKnight key point that my mrs said, "After all those pain and stress u did project and now when it is time to enjoy and relax. ur going off"
which was like, she is right
I can just stay here coz no stress until whatever and earn money
why risk what I know 50%

@Nofel you did the right thing. All the break would do is give you more time to worry about the next thing they pull on you.

12:12 PM
This is the best thing happened happiest.net/2016/12/02/…

1:03 PM
@DarkCygnus Ha, yeah, there are a lot of other David users out there. I've even seen another "David K" with the default avatar, which gets confusing.
Hell, there are four Davids on this floor of my office.

@DavidK I once worked in a small company where 3 of the 12 employees were called "Andy", much confusion and amusement ensued :)

My BA has just been complaining that the BI team is getting currency exchange calculations wrong. So he asked me to help. So I sent him some SQL that calculates to his specs. "No, they're wrong too". And then "Oh, now my calculations don't make sense either...!"

1:23 PM
@Snow The question is, are your calculations the same "wrong" as the BA's?

hahah
@Snow I been failing in my maths exams and just to find out after dropout there is a think called DMAS
which no one told me

1:59 PM
Greetings peeps

about lunch time, did u bring cookies? @MisterPositive

Uh, I was wrong in trying to save that "unique elements in array" question.
@Snow I can now understand what it means to delete your own answer.

@MaskedMan I generally do so freely. Unless I happen to have streams of negativity.

Well, at least I got the Disciplined badge for it. :P

2:14 PM
Shame that it's a single-use badge, or I would have a lot more bronzes.
One of my answers has 10 downvotes, but it was tagged as an accepted answer, so....

Cookies for all.
check your mail box

They're in my junk folder, what are you trying to feed me?

chocolate chip?
@MaskedMan What's up?

@MisterPositive Just got a new badge. ;)

Nice. Which one?

2:21 PM
Disciplined

Very good

That's one more baby step taken today towards the exit.

@MaskedMan the exit??

Yeah, I have got a bunch of goals to achieve on this site. Once I am done with those, I will leave this place.
Inquisitive is going to be hard to get. There's just one user who has got that so far!

Who's trying for "Tumbeweed"?

2:25 PM
my favorite

@Snow No chance of anyone getting it!
On a bikeshed site like ours, it would be impossible to not get a single comment or answer.
It would be Beyond the Impossible on IPS.

@MaskedMan We will miss you when your gone.

@MisterPositive Oh, I am sure you will. :) Thanks for the compliment.
I am not going any time soon though. Legendary badge is one of the items on my checklist.

There are a few folks that if they left I would not mind ( or even grin a bit )
you are not one of those.

Those who want to see me gone early, upvote all my answers and get me to Legendary faster lol

2:31 PM
LOL
Same!

Can we morph into a whole and combine our reps to beat Joe?
I'll be the head end.

I don't think all of us in the room can do that...

@Snow Not a chance! Then Joe will just summon his reputation "lost" due to repcap.
His "lost" reputation is close to 100k by now, I think.

yeah, I had the goal of getting more rep than some, but I don't think I will have the patience to crack the top 10

Oh, I have given up on that already. I now look forward to giving away bounties to deserving answers.

2:46 PM
I am out of the bounty business until I clip 20K
30 K
rather
86 out of 150 for legendary

I plan to give up all my reputation above 20K. But only to newish users with worthy answers.

so mabye in another 2 years....

@MaskedMan Joe wouldn't summon Rep, Rep summons Joe
We have rep points only because the original measure was to be Joe, and everyone would be rated as a percentage. Then they found that they would run out of memory calculating that many decimal points.

@MaskedMan I see what you did there

@TheSnarkKnight strange it might sound, but where I got the new offer is place I am fond of very much and the near school for my toddler is the same which I saw once and I was "wow".
it is really ....

2:57 PM
@TheSnarkKnight Are you causing trouble elsewhere sir?

If only @MaskedMan rep can gimme good raise . I would take it

@MisterPositive I'm shocked at that accusation. I cause trouble everywhere.
Why am I thinking of Jeffry Colms portrayal of "The Question"

@TheSnarkKnight because JLU was awesome and the Question was probably the best thing about it?

@motosubatsu

SG: were you going through my trash?

Q: Don't be absurd. I go through everybody's trash
@MisterPositive Im actually far more dangerous when I am not trying to cause trouble.

LOL
Looks like the fireworks have subsided...

3:11 PM
@TheSnarkKnight I've always been a big fan of the Question and of course of his slightly more extreme expy Rorschach

@MisterPositive I always know I've scored a direct hit when I'm not acknowledged.
@motosubatsu the way JC played the part was priceless.
esp when he tried to kill Luthor!

@TheSnarkKnight totally :) I love the way they handled it when he'd come out with some insane-sounding theory (e.g. that Supergirl was a clone) and everyone would give him patronising looks only for him to be proved right
as a tangent the voice cast as a whole for JLU was fantastic.. and there are some surprisingly big names in there as well

morning

morning sir.

3:24 PM
@motosubatsu I loved the one involving the girl scouts.
@ChrisE good morning

@TheSnarkKnight it's cheesy as anything but I loved the Christmas special

Sometimes I should not read recent chat messages without understanding the context...

it's practically required viewing at Christmas as far as I'm concerned
@Snow lol

We're talking about the Star Wars Christmas Special, right?

morning everyone

Q: How to explain past PhD withdrawal to employers?

omegaSQU4REDI am currently working in education but also looking for job prospects in more technical/mathematical fields. I signed up to a STEM job site and I am not sure how to give a good response to the question "Could you tell me about the circumstances behind you exiting your PhD?" Basically, I quit a...

The real comedy there is "I know the reasons in my head for dropping out of the PhD are sound" in the question....

@Snow ugh.. don't even mention that abomination! it's the only thing that prevents the execrable Attack of the Clones from being the Worst. Thing. Ever. in the Star Wars filmography

@motosubatsu you can't call yourself a fan without watching it.

@MisterPositive was the sign that indicated The Point as being 47 miles in the opposite direction not a clue? :D

@motosubatsu Sometimes my drinking affects my judgement. (joke)

3:39 PM
@Snow yeah I saw that and chuckled
@MisterPositive Fortunately I've managed to limit my inebriated SE actions to chat. God knows what I would end up posting as actual answers if I tried that while under the influence!
^ in case it wasn't clear there I understand you were joking and weren't actually drunk
@Snow the whole thing is like a patchwork quilt made out of several different people's acid trips. Only weirder.

lol I have never experienced this diversity (not a brag though):
Funny thing I just got 1 answer on Fantasy
and it was several months ago

4:22 PM
Why do I keep thinking that PTO stands for "Please Turn Over"?

I had PTO once. about 16 years ago.

@Snow haha..not just me then!
I think it's because it's such an Americanism

4:37 PM
@Snow I think Patent and Trademark Office as well.

@Snow I saw the starwars Christmas special or "Life Day" special. It is cruel thing to do to someone with an eidetic memory

@TheSnarkKnight what has been seen cannot be unseen

@motosubatsu I can at least chase it away with Jeffrey Combs portrayal of The Question.

(in my Professor Farnsworth voice) Good news everyone!
Charlie Manson is dying!

Alright guys, have a good evening or day wherever you are.

4:51 PM
you too nofel

5:06 PM
@Nofel chin up, good luck, and READ THE BOOKS!

2 hours later…
6:40 PM
So I slapped an answer to help the OP on a legal like question that I just so happen to have experience with. From a community perspective, is that ok or should I have just provided the info in comments? @TheSnarkKnight @ChrisE
[crickets]

doesn't really matter
it's about to be closed anyway

but for future reference, is it gong to cause grief later?

@MisterPositive if you want to answer there is nothing stopping you. You may get grief if you post trash. Even though the question is off topic (and some users prefer to refrain from answering them) it is noble and useful for the OP to get at least one answer before they shut down and burn their post
Bonus points if you get the Reversal Gold Badge
lol, someone retracted their close vote

@DarkCygnus Thanks. I try to just help

wrote answer and meant question, sorry
@MisterPositive (y)

6:45 PM
@DarkCygnus I got your meaning, and feel the same way.

I also sometimes like casting close vote AND answering
this is a comment answer

A: Can a company recoup money from a interviewee?

user79695I am new in the HR roll and I schedule a lot of out of state interviews and it was my thought what if....so I asked it they have a doc in place just in case an interviewee is a no call no show. I will see about reaching out to the legal dept. thanks for your feed back

yep. it is...

and it is now closed
It looks like IPS is absorbing a lot of the posts that would have cluttered TWP. This is a good thing.

7:17 PM
@TheSnarkKnight I just hope they can handle it.

8:03 PM
@MisterPositive should have left your answer. It seemed useful to me.
IMHO, unless your answer is getting downvoted into oblivion, there's no reason to delete most answers, even if it's a pretty lousy question.

A: How to deal with someone ignoring meeting room etiquette

user3574492How I would say it: Hey c***s***er I've booked this meeting room so get the f*** out! Book the room next time you want to use it. Douchebag! Also don't leave biscuit crumbs all over the desk and clean up that Marmite before you leave..... A**hole!. How you should say it: Hey I don't m...

Interesting thing happened here
The first part of that answer should be deleted, the second part is good advice

@DarkCygnus I think that's our old friend "doritostyle"

8:22 PM
If he wants to post a serious answer, then he can do that. But it's not our job to sanitize his trolling, which is why I flagged it as rude.

@ChrisE I put in the last flag. It's been deleted as rude or abusive. Let him take the rep hit if he wants to be a jerk.

His responses in commentary made it clear he was trolling. It's like what children do. "I did a good thing, so you should over look the intentional bad thing"

8:49 PM
@ChrisE yeah, he was being a real... well... be nice rule and all.....

he was being disruptive. :)

whats up with the user on suspension
Viethni or whatever
Already out of the box?

@DarkCygnus AGAIN????? He spends more time on suspension than he does posting.

Not sure, asking you guys
well, seems that he is still locked down

I think he posts a few good answers to throw people off the scent, and then posts abuse hoping nobody will notice.

8:51 PM
How much rep he had anyways?
im guessing
50k? ish?
more?

@DarkCygnus he was up there. about the same as me.

Vietni doesn't get out until late january

@ChrisE I wonder what he did this time.

9:09 PM
I don't remember. I think it was just more of the same.

@TheSnarkKnight I don't think he hope's no one will notice, I think he just doesn't care.
He's got the bluntness of Kilisi, just more

imo Kilisi knows when to be blunt, seems he selects the questions he wants to answer carefully
but you must not be blunt just for the sake of it

@DarkCygnus Right. Bluntness has a place and a time. Unfortunately some people think that i's everywhere and always.

Yeah, I wished I had Blunts everywhere and always...
oh wait, did you mean... nvmd ;)

LOL

9:14 PM
xD haha

@DavidK Yeah, Kilisi and I share the bluntness gene. His is more due to the fact that he is not a native speaker of English, whereas with me, it's in my neurology.

One of those things I've always wanted to try, if not for the fact that my job has random drug tests.

Why are blunts called blunts? Do they put you in a Blunt state? Does Kilisi smokes Blunts before answering? Will Viethni come back to wreck havoc again? Did Nofel break another kettle?.... find this AND MORE on the next episode of ..... Da Workplace

@TheSnarkKnight I'm pretty sure it's more than just the language.

@DavidK that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

9:17 PM
Kilisi seems really tough on his avatar Just saying
I can bet he is similar IRL, but also a nice guy
I can also bet he can serve strong drinks
And talk bluntly while serving them

@DarkCygnus For some reason I always picture him holding a machete out of frame

(Sorry, I am in the middle of transitioning between projects, make me somewhat erratic)

I think it's the jungle vibe he's got behind him

Yeah, Jungle vibe
and his tattoos

I ought to put up a picture of me some day. See if it's how y'all imagine I'd look

9:20 PM
For all we know, he could probably just be grilling some meat on his backyard ... but I like the Jungle and Machete idea more :)

Alright, I've got a bus to catch. Go grab a blunt without me.

Godspeed David

night David
