12:04 AM
Got a Populist huh @DavidK :)
see you tomorrow guys

12:41 AM
@GrayCygnus Yeah, it's ridiculous on a site like this to allow immediate acceptances. It makes sense for SO but not here. I think 6 hours at least, if not more.

1:17 AM
aw dammit. I said "hear" and not "here" and I can't even delete it. That sucks.

1 hour later…
2:36 AM
@ChrisE I dont know what you are talking about :)

3:11 AM
@enderland talk about putting words into someone's mouth. :P

3 hours later…
5:46 AM
Question: How do I tell someone I want X?
Answer: Just tell them you want X.
- Questions that bug me endlessly.

1 hour later…
6:59 AM
I am WFH today with a stinking head cold. Even the dog won't come near me.

1 hour later…
8:15 AM
@GrayCygnus I used to have 3 monitors at one job... it was awesome! Then I went to one where all I had was a 15" laptop screen with a crap resolution, it was utterly awful trying to code on it.
@SnarkShark Ugh..you have my sympathies. My cold/sinus infection from the other week is mostly gone but seemingly refuses to go away entirely

I have dual 24" monitors at work. Having just the laptop screen right now is pretty rough.

@SnarkShark it's so hard to go back to just the one isn't it? Other than the stint at my last company I've had dual monitors (or more) for working on for the last 15 years

And I've now converted over to a completely flat keyboard. Helped my wrists no end.

@SnarkShark I find the reverse to be true... I'm much faster typing on a flat keyboard but my wrists hate me for it. MS "Natural" style all the way for me

I did try one of those a few years back, I really couldn't get used to it. I think I'm used to my hands automatically crossing over that YHB line while I'm typing. I never did learn how to tough type properly.

8:28 AM
@SnarkShark I started using them about 15-16 years ago when a doctor advised me to as I was developing early signs of carpal tunnel in my right wrist. I hated it at first - took me ages to get the hang of them. I never got anywhere near my old speed but I never had problems with my wrist while using them

Yeah. the flat keyboard cured my wrist pains. Someone at work uses the natural keyboard, she broke her wrist a few years ago and never regained full use.

@SnarkShark I think like many things there's no "one-size-fits-all" keyboard, flat ones cure your pain and cause mine :)

Thankfully, I'm not left-handed enough to need a left-handed mouse though.

@SnarkShark haha..whenever I've had to use a mouse set up for lefties I'm remarkably clumsy
about the only thing worse is me trying to write with my left hand, there are 4 yr olds with neater handwriting than my left can produce

Yeah, It's weird how that works, isn't it? We're not all DaVincis.
Man it's slow today. Where is everyone?

8:42 AM
yeah it's quiet.. too quiet

hello everybody
@motosubatsu @SnarkShark hi

Hello Mr Spring.

Guten Morgen Herr SpringLearner

@motosubatsu are you german?

nah.. but I've got a smattering of the language and sometimes I mix it up for the hell of it. apologies for the confusion!

8:50 AM
I got reply from the VP yesterday and the message is as below
Here is a short review
-Tech. Knowledge is set up in specific areas which is not commonly used in our organization.
-we wont be able to able to satisfy your approach in continue focusing on both front end and back end development.
-Lacking of design expertise which is required in our organization.
Please not that it is not about your abilities and knowledge but about how does your current experience suits to our needs

Seems fair enough, and good of him to reply. It's not common for failed candidates to know what the reasons for rejections are. You can now move on.

@SpringLearner I'll second @SnarkShark - that's a good reply

can you please guide how should I reply him? During the interview he asked me which one I would like to work front end or back end?I said I am ok for the both. BUt he must have understood that I want both

@SpringLearner tbh this doesn't really need a reply, except possibly a short one liner thanking him for taking the time to mail you
please don't see this as an opening to try and salvage the job opportunity - it really isn't one.

Yes, that's all you can do. Just a short thanks for the reply. There's no need to contact him again after that.

8:55 AM
ok
thanks
why do you think its not required to contact him again. I am thinking if I stay in contact then he may refer to any other opening if he has got any in future

@SpringLearner on reflection not contacting him is possibly not correct, the more I think about it the more I think a simple "thank you" email is best. You're leaving it on good terms and if future opportunities come up and you apply for them he will hopefully remember you positively
If by "staying in contact" you mean more than that.. then no I wouldn't advise it

Because he'll feel that you're harassing him for job opportunities. He's been really polite with you so far, but that will only go so far.

ok now I understand

Rejection is a huge part of hunting for jobs. As much as we think we'll find a great job, that doesn't often happen. Just shrug it off and move on to the next opportunity.

yep what @SnarkShark said

9:03 AM
thank you both for guiding me

@SpringLearner it's what we're here for :)

You're welcome. We wish you luck for your continuing search for a great job!

9:15 AM
Wow, I actually got so bored that I answered the obvious fake question about the deaf guy....

9:25 AM
@SnarkShark that's a new low.. admittedly the pickings are slim this week
it's good answer though
I keep scouring the question list hoping it changes and something interesting crops up. It's starting to feel like when you keep re-checking the fridge hoping that somehow, through magic something you actually want to eat has appeared
it's not helping that I'm not in a great place this week and could really do with the distraction

Would you like me to dance for you?

@SnarkShark that would be great.. probably a little bit disturbing, creepy even, but great nontheless

The big downside to working at home is that I can't snack.

@SnarkShark isn't the reverse normally true?

Not here. My SO is home.

9:34 AM
when I'm WFHing my consumption of snacks/coffee/cigs increases massivelt
@SnarkShark ahh, I understand

Huh. Mr DV has started his shift.

@SnarkShark joy! I'll batten down the hatches and find something solid to hang on to

9:53 AM
@Dukeling Small correction: Take your head out of your ... uhm, smartphone and just tell them you want X. I think a lot of these communication issues that look silly and trivial to oldies like me is because people these days are way too busy looking into their smartphone and don't really know how to talk to a human face to face.

If anyone is tired of seeing obvious questions here, they should go visit IPS for a while. You'll soon be back here again.

@SnarkShark I've tried looking on IPS a few times this week.. but my slapping hand starts to itch whenever I do

I know. Especially the recent trend for "how can I avoid being polite" questions.

@SnarkShark indeed.. they make me wish for a device that allows you to strangle other people through the internet
I've been dabbling over on mechanics a bit this week, there's some frighteningly simple questions from people over there. How they are ever allowed to drive is as mysterious as it is worrying

10:10 AM
We should be thankful to IPS for taking away a lot of our HNQ traffic though.

@MaskedMan true.. it does act as a bit of a sponge for some of that

10:31 AM
The amusing thing about ISP is that it feels like most of the responses there come from people with some kind of social disorder.
And the people who complain about the simplicity of it either forgot what it was like to be young, or have the advantage of all this stuff being natural to them ;)
What I mean about responses is that they all read like learned behavior, btw. These are people (including myself) who had to learn social interaction the hard way.

10:52 AM
I have a good question for IPS. I will ask it some time over the long weekend, if I find some time. It is Diwali time here in India, so my work week ends today. :)

Going to enjoy the celebrations? :)
Festival of lights, right?

@Erik Thanks. Yes, festival of lights. Fun times for shopping. :)

11:21 AM
Can someone tell me what the heck a "Data Science" is?
is that different from a data analyst?
Seems like lipstick on a pig to me...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_science especially the part about "Criticism", I guess.

a buzz word it is I see

@MisterSortofPositive it's just a bit of a buzz word for something people have been doing for decades
same as "cloud" computing

yep....
lipstick on a pig
:-}

Can I get a badge for downvoting 3 answers on a single question? I did that here just now. :(

Q: How do I ask a friendly coworker to remind me what their name is?

TheSoundDefenseI have a coworker at my place of work that I am somewhat friendly with. Often times when I pass his desk, we'll both say hi and talk for a couple minutes about this or that. We're not exactly close friends, but it's fun talking to him. I cannot remember his name. As far as I can tell, there is ...

11:26 AM
That would earn me a lot of badges...

11:48 AM
I just cast 3 delete votes as well there.
@GrayCygnus That question is a good example of why "protected" should be renamed to "restricted". :) Clearly, protection hasn't prevented poor answers from being posted.
Of course, this is mostly for academic interests and our own amusement, since SE has clearly drawn a line in the sand on that request.

@MaskedMan Same
3 DELETE votes. Taking out the trash...
@SnarkShark Your lead in gold badges is back down to two....

Huh. Well, I'm closing down on Electorate, I'll get my safety zone back...

NO!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh well.
you are the gold medal snark master, sir.

There's fewer decent questions being asked of late though. I was very surprised to get my latest gold.

yes....lots of garbage on the heap right now...

12:04 PM
Especially when people go around boringifying question titles to remove click-bait...
27 days away from fanatic, 145 votes away from Electorate (now that I finally figured out how that badge works)
And 445 flags away from Marshal. I'll never get that one.

I'm 73 days away from Fanatic :D

@GrayCygnus 100 upvotes?!
It's not even that good of an answer, but I guess that's the power of HNQ for you.
It's crazy when I sign in and I've already rep-capped for the day before I can do anything.

12:21 PM
@DavidK I've had that a couple of times.. it's a nice "problem" to have isn't it?

12:32 PM
But now I have no motivation to make any posts today.
Except for "helping people". Psshh, it's all about the rep.

@DavidK I made peace with the repcap by looking at it as a way to let others help people. And of course, it reminds me that I have a life outside Workplace.

Traitor. There is no life outside WP.
7
Educate this man. Unleash the cattle-prods.

12:56 PM
@SnarkShark Electorate? Eeeek. The whole theory of popular votes is bunk by the way.
I may not rep cap today at this rate...

You're too late in begging me for votes today. I have already cast my 40.

LOL
There is no begging sir.
I only Plead.
not beg

1:16 PM
@MaskedMan @MisterSortofPositive I periodically go to the last page of negative scores and have a nice little delete romp.
@SnarkShark I think I've only maxed out my voting a couple of times.
Strange, an old, very old question of mine on SO was down-voted.

Where are my upvotes?

@TheSnarkKnight I believe that @MisterSortofPositive wishes to canvas for your votes.

That is not what I said @SnarkShark
I may have implied that....LOL
weak day today thus far.

I know you like the back of my hairy right hand....

1:23 PM
@MisterSortofPositive you generally give good advice.

@TheSnarkKnight Thanks! Coming from you that means a lot.

Hey, anyone notice that the heavy politicking by the SJW types just sort of up and vanished? Did we scare them off?

I was waiting for @TheSnarkKnight to say the same thing about me. Nope, didn't happen!

Sexy Java Wizards
I thought everyone knew that.

1:26 PM
@SnarkShark Nope.
Nothing sexy about Java anymore..

@MisterSortofPositive or ever really.

Cough medication is giving me those haluco-thingies...

@motosubatsu True....at one time I could see the appeal....
but not now.

@SnarkShark just keep calm and ignore the purple unicorn

for any reason
did someone say cookies?
Where is the MILK Guy?

1:29 PM
@motosubatsu I'm extremely concerned that you can see a purple unicorn....
It's not my purple unicorn, no sir...!

@MisterSortofPositive I quite liked it when I was first learning it many, many years ago. Then I learnt C# and realised that it had everything I liked about Java and more, plus far fewer annoyances
@SnarkShark don't be, that's just Brian. As long as you don't have to deal with him when he's hungover he's not such a bad guy. Gives terrible advice though.

@motosubatsu and the debug environment isn't even close...

@MisterSortofPositive amen to that.. even more so in my case as the "IDE" they gave us for Java was emacs running on a Solaris thin client <shudder />

@motosubatsu I just threw up a bit....

debugging consisted of lots and lots of System.out.println statements (or System.err.println)

1:31 PM
it was ridiculous...
JetBrains has up'd the ENV, but Java is going down down down

@MisterSortofPositive indeed.. I suppose that experience did help me out when I got stuck working in classic ASP for a few years

@motosubatsu I liked Classic ASP :-}

@MisterSortofPositive what kind of sick weirdo are you?!?

I still do plenty with classis asp.

@SnarkShark did you piss someone off?

1:34 PM
it was inherited code.

@motosubatsu Your kind. ;-} It was easy
@SnarkShark Happens to all of us sir

I hated my Classic ASP Purgatory with a passion.. like you @SnarkShark I got trapped with dealing with a whacking great inherited code base that had the organisation and structure of a bowl of spaghetti and the stability of a house of cards on boat caught in a hurricane
After spending four years learning and working with strongly typed OOP languages at uni to spending another 50 years trapped in that freak show was something of a culture shock to say the least! :D

@motosubatsu How do you really feel about Classic ASP. Come on, be honest now...

@MisterSortofPositive lol

IF I was rep capped I would down vote 2 of them
maybe all three

1:59 PM
@MisterSortofPositive chucked my own weak answer in the mix
it wasn't intentionally weak you understand.. I just don't seem to have my head in the game this week
@MisterSortofPositive good answer on this one mate:

Q: How to ask current company if they want to hire me and how to handle different company offer

anon99I'm currently doing an internship in a company. Supposedly, after finishing the internship they are going to hire me, that's what the told me when I first had the interview, but the thing is that I have no physical proof of that. In the meantime, I have a friend that told me that in their compan...

@motosubatsu Thanks

2:15 PM
Hey guys

Good day to you @Nofel

good day, not for me

@Nofel what's up?

TL and deadlone, he asked for some visual changes that they like on tablet. ~I said it wouldnt look good on desktop
now it is there he is mumbling about what u have done
should have shown before making it

@Nofel my dad was a toolmaker. His boss started criticizing his work. My dad shut down his machinery and invited his boss to do better.

2:19 PM
@Nofel was device detection not an option?

@Nofel Hello Milk man!

usig bootstrap
I told him on his face
we cannot work like on fly
he say this
you say this
@TheSnarkKnight I really wanna do that.
I shld email him
I wanna take a leave
like the guy he mocked me I guess
while i said we should do it in Phase 2, he was like shaking his head saying "We should hae done that already@
lol I had to tell my TL and "senior" what is a document and window
like LMAO
@TheSnarkKnight I would but I believe I am underskilled
like a recruiter haven't gotten back to me after having my cv
every1 is silent
hello?

2:43 PM
It's a tough situation. Whats the way forwards?

I fear I might be not good
and might not be able to pass next probation
maybe

@Nofel Sorry to hear...

Honestly @Nofel the solution remains the same - you need to get out. You've clearly got some good front-end dev skills and yeah the economy isn't exactly racing along at the moment but your skills are in demand and I honestly think you'll be so much happier working somewhere else

The way I lost 2-3 jobs
I am scared
but than again it was php job
I dont have latest skills in front end
like eact
angular4
I do have JS, CSS, Sass

you don't always need the latest though.. the way the JS frameworks in particular move so rapidly means that there's always something of a lag in adoption. Plus companies that have adopted them usually allow for some expectation that not all candidates are going to have experience with them
I appreciate that it's scary, believe me I do but if the worst happens and you need to hunt for something else then you'll be in a worse position - job hunting is much easier when you already have a job. So getting a few balls rolling now is basically all upside for you

2:54 PM
my mrs say u lack politics and diplomacy
while he is mumbling and cursing when u do something or wrong
he wont say same with other dev which is lifeline

@Nofel is she suggesting you lack those things?

yes
she says u need to learn that is why God put u with dumb people to learn
they dont knw half of what u know and yet they r bolder than u

if I'm being frank you are possibly a bit lacking in those areas, but so are many people and you have come on massively over the last few months from what I can see. And honestly it wouldn't be a big deal if you weren't working for an asshole

Q: Avoiding “bullshit jobs” as a mathematician

BubayaBy the term bullshit job, I refer to the notion coined in David Graeber's article. By bullshit job, he means some contrary of useful and enriching our society. Since I just finished my Master's degree in mathematics, I am currently looking for employment. It seems to me that the typical employ...

He wants me write down step by step steps of how to deploy ur changes on live if ur not in

2:59 PM
I've never been good at playing the workplace politics game, I'm a straightforward sort of person, add in my autism and anxiety and I generally struggle in environments where it is a large factor, but they really aren't representative of all workplaces.

and he said step by step
as in making sure.

@Nofel that's not an unreasonable request - that's just documentation to mitigate the bus factor

not me for, when I am at other side, I need to figure it out.
just saying.
even in morning I had quarrel coz he said u spend 5 days (he included weekend) to get it working
yet ur not near, that is when I raise Q abt server out of memory issue

@DavidK I need to post a Q on meta about Avoiding "bullshit questions" as a TWP user
@Nofel did I mention that this guy is an asshole yet? pretty sure I did

hahah yes
I called myself a asshole too
while talking to my mrs in morning
telling he is blaming things on me
and I am an asshole too

3:06 PM
this is the danger of staying in a shitty, toxic environment like this - after enough time of some asshole telling you that you suck you start to believe it, even though if you were able to step back and look at it rationally (imagine a friend describing the same situation to you) you can clearly see it for the utter bullshit it really is

I fear what if I don't get as PM I do here
in new place

in a very real sense it's the same mechanism that causes people to stay in abusive relationships

freaking direct debits gonna suck me

@Nofel PM?

per month

3:08 PM
@DavidK Voted to DELETE

@Nofel gotcha.. then all you need to do is work out what wage you need to cover your outgoings and when negotiating salary you don't move below your minimum
at the moment what's happening is that you're afraid, this is totally normal and healthy. Where it goes bad is when you let that fear rule you.

Keep in mind that you're essentially trading your sanity for money. If you make $200 a month more in this job than you would in another, you are valuing your sanity as being worth $200 a month. Personally, I think my sanity is more valuable than even an entire month's salary ;)

@MisterSortofPositive I VTC'd and DV'd it, can't vote to delete it yet (I'm a rep-peasant)

@motosubatsu LOL

@Erik this, a thousand-thousand times THIS

3:10 PM
@Erik GeNiUs

@Erik there is no surity if that place will be more mad or good

Unless you're blindly picking a new job, yeah there is: the interview process

@MisterSortofPositive I think you need to rename yourself to "Ask your Manager". It'll make typing your answers a little quicker.
2

@Nofel I know I'm just some randomer on the internet and I know I sounds like a broken record on this subject but the consequences of toxic work environments on your mental health are very, very real and very, very severe. I experienced two of them back-to-back. My health disintegrated, all my significant relationships failed or disappeared, oh and I washed down half a packet of paracetamol with a bottle of Jack Daniels. GET OUT NOW

My hair r turning white.
fast
lol

3:16 PM
That's not really something to "lol" about...

@Nofel yeah it could be as bad, or it could be worse. Those are possibilities but that's all they are. That your current one sucks and is damaging your mental health is a certainty. In those cases I'll take another roll of the dice any day of the week

@SnarkShark You sound bitter sir.
considering I am 115 shy of re capping, and you probably did that before you got it....

what do u mean by roll of the dice

I'm nowhere near rep-capping today.

@MisterSortofPositive If I had the rep I would. I was wondering how quickly we would get it deleted.
And Monica with the delete hammer does it!

3:20 PM
@SnarkShark Better?

@motosubatsu^

"A roll of the die" means literally just accepting the next job without even looking. And yeah, statistically, even that is likely to be an improvement over where you are now.

did you feel the disturbance in the force...

There was a rumble in my jungle, yes. I thank you, Sir.

you have rep capped so much recently I just assumed you had...

3:22 PM
@Erik actually I met it more in the sense that taking any new job is always like a roll of the dice. You don't know until you are there whether it is mediocre (like rolling a 3), dire (like rolling a 1) or brilliant (a 6), but if your current job is a 2 you really don't have much to lose

Not today. My latest popular answer has all dried up now it's not HNQ any more.

I agree if you're just going to accept without looking, but it's not like you have no idea what you're going in to if you're doing the interviews properly.

That's me capped, the rumbling may now die down. Thank you very much.

I'm not suggesting you should blindly take the first thing that comes along though - you can take a sensible approach and try and get a feel for whether you want to work there

You should have at least some idea of the situation

3:24 PM
I still have a long way to go. may not make it today. oh well
for real!

And while you are currently employed (and therefore the bills are getting paid) you can afford to be choosier about it. When you're out of work and desperate for something, anything to pay the bills you have to lower your standards which lets some of those 1s and 2s creep in that you would normally run screaming from.

@Erik I traded my sanity for money, and lost both

@motosubatsu I am lost sorry

@TheSnarkKnight Yeah. Being/going insane is not good for your financial situation either.

@Nofel I think you are far more skilled than you give yourself credit for being. Move on. It sounds like literally ANYWHERE would be better than you are now, and be AGGRESIVE about it.

3:28 PM
@Nofel apologies.. for clarity: Job hunting while you already have a job is good because a) you are more likely to get the job and b) you can afford to turn down jobs that don't seem like a good fit

@Erik well, all that lesson cost me was every last dollar I ever had, plus debt, plus divorce, plus every seeing my kids. Other than that, it was a good trade

Heh. A bonus two badges. I wasn't expecting that.

@TheSnarkKnight at least you got that natty T-shirt

@MaskedMan yeah I already tried to ask them and wasn't taken gladly I am afraid
@DavidK yeah, the power of hnq. You also got the populist badge I guess, because you are x2 of the accepted answer
good morning all btw :)

Morning.
@TheSnarkKnightjust found a job and looks like all people are moving fast connectchildcare.com/careers/javascript-developer
I can say I know HTML, CSS and JS
rest nope

3:33 PM
if you know JS you can easily get RESTful

@Nofel go for literally anything else. You are a bad fit where you are and it's a TOXIC environment. Please learn from my mistakes.

RESTful API's aren't too complicated, basically just HTTP calls that generally return JSON objects. An hour or so reading will give you the basic concept and enough knowledge to get through most interview questions

yep, agree with Moto

SQL is a bit more complex but I doubt they are looking for anything complicated given the other skills, most likely they are looking for the basics of SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE queries and a weekend (at most) playing with the guides on W3Schools will give you the basics

the only "hard" part is that it is some sort of different Paradigm than classic js/html

3:37 PM
@motosubatsu I am enrolled myself in Full stack JS course
u study a course, make a project and if u passthen next stage open
every unit has some project

That job looks to have good perks and some good learning opportunities. If I were you I'd be giving the CV a quick polish and sending it over!

I found it via the recruiter who put me here and he was the one who sent me this
so he will be good one
to ask to send me

yep, agreed. Go for it! You have nothing to lose by applying there
as long as they can meet your salary minimums that is

I think nothing is more scary than unable to pay ur bills if u loose it

3:40 PM
and staying with ur mrs all day
:D

@SnarkShark Your welcome.

we currently have 16,666 Qs lol
I am the False Prophet bringing you those news lol >:)

@GrayCygnus ah, good time to use my delete votes. ;)

@Nofel it's very scary.. when I was facing being jobless earlier in the year I lost more than a little sleep over how I'd lose my home if it happened. All the more reason to start job searching NOW
you can do this Nofel :) and when you find something better you'll look back and wonder why on earth you stayed so long!

@motosubatsu I was in a place likt his before
in my own country

3:44 PM
Maybe that is why Monica hammered down that other Question :0

it wa start of my career and bad PM has been ingrained in my brain

so there could be that number of Qs

I fear warth
even slap if X went wrong
I remember back in days, I forgot work usb at home. my manager was so furuious that h sent me to home to get it
turned out lights were out and it was on pc

@Nofel yeah an experience like that is going to mess you up, but you don't have to let it define you.

and he called in anger saying where is it and where r u
when I got back, he was pissed byut ok, so one day he asked me to insert a slide in PP, which i never did but I did and he came running down saying, u cant align things
look at that, and at that point i asked him, can we out outside and talk and said "u dont like my work, I cannot take it anymore, so here is my regisnation"

When I started at my current role (which was straight after two bad ones), even though they are a pretty reasonable bunch of people to work for I would still have panic attacks when my manager asked "have you got a minute?" - and it was all because my brain had "learned" to be fearful of that. Given time where that sort of shit doesn't happen you do return to "normal"

those things imprinted on my mind. coz what he did was worse, he forwarded my reason for leaving to employees on my department, which told him it is pay that he feels is paying less
yet I remember it was my team who hated me for my skills coz when no one knew jQueyr or firefox debugger I told them
@motosubatsu I can relate

@Nofel yep.. but your brain can be trained back to being in alignment with a more rational view of the work world, it just takes time in a better environment, which you can get

huh
guys have you ever had a +1 reputation?
I just had one notification saying so

@GrayCygnus nope.. have you looked on the rep tab in your profile? might tell you where it came from

I maybe a DV I did in the past got deleted along with the post
yes I have looked, it does not specify in the drop down that +1 item
I even checked this great easter egg for seeing your reputation: workplace.stackexchange.com/reputation
and is not specified

meh, I don't have much time today to see what DV was the one involved
