@avazula yep.. I've got some serious horror stories of GP refusal to refer and the resulting consequences but... well they aren't my stories to tell and also probably a bit grim for in here
I remember putting on a lot of weight because of a bad medication. My GP would only focus on my weight gain (while the meds led me in a pretty bad general health) and would tell me how to eat and exercise, whereas she knew for 2 years that I have quite a good hygiene ...
@RichardU Same here. I initially wanted to draw video games, but family said "y'ain't ever get a job!", I thought about the medicine but family ranted "y'ain't tough enough!", ... I ended up in the engineering school because this is pretty much the only job they'd let me learn without being worried about my future income ...
My parents are really understanding about all this. They think it's totally reasonable for me to quit jobs I'm unhappy with and try to find one I really enjoy, and they totally believe in my ability to take care of myself, financially and otherwise.
That said, I'm sure they'd like it even more if I could hurry along with finding that "right job" sooner than later
@avazula I've sat there with a friend at their GP's having to explain that said friend (who was sat there in obvious distress) couldn't eat, sleep, was hearing voices and was terrified of certain words. The GP's response was to berate me for being the one to look after them given my own history while refusing to do anything for them himself
I can do Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump, Boris Karlov, Peter Lorrie, James Cagney, Cary Grant, Bill Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Kermit the Frog, Yoda, Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Yousemite Sam, Christopher Walkin, and a myriad of others
@SouthpawHare You're lucky. My parents can't even understand how I'd complain about my job just because they couldn't switch theirs when they were younger
I've recently graduated with a BS in Computer Engineering, and I have been looking for a job. I've had 4 internships in the past; they've been at both government and private sector, both small and large. However, I've found the common factor is that they set you in front of a computer, and expect...
@avazula indeed.. happy to report that said friend did eventually get the help they needed after we went another route - but only after they had experienced another two months of unrelenting hell and suffering while their condition worsened. Two months that could have been easily avoided had the GP not been a useless asshole
fortunately though now they are being looked after by some really good experts and are going great guns on their recovery
@avazula I was non-mainstream before it was cool ;)
I remember crying the whole day on my last birthday, I just couldn't handle being alive anymore. The next day, I came seeing my physician, asking for help. She just told me I wasn't enough of an emergency since I could still go to work...
@avazula that's good to hear :) I'm currently medicated myself.. including being on a clinical trial which my nerdy brain is actually finding rather interesting :)
Fortunately they are much better now... by better I mean "Things are calm because, the reason being people already forgot about the recent corruption situation, and are more worried about anticipated Christmas sales, Halloween, Real Madrid getting beat hard and the upcoming Day of All Saints that is a BIG cultural celebration here"
But yeah, almost no despicable or undesired acts form our lovely Politicians :)
we have a Traditional dish called "Fiambre" that we eat on this day. Which is some sort of mixture of meats, sausages, olives, palm hearts, but mostly beet (the purple vegetable, don't recall the name completely)
@Snow yep, that one. Although the mask part is more common in Mexico
Fiambre is a traditional Guatemalan dish that is prepared and eaten yearly to celebrate the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) and the All Saints Day (Día de Todos los Santos). It is a salad, served chilled, and may be made up from over 50 ingredients.
Fiambre started out from the tradition in Guatemala of taking dead family members their favorite dishes to the cemeteries for the Day of the Dead. As all different families brought food to the celebrations, they became mixed, eventually mixing them together to this all-encompassing salad. Ingredients usually include numerous sausages and cold cuts...
Some people do White Fiambre, which is without Beet... but I prefer Red Fiambre
It is actually really nice, and it gets better with time; I ate my last reserve of Fiambre this past June, as you can keep it on the fridge a long time
and it gets more tasy, like if it were fermenting a bit jeje
"Folks, don't be too hasty on the Close votes. Give OP some time to edit and improve the post." The purpose of closing a post is to give the OP the time to edit and improve the question.
@AnneDaunted Common enough for people to do it in order to close down "low quality" questions. If people really thought they could be improved, they'd offer some kind of advice about that. But no, we get people just want to get rid of what they feel are bad questions.
@Snow So it seems that everyone misunderstands / misuses close votes and so people try to resort to not closing questions instead. That doesn't seem to be helpful for anyone.
Nope. I'd much prefer to see people leaving VTCs to describe why they're doing that with the intention of getting the OP (or someone else) to improve the question.
IMO, the ideal thing is to: Comment asking OP for clarification... wait a bit... if no response is given, cast vote and perhaps comment again.... if OP appears help edit, and remove vote if you casted it already
As of now, it's been 30 minutes and no response nor engagement from OP. At this point it would make more sense to VTC, but not one minute after posting
I think that many issues would be solved if OPs remained engaged about 15 minutes after posting, so they can swiftly clarify
@DarkCygnus Or you sneak in an answer (maybe something like "Yes, they can do that. Find another job." (please note: Don't say "Quit your job" - huge difference)).
The answer is the same pretty much anywhere. Companies must accommodate, the company could argue that a closed toe shoe, if it meets the requirements, better protects the person from a situation where further injury is likely. (at a cash-register things can be, and are dropped with some frequency)
Now that you are soon to leave, and MM stepped down, that leaves us with -2 mods. In the elections this year we had +2 mods... so basically the election will have no effect on the # of mods. What will happen?
Last election was in May, SE doesn't schedule elections in the last 2 months of the year, so it'll be over 6 months.
But. We'll have an internal discussion and evaluate the load/need for new position(s) and communicate as a Meta, giving people plenty of time to prepare.
@Magisch New Year, or at least the process starting then. We'll give people time to get the holiday season out of their systems though. We wouldn't want to disadvantage people for having time off.
@IDrinkandIKnowThings I do not seek power, I only threw my hat in the ring last time as a lark, I figured snow and ChrisE would win, and figured It'd be fun.
I think "passionate" and "off the rails" are two different things, though certainly there can be overlap. You are, of course, free to hold whatever opinion of me you like; I just wanted to understand what you were basing it on. Thank you for clarifying.
@DarkCygnus not often, if you look at my profile. Mostly I use it to post to the Worldbuilding blog, which I don't do enough of. I have a personal blog on Dreamwidth that I mainly use, but since I know many SE folks use Medium and the image embedding there works well, I went with that.
it's part of my problem solving strategy... get everyone focused on solutions instead of recriminations
no, I'm a troubleshooter, very expensive one, I solve problems when everyone else has given up, stopped answering phones, dealines are looming etc,. you call me... 'I'm the last man standing' in the language here.
yeah, there is a lot to it, I have huge experience and the work suits my way of thinking. I don't think I'm particularly special apart from the mental training
it makes the biggest difference
I just looked up Zen Master... ahaha
Wouldn't get far being one of those, their problem resolution is to deny there is a problem

Optionally you could add a comment explaining why you chose it, but that's not necessary either. And since comments are meant to be temporary, I'd only do it if qualifying your choice would add some value (like saying why it was the most helpful to you or for your situation).
@PunkUnicorn basic protocol would be: If the post is useful, upvote. If it's bad, not remotely useful, downvote... after a while, accept the answer that you think is best.
@PunkUnicorn Interesting conundrum, but upvotes are binary and unqualified: either you give one or you don't. And in this system it's recommended to upvote useful posts, even if Answer A is 3 times better than answer B.
That said you should weigh effort as well so if Answer B is a partial rehash of A and was posted much later, you might not upvote it since it doesn't contribute anything new or valuable.
If you’re working as a contractor, I would say that this is 100% on your employer. Tell them that accomplishing the goals they have set for you means that other things that you think should be considered goals aren’t being done; ask them if they want to adjust your goals. They may well tell you t...
well that's a lot higher now. But it was a lot lower when I accepted it (the top voted answers are way higher still though)
Ah you're talking about accepting an answer way out of the top5? Yeah, that's probably rarer than it should be but it's not wholly uncommon. @PunkUnicorn This would be one case where leaving a comment to explain why you accepted an answer that far down the list would be helpful.
