Q: Proper forms for consensual sex in the workplace?

MuzeWhen you are the boss of your own porn business. What is the best way to protect yourself if you wish to ignite a sexual and professional relationship with your employee/s off the clock? Can the other workers sue you because they are left out?

Any chance of getting this troll bait deleted?

1:25 PM
Grrr, 50 pt rep hit due to user removed.

@IamSoNotListening I rolled it back to its original version, which is probably still a troll, but can be a useful question.

Still seems troll like to me...@MaskedMan
@TheSnarkKnight I lost 19
@Snow lost 40 too I think...

second delete vote cast on that @MaskedMan
@IamSoNotListening wondering what's going on. Trolls getting caught?
@IamSoNotListening I edited that question to change it from "is it rude" to "is it unprofessional" to ask about taking a laptop on vacation. Your answer still fits though

1:40 PM
@TheSnarkKnight You forgot the title :P

@Tinkeringbell I always do that....
@Tinkeringbell fixed, thanks

@TheSnarkKnight No thank you :) You made me smile, I had fun mentioning it :P

2:26 PM
@Tinkeringbell Morning
@Snow Hodor

@IamSoNotListening Afternoon :D

@MaskedMan Welcome back to the Stack, we have missed you.
@Tinkeringbell I may make some noise on IPS...

@IamSoNotListening Oh dear... Don't derail the chatroom though! What mutiny are you planning? :)

I think I've made enough noise in there to last a while.

I think a user or two are attempting to control the site. I think the moderators are either unaware or don't know what to do.

2:30 PM
@Snow Sorry they're all ganging up on you right now... That wasn't planned... :/ Well, at least now we know the downside of such a comment as well :/
I might make another meta :)
@IamSoNotListening Am I too present?

@Tinkeringbell They can gang up on me, its ok.
@Tinkeringbell ?

I'm not really a fan of how it's changing, so I'm just going to leave it. I'm sure there's good intentions there, but they don't really align with how I view things.

@IamSoNotListening Just hoping you're not finding me too controlling?

@Snow Not @Tinkeringbell its not you.

@IamSoNotListening Thank goodness.... I really hate being too present/overbearing but I sometimes don't even realize...

2:32 PM
Actually I am 49% towards @Snow s thinking.

I can't really take Tinkeringbell seriously now that I know what she does to test cucumbers.

@Snow {Shocked look on face}

@Snow Good ;) I really had to learn not to take a beta site too seriously either... It still is the first site ever I became active on on SE and I really should learn how graduated sites work ;) ... That would have been better actually :P
To start on a graduated site instead of a beta

At least you didn't start on Health. That was an absolute monster of over- and micro-management in the extreme.

Hmmm... I'll take a look at it, I believe it still exists? ;) I might learn something...

I'm always open to feedback. But what I've learned is that IPS does need a lot of management :/

2:35 PM
The WPS and StackOverFlow are going to be my focus.
I don't see w way for it to get better they way a couple users are acting like MODS

@IamSoNotListening And apparently we're not talking 'using their privileges because it's necessary'?

At least for this Stack, we generally are here to help the user first. We do want answers to be useful to all, but helping the OP comes first ( at least to me ).
@Tinkeringbell No. In my opinion a coupe are acting like mini-gods.
And comments can be SUPER useful to the OP, even if they don't DIRECTLY answer the question asked.
Some of the best information I have gotten has been via comments.

@IamSoNotListening The way I choose to deal with IPS types is to follow this priceless advice: "Just ignore those idiots." You should probably give it some consideration too.

@Tinkeringbell I think I am a priv user now...

@IamSoNotListening I hope we won't need the autocomment after a few times of using it... We now just want to draw some attention from the 1k+ rep users, because it's getting a bit disruptive that there's a load of them answering questions while they should be closed.
@IamSoNotListening Yes, you probably are.... And you were regularly in the chat room and trying to learn and understand how the site worked...
Some aren't, and we're trying to get them to pay some attention...

2:41 PM
@MaskedMan I actually doing that for the most part. I am answering and commenting where I see fit, and letting the comment police delete them.

@IamSoNotListening Sadly, comments on IPS usually only contain opinions and will lead to comment wars... Once the internet has learned not everything needs to be counteracted with a comment of your own, we can leave them around :D

@MaskedMan I am not going back to IPS for a while, if at all.

I'll just keep bothering you all here then ;)

@Tinkeringbell we had comment wars in here for a while, the mods had to slap those down quickly

I just answer questions in order to help people. I'm not too concerned whether the question is "high quality" or not. If it fits the stack, and if I have an answer that's appropriate and relevant, I'll answer.

2:42 PM
@TheSnarkKnight What happened?

@Tinkeringbell well, you and @TheTinyMan are not the reasons we stay away.

@TheSnarkKnight You are right, our moderators in general are rock stars. We also slap that stuff down too.

@TheSnarkKnight OMG, you just conjured him up out of thin air?

@Tinkeringbell Hello sir.

Hi @TheTinyMan :)

2:44 PM
@TheTinyMan Hello Sir!
@Tinkeringbell Hopefully you can guide them

@IamSoNotListening Looks down ... Nope, there's still boobs. You're wrong :P

@Tinkeringbell we had a few people in here who thought that there sole purpose in life was to contradict answers and judge the intent of the posters. What that does is poison the well. We raised a bit of a stink with the mods, and they responded. What we were able to show is that the nastiness caused an avalanche of down-votes

@Tinkeringbell Already said hello to you, meant to throw that at TinyMan :-P

@Snow And we'll post the auto comment when the question get's closed. Maybe we should post it on the question instead of the answers though, make it less personal?

They put a stop to it, and err on the side of removing comments rather than letting them stand.
I think one problem IPS is having right now is too many judgmental posts, the whole witch hunt against magisch, for example.

2:47 PM
@TheSnarkKnight I agree on the argumentative comments, but the comments offering help that doesn't directly answer the question we need to consider leaving alone.

@TheSnarkKnight Exactly what's happening at IPS, and I'm sorry if half-answers in comments are getting deleted as well... We've seen those starting discussion as well. Right now, we're just trying really, really hard to stamp out discussions, because well, IPS is seen as the drain of SE where it's such a nice place to voice your opinion on a situation....

@TheSnarkKnight That was awful.

@Tinkeringbell what we've driven home here is that SE is not a forum, it's a Q&A site. Comments are not a place to debate answers, provide your own answers, or disparage the poster.

That's why we need to more closely watch the comments. We actually have a bot running that posts all the new ones into a chatroom. If it works well, we can use that to knock them down faster. We sadly can't prevent them right now, other than showing that we don't tolerate them for longer than 10 minutes...

I really am stuck on that situation too, and I think our mods are as well

Hi everyone! :-D Looks like I got here just in time for the juicy stuff, haha

2:49 PM
Stamping on things just makes experienced users less likely to post in future. New users will always post crap, and new users keep on coming.

@TheSnarkKnight We're trying that too... if there's any advice on how, it's welcome. I'll try and break the news over there gently ;)

And yes, I am summoned! :-D

@TheTinyMan Good, now I take control. Your job is to defend IPS :P

@Snow GENIUS.

Another problem we had, that we had to tamp down on @Tinkeringbell was that people were using the comments to provide answers risk-free. under existing answers. This really annoyed people, because they could start a down-vote avalanche by posting a contrary answer without taking any risk.

2:50 PM
They're all ganging up on me :( :P

Stamping out all comments will not solve a damn thing.
@Tinkeringbell At least you are listening. Too bad your not a mod on that site.

@TheTinyMan Good, now it's time to put away the book, bell and candle, as the summons was successful.

@TheSnarkKnight Yeah, we now have an auto comment for that, and still people aren't listening :)

@Tinkeringbell it requires a very tough, hands-on approach from the mods, but only for a short period of time. Once this is done for a while, 90% of the problem goes away.

@Tinkeringbell Wait, what am I doing to IPS now? :o And what have you done to cucumbers??

2:52 PM
@IamSoNotListening It's a mindset... and I'll gladly admit that some people do have manuals, then it's an IPS skill to provide your opinion in such a way that people take heed ;)
I'm not going to moderate anything. I prefer to stay free
I think work won't even allow it, I have to ask permission for everything I do on the side of my job...

@IamSoNotListening stamping out all comments doesn't help, but stamping out the bad ones, with a "gentle reminder" from mods does well

@TheSnarkKnight Don't say our mods aren't trying. If I raise 78 comment flags right now, they'll all get approved.
@TheSnarkKnight They might brush up on the reminder part then... ;)

Three step program for fixing IPS: 1) Proactively fix bad questions and make them better. 2) Provide good quality answers (lead by example). 3) Delete comments that detract from good answers or promote bad answers. 4) Quit badgering high rep users and making them leave.

@Tinkeringbell not saying that at all, just that it takes time.
@Snow 5)enforce the "be nice" rule.... universally

@Snow GENIUS. That's twice Hodor.
@TheSnarkKnight Good luck with that. The two users I am irritated with are jerks IMO.

2:56 PM
@Tinkeringbell what the mods have done here is have a few private chats with people who have been causing difficulty. Sometimes, it's just as simple as saying. "We don't do that this way, and here's why". Most people respond well, and since SE has a mechanism where this is done privately, there's no show-boating or saving face, just a private conversation.
@IamSoNotListening I'm just tired of being accused of trolling when I am specifically trying to stop trolling of SE, and having my motives questioned.

@TheSnarkKnight At the end of the day, its easier to just answer and comment as you see fit and ignore any responses. As per the advise of the great @MaskedMan

(Have to go, be nice :P I'll be back to read up and react soon ;) )

@IamSoNotListening comments should be deleted if they 1)Add nothing. 2)Are rude or abusive. 3)Should be an answer 4)are argumentative
@Tinkeringbell we will be nice {quietly distributes hammers to the room}

@TheSnarkKnight Agreed

@IamSoNotListening answer, comment AND FLAG I've seen bad comments drive good answers from positive to negative territory, and then see it reverse when the bad comments are deleted.
now, at this point, nothing is going to seriously damage my rep in here to the point where it affects me in any way, so I'm not saying this for my benefit, but for the benefit of the site.

3:01 PM
@TheSnarkKnight Bad comments usually will get deleted by the build in mechanism. I flag stupid comments and after three or 5 flags they co away.

@IamSoNotListening flag and flag some more. I've had to deal with a few... people... who don't get the message.

@TheSnarkKnight Here on the WPS I know of whom you speak.

@TheSnarkKnight I still love you, even though I don't understand the message

@IamSoNotListening my acceptance rate for flagging comments is about 93%, so I've got the hang of it.
@Draken SPLORT Dang, now I gotta clean coffee up after that
Gee, I've noticed that I haven't been able to respond with HR IS NOT YOUR FRIEND in quite some time. I think I'm going through withdrawal.

@TheSnarkKnight Going out for drinks with my buddy from HR, what do you recommend?
disclaimer: this story is fiction

3:08 PM
Cocktails with fruity/innuendo names.

The sweeter and more flamboyant the cocktail, the better

@TheTinyMan hemlock

539 comment flags with 489 accepted. Not bad.
@enderland Speaking of one of our superstar moderators...

@IamSoNotListening wow, upi
you're beating me in the flags dept

@TheSnarkKnight Ha. How is that possible.....

3:18 PM
My macabre sense of humor is working overtime these days.
now, if I can just convince one of my exes that the hair dryer I sent here is "shower safe".

@TheSnarkKnight Stickers saying this is waterproof helps

Put a shower-cap on the hair dryer - one of those ones made of tin foil. That'll help.

@ChrisE Hello sir. I mean just hello.

hey

Good morning @ChrisE

3:31 PM
Top of the morning to you, good sir.

@ChrisE You missed all the IPS "fun"

It felt more like IBS to me.

@IamSoNotListening IDGI. We are obviously not hostile to that stack, but are treated as if we are the enemy.

I'm so glad that IPS exists to take away the ridiculousness of the HNQ, if nothing else...
I've spent years fighting that. Now someone else can fight it ;)

@enderland fair point :D

3:32 PM
HNQ made me what I am today.

what happened?

I lost my rag there. Basically.

you try tampons?

They probably would have been more fun, that's for sure.

what abot?
My damn u key is sticking
And I REALLY hate working on laptop keyboards because I pretty much have to take the machine apart.

3:35 PM
Hm. They're attempting to raise the quality of the stack by stamping on anything that isn't high quality. It's that ying/yang thing of serving the stack or serving the user. They choose stack.

So they're deleting the stack, you say?

I happen to believe that on the humanist related stacks, the users are more important than the stack. I was told that I was wrong, so left.
No, they're not deleting the stack, they're just iron-fisting it (excuse the pun).

@Snow realistically this is something Workplace went through too (before most of you folks were here. wow I'm "workplace old")

you said they were getting rid of everything that isn't high quality. I assume that meant deleting the stack.

@ChrisE LMAO

3:38 PM
Well, closing bad questions, and leaving comments on any answers on "bad" questions remind the users that they shouldn't be answering "bad" questions.

hard to believe I've been here for over 3 years.

@Snow the place is out of control, so they need to reign it in a bit. Once they get it under control, they can loosen up. I'm more concerned about the cliquishness myself.
@ChrisE wow, that snark got past me for a moment. I must be losing my touch.

Well, yes. Most of these directives are coming from a couple of users in chat, not the nominated moderators.

@Snow I know EXACTLY what you mean.

Here's something of note. Vietnhi gets out of Workplace jail in 7 days

3:41 PM
@ChrisE coincidentally, that's almost the exact count to the beginning of his next stint in WP jail.

@ChrisE I wonder if he will come back....and if they do will they behave?

@TheSnarkKnight lol

I put myself in IPS jail. I will not pass GO, I will not collect $200.

@IamSoNotListening I hope so. He actually has lots of great answers but he just had a hard time reigning in the BS.

@Snow I'm so thoroughly a pariah in there that I don't bother to try to contribute as everything will be slapped down by virtue of who posts it.

3:43 PM
@Snow For how long?
@TheSnarkKnight There is definitely a clique at the IPS....

Oooooh, this guy is in a pickle!!!!!
0
Q: Blaming previous employer during interview for being fired

JohannesbergI was let go from my last employer due to "poor performance" and in their words "lacking seniority" after working there about 3 months. After a lot of thinking I've come to the realisation that maybe it was the actual management that was the pitfall and not me: The initial project I was assign...

@IamSoNotListening yeah, if you don't toe the SJW line, you are in the out-group

@TheSnarkKnight SJW line?
@Snow damn you had that typed up so fast! Impressive sir.

I wrote it before I read his last paragraph, unfortunately.

@IamSoNotListening the new "politically correct", "Social Justice Warrior" line.
all that virtue signaling at magisch's post, for example.

@TheSnarkKnight And your suggestion for improvement is?

3:55 PM
Keep in mind that SJW is fairly derogatory in nature (I didn't actually know this until fairly recently)

@Tinkeringbell I don't have a clue how to fix it, for the record. :-}

I'm getting a bit .... sad? .... there's a lot of people saying 'this isn't right, this is so wrong'.... but no-one has a clue of how to fix it, and if we try something new people start kicking against it immediately :/

Not saying that venting isn't good ;) But I'd really like to focus on solutions and trying stuff a bit more....

@enderland blink I didn't realize that that term was ever used in a non-derogatory manner.

@TheTinyMan I think I was naive, but I always assumed it was a self created label - never realized it was intended as a derogatory term. the wiki article made that clear though lol

@enderland Ah, I see. That makes sense.

3:59 PM
@Tinkeringbell Don't be sad. You need some help to fix it. In my mind its up to the moderators to set the clique straight.

One big problem is that the line between "SJW" and "respectful" is often blurry

Moderators need to lead, not let themselves be led.

@IamSoNotListening Then please flag something for the moderators or find a way to contact them, and suggest your improvement to them...

@Tinkeringbell @Tinkeringbell at this time they do not appear to be open to it. If one of the two people I am irritated with become moderators, which one of them clearly is gunning for IMO, the site will be lost.

something worthwhile to consider is that in most cases, everyone is aiming for the same goal - a useful, healthy site. it's the tactics which differ... but ultimately everyone normally is on the same team

4:03 PM
@IamSoNotListening Don't worry too much about that. There won't be another moderator until IPS graduates and often then the pro tempore mods get re-elected from what I know. And I must admit we're nowhere near graduating.

@enderland Yep, normally this is the case.

@enderland I don't know how SJW is a derisive term as so many of them have been proudly declaring themselves to be one.

@Tinkeringbell Good to know!

@IamSoNotListening Btw, that's not inside info or something, just my guess ;)

@TheSnarkKnight There are people trying to claim the insult, like black people have (kinda) claimed the N-word or homosexuals have claimed a few words. I don't think that they're quite there yet.

4:05 PM
I'm not sure there will never be an extra moderator before graduation :/

@Tinkeringbell I don't know how the graduation process works....

@Tinkeringbell I think a more aggressive application of the "be nice" rule would help, and by that, I don't mean shouting down anyone they think isn't being nice. Tamp down mob rule, so to speak.
@TheTinyMan if you call me deaf, should I be insulted? SJWs used the term on themselves LONG before people started rolling their eyes at them.

@IamSoNotListening Hey, it's what I'm told... There's some stuff on meta about it ;) I should reread that as well I think.

@TheSnarkKnight I'm not convinced, but maybe.

@Tinkeringbell I'm not sure how to stop the dogpiling, other than locking the room when it starts.
chat that is
@TheTinyMan all I am saying is that you cannot at the same time proudly proclaim to be something, then get offended when someone refers to you with the same term.

4:08 PM
@TheSnarkKnight I agree I might close the room a little sooner sometimes, but then again as long as no-one is being rude/agressive and people are only fiercely debating something, should I lock down the room and like some dictator stomp down on every little form of 'otherness'? It's a difficult decision to make when you have your own opinions ;)

with respect to the N word, it's usually used ironically among blacks, not proudly.

@Tinkeringbell I go back to @Snow 4 step program. 1) Proactively fix bad questions and make them better. 2) Provide good quality answers (lead by example). 3) Delete comments that detract from good answers or promote bad answers. 4) Quit badgering high rep users and making them leave.

@TheSnarkKnight That's usually how I see "SJW" used by liberals, too.

@Tinkeringbell I think it's wise to crack down for a bit, you can always loosen up later, but to get control, it's easiest to keep things from escalating for now.

@Tinkeringbell Don't be sad. Participate here more. We have cookies on occasion.

4:10 PM
@IamSoNotListening That nr. 4 is a bit difficult though... right now, we need to badger the high-rep users IMO, to get them all on 1 line (even if that means I have to switch lines :/ )

enderland has had to do it in here a few times, it works.
@TheTinyMan most liberals I know hate SJWs, they are two different things.

@IamSoNotListening Hahaha, and I'm still on a lifestyle change, so no cookies :P

@TheSnarkKnight I guess that's fair :-p

@Tinkeringbell Ok, muffins then....

Btw, @Snow it might interest you to know that my only answer on here (IIRC) is on a question that got closed ;)

4:12 PM
@Tinkeringbell The last one that TSK was involved in was a pretty good example of one that obviously needed to end immediately, though. People seemed to be logging in just to yell at him, and it went on for a decent while. On the other hand, his words read as incredibly disrespectful to me, too, and that needed to be addressed as well.

@Tinkeringbell I think you can take your lead from Shog. He's tough, but fair, and he lays the smackdown when needed.

@Tinkeringbell Happens to me all the time.

@TheSnarkKnight I really hate to do that.... I want to be consequent, not as different as the weather > one month every discussion get's shut down, and the next things loosen up :/

@Tinkeringbell you do it incrementally, and you'll find that it becomes self-policing after a time.

@TheTinyMan I know, I admitted I should have closed that down sooner... And I tried by cutting in with a few messages myself, Anne tried and eventually I think Catija succeeded.... :/ But it's a bit difficult for me to make the decision still. I think the only time I did it was because I really wanted to go eat breakfast :/

4:13 PM
The key is to catch it BEFORE it gets too heated.

@TheSnarkKnight Hah, I might need to ask him to monitor the chatroom and lead by example then ;) I need to see a few times, I'm great at parotting ;)

@Tinkeringbell eventually, you won't have to shut things down, just post .....
WARNING: getting too heated
and people will get what that means

@TheSnarkKnight That conversation did go from 0 to 100 in exactly one message didn't it?

@TheSnarkKnight The problem with that is that I'll be putting my own definition of too heated down on all of you :/

@TheTinyMan damn, I missed that one, I think...

4:15 PM
And that's not a narrow definition to begin with :/

@Tinkeringbell which is your right, you're the owner
@TheTinyMan I have two buttons that take me from 0 - blind rage. Call me privileged or try to read my mind.
so I left

@TheSnarkKnight I don't think that you were the first to hit 100 in that conversation.

@TheSnarkKnight Hmmm..... I'll think about it :) I really admit that that last one could have used a closure for a while.....
If I'm honest though, I wouldn't have started the discussion there in the first place. There's a reason those comments get deleted ;)

@Tinkeringbell the problem you're facing is that you're a new stack. Until people realize you're serious, they're going to push the limits.

@Tinkeringbell GAH! Comment police!! ;-}

4:18 PM
@TheSnarkKnight So, you were pushing limits? :P
Just admit it :P
@IamSoNotListening Hey, we're recruiting! :)

@Tinkeringbell my methods are a bit more subtle than that fiasco.
but to be fair, perhaps I was pushing a bit.
which is why it's important to draw the line a bit back from where things get out of control.
@TheTinyMan I still am not sure what put the burr in everyone's biscuit in that one.

@TheSnarkKnight Right :) Pro-tip: you perfectly explained here what your eventual goal was (lemme see if I can find that sentence again).... If things don't go as planned, restate your question in other words can cut down a conversation short pretty fast. I used it on real-life people and it works ;)

@Tinkeringbell I do flag dumb comments. The ones that help need to be left alone.
@Tinkeringbell Or the ones I think are funny. ;-}

@TheSnarkKnight So what happened was that your initial comment was (and I'm paraphrasing), "I wish I had so few problems that something like this bothered me," and what people saw from that was, "I wish I had so few problems that one of root causes of sexism seemed important," which is both snarky in a way that is going to come off as very disrespectful to anyone who identifies with the problem in question ...

Jan 17 at 18:53, by The Snark Knight
@TheTinyMan well, to sum up without rehashing it too much. I was simply trying to say that, given what I've been through in this life, I simply couldn't relate to the level of outrage being expressed over someone telling you "smile". Nothing more sinister than that. It was more of a commentary about my own perspective than anything else.

4:23 PM
... and to people who are really invested in the struggle, sounds like you're saying "it's not really a problem when people treat women as objects, you're immature if you think it is."
Combo breaker! :o
@TheSnarkKnight And the verbiage that you expressed in what @tinkeringbell quoted conveyed your message without the connotations of disrespect toward people who struggle with that kind of thing.

Yeah we're really struggling with those... Humor may lighten up a lot of real-life interpersonal situations... but we can't really warrant deleting one and leaving the other I think...

And we've seen our fair share of jokes at an OP's expense, just because their serious problem was 'funny'...

@TheTinyMan EEEEK. Glad I missed that one.
@Tinkeringbell The funny comment was a joke sir.

@Tinkeringbell yeah, but I was only able to state that after I calmed down. Prior to that, it was just "WTH?" and again, we have the "assume good intent" rule around here too.

@IamSoNotListening Hmmmm... Just thought I'd hammer it down again. Snark suggested being more strict, so I guess that means no more fun for me :P

@TheTinyMan not changing my opinion on that. I know people who have been assaulted at work, they'd trade "smile" for that as well.

4:25 PM
@TheSnarkKnight Right, but you can only assume good intent so far. Until you spelled out for me that the disrespectful connotation wasn't intended, that was literally the only interpretation that I came up with to your words...and I think we've observed that I give a lot more benefit of the doubt than most people do.

@Tinkeringbell Just flag comments that don't add value and forget about it.

@TheTinyMan in order to assume disrespect, you had to assume bad intent

@TheSnarkKnight Which goes more for posts than the chatroom I'm afraid... Anyway, next time just shout 'That isn't what I meant, lemme find another way to phrase it'...
(and I'm guilty, I should enforce the chat room more...)

@TheSnarkKnight I have to draw conclusions from the words I'm seeing. Like I said, I did not see a non-disrespectful interpretation of your words, even when I looked for them.

@Tinkeringbell well, I had to contend with being treated like Satan himself first.
@TheTinyMan I honestly don't care enough for anyone to disrespect them.

4:27 PM
@TheSnarkKnight I feel like we're operating under different definitions of the word 'disrespect?'

I am, however, aghast at how frail people seem, to me, to have become.
@TheTinyMan disrespect requires intent.

@TheSnarkKnight STRONGLY AGREE, after all if one thinks about it, this is all virtual help stuff.....

@TheSnarkKnight People are trying to identify the root stages of sexism and intentionally stop sucking it up when they see it. I don't think that's frailty, I think that's strength.

@IamSoNotListening I'm more than happy to help people, but sometimes the help needs to be a quick kick in the posterior.

I think I've gotten off on a lot more of a tangent than I intended to

4:30 PM
@TheTinyMan the root is called "DNA", we're not going to change that (I hope). The ladies back in my day would respond with a slap to the face if needed. Much better than getting offending, IMO.
@TheTinyMan one of my friends was murdered by her SO, btw, so I'm not speaking from ignorance on the subject

@TheSnarkKnight Are you suggesting that it was in his DNA to kill her? O.o

but there is a vast chasm between "smile" and beating your GF to death.

That there was some kind of genetic imperative?

@TheTinyMan of course there is a genetic imperative to kill, we wouldn't be so damn good at it otherwise.
@TheTinyMan but we cannot regulate DNA, only behavior.

@TheSnarkKnight So what stops us from killing all the time?

4:33 PM
@TheTinyMan self-awareness for one.

@TheSnarkKnight So you do acknowledge that behavior can be changed. What, then, were you trying to express with the initial "DNA" comment?

@TheTinyMan the "root cause" of so much trouble is our DNA

@TheSnarkKnight That's why we are trying to catch people who are in the "I command you to behave in the manner that is most attractive to me and stop expressing yourself" stage of sexism, to make them self-aware that that's what they're doing before they get to the "I'm going to murder you because (for example) you aren't doing what I think you should be doing and therefore you are defective" stage.

@TheTinyMan nobody is commanding anyone.

@TheSnarkKnight That's what the OP in that question was complaining about. Being commanded to smile, for the whim of the speaker.

4:35 PM
@TheTinyMan AND that kind of attempted suppression is counterproductive.

Being told that her emotions aren't as important as looking pretty for a man.
@TheSnarkKnight Trying to catch people who are non-violently objectifying people?

@TheTinyMan how do we address the problem that men are being forced to work in jobs where the mortality rate is more than 10 times that of women?

@TheSnarkKnight By addressing the problem that men are being forced to work in jobs where the mortality rate is more than 10 times that of women. This is a different problem.

@TheTinyMan Is it a bad thing when women objectify men?

@TheSnarkKnight It sure is, but you're completely shifting topics here.

4:37 PM
@TheTinyMan no, I'm talking about sexism, and the fact that the accusations seem to go one way.
but, to go directly to my point.

@TheSnarkKnight I agree with you. We as a society turn a blind eye to some actions that women take toward men.
That is a bad thing.
That is a different problem.

@TheTinyMan it's all the same problem.
I saw one of those social experiment videos.
They had a man being abusive to a woman (non-violently, but yelling and degrading her) EVERYONE jumped to her defense.
Guess what happened when they reversed it?

@TheSnarkKnight Everyone laughed at the man, I'm sure. That is a problem. That also needs to be addressed.
You don't address that by encouraging men to disrespect or objectify women.

@TheTinyMan it all needs to be addressed, and at the proper levels.
Umbrella terms are not useful, as they conflate the minor with the severe.

@TheSnarkKnight You are 100% correct. Are you arguing for my point or against it? Because I just heard you say that the thing that you were saying wasn't a problem earlier needs to be addressed. xD

4:40 PM
@TheTinyMan my arguments tend to be nuanced, and thus easily misinterpreted....

@TheSnarkKnight So you're arguing that either we're talking about 'sexism,' which includes men's rights, or I shouldn't be putting "smile, honey," in the same category as "die, worthless woman?"

Aristitle defined wisdom as "being angry at the right thing for the right person, at the right time, for the right reason, and to the right degree".
That is what I am arguing.
"Smile" is not the same as beating a woman to death, for example.

@TheSnarkKnight I agree, it is not.

and here's where it's really important....
By treating "smile" as if it's a devastating crime, how do you treat a devastating crime?
there is literally no place to go.

@TheSnarkKnight I don't think that anyone suggested that it be treated as a devastating crime.
She wasn't asking for legal advice. She wasn't asking how to hurt this person, or how to get him imprisoned. She was (IIRC) asking how to not be angry, and how to communicate to him that that's not okay.
That's not how you react to a devastating crime.

4:44 PM
@TheTinyMan looking at the reaction I got, one would think it was wouldn't one?

@TheSnarkKnight I assure you, people would have reacted more strongly if they thought that you were making light of someone who had been domestically abused.

@TheTinyMan I doubt they could have.
which is again my point.

@TheSnarkKnight I decidedly disagree. They were vile, but I disagree that they were maximally vile, and no one was hitting you with moderator or room owner actions, which I imagine would have happened if the topic had been more severe.

now, of course, when I try to make the argument of keeping things to the degree of seriousness they deserve, I get accused of 'gate keeping'.

@TheSnarkKnight I admit that I don't remember that part of the conversation with clarity

4:47 PM
@TheTinyMan they drove me off, a room ban wasn't necessary.
but, I don't want to make this be about what happened.

@TheSnarkKnight So, you're saying we shouldn't take the smiling one as serious as we do a 'beaten up' question?
We can teach the OP self confidence, a way to assert her boundaries while remaining polite...
Yet you're suggesting to not take it seriously?

@Tinkeringbell no, the QUESTIONS should be taken seriously.
@Tinkeringbell I had no input to that question at all because I simply can't relate.

@TheSnarkKnight So, then what got under your skin? The amount of comments?

@Tinkeringbell the question didn't get under my skin at all. There was virtue signaling in the comments which I thought didn't help.
@Tinkeringbell what got to me was the outrage.

Which happens to me too, and I don't answer those as well.

I can't relate to that one either, because I've always been able to face-slap or speak up when needed. Which is why when the whole metoo thing started I had some very interesting discussions with my mom.

4:50 PM
@Tinkeringbell yeah, one of my ex's beat the hell out of a manager once. He deserved it.

So, basically, you're not different on that than the rest of us. All of us were flagging stuff like crazy on that one, but the HNQ effect took place.

There's a lot of users on the SE that have more opinions than practical knowledge and for now all we can do is flag as much as we can, as you yourself have suggested. I told apaul once, and I'm going to tell you know:

All I can do in such situations is ready my torch and pitchfork and drive them out as soon as they appear.... It's like a video game, you can't stop them from appearing. You can only destroy them once they're there...

@Tinkeringbell I think this goes directly to what I was saying earlier. IPS needs to gain control of comments on the questions and answers that don't improve the question or answer.
@Tinkeringbell yeah, it's not easy, and when one of our questions appeared in Hacker news, it was all hands on deck to tamp things down.
What monica usually does here is post a mods note like "Comments are not for extended discussion" or something more strongly worded if people are misbehaving.
I wish I could be more help over there, but right now I doubt I'd be welcome.

@TheSnarkKnight Flag, vote, comment... For me you're always welcome and if people say otherwise they shall have to prove it in a fight with the moderators :P
You could always ask one ;)

@Tinkeringbell I do think that you're vulnerable to trolls too. If I wanted to troll IPS, then I would post something like that "smile" question because I know it would be flame-bait. What to do about that, I'm not sure. Lately, we've been trolled over here with some pretty explicit, NSFW "questions", usually by someone with a rep of 101.
@Tinkeringbell I'll probably come back eventually, but I'm still a bit stung about the last time.
I won't come back unless I know I'm not spoiling for a fight as well, it won't help.

@TheSnarkKnight I noticed those, nice formatting those have :)
@TheSnarkKnight Come back, we have 'prrrikweg'? (which is a Dutch thing for when you get stung, to help with the pain :P )
@TheSnarkKnight That's probably good. I sometimes take a step back too, luckily I can usually control myself within a few hours ;)
(Did I piss someone off?)

5:49 PM
@TheSnarkKnight @IamSoNotListening @Snow, look, I hammered :P interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/9426/…
proud prance

@Tinkeringbell LOL
@Tinkeringbell did you see what I tried to do in the other chat? I dropped some hints for you....

6:11 PM
Hello world

@Nofel Heya!

6:25 PM
Sigh. When I am helping a friend learn to code, and he keeps wanting to shorten "JavaScript" to "Java." NO! BAD!

@Nofel hello sir.

@IamSoNotListening I noticed ;) I'll take it into account when writing the meta

:)
That person, is irritating to me.
for the record

6:45 PM
@TheTinyMan everyone knows that javascript and java are the same thing. :D

@TheSnarkKnight LMAO

@TheSnarkKnight vein on forehead pops out three inches

@TheTinyMan oh, and do you think you can stop by later, the cup holder on my computer isn't working.

@TheSnarkKnight Oh, try cleaning it out with wine.
Alcohol, you know. ;-)

javascript is just a scripted version of java... amirite

6:50 PM
@enderland OML

and it comes with coffe

@TheTinyMan I've been around long enough to know that the "cup holder" call is NOT just an urban legend

@TheSnarkKnight Oh, I know, haha

@TheTinyMan 😂
