@ChristopherEstep I haven't searched meta yet, so take this with a grain of salt, but I don't think plagiarism is a valid on a wiki commons site
It seems like the issue might be more complicated than that assumption though

My thought was that I saw someone who was commenting so to protect from downvotes. I see it rather often that someone keeps commenting until the OP says they're correct, at which point, the commentor then makes it an answer. I felt I was doing a service by moving it to an answer, and as many questions on here have proved, comments are temporary and mean nothing.

I agree

I was speaking more to the dictionary definition. It's still slimy to not give attribution.

it does seem like there is some precedence to attribute the answer though

Q: Users are calling me a plagiarist. What do I do?

PëkkaOther users have been leaving me angry and hostile comments accusing me of plagiarism and saying that I'm a liar and I should stop stealing answers. But I have only been copying content from other sites, not taking answers from other users. I don't understand what is wrong here. Shouldn't we be...

@ChristopherEstep we'll agree to disagree

7:20 PM
"If you want to reference an existing answer on a Stack Exchange site as part of your own answer, link to the answer and possibly even the author's profile. The attribution goes before the copied content so it's obvious to everyone who it's from. Copied content should be quoted in blockquotes."

My problem isn't the use of the answer. It's pretending that it's his own words.

What makes it not my words?

Downvotes are also discouraged in this instance:

Q: What to do when plagiarism is discovered

PëkkaHow should I act if I discover a user plagiarizing fellow users' posts? What if I find someone plagiarizing external resources without attribution? See also: Users are calling me a plagiarist. What do I do? Return to FAQ index

As far as I can tell, just because you wrote a comment, doesn't make those words yours based on these rules.

I've suggested an edit that I think is in line with those meta posts that gives credit while leaving Jeff's answer

7:26 PM
@DoritoStyle yup I saw, thank you

The meta seems to outline things nicely, you get rep for improving the post and the original poster gets credit for their words
I guess it's good to know that we can work collaboratively but still maintain attribution?

pay
Sorry but is this discussion necessary when this is an issue of the OP acting childishly?

Where is the OP acting childishly?

If there's disagreement, then I say yeah, it's necessary. Do you mean OP of the question or the answer?

pay
I'm referring to you, Jeff, not the original poster of the question.
The question is fine, this discussion is asinine

7:30 PM
The "intent" that was "clear" is that @JeffQuick wanted to follow StackExchange guidelines by moving a comment to a more useful answer.

How was that childish? It wasn't an answer, so I made it an answer

Attribution is all that was really needed. I don't know why it was resisted in the first place. I've removed my downvote.

pay
This is my point though, that response is similar to a kid who keeps asking "why?" but why?" because they realize they're irritating the adult.

@pay well that is your opinion, we'll agree to disgaree

The only thing in question was the method and the details, and the only thing childish is the way you're stating your point @pay

7:30 PM
Your @DoritoStyle was only slightly different than mine.

pay
You don't actually think your action was good, you're just engaging in this discussion because you want to force it
My point is, don't think your intention escapes all of us
It does not.

pay, who are you addressing?

pay
Jeff Quick

@pay that is again, your opinion
and not remotely factual

@pay the issue is resolved and you're only rubbing salt in the wound at this point
Please follow the Be Nice policy, assume good intent

7:32 PM
motivation is irrelevant to me. It needed attribution and it has it now. AFIAC, it's over.

pay
I'm just telling him that although some people will play his silly game here and engage in this discussion, that he's not fooling everyone
To me that is relevant information for him

@pay again that is the opinion you have fabricated

@pay That is a serious accusation, against the Be Nice policy, rude, and not constructive. Please drop it.

Let it goooooooo.......

pay
Let's not get into the game of telling people that criticism is rude

7:33 PM
now you can spend the next hour trying to get that stupid song out of your head.

pay
But yes, I have nothing else to inform him of
Best of luck

Criticism isn't rude, attitude and accusation are

@pay you're rather out of line here

yeah, stop making me agree with @DoritoStyle :)

pay
In my opinion it's rude to copy someone's comment and pass it off as your own, it's almost like we have different opinions or something

7:34 PM
@ChristopherEstep lol, it feels weird

I was not passing it off as my own. I made it an answer.

@pay the point you keep assuming is that it was malice instead of a mistake.

I think it's rude too but that's completely irrelevant. An issue was brought up and it was resolved. So let it go.

@pay Not everyone has the meta memorized, and it was really a simple thing to research and fix, now you've poisened the well needlessly

pay
I don't think having rose coloured glasses on that are that thick gets anyone anywhere though

7:35 PM
@pay one last time, the Be Nice policy is clear: assume good intent.

pay
But I appreciate that you can give people the benefit of the doubt where there is no doubt

@pay stop adding fuel to your fire

If you can't agree to that then you need to deal with it on your own.

you're not helping anyone
that was for @pay

pay
Guys if you don't want a discussion then simply stop replying to me, but replying to tell another person to stop speaking is just silly.

7:37 PM
second time in a day? really?

Discussion implies that you're willing to consider the other side. Are you willing to even consider that this was not malice?
@ArtOfCode sorry, at least it's a different issue I guess?

This room was placed in timeout for 5 minutes; go take 5, everyone, and come back when you've calmed down

SO, how is everyone's Wednesday shaping up? Mine has been surprisingly productive IRL

This room has been way out of hand today. I endorse the actions of my fellow mods from across SE in dealing with it in my absence.
To reiterate: if you cannot abide by the SE "be nice" policy, do not be surprised if you lose the ability to participate here. If somebody is misbehaving, flag and disengage. Throwing oil on the fire, or rounding up matches and kindling to start your very own fire, is Not OK. If the "rudeness" you see is only "that person disagrees with me" do not waste moderators' time with flags.

Respectful disagreement and discourse is fine; what was happening in here is not.

8:12 PM
@DoritoStyle me too. Getting a crap-ton done though my hatred for mixing tables with css has been reborn. :)

Looking at the aftermath I'm quite content to not read any of this 200+ message backlog I think... :)

Wonder what's got to this room today. I like it.

Hey what happened to that Walle account? I noticed their rep is down to 1. I thought they had some really useful posts.

that usually means a suspension

@JeffQuick Does the profile show they have badges?

8:26 PM
But why? They seemed fine on that post earlier.

"This account is temporarily suspended to cool down. The suspension period ends in 7 days."

If they're suspended, they'll appear as 1 rep with no badges below questions, and 1 rep with numerous badges in profile.

Oh ok. Still seems odd though, not sure why they got suspended

might be something got deleted from chat or something, I dunno. I went back to work while the poop storm was going on.

@JeffQuick Well, let's avoid the Streisand effect. No one is ever suspended for no reason.

8:28 PM
Streisand effect?

@ChristopherEstep Poop storm? Nice. Gotta read the above

@JeffQuick reasons. Trust me, it was deserved, but the reasons won't be shared publicly.

understood.

Ok, just seems odd. I thought it was a good question.
But yeah sure thing

Yeah, that's fair - it's just the nature of moderation that a lot of the whys and wherefores can't be shared around

8:31 PM
Even though I've had some back and forth with him, I don't think he's intentionally combative. Let's just say he's....passionate about his opinions. :)
I think he's basically a good guy though.

@JeffQuick I'm assuming it has to do with this question

Q: What is the proper reference for gender on workplace?

WalleBeing that we live in a post-binary-gender society, the oxford dictionary states that it is grammatically correct to use non-gender specific pronouns, such as "they", as stated in the oxford dictionary post https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/usage/he-or-she-versus-they. However, some users get as...

He wasn't suspended when I commented an hour ago so I'm guessing whatever he replied with wasn't very kosher.

@Lilienthal oh ok, I don't spend too much time on meta, I find things get lost in arguments that have no right or wrong answer

Not my experience with meta, but ok.

@JeffQuick get lost?

hmm?
oh

8:41 PM
I mean what do you mean with ''get lost''?

I find the back and forth of never resolved arguments to be hard to get any value out of.

Meta discussions are what meta is for.

Yeah I had to read that twice haha
no I understand that
just all they really are are discussion, so I tend to stay out of it

If you think more talk than work is being done, just appear where there's people trying to get work done.

Ok that's a confusing sentence, but I think I get it...

8:44 PM
If you feel meta is dangerously apathetic, just put up a meta post. If people share your feelings, they'll think of a solution.

Yeah no I'm good, I'll leave that for the people who have the time and ability to argue that.

Oh, never knew meta.Workplace is this entertaining.
I might lurk in the future.
And JimG seems to be the Evan Caroll.
Not by the trolling aspect, I mean. I can't judge that. By getting downvotes on meta aspect.

Yeah the downvotes don't really make sense to me "I think your idea/qualm is stupid, therefore -1, and here's an essay of an answer as to why it's stupid"

@JeffQuick That's exactly what downvoting is for. It doesn't take away rep so people can express themselves more clearly. I don't get your point.
-11
Q: Will the real serial downvoter please stand up?

VectorI guess someone is peeved at me, but doesn't have the courage to reveal themselves. -2 17:36 downvote My boss gave me everyone's pay by mistake and mine is lower, how can I increase it? -2 17:36 downvote Should I tell my co-workers that branch manager uses drugs (crack) at the offi...

Yep, very entertaining

Yeah in general that makes sense, just idk for meta

9:06 PM
Wow, a conflict that I was not part of. I must be getting old.
4

conflict?

@M.A.R. The gender issue has created a rather passionate divide.
@JeffQuick the room being put on a five minute cool down.

@RichardU oh ok.

@RichardU I personally have nothing against singular ''they''. It's certainly not a linguistic abomination and really just something language came up with, no matter the origin, to remedy a lack of genderless pronouns in the age where people have too few things to worry about and hence get upset over someone assuming their gender.

@M.A.R. It is annoying, but if someone else is going to use it, fine. I just don't like it when one feels the need to edit my posts. (see the use of "one" instead of they/them)

9:12 PM
Some things just shouldn't be argued about.

@M.A.R. oh, everything should be argued about. That's how we learn. You should have seen the arguments between Einstein and Niels Bohr

@RichardU Sometimes there's no benefit in learning.

@M.A.R. Only in the extremes, such as in the case of Faust
I would draw the line at losing my soul, but not before
But one can disagree without being disagreeable, and it is the sign of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. My apologies to Aristotle

The unfortunate side effect of me learning what just happened in some state in some country with a lot of wars going on is a feeling of anxiety that further toxicifies this already toxic atmosphere.

@M.A.R. or it could inspire you to do good. Knowledge is a tool, and while like any other tool, it can be misused, it has been far more beneficial than baleful.

9:18 PM
Yep, but that's not what happens to most people.
Most people that grew up anyway
Ones that are running too fast to reach the life's pace that forgot what they dreamed of as a kid.

@M.A.R. If true, that's extremely sad. I've gotten to learn twice in this lifetime. First before my stroke, again after
@M.A.R. the one benefit of great suffering is that after it is over, all else seems at worst an inconvenience.

True.
I gotta sleep. Night

Goodnight!

@M.A.R. sleep well.

Q: Where's my question gone?

Peter David Carter-PoulsenI asked a question about The Six Sigma Illuminati and it's been deleted without trace, and I didn't even get a notification it was being removed.

Your meta is prolly my new favorite, BTW

9:22 PM
Oh, we've got some characters, to be sure
"The unexamined life is not worth living" -Socrates

@enderland New flag request - The OP is a dumbass and needs a rectal extraction of his cranium
Its a flag that mods can ignore but makes the rest of us feel like we tried to do something constructive

Kaz
@DeplorableNumber9035768 Unfortunately, it probably violates the be nice rule.

The best part is no one ever has to actually see the flag. It lets us vent in a way that no one can be offended

Hah, placebo flagging

The flag should always be marked helpful... though not actually taken into the count of helpful flags. Any questions on the flags get the standard response of "We have escalated the issue to SE staff they will be looking into it and taking appropriate action"

9:36 PM
@M.A.R. Peter went crazy on multiple sites like that by the way.

Not only that the flag should preclude you from raising other flags on the question, but should do so silently so you do not realize your flag was not actually raised

Slightly on that note, I'm officially confused about chat flags.
Earlier, I believe a 10k user mentioned a distinction between a spam/offensive flag and a flag for mod, but which is more heavy-duty? I get the impression that both are to be seldom used (of course), but what's the threshold?
Is this worth a meta post? (most of what I see on the topic is geared at mods)

IRRC the difference is that the latter let's you explain the flag.
Not much else IIRC

Kaz
@DoritoStyle Mod flags are always last resort. Or should be.
In the rare case that you think moderator intervention is required, but the chat isn't spam/offensive then you can always go straight to that option.

Ah wait, hang on, spam/offensive are also sent to regular chat users aren't they?

Kaz
9:49 PM
@Lilienthal Everyone with 10k+ network rep
Though I don't know if they go to "every" user. I only seem to get a handful every few days and I'm sure there must be more flags than that.

Yeah, 10K users see those, that's how the dance party early got started

10:23 PM
Seems like we have a Dragonball Z inflation issue there, maybe when chat flags were implemented there weren't many users with a reputation level over 9000.
I think I found what I was looking for, hope this helps:

A: A guide to moderating chat

There might be a variety of other users, including moderators and room owners, in chat with you. Users can be distinguished by the way thei...

There's an answer about "What tools are available to regular chat users?"
Not much concrete advice beyond what could be assumed, but the whole post is a bit enlightening

11:41 PM
Is that for real?
I am relatively new to the community, so I don't know how often people make stuff up for fun

I have hard time telling if anything is real on this stackexchange or just for points or laughs.

It's like legaladvice on reddit sometimes
Some %% trolls, some %% karma farmers, and a few people with legitimate issues that they should actually talk to a lawyer
