@YannisRizos hi

Hello!

@YannisRizos Can I ask you a question(just an advice)?

Sure.

@YannisRizos I am at the starting of my career and currently working as an android developer in a company but a bigger company is offerring me a Quality engineer job (Testing) with a larger package.So I am in a big confusion. What should i do?Is there a scope in testing?

@YannisRizos I was just teasing you. :)

12:09 AM
@IceBox Well, ultimately the decision is completely up to you. Quality Assurance can be quite interesting, and it can include a bit of development (mostly scripting, to automate deployment and testing).

@YannisRizos Thanks

The core question in QA is: Does the product work as it's supposed to? To answer that you'll have to have a very good understanding of the requirements, every little quirk or limit of the product.
Attention to detail is a must, in a sense you'd be the one guaranteeing to the company and to the clients that the product works.

@YannisRizos Yes but I am feeling very odd as I really enjoyed in development.But then I think I can continue developing for my own for fun.

Also, we have a site for QA, you will probably get a lot more information on the various processes and responsibilities of the role there.

Q: How should I deal with colleagues asking me to hide problems with their work?

TheoMy specific situation is that I am working as tester for a web application project, and after some low level security tests I realized the application has lots of vulnerabilities. I would normally report these as part of my job. However, one of the lead Developers is "begging" me not to explore ...

@IceBox This question ^^^ is about a tester having some issues with a developer. That developer is... me ;P

@YannisRizos really

12:17 AM
Yes... There wasn't ever a serious problem, I even encouraged Theo to ask here.
But I think the question shows that QA engineers have a certain degree of responsibility they can't overlook. We developers, in general, are a bit more relaxed.

@YannisRizos ha but then what happened.you went for that vacation or not?

@IceBox Nothing would stop me from taking that (much needed) vacation. ;) The audit went on as planned, another developer fixed the easier issues that we found, I fixed a couple of critical ones while on vacation and the rest when I got back.
I had to carry my laptop with me, but it was a fair compromise, I was the only one who could fix some of the critical issues (without having to read thousands of lines of code).

@YannisRizos Well I now would only have to report the bugs not fix it.This could be interesting.

@IceBox It's a bit more complicated than that, some bugs are not that easy to identify and isolate, there will be times when you'll have to work very closely with the developers. If you decide to go for it, the first thing you should research is automated testing suites for your platform. We do web development and rely heavily on selenium, we have a ton of scripts for it that essentially emulate everything a user would do with our apps, and we run them every time we change something.
In previous companies I've worked for, unit testing was also delegated to QA engineers, although normally it's considered a developer's work.

@YannisRizos Well I am really looking forward to this.
@YannisRizos Do you have any idea what integration testing would be?

12:34 AM
Integration testing is, roughly, when you test the various modules of the project in groups. It's unit testing's big brother.

@YannisRizos Hey thanks for your suggestions.And have a great day ahead.

For example, if your application follows a n-tier architecture, during integration testing you'd test how the various tiers talk to each other.
@IceBox You're welcome. Good luck with the new job, if you decide to take it.

@YannisRizos Thanks

Good evening/morning (depending on your position on the globe), this question is 100% on topic for Project Management SE, but I don't want to migrate it unless it's deemed to be off-topic here.

Q: Introducing daily standup meeting to old workplace

GravitonTo have a better understanding of the project status and a better relationship with the developers who report to me, I want to introduce daily standup meeting ( as per suggested) to the developers in my office, but the problem is that this is never a part of our culture, and I afraid that introd...

@jmort253 I was just going to ask what you thought about it, since you're in the best position to judge.
I don't think it's off topic here.
I do agree it's also 100% on topic on PMSE
The point of the question, however, at this time, seems way more about working with the people than the management of the project itself (not at all to say that PM doesn't mean working with people), so perhaps slightly better suited here than PMSE.
I also haven't had any coffee yet, so take all that with a grain of salt.

3:31 PM
@jcmeloni Yeh, I'm not sure it's off-topic here either, and it's a great question. PMSE would totally take this question, and I even dropped a link in the PMSE chat room.
However, if it's on-topic here, then I'd say migration isn't the best course of action.
I can't really see how it would be off-topic....
Playing devils advocate, if I really wanted to migrate it, I'd push that it's about a job function, a Project Management job function, which would be off-topic. But I can't shake the feeling that would be a huge stretch....

3:46 PM
@jmort253 I'd go with your gut on this. And you know (at least I think you know) that I love PMSE despite not really being over there since being a mod here, and if I honestly and truly thought it was best served by PMSE, I'd say so. :)
Worst case scenario, PMSE folks come over here to help, and the OP learns there's a lot of good info over there as well.

@jcmeloni Yes! Tiago already dropped a link in the comments to PMSE.
And I put a link in the chat.
Honestly though, I think this is just one of those questions that would thrive on either site.

Newly appointed mod @jmort253 is trying to steal good Workplace questions for his other site (How's that for your first Meta call out? ;)

ZING

@enderland He's not officially a mod until he gets called an evil nazi on Meta first...

is there a way to "view new posts" somehow?
to just read through new questions/answers since your last visit?

hmm, that will work I think

5:23 PM
you can't combine is:answer with is:question though, it would be nice if you could get a list of newest posts.

@YannisRizos If I migrated that question, I think it could actually be a valid call-out. ;)

@jmort253 I think you could break protocol a bit and ask the OP to re-ask the question on PM.SE. Although generally cross posting is frowned upon, since the question is 100% on topic on both sites it might be a good experiment to see if it's treated differently on PM.SE.
We did this on ProgSE, with this question, which was at the time the highest voted question on CS.SE (Raphael is a CS mod). Surprisingly different answers, and the experiment helped define the boundaries between the two sites.

6:50 PM
Not a bad idea.... @YannisRizos
Im working ATM, but if someone wants to suggest that in the comments and point out to try to tailor the question to PMSE (not that it's really needed), that would be awesome! :)

@jmort253 I thought all SE work happened while people were working?

Q: If I leave my job in the middle of the pay period, when should my insurance expire?

MichaelMy final paycheck will be sent on 12/31 (I'm paid monthly), but today, 12/14, is my last day (I'm leaving for another company). HR has told me my health insurance ends today, but that they will still make the usual deduction from my final check (it won't be prorated). Is that normal? It seems t...

I don't want to do a swift-moderator-close on this question because it's either too localized or off topic, and I'm walking out the door right now....anyone want to vote appropriately, that would be super.

@YannisRizos Wow, I was not expecting the difference in answers to be that stark.
