@Adam, I added a few excerpts but no full wiki entries yet

We're going public next week today!

@Adam Incidentally, this site was just cleared for public launch for this coming Tuesday, I believe. Congrats! — Robert Cartaino ♦ 19 mins ago

Man that is good news
Only a handful more days left until the flood gates open
I wonder if I can get the day off of work Tuesday...
01:54
Getting off of work for the opening of a website? People these days. :)
Even at work I have three tabs open for this site: one for the main site, one for meta, and one for chat, so I can see when something new happens
I'm like obsessed or something.
Hey, nothing wrong with being active in a community built to help other people.
I'm guilty of it as well.
02:25
@HDE226868 wow, sweet

6 hours later…
08:30
I'm an obsessive as well. A late-to-the-party obsessive. Congratulations, everyone!

hola
15:37
Thats it? All we are going to have is 4 nominations for moderator? That seems low to me.
@Cfinley you can nominate people, too ;)
I thought about self nominating
I know. I will nominate people when I get home from work if there are not any new nominations.
I just want others to think about it, because if this site gets released to the public on Tuesday, we don't have a lot of time to choose our moderators.
Some sites end up with no moderators for a while too
I guess I should ask when do the moderators get appointed? I thought that it was when the site goes public
I think it's around then, but doesn't have to be then
I can't figure out for Workplace when the beta moderators were appointed
15:47
Here is the link for SR.SE moderator announcement meta.softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/608/…
@Cfinley To be fair, we don't get to choose our moderators. They are appointed by SE. SE does take user input, but votes aren't a guarantee of who will be selected. True elections don't come until graduation.
I was aware of that. I didn't type that, but I was aware.
Well, carry on then. :)
SE uses only the people who are nominated right?
Like they wont pick me if I wasn't nominated.
They won't pick anyone who isn't willing, so yeah.

hey guys!
who here has experience with KVMs? :-)
Your question might be solved with two cheaper KVMs. I can't look into it right now, but I can sometime today.
Jez
Jez
two? hmm.
trouble is signals going through 2 KVMs seems dodgy :-)
it's bad enough with 1 KVM
@Cfinley They'd ask you first.

@Undo, there is the list of users active on HR and SR that have any rep value on both that isn't 1 or 101
sorted by rep here
@Jez Nothing would be going through two KVMs. One monitor would be on its own KVM. I still have to work it out though before I recommend anything.
And that is only if I cant find a single KVM that meets your needs

1 hour later…
17:44
@Andy Neat, that's quite a bit of overlap
@Andy REPRESENT!
wait I have 185 rep on SR?
2
Surprise!
I was figuring I'd be one of the only folks without rep tehre
but alas
18:16
@Undo, I don't have a specific recommendation, but for your question about closet servers, I've gotten 3 rack mount servers via ebay for $20-40 each. The hardware was about a year old each time, but have performed wonderfully. I just stalk ebay when I'm in the mood for a new one. I wipe the drives - though all have been empty anyway - and install whatever OS I'm in the mood to play with
@Andy hm, I'd never even considered a rackmount
One year? Wow
ebay.com/itm/181882102580 <-- If that's at <$100 when it ends, I'll be dumbfounded. And probably buy it.
So you're saying you got servers like that?
That looks exactly like one of mine.
Oh...more ram though
I suppose the professionals with the big pockets aren't looking on EBay for their next server
Heh. Probably not.
I am not one of those people. I'll take a hand me down for $25 with those specs
What does running those do to your power bill?
And what kind of cooling do they need?
18:28
I have several machines at home, usually always on. I've had these 3 for a while and don't remember a big shock on the bill when I started each one (I didn't get them all at once).
Mine are all cooled by the fans. It's a bit noisy, but they sit in a utility room with a door.
in the basement
That may be important too
Ah
Me no has a basement
Dig a hole :)
And I wouldn't want to put one in the dusty dirty crawlspace
Understandable.
@Undo I have a basement
>.>
18:32
A machine like that would probably be a dream desktop machine if one could throttle the fans down a little bit
Although even my MacBook Pro gets a little noisy with fans at 6k RPM, a server has to be worse
Man this is so tempting
I would probably already have one ordered if I wasn't allergic to spending money
You sound like me.
I do love my toys, but I dislike buying them
Oh, these probably don't have WiFi. So it would have to be in the no-airflow-closet, or the dusty-dirty-crawlspace
allergic to spending money? Reporting for duty!
My house a data center is not.
@Andy It's even worse for me since the only expense I have is half an Internet bill, which is like $20 now.
And I still can't make myself buy new toys.
I have been slowly building a desktop and was planning on turning it into a server. I should checked to see what was on sale first.
18:40
I wonder if I could justify poking a hole in the central air conditioning duct that runs through that closet wall.
I'm guessing no.
@enderland I'll spend three hours building a tool instead of buying it for thirty bucks. Which makes no sense
I should buy one of these cheap ones and carry it to Code Camp this year. I'd be king
Have it sticking out of a backpack.
It would be worth it to buy some of these just for the hard drives and RAM in them
I already has enough hard drives...
too many in fact
well, damn, I will be traveling when the site goes public beta (London, then Brighton)
I just need systems to put them into
18:45
@Undo why? what do you make per hour? that's like $14/hour pretax or more
@enderland consulting for a consultant, I get half of what he makes an hour
It's comfortably more.
yeah - I spend hours building my own computers, and the money I save from doing that is completely wiped out if you factor in my hourly rate
and that's salaried, I used to charge a premium for one-offs
I build my own computer because I love doing it
exactly
I took 6 months off work post-layoff once, know the first thing I did? built a gaming rig
If I ever hit the lottery, I am building fancy computers for all my family, friends, and even strangers
18:49
and then played Warcraft, LoL and others on it for most of the remaining time :)
you play World of Warships by chance?
I've seen people talking about it in here
(work for a games company)
but not played myself
@enderland World of Tanks is fun

2 hours later…
20:56
@Undo I'm not really a gamer, but have really enjoyed world of warships
21:23
I've played World of Tanks for over a year now. Never gets old.

A: Who should our moderators be?

CfinleyEnderland Enderland has been a SE member for about 4 years, so he knows how the site works. Enderland is also a mod over at The Workplace. He is currently in the top 5 of the users with the most rep on this site. I believe Enderland would make a great addition to the mod team here.

@enderland
21:58
Finally another candidate :)
@enderland Looks like you've been nominated :)
22:13
This (smart) recommendation can be boiled down to "I should do my research."
Serves me right, I think.
Or... steal borrow some high quality military tech :)

A: Who should our moderators be?

CfinleyGilles Gilles moderates a few other sites in public beta, so he knows what beta sites need in order to grow. One of those sites is Software Recommendations, which just got the green light to graduate. Currently he sits inside the top ten of users with the most rep on this site.

@Gilles
22:29
Ah, the ol' candidate double-down.
Fun Fact: Gilles is active in so many places on Stack Exchange that he is the Stack Exchange network.
Or at least a manifestation of it.
@Andy Man, if I could get my hands on some of that stuff. . .
@HDE226868 Gilles is actually Robert's non-work account.

@Adam So this and this are just him arguing with himself? :-) Man, meta just go waaaay more interesting.
Exactly. He wants to blend in.

hi
Hey Jez
Jez
Jez
sooooo
@Jez Hi.
Jez
Jez
anyone know much about KVMs?
I've used a 4-input KVM that went to one monitor, but that's about it.
Jez
Jez
22:54
ive actually used one or two in the past
but always very simple ones that switched all input
i really need a much more sophisticated setup
23:08
I'm thinking you'd need two switches for that setup. One for mouse/key input, one for screen output.
Jez
Jez
even then though
im wanting one mode where it's dual screen, and one where each screen displays a different device
We're going to open beta sometime around Tuesday so hopefully the new people that join can help you with it.
Jez
Jez
hmm
i just signed up for the site and i hadn't committed
23:34
aww just not going to rep cap on workplace today
Why's that?
