@Emrakul I'm an Aggie but I honestly wouldn't recommend Davis that highly.
user61230
Aggie?
Air
Air
UC Davis students and alumni are Aggies.
user61230
And pourquoi?
user61230
Ahhhh, sense

It was a pretty mixed experience for me, but the major thing as a transfer student was that the honors program open to transfers is not worth much for a STEM major.
user61230
02:05
Hmm, that makes sense.

That said, I've heard good things about the Physics department in terms of being fairly small and tight-knit.
And there is the Crocker Nuclear Lab, which is a thing that I never went into, but exists on campus. And is nuclear.
user61230
Yeah, my cousin went to Davis and is now working at CERN. I should talk with him a bit.
user61230
Heh, maybe I can leverage nuclear fusion research :P
@Air Here in Texas you would get slapped for saying that :P

@Doorknob Hey, I have nothing against A&M. We can all be Aggies together.
It's actually kind of funny, the vet's office that I take the cats to has all the veterinarians' diplomas up on the wall in the waiting room, and they are 5 UCD Aggies and 1 A&M Aggie.
@Emrakul I did take one course with a Physics professor at UC Davis that I quite enjoyed.

Do you mind if I ask where you transferred from and what your major is?

I went to music school in Boston for a few years, then was out of school for a few more, before going back. I did 2 at a CCC before transferring to Davis.
My degree is civil engineering.
I don't think there's anything hugely wrong with Davis, by the way. You would have opportunities to do undergraduate research, and that's pretty significant.
user61230
Hrm. Hrmhrmhrm.
user61230
How is the administration at Davis?
Air
Air
See... That's kind of my problem. You've heard about the pepper spray incident, I assume?
user61230
I actually haven't?

The UC Davis pepper-spray incident occurred on November 18, 2011, during an Occupy movement demonstration at the University of California, Davis. After asking the protesters to leave, University police pepper sprayed a group of demonstrators as they were seated on a paved path in the campus quad. The video of UC Davis police officer Lt. John Pike pepper spraying demonstrators spread around the world as a viral video and the photograph became an Internet meme. In October 2013, a judge ruled that Lt. John Pike, the pepper sprayer, would be paid $38,000 in worker's compensation benefits, to compensate...
And the related pepper spray cop meme.
user61230
oh
user61230
that
user61230
I had, uh, forgotten about that one.

Chancellor Katehi somehow survived that scandal by firing the chief of police, who was actually pretty well-liked.
I don't like Katehi. I don't like the way she's commercializing the school, though she's not alone in that trend. The financial aid office, if you have to deal with them, is shit. I tried not to deal with the administration if I could help it. Fortunately, the civil engineering major adviser is exceptional (and a neighbor of mine in Sacramento, as it happens).
user61230
Hm. Okay, that's important to know.

But you know, it might be pretty typical of the UC system. Or other campuses might be worse. I've only attended the one and toured a few others.
user61230
Hmhmhm. I'll ask around and see, then. Still useful either way.
user61230
(So, gonna go report this conversation to the admissions offices? ;P)
user61230
Thank you so much, by the way

Until bathtime

[grins] How old?

Two and a bit. If you end up at Davis, I'll introduce you. Haven't been able to interest him in math or physics yet, though.

I was giving him a bath and putting him to sleep anyway. Ah, sweet freedom. And french fries.

@Emrakul Davis city park during the farmer's market (right now)
18:30
Wait, why do I only get one build? I have six supply centers and four units currently.
Shouldn't I have two builds?
user61230
Huh, busy day, or nominal?
user61230
(sorta busy, sorry)
Ah, I see, I don't actually own Sevastopol because I moved out of it too early >_<

They are watching a big group of kids do gymnastics. It's apparently national gymnastic day or something. The actual market is a bit more crowded. Pretty typical in good weather.
We usually stick to Sacramento where the markets are bigger but decided to give my son a fun train ride today. And no worries, I know you're moving. Just thought I'd take a picture while I'm here.
