user61230
Hi!

user61230
Who's the last person... Jeremy Banks?

Yep.

user61230
8:40 PM
@JeremyBanks

user61230
Oh, and also @Seth wanted to watch.

Should we make this a private room, or does it not matter?

user61230
Ehhhh, I doubt it.

Alright. Just have to remember that this isn't TL then. :P

user61230
But yeah, time to stab each other!

No red border around the chat box is a good hint.

Hi!
Yes, I wanted to watch. Maybe play some day too :)

We could periodically post screenshots. :P

user61230
Awesome!

user61230

@Emrakul I've never found that particularly helpful xD

user61230
8:46 PM
Yeah, that's fair xD

@Emrakul Oh that's fancy. I wonder if we could set up a bot to do that

user61230
General note: PlayDiplomacy will not check your orders for validity. If your finalized orders are invalid, the illegal ones will be deleted. Check your orders before submission.

@Doorknob Classic programmer you ;P

I think I sorta understand how the game works. Now how do I... go? If I click something, will anything immediately go wrong?

user61230
@Doorknob That's a good idea. It's under the Order History window, so it could just be a few requests and an authkey.

8:48 PM
Ooh, has the game started?

user61230
Nah, it's really hard to break things. If you click on a unit, an order menu will pop up.

user61230
@michaelpri Yep!

<joke> Well Switzerland looks sufficiently charred. That's the price of neutrality I guess. </joke>

user61230
To enter and submit orders: Click on a unit, and an order menu will pop up. Click on the type of order you want to give that unit. If applicable, click on a target country. If you're convoying, you'll need to click on the source, then the destination. Once you're done submitting orders, click "finalize orders" under the "Orders" menu. (Your orders will be processed if you don't do this, but it'll take longer for the game to progress.)

Alright, I told my fleet and my armies to move places. Do I have to do anything else before hitting finalize?

user61230
8:50 PM
You might want to talk with people ;)

How do I do that? Is there a built-in chat?

user61230
Click on Messages at the top.

am I doing it right
:P

user61230
glorious

Aaaak a long
A ping
I can't type
Busy right now, will get to this at some point

user61230
8:56 PM
No rush. We have a few days.

user61230
room topic changed to SE Diplomacy: please don't kill me (game record: drive.google.com/…) [diplomatic-relations] [poking] [stabbing]

@Emrakul fancy

user61230
Oh, heh, I forgot that PlayDiplomacy gives you twice as much time on the first turn as on subsequent turns.

user61230
So... we've actually got six days for this turn, not three.

9:12 PM
I'm definitely gonna lose very quickly

user61230
austria is fuuuuuun

I do feel like I'm in a good spot for some reason.

user61230
Austria almost always has a fun game.

The only thing that I'm worried about is that I'm surrounded

user61230
Hi, @Air!

@Air did... something happen?

hahaha

Air
@Emrakul That's a very good idea.
PSA: Diplomacy has that name for a reason. Before you finalize your Spring 1901 orders, it's a good idea to talk with at least your neighbors.
And remember that two units that independently try to move to the same place will "bounce" with neither one going anywhere, no matter who controls those units... So you can "bounce" yourself, accidentally or strategically!

@Air How could you do that strategically?

Air
9:40 PM
@Doorknob Looking at the starting map, just as an example, say Austria orders both armies into Galicia.

Ah, I see. That's neat.

Air
They'll bounce each other, so it's guaranteed that neither army moves that turn; but, if Russia orders A(Warsaw)-Galicia, the Russian army is also bounced.
The original game rules are available as a PDF, though a disclaimer, I don't honestly know if they are 100% exactly identical to those on the playdiplomacy website.
I expect so, and if there's any difference, it's probably in an edge case
But refer to the website when in doubt

user61230
That's how it works on PlayDiplomacy

Air
9:55 PM
ALERT. ALERT. MODERATOR ABUSE. ALERT.

user61230
Where? Where!?

user61230
AAAAH NOOOO

user61230
I've already had my one "Mods are Awful" meta post for today!

user61230
...maybe playing Diplomacy using a chatroom we can all edit wasn't such a great idea..... :P

Air
9:57 PM
^^^ I really shouldn't listen to that at work if I want to keep from laughing out loud in my cubicle.

@Emrakul shhhh :P

Air
@Emrakul Eh, it's like Public Press Plus™

user61230
Public Press - Now with More Abuse!

Air
This room fills the "idle chatter" niche of the game - playdiplomacy messages, the "serious business" part
Nobody should take anything that goes on in this room seriously with respect to the actual strategies, tactics, alliances and so on in this particular game.

user61230
I'm really excited to have people to discuss strategy with out of game, too, though.

user61230
10:02 PM
But yeah, that.

Air
Wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more

user61230
grumbles unintelligibly

10:29 PM
Exciting!

11:08 PM
Next we should organize a game of 0 A.D., although that could prove more challenging because there is no "correspondence" mode :P

Air
@Seth Wikipedia says RTS? Yeah, that would require me to have time to devote to something
Civ2 has PBEM :) (though even that would take too much of my time)

I've never played any of the civ* editions, but that's an interesting idea.
@Air yeah, it's real time.
That's why I've never played with anyone online myself ;P

I haven't had a chance to log in yet. Is the country that each person has a secret, or known?

@JeremyBanks It's known. I'm pretty sure you have Russia

user61230
It's public. You're Russia!
