Is there a way to turn an ubuntu install into an arch install ?
by installing pacman
and uninstalling a bunch of things ?
The first rule of computing is that anything is possible.
The second rule of computing is that most things are unwise.
Less facetiously, yes, it is possible to turn a Ubuntu installation into an Arch installation, but it’s far harder than reinstalling.
thanks :)

You could just declare online that it is impossible and people will jump out of the woodwork to explain in detail how you're wrong. In doing so you will get the steps needed to do it
19:09
@jesse_b He could. It's also a waste of time to try to do it. And the result is quite likely to be dysfunctional and defective in some way. Why do something the complicated way when the simpler way will work, and the results will mostly like be better?
mostly like -> most likely. Ugh.
@FaheemMitha for the lulz
@Asinomás yeah, there are a bunch of ways. I could list them all here, but as others pointed out, it won't be a walk in the park, unless you like breaking and repairing stuff over a decent amount of time.
@jesse_b Life is too short.
you can play around with LFS in a VM. If you play around, you'll notice you can easily set up pacman on any distro (even though it's called linux from scratch, you can use the guide in other ways, like say, installing certain packages in other distros). At the end of the day, most distros if not all are determined in their uniqueness by their installed packages.
I can imagine doing it as paid work, if I was working for an idiot.

(when I say installed packages, I do take into account the kernel)

.
@Kusalananda Interesting idea: private moderator puppet
i'm at a loss - is there something that could cause ssh -L to fail silently while simple interactive sessions would still work? ran `ssh -o ExitOnForwardFailure=true -fNTL $port:localhost:$port $host -vvv` and while it returns successfully (exit code 0 and everything), i also mysteriously am seeing `debug3: mux_client_read_packet: read header failed: Broken pipe` followed by `debug2: Received exit status from master 0` in the output

also would such a question be better suited for here or for server fault?
20:54
@Claudia Sounds like a reasonable question for here. Though I don't know where you would find better expertise. Also, doesn't SF has restrictions on who can post? You have to be a "professional" admin, or pretend to be one?
oh this would technically be in a professional capacity (the server's primarily intended to be used for business purposes) so it'd be on-topic for there
@Claudia OK. We could always ask for it to be moved from one to the other.
ok fair

tfw typo
port numbers are far too easy to typo ngl
@Claudia Do you mean you found the bug and that it was a mistyped port number?
22:15
@jesse_b Yeah, port numbers. Terrible things. And ngl too! ... I think.
Who is that guy btw?
I just mowed my lawn about 4 days ago and I just had to mow it again
@Kusalananda That is Jocko Willink
@jesse_b Get a robo lawnmower (seems like everyone around here has one, my sister has two of them), or a few goats?
@jesse_b Seems to be a man who likes discipline.
... and really dark shirts.
and not smiling
discipline equals freedom
@jesse_b And also money, if you put it in books.
