9:48 AM
I want a winter hat

1 hour later…
10:52 AM
Ho yeah finally got one

6 hours later…
4:32 PM
@FaheemMitha Well, it's text as an image. Presumably it's something about discriminating against the visually impaired, because why else would you do that?

5:03 PM
Hi @derobert. That wasn't really my question, but thank you. And how are you doing?

@FaheemMitha Ok.
Also makes it so that you can't easily plop it into Google Translate to have any clue about it. But really, text as an image? Must still be 2000 on Twitter.
(or maybe 1950, if you go check the orange one's account)

@derobert I think that's what they call Web Uncooperative 2.0.
And 2000 what?

Wat it do guys

Hi @PrabhjotSingh. Off to the hospital right now. Back in a bit. How are you doing?

5:14 PM
@PrabhjotSingh I see. Thank you.

@FaheemMitha Hello, I am fine, still tired.

@PrabhjotSingh Ok. Get some rest. Talk to you in a bit, hopefully.
Off now.

@FaheemMitha 2000 CE

1 hour later…
6:39 PM
@derobert You mean 2000 AD?
@PrabhjotSingh Back now.
@derobert Assuming that Twitter doesn't make text into an image (which I hope it doesn't), then it's presumably an Indian thing.

@FaheemMitha If you want to be religious about it, yeah.

@derobert Is CE less religious than AD?
Oh, Common Era. Yes, I suppose that's less religious.
But AD was still pretty standard, last I checked. Religious or not.

@FaheemMitha I don't think they do. Really it's probably to get around the character limit — of course a link would work too, but that'd display differently.

@derobert Yes, I forgot about that silly character limit.

2000 CE is call option of some stock ?

6:44 PM
As I recall "Anno Domini" was used as an expression meaning old age (in a medical sense) in the novel "Goodbye, Mr. Chips". But that may be non-standard usage, or was accepted usage at the time.
@PrabhjotSingh No.

@FaheemMitha What is 2000 CE then ?

> But when Chips had a cold or when east winds roared over the fenlands, Merivale would sometimes take Mrs. Wickett aside in the lobby and whisper: "Look after him, you know. His chest... it puts a strain on his heart. Nothing really wrong with him— only anno domini, but that's the most fatal complaint of all, in the end."
Verbatim quote, courtesy of Gutenberg AU. The net can be quite helpful at times.
@PrabhjotSingh 2000 Common Era. Better known as 2000 Anno Domini. Or 2000 AD for short.
The year, in other words.
Might be a reasonable question for English SE, actually. If I could be bothered.
And Mr. Chips isn't really a novel. More like a novella, really.
And full of that weird British nostalgia.
Mentioned in collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english-thesaurus/old-age so I guess not that non-standard.

7:05 PM
@PrabhjotSingh Do you think moneylife.in/article/… is significant?

@FaheemMitha you are asking about link or content ?

@PrabhjotSingh Content. How can a link be significant?

hah

@FaheemMitha Yes, This can bring about change.

@PrabhjotSingh I see.

7:10 PM
Wat it do @Jesse_b.

Hi @Jesse_b

Hello folks

@FaheemMitha you should learn marathi. 2019 is the year of indigenous languages.

@PrabhjotSingh That sounds like a lot of work.

7:13 PM
Plus it's not the most pleasant sounding language.

@FaheemMitha And Punjabi ?

@PrabhjotSingh What about Punjabi?

Is the swastika big in Indian culture?

Jesse_b how are you ?

@PrabhjotSingh Pretty good. My wife had our child last week :)

7:15 PM
@Jesse_b It's an old religious symbol. Why?
@Jesse_b Wow. Congratulations!

@FaheemMitha There is a question on the travel stack exchange site that made me laugh/curious

Congratulations to my brother @Jesse_b

@Jesse_b Link?

45
Q: Do I have to hide anything related to the swastika while travelling to the USA?

Ankit SharmaSwastika is religious symbol in India and many countries don't find it offensive but due to Nazi connections, will a traveler will get in trouble if he carries anything with the swastika symbol in the USA? Like a T-shirt, Tattoo or religious book with that logo? Do I need to hide it, or avoid eve...

@PrabhjotSingh Thanks
It's kind of sad but made me chuckle a bit thinking about some innocent person wearing a swastika shirt for religious reasons and then likely being assaulted by ignorant people in the US

@Jesse_b I see. That's a reasonable question. And I think the answers are mostly accurate.
It's unfortunate that the swastika was co-opted for political usage. But I don't know the history.

7:21 PM
Yeah I just wonder if it's a common thing someone would have on a shirt or if this person might be purposely trying to stir up trouble
The US is a pretty christian country but I can't remember the last time I saw a crucifix on a shirt

@Jesse_b I don't think it's common to have it on clothing. Maybe in a religious book, or on a prayer mat or something. Or religious decorations. Like as part of a picture, or part of a shrine.
Indians put up religious pictures on the wall or mantlepiece. Sometimes taxi drivers have them on dashboards.
One sees swastikas in that context. But I don't know what precise significance/meaning it has, if any.

I think it's almost worthy of a sitcom or at least a comedy sketch

@Jesse_b What is?

Some unaware Indian man with a swastika tattoo and paraphernalia comes to the US and is treated poorly by most, then some white supremacists start being nice to him and take him under their wing

@Jesse_b An unlikely story. But sure, one could make a sketch of it. But ti would be more Bollywood than Hollywood.
The US tends to steer clear of religious stuff in their entertainment.

7:30 PM
Yeah but they love race stuff

@Jesse_b Hmm. It's not exactly race stuff, though.
At least not the black vs white stuff that's central in the US.

I think lately we have been more focused on islamaphobia

@Jesse_b There is more of that around recently, sure.
But neither of those is exactly India-centric.

Indian ~ Islam in the eyes of an islamaphobe :p

Americans aren't particularly racist towards Indians. They lack the common history.
@Jesse_b Not unless you're uncommonly clueless.

7:34 PM
which racists normally are
Trust me, the turban is seen as a symbol of terrorism in most "backwoods" areas

@Jesse_b Some of them. I don't know that many personally.
@Jesse_b I believe you.

I grew up around a lot of racism
I normally just call her mom

I mean, lots of Muslims live in India. But India isn't exactly a hotbed of Islamic extremism.
@Jesse_b Yes, I remember you talking about your scary family earlier. :-)

The people in the hospital were surprised that we had no family to come visit us during/after the delivery
they asked me if I was a fugitive lol

7:59 PM
A bit gray over here today: instagram.com/p/BrTB_lBFASQ
Snow has come and gone a few times over the last couple of weeks, but it's not staying yet.

8:09 PM
@Jesse_b What delivery? Oh, you mean your baby?

@FaheemMitha Yeah
@Kusalananda Who is catmellis? Your girlfriend? :p
Kusalananda and Catmellis sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g...

@Jesse_b I hope your child is doing well. Daughter or son?

@FaheemMitha Son, he is pretty good

@Jesse_b Ah. Not too much work, I hope.

@FaheemMitha Well he takes after me so he farts and poops a lot

8:24 PM
Oh.

:-P

@Jesse_b One of the signs a relationship has matured: you can fart in each other's direction and laugh with it...
0:-)

@Fabby All of my relationships have been mature on day 1 then

@Jesse_b They all responded in kind???
Congrats then!
Show some of you ex-GFs my way!
:D ;-) :D

You don't want them, I have farted on them :p

8:33 PM
@Jesse_b :D

I don't think @FaheemMitha cares very much for fart humor :p

@Jesse_b That would be an accurate statement.

@FaheemMitha bah humbug

I was thinking about turbans. They're mostly a Sikh thing. And they seem to be getting quite rare over here, at least. Can't remember the last time I saw one. Of course, there probably aren't tons of Sikhs in Bombay.

@Jesse_b :-) No, she's a woman I knew while I lived in the UK. Artist. Does prints. Quite good.

8:42 PM
@PrabhjotSingh You're in the Punjab. Do you see a lot of turbans locally?

@FaheemMitha My old boss was Indian and he said that most Indians wear turbans during official events (such as his wedding) but that most don't wear them casually anymore
my old boss is Indian*

@Jesse_b Only Sikhs, as far as I know. Though I could be wrong. I'm very ignorant about India. Which is full of complicated customs I know nothing about.

@Kusalananda :) Yeah I looked at her linked instagram account and saw some artsy stuff. I don't know how to art

From a quick search on the net, other Indians do wear turbans. But it seems quite uncommon in everyday life, at least.
Though I've never heard of this.

8:45 PM
Yeah we had a guy in our office that wore one at all times, a Sikh I guess, and the other Indian people in the office would talk down about him

@Jesse_b Really, why? And how? "Talk down about him", I mean.

I think it has to do with the caste thing? They mostly just said things about the area he was from I think
but most of them would go out for lunch together once a week and I would normally get invited but the Sikh never did

@Jesse_b I see. Actually, my impression is that Sikhs are relatively privileged by Indian standards. Though I don't know much about them.
@Jesse_b Are you sure he was a Sikh?

I am not lol, but he did wear a turban at all times
From what I understand though all of the other Indian people I worked with were from very wealthy families and this guy was from a poor area
Which made me like him more

@Jesse_b I see. Well, both racism and classism are alive and well in India.
So it could be either of both of those.

8:51 PM
Meh, I think humans are just very tribal in general
if there was no race we would find other ways to segregate

@Jesse_b Sure. Indians don't even particularly stand out in general. In my experience, the British take the cake for sheer nastiness.
Of course, that may just reflect the fact that I know more about them than other peoples.

I think it's australians for me, but I don't really know that many british people

@Jesse_b Australians? Really?
Hmm, I always thought of them as relatively tolerant.

yeah when I visited there I saw a lot of overt racism, especially towards aboriginies.
That being said I did visit a fairly rural area of Australia
I remember going into a convenience store and the clerk was seriously following around an aboriginal man yelling at him to "hurry up and get out you damn abbo"

@Jesse_b Oh, the natives. Sure, that makes sense. At least Australia still has them.

8:57 PM
Yeah, parts of canada are still fairly hostile towards natives as well
The US probably would be if we still had them

Though I imagine they are in bad shape. That seems to be typical of all the Western settler societies.
@Jesse_b The US still has them, technically. They're just not at all part of society. To the point where they are invisible.
But yes, in the US and Canada they are also in very bad shape. Sky high suicide rates, poor education, poverty, high rates of drugs/alcoholism.

I've been watching a lot of alaska state troopers shows lately and the native tribes up there seem super depressing

But I was thinking of more mainstream levels of intolerance. The British have had an exceptionally class-ridden society for centuries. And lots of racism with it.
Much of that is still around, though not as visible as previously.
It doesn't help that they still hang on to their ghastly traditions. Like that dreadful Royal family. They seem to be convinced that their extraordinarily ugly past is something to be celebrated and cherished.
@Jesse_b How so?

@FaheemMitha Poor living conditions, extreme cold, towns are virtually no accessible for 8 months of the year
although I suppose it's still better (debatably) than it was before modern technology

@Jesse_b Sounds about what one would expect. I also believe that the land where the natives live tend to be quite bad. Otherwise I suppose it would have been taken away from them.
And I seem to recall they also tend to use the land where natives live for things like nuclear testing, though it's possible I'm mistaken about that.
Here I'm talking about the US, obviously.

9:05 PM
@FaheemMitha I really hope we don't do nuclear testing anymore
As far as I know we have only detonated a few in the desert in new mexico and some at sea

@Jesse_b I thought it was an ongoing thing. You have the weapons, you gotta test them. Otherwise, how would you know whether they work?

but I believe we are blaming the holes in the ozone layer on them and have stopped detonating nuclear warheads
We officially stopped testing them in 1992 but could still being doing it secretly
although it does say we tested over 1000 warheads =/

@Jesse_b Oh. I didn't know that. But isn't testing necessary?
I mean, still lots of nuclear weapons.

I don't think it's that necessary
we basically know what they do

@Jesse_b Oh, ok. I don't know.

9:10 PM
@FaheemMitha Me either, the idiots that tested 1000 of them probably disagree with me anyway
but I feel like it's very irresponsible to test them at all now given what we know about their impact on the environment

As far as I know, the US has tons of those dreadful things.
It's surprisingly we're all still here, really.

Russia has a lot as well

@Jesse_b Yes, I suppose they do. Cheery thought.

10:14 PM
@Kusalananda: Why wouldn't you want to go to an awk workshop

@Jesse_b Well, practical and logistical reasons (can't get away from the gf I care for), but also dreading what the tutors would actually teach. I've seen too much really bad course material about "how to use Unix".

@Kusalananda I suppose. I'm under the belief that I can always learn something though. Although you are far more advanced than me :p
I once I took an intro to red hat linux class after having used it for years and I still learned a few things
I did take an A+ class once though after having like 15 years experience in the field and I felt really bad about having to correct the instructor too much

You're right. I will still ask for the handouts and slides from the course though.

You're close to your gold badge in awk

Am I? Hold on...
A fifth of the way to go. It will be months.

10:24 PM
closer than I am to the bash badge :p

@Kusalananda 4 secret hats already???
I like the one you're wearing now!

Didn't count them, but yes, maybe.
@Fabby :-) It's not really a hat, so I had to turn it upside down to make it fit on top of my head.

@Kusalananda It's the Holy Grail!
:D
